Chapter 4 Three

“I beg your pardon?” I was completely stunned by what he just said.

“I am serious. I will give you the money you need for your daughter’s treatment and more, but in return you become my wife. For a year though.” He repeated the crazy statement he made earlier with the same facial expression.

I just stood there, mouth agape with incredulity, completely stunned by this completely insane stranger.

Was I standing in front of a lunatic? I stared at him from head to toe, he looked and spoke quite well to me, but then he almost knocked me down, so he could really be insane.

“Are you okay?” I heard it was rude to ask people if they were insane out rightly, so this was the only way I could phrase the question.

“I’m in my perfect senses if that’s what you’re asking. I could even give you a doctor’s report if you’d like.”

Why does he look a little bit amused? Okay, we have established the fact that he’s indeed mentally stable, so what nonsense is he going on about? I wanted to walk away from the madness and head back into the hospital but I was very much intrigued by this man.

“How can you want to marry me? You do not know anything about me, not even my name, and I obviously don’t know yours.”

“Oh well that’s not a big deal is it? We could always fix that. I’m Nathan.” He introduced himself with his arm outstretched like he actually expected me to accept the handshake. I went back to my kidnapper theory

He dug into his pocket and fished something out “Here’s my business card, call me when you’ve made your decision.” He placed the card in my hand which I didn’t even realize was already outstretched and then got into his car and zoomed off.

After meeting with Mr. Crazy, I headed back to the hospital where my daughter has been confined for the past two months.

“Oh, are you done praying? That was fast”. Ava asked, surprised to see me back so soon.

“I actually didn’t even make it to the church. It’s a long story.”

Her eyebrows arched. “What happened?”

“Let’s just I met with a lunatic.” I explained briefly, sitting down next to Mia’s bed, fatigue finally catching up with me.

“Okay….? Are you really going to make me beg for the details? You know I’m going to want to know everything” She prompted, already sitting at the edge of her seat in curiosity.

I smiled, of course she’d want to know everything, she’s Ava after-all, she lived for gossip. That’s one of the reasons why she’s my favorite cousin. She always knew the juicy ‘tea’ about every aunt, cousin and neighbor.

“Just as you left me, lost in thoughts, I unknowingly walked into the road and almost got run down by a car.” I started explaining

She gasped, her hands covering her mouth. “Oh my gosh, are you alright? I shouldn’t have left you by yourself.”

“I’m totally fine, don’t blame yourself dear. Anyways, long story short, the driver got out and yelled at me.

“He yelled at you? How dare he! Was he blind? Didn’t he see you on the road?” She said getting angry.

“I was literally in the middle of the road Ava.”I pointed out gently.

“And so? He should be more careful next time.” She still defended me stoically.

I laughed lightly as my heart swelled with love for her. Even if the police caught me standing over a dead man’s body with the weapon of murder in my hands, Ava would still vouch for me and defend me with the whole of her heart. That’s how loyal she is and another reason why I love her.

“Anyways, can I continue my story without any more interruptions? I asked giving her ‘the eye’.

“Sure.” She said, making a motion of zipping her mouth and throwing away the key.”

“So, he yelled at me and I got emotional. I didn’t realize when I started rambling on, about how Mia is sick with kidney failure and I need money for her surgery.” I covered my face in shame and frustration.

“Oh no, poor you.” She stretched out her hand and took mine, squeezing it in hers.

“And then he offered to give me the money.” I finished peeping at Ava through my fingers still covering my face.

“He offered to give you what money.” her eyes were bulging out as she asked

“The money for Mia’s treatment.” I could already see the excitement and elation in her eyes, too bad it isn’t going to last. “But there’s a condition.”

“Of course there’s a condition.” She said sarcastically, excitement vanishing immediately. “So what’s the condition?”

“That I marry him.”

“What!?” Her jaw dropped almost to the ground. If I wasn’t so upset, I would have found her expression comical.
