Chapter 2 Unlucky Car(2)

On the other side, it took Grandpa Hayes a long time to remember who Hudson was and he asked him why he called.

He told Grandpa Hayes about the haunted car in detail and invited him to come over.

Grandpa Hayes said that he had business to attend to and couldn't come. "But this kind of thing is simple. The ghost refused to leave after she died. Most of the time, it could be because she was unwilling to let go of something. After you help her to solve the problem, she would leave. At night, you can ask her what was it that she had not fulfilled."

"How do I ask?"

"Didn't you see her through the window? Ask her through the window, or find a mirror."

"Are you kidding, I can just ask her so directly? She's... she's a ghost." The boss cried.

Grandpa Hayes scolded him, "Why are you afraid? It's not like you haven't seen her before. If she really wanted to hurt you, you would have died by now."

He then hung up the phone.

The boss clutched his phone, looked at me and said, "What should we do?"

"Didn't he make it clear on the phone? Go and ask her tonight why she's still hanging around."

The boss gritted his teeth and said, "Okay, but you have to come with me."

The boss was quite timid. At 11 p.m., he sat in the driver's seat, and held the steering wheel in a death grip. His knuckles were white, and he looked very nervous.

Of course, I wasn't any better than him. I sat in the passenger seat, my palms sweating profusely. We stared at the rearview mirror and waited for about an hour. When it was almost 12 o'clock and the female ghost still had not appeared, the boss was the first to give up. He said, "Why don't we think of another way? This... is too torturous."

I told him that it was too late and I couldn't finish my sentence. A woman's image slowly appeared in the mirror. Her appearance was much clearer than what I had seen last night. She was dressed in white, with long hair and there was blood on her face and clothes. She sat straight in the middle of the back seat and looked ahead. From the rearview mirror, it seemed as if she was staring at us.

The boss was stunned. He forgot all the lines he had prepared and stammered, "Please, your death has nothing to do with me."

I fared a little better than him and remembered what we were there for. I looked away from the mirror, calmed down, and said, "There's a difference between man and ghost. When a person dies, they have to go where they should go. But you still linger on in our world. Is it because you have some unsettled business to take care of?"

"Help me."

The female ghost spoke, and her voice sounded a little weak. How should I put it? Anyway, it just felt so surreal. It was similar to what was shown on TV. It seemed that not all TV drama plots were made up.

"How do you want us to help you? We'll try our best to do it." I said.

The ghost said, "I want you to help me find out if my death was an accident or if someone had plotted against me."

"So you're saying that you have a suspect?" I asked.

"I suspect the guy whose surname is Bacote." she said.

The female ghost told us that her name was Quincy Haby and Bacote was her husband, Weston Bacote.

Quincy's father ran a hardware factory that had been operating for more than 30 years. The family business was very successful and they were very prosperous. Quincy was their only daughter. The whole family had the idea to find a suitable match for her, so he could help her to take care of the family business.

Quincy said that Weston was originally her father's driver. He was tall, handsome, smart, and was a smooth operator. But he came from a poor family in the countryside and had three brothers. Quincy's father thought that Weston was quite suitable to be his son-in-law. After three years of scrutiny, he introduced him to Quincy.

At first, Quincy didn't like him. Later, she gave in to Weston's sincere kindness and they got married. A year later, Quincy was pregnant.

On the death anniversary of Quincy's grandmother during the springtime, the whole family made plans to go to the countryside to offer sacrifices to her grandmother. Originally, Weston would be accompanying them, but later he said that he had something urgent to deal with and couldn't go. So Quincy's father drove them there. On that day, the car spiraled out of control and rolled down a deep ditch.

At that time, Quincy was six months pregnant. She was sitting in the back seat and her seat belt had not been fastened. She died on the spot.

After she became a ghost, the more Quincy thought about it, the more she felt that the accident was not so simple. How could the new car suddenly go out of control? Weston had always prioritized her family's affairs. Why was he not in the car that day? She suspected that the car accident might have been planned by Weston.

"He was a car mechanic before. Later, the boss quit and recommended him to be my dad's driver. It shouldn't be difficult for him to tamper with the car." Quincy's voice was faint.

"You're overthinking. You're pregnant with his child. Even tigers don't eat their cubs. He won't hurt his own child, right?"

As I spoke, I stole a glance behind me. The backseat was empty, and there was nothing there. I looked in the rearview mirror and saw that the ghost was still there. I understood now. The mirror was the medium between us and the ghost. We could only see her in this way.

The female ghost in the mirror wore a loose skirt and her protruding belly was obvious. She was really pregnant. It was such a pity that she and her baby died.

The female ghost shook her head and said, "I'm not sure if he did it, but I had an intuition. Help me check it out. If you don't help me, I'll keep pestering you."

I said, "I also want to help you, but how can I start the investigation? It's been so long. Why don't you pester Weston and ask him in person?"

"If I could go and ask him, I would have done it a long time ago. For some reason, I couldn't leave this car. Whenever I am three or five meters away from it, there would be an inexplicable force that pulls me back. Now, you're the only one who could help me."

I didn't answer. It had been almost half a year since her death, and the car had been repaired and sold to me. I would not be able to find any evidence in the car. Except for this car, where else could I start to investigate? I couldn't directly ask Weston if he had killed his wife and child, right?

"Boohoo..."

Seeing that I didn't speak, Quincy sobbed and said, "I died so miserably... It's a pity that the child in my belly couldn't see the world. My baby, Mom is sorry..."

