Chapter 4 4

Jack asked curiously: "Who could it be?"

They were not used to receiving guests, so his interest was piqued, and as soon as he opened the door, he found a man dressed in an elegant suit.

" Excuse me, does Miss Liana Legrand live here?"

" Yes, she does, but who are you? What do you want with my sister?" Jack asked, and the man smiled.

" Excuse me, I am Tony, Mr. Edward White's personal assistant, and the president has asked me to deliver something to her, is she home by any chance?" The moment Tony revealed that he worked for the White Family, Jack's expression faded. However, his good manners still compelled him to say.

"My sister isn't feeling very well at the moment, but please come in," he said, making room.

" Thank you."

The horrible acoustic protection of the walls of their apartment and the tight overall space of the apartment meant that Liana could hear their conversation, even if she was inside her room.

Their apartment had only two bedrooms and a living room, although the living room was barely large enough to fit the few pieces of furniture they had.

Jack led Tony into Liana's room, where a sickly Liana was slumped against the headboard of her bed, and Tony's measured expression slipped for a moment to reveal his shock. He couldn't believe that the frail-looking woman in the room was the same woman he had served as his boss's wife and the mother of their child, and his temporary shock was quickly covered by his good training, and he respectfully presented Liana with a check.

"Miss Legrand, how nice to see you again! - he said in greeting. - President White asked me to bring this to you, and said that it always belonged to you, and asked you to accept it wholeheartedly." Tony held out his hand toward Liana, and before she even laid eyes on his hand, she knew that it was a check for at least two million dollars, after all, Edward must have found out that she had rejected the check for help so that she could start her life over, and since she had rejected it three years ago, she would reject it now.

"Thank you Tony for coming all this way, but tell your boss that I'm grateful for this, but I can't accept it, and tell him he doesn't owe me anything, so don't worry." Liana replied with a certain nonchalance, which surprised Tony with her reaction.

" Aren't you even going to see how much the check is for?" he asked, and she gave him a weak smile.

" It's two million dollars, right?" She asked.

"Yes!" Tony's shock only deepened, after all, she already knew the amount of money that was on that check, and clearly her situation was necessary, yet she rejected it without even thinking twice?

Liana noticed the confusion in Tony's mind, so she added.

" Don't look so surprised, I didn't accept this same money three years ago, and the thought of getting it back hasn't even crossed my mind, so I'm not going to accept it now. Just go back and tell Edward that the only thing he owes me is that my son should have a good life by his side." She said, comforting herself with just that.

" But..." Tony tried to argue, but to no avail, Liana didn't want to hear any more.

" Jack, dear, would you please escort Mr. Tony out? I'm a little tired right now." She said, leaving no room for Tony, Edward's secretary, to say anything else.

" Mr. Tony, as you heard my sister say, we won't accept the money, so tell your boss!" Jack spoke up pushing Tony out of the room, and also out of the house, and before Tony could leave the house, he tried one last time to persuade Jack to accept the check on behalf of his sister, but his offer was firmly rejected.

Looking at the closed wooden door, Tony couldn't help but be intrigued by this family, it was obvious that they needed money, so why wouldn't they just accept it? It was two million dollars, is it possible that their integrity cannot be bought or did they think that the amount offered was too little? Tony simply could not think of an exact answer, so he rushed back to the company and reported everything to Edward.

As soon as Tony reported the matter to his boss, Edward was not surprised by Liana's answer, and just added.

" Is that all she said?"

" Yes, sir!" Tony answered promptly. " Mrs. Legrand said that she wouldn't accept anything and her only request is that the President take good care of your son."

" But of course I'll take care of Dylan, he's my son, and I'll do it without her asking me. - He spoke angrily. " Since she didn't accept the check, just leave him here, and then I'll see what I can do. - He spoke up finally.

" Yes, sir," Tony nodded. "If there is nothing else, I should say goodbye now." As Tony prepared to leave, Edward called out to him again.

" Wait!" Edward spoke hurriedly.

" Yes sir, do you need something?" Tony came back to Edward again, and noticed that his boss was more tense than usual.

" How is Liana's physical condition?" Edward asked, after all, she had suffered an accident and escaped from the hospital, she was not doing so well.

" Honestly, sir, Mrs. Legrand appeared to be physically weak, but mentally sound. She was very controlled and her eyes remained steady during our conversations. She should be fine," Edward was inwardly relieved.

"Thank you, you may go now." After Tony left, Edward looked at the returned check. He was pricked with guilt and felt that he had to do something for Liana. Maybe he should clear his schedule and talk to her personally, even though she said she didn't want his money, to him, this money belonged to her for everything that had happened, it was like compensation, and he didn't want to owe her anything either. Edward reflected on this at length before pulling himself together to concentrate on his work.
