She snapped out of the ongoing war in her head. Half her mind wanted to get off and ran away but the other half listened to the voice of reason. One that reminded her that if this patient succumbed because of her ignorance she would be answerable. Without looking at any of the people who were around her, she went back to resuscitating him, applying the right amount of pressure as the medics pushed the wheeled stretcher towards the emergency room. Luckily after a few minutes, she recovered his pulse. It was weak but at least steady and that was when she sighed and got off, leaving the others to transfer him onto the hospital bed.
She looked at the male doctor who was still eyeing her suspiciously.
"Take over, I'm going to finish my rounds," she said and left the room.
The moment she stepped out of the room, she looked at her hands, half covered in blood. She wanted to scream but didn't know how to. She wanted to kick everything out of her way but then knew she would only hurt herself even more. All her strength left her and she found herself sliding door the wall in defeat. Nicholas Chambers, the guy who had made her believe in love and maybe, just maybe a happily ever after only for all that to be shattered into a million tiny uncollectible pieces then all of a sudden reappear in her life.
Not wanting to go back into that dark whole that she had spent more than five years escaping, she shut off all the memories that were rushing back to her at the moment, recollected herself but instead of going back to finish her rounds, she headed straight to the technical department. She never thought she would ever want to feel needy ever again but this was inevitable.
Gabby was busy typing something into her computer, completely engrossed that she didn't even notice her walk in until she grabbed her hand.
"Andy, what are you doing here and what are you doing?"
"Storeroom, now!" she stated and pulled her from her seat not even stopping to listen to her complaints. She literally shoved her inside the tiny room and closed the door, leaning against it.
"Seriously Andy, I've got to finish that program and run it or else the hospital data is- And what's going on with you? Did you finally get the herpes?"
"It's not the fucking herpes Gabby, seriously not everything is about my disastrous sex life!" She broke down even without wanting to. "I actually wish it was the herpes at this point."
"Oh no! What happened, talk to me," Gabby's voice changed into that of concern and moved closer to her. She saw her hesitating to touch her which was only because she never allowed anyone to unless she initiated it herself. At least that made her feel like she was in control but right now,all she wanted was to lose it and be vulnerable in front of the only friend she had kept close and who wouldn't hesitate to take care of her if she needed it. "Andy?"
"The guy I was with last night turns out to be my most likely boss and might get me fired," she began. Gabby was about to say something but she beat her to it. "It's not even that,I can work around it." She hesitated.
"You can talk to me Andy, what is it?"
"My ex fiance,"she lifted her hands in front of her. Gabby gasped and almost stepped back in shock. "I just saved his life while all I have ever wished for is for him to die in hell," she stated.
"Your what now? You were engaged, you Andrea Serrano was engaged? Who, when, how?" Her questions spiralled on and on almost making her regret coming to her with this in the first place. "I'm sorry, I'm just surprised because you don't seem like- oh God, I'm sorry! So, what happened?"
"He left me,two days to our wedding and disappeared into the face of the earth. Now he is back just like that, out of the blue. What am I supposed to do?" she asked breathing hard and trying as hard as she could to fight back tears. "I mean it's not like I didn't know that he still existed and I have seen him all these years but from afar. Seeing him here is different you know? It's bringing back all these memories I don't wanna have and I feel like I'm going crazy."
"Hey, take a deep breath and look at me!" she commanded and nodded when she did exactly that," You are going to get past this, okay?"
"How? One look at him and I was just about to turn into a fucking riptide. I don't want to see him ever again."
"And you don't have to. A few days here and he will leave. You don't have to see him, okay?" How bad she wanted those words to be true. Who knew whatever was about to happen next? "How bad is he?"
"I don't know, several fractured bones maybe. All I know is that I wish I had been the one to fracture them. He ruined me!" Right then, her communication radio sounded in her pocket and while she reached for it, she added,"And I don't care if he is some rich ass celebrity. The only thing that stopped me from walking away from that stretcher was only because people were looking at me, waiting upon me to be his savior. Every actor like him deserves that and even more!"
"Wait,who is your ex fiance?"
She sighed then replied absently,"Nicholas Chambers."
Gabby's eyes went wide in shock,"Holy freaking molly! The Nicholas Chambers? Prince Aidan of the Midnight Lovers?"
"That's who you were talking about this morning?"
"Yes!" She shouted.
"But that accident was in two towns away. Why did they bring him here?" she furrowed her brows. "Don't they have better hospitals over there?"
Gabby shrugged,"Fate maybe?"
She contorted her face in anger, not even sure what she was angry at.
"Bull shitting fate! To hell with that." She pressed the button on the radio kept clicking every time she ignored it. "What now Doctor Parker?" She listened then almost threw the radio away in frustration. "I just helped resuscitate him,he is your patient so deal with it!" She clicked the button and dropped the radio back into her pocket sighing heavily.
"You are going to get yourself fired Andy," Gabby stated and she knew that she was right. She wasn't supposed to let her emotions get in the way of her work yet here she was. "Go on Andy, you are gonna be fine."
"I want to die."
