Chapter 6 Ten Million For Breaking The Contract

Valerie had never felt so humiliated in her life before.

Looking at the frozen woman at the door, the doctor thought she was scared. "What are you standing there for? It's a simple procedure," she said coldly. "Take off your trousers and lie down. I need to take a sample."

Valerie swallowed and held the sides of her trousers, trying to stay calm.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Maybe if she thought of it as a free physical examination, it would help her swallow the pill more easily.

This was the only thought that pushed Valerie to the bed. Feeling numb, she lay on the bed and let the woman do her business. Valerie knew what Edwin was looking for.

The examination was over not long after.

She was so furious.

"You can leave now. I'll give the result to Mr. Torres."

Valerie didn't bother to offer an answer. She smoothened her clothes, and with all the grace she could muster, she tried to walk out normally.

She stopped in the corridor and found a seat to recollect herself first.

Edwin wanted to check if she had contracted any venereal disease since he thought she had slept with Brent.

She kept breathing slowly, a good method to free herself of her temper. Just when she could feel herself getting better, Edwin called her.

Valerie closed her eyes for a second before she pressed the answer button. "Mr. Layfield."

"Are you done in the hospital?" he asked coldly.

Valerie stared at her blank look on the opposite wall and said coldly, "I no longer work for you. You shouldn't have bothered giving me a free physical examination."

Edwin ignored her and said, "You'd better check your mail."

Valerie frowned. That didn't sound good.

"Be here at eight o'clock!"

he said and hung up before she could say a word.

Valerie went directly to her mail after that.

The Human Resource department had sent her a screenshot of a contract term as a response to her resignation letter.

Apparently she had signed a contract of five years and if she terminated the contract before then, she would have to pay a fine of ten million dollars for breaking the contract.

Valerie's hand trembled so much that she almost dropped her phone.

Granted, she was still very new to this when she joined the company, but she was very certain that there was no such term in the contract she had signed.

However, she had some doubts too. Over the years, she had signed countless contracts.

It was possible that Edwin slipped this term in one of the contracts she signed without reading.

Valerie leaned back into the chair and closed her eyes. Three more months for it to make five years.

With a heavy sigh, Valerie stood up on her wobbly legs and made up her mind.

She had to hold on and make it through these last three months. She didn't have ten million to give to Edwin. She would be ruined if she gave out that amount of money.

Ever since she got to the hospital, she had been trying to get rid of her humiliation. But now, she felt even worse.

She went straight home and scrubbed herself cleaning, hoping to wash the feeling of shame away.

She stayed home and played with her phone. It was only after the sky was dark that she got ready and took a taxi to Edwin's house.

Standing in front of his house, she put her fingerprint as usual to open the door, but her fingerprint was rejected.

Valerie rolled her eyes. Then she wrapped herself up and sat on the steps.

She thought of leaving or going to wait in the coffee shop across the street, but she didn't want to anger Edwin any more. It was much better to sit in the cold.

Time went by and it got darker. It was at nine o'clock that Edwin's car finally pulled up, its strong beam of light hitting her in the face and waking her up.

When Edwin got out of the car, he saw Valerie bundled up on the steps.

This scene made him think of how she was a few years ago.

With raised eyebrows, he walked over and stood in front of her. "How long have you been waiting?"

"I've been here since seven forty," she answered calmly with no sign of anger.

Edwin rolled his eyes at her boring tone. He walked past her and into the house.

Valerie stood up and walked in after him.

In the house, Edwin took off his coat and threw it carelessly on the sofa.

He unbuttoned his shirt as he walked upstairs.

He had spent the whole day in meetings and was exhausted. He needed a good shower.

Valerie walked behind him until she got to the door.

As if he didn't know she was there, Edwin took off his clothes and walked into the bathroom in his birthday suit.