"Wah...Wah...Wah..."

While she was crying and muttering, a baby's cry suddenly rang out in the car. The sound was extremely clear.

The sudden cry startled us. Where did the sound come from?

The next second, I remembered Quincy's belly. Looking in the rearview mirror, I saw that something was moving in her belly, which was covered by a loose dress. It felt as if the child in her belly was trying to claw its way out.

"Boohoo... My poor child... It's my fault that I failed to protect you."

Quincy cried even harder. The child's cries echoed together with hers at first, but later it turned into a shrill scream that made our hair stand on end!

"Don't cry, okay? It's... scary," I said bravely.

Quincy acted as if she hadn't heard me. I saw wisps of black smoke emerging from her stomach. At this time, a gust of cold wind blew through the tightly closed window, and the temperature dropped. This coupled with the shrill cries of the two ghosts was totally eerie and we both freaked out.

I panicked and broke out in a cold sweat. It seemed that the devil himself was about to show up. "What should I do? Should I just make my escape now?" I thought.

As soon as this though came into my mind, the boss tugged frantically at the handle of the door. Obviously, he had the same idea, but the door somehow couldn't be opened!

"Don't go. Help me... help me..."

Quincy, who had been sitting still in the back seat suddenly stood up when she saw that we wanted to get out of the car. She stretched out her hands toward the boss and me.

The boss and I were terrified. We shouted and tried to swat her hands away. We found that we were only hitting the air and could not touch her at all.

Her hand quickly grabbed my neck. It was cold and her grip was so strong that I couldn't breathe. Everything went black and I almost passed out!

Fortunately, the feeling quickly disappeared. About ten seconds later, I felt the grip around my neck suddenly loosen. When I looked in the rearview mirror, I found that she was gone. The back seat was empty and there was nothing in it. A suffocating silence hung over the entire car.

"She's gone," I said after a while. My voice was so shrill that I sounded like those eunuchs on TV.

"She's finally gone." The boss collapsed in the car seat. "I was so scared that I peed." He was not joking. It was true. The car reeked of urine.

In the early hours of the morning, two men clutched and supported each other as they stumbled about in the street. Their legs wobbled as they walked.

"Do you believe me now? You really messed up this time!" I said, as I laid on the boss's bed and stared at the ceiling, a lingering fear sweeping over me.

"How about I send it to another car shop tomorrow and sell it to someone else?" The boss's voice was still trembling and it was evident he hadn't calmed down yet.

"You heartless bastard, let's do as you say." I admitted defeat and made up my mind to get rid of the car. If I kept it any longer, I might lose my life.

Unexpectedly, there was a quick change to our plans. Early the next morning, Grandpa Hayes called the boss and asked, "How was it? Did you manage to solve the matter?"

"The problem is not over, but my life was nearly over." The boss put him on speaker. "Didn't you say that there would be no danger? Why did she suddenly change? She even produced a little ghost..."

"Little ghost?"

Grandpa Hayes's voice became serious. "Where did the little ghost come from?"

"From inside her belly."

"Hiss..." The person on the other end of the phone took a deep breath. "It was a pregnant woman who died? Why didn't you tell me earlier?"

"How would I know..."

"Well, tell me in detail what happened last night." Grandpa Hayes interrupted the boss and asked.

The boss told him everything about the incident last night.

When he heard this, he cried out in alarm.

The boss told him not to worry. "It's all right now. We're going to sell the car to someone else. Anyway, the ghost is trapped in the car and can't get out."

When Grandpa Hayes heard that we were going to sell the car, he became even more anxious. "You can't sell this car. The lady ghost must be at the end of her tether already. If she gets provoked, someone would die."

"But she can't stay here. I'm also afraid of death." I shouted at the side. After the shocking experience last night, how could I even care about others? It was better to sacrifice others than myself.

Grandpa Hayes understood what I meant. He said, "Don't think that you can get off so easily after you sell the car. Do you know what kind of ghost it is? A ghost with two lives is not terrible. What is terrifying is the child in her belly. The child died before he could see the light of day. The resentment in his heart is very strong. If the mother takes it on the road of Yin and Yang, it will be fine. But if the mother is still reluctant to leave the world, the resentment in her heart will nourish the little ghost in her belly. After a long time, the little ghost will come out of the female ghost's belly. The little ghost is extremely cruel. At that time, can a car trap them? When they come out, can you hide? I am afraid that you'd be the first ones they will look for..."

When I heard this, my heart sank. "If that's the case, what should I do?"

"Didn't she ask you to help her? If you help her, and she gets what she wants, she would no longer be resentful and the baby in her belly would no longer be nourished by this resentment, then it can't come out. You can go tonight and tell her that you are willing to help her."

The boss said, "It's not that we don't want to help her. We're afraid that we won't be able to do it if we agree to help her. Is there no other way?"

"Yes, there's a simple way. While she doesn't dare to come out during the day, burn the car and end it."

I said, "Grandpa Hayes, have you considered the feelings of the owner of the car when you said this?"

"Then you really have no other choice. I'll hang up first. I have a visitor."

He hung up hurriedly.

I wanted to cry but had no tears. I looked at the boss.

After a moment of silence, the boss seemed to have made up his mind. He said, "Forget it. Let's promise her first and then think of a way."

At 11:50 p.m. that night, the boss and I braced ourselves to sit in the car again. We became wiser from the previous night's experience and left the car doors slightly ajar. We agreed that as soon as we felt that something was amiss, we would run away immediately.
