Chapter 3 The hills

Wendy met Leo in his office, working tirelessly on his system. His brow was furrow in absolute concentration. "hey" he muttered not bothering to take his eyes off the laptop for a second.

The office was well tidy and neat. The room was cold as a result of the air-conditioner. Wendy developed Goosebumps from the cold. "could you please turn off the A.C ? I think I am gonna freeze to death"

Noting the pain in her voice, Leo gaze shift from the laptop to her before transferring his gaze to the air conditioner remote next to his system "that's absurd"

Wendy released a breath she didn't know she has been holding when Leo finally turned off the A.C.

The office was painted in white, Leo sat on the swivel chair, his attention finally on her. His desk was well tidied except for his laptop which was in his front.

"is there a problem Wendy?"

Nobody knew Wendy relationship with Leo. They all believed Leo to be Wendy's boss. Wendy stared at him, suddenly noticing how handsome and sexy he is. "you are too sexy and handsome" she blurted before realizing.

Leo chuckled but the laughter went out of his eyes when he noticed the bruises on her elbow. Wendy noticed the change in him and instantly wish she didn't lift up her hands to cover her mouth thereby revealing the bruise.

"who did that to you?" he snarled

"ehmm.... You see......"

"who is the mother fucker that did this to you?"

Startled by his voice, she quivered in trepidation. "a lady roughly pushed me, so I sustain the injury but it's okay. It does not really hurt"

"what is her name?"

"Rachel"

Leo mentally saved the name in his cranium. "are you sure you're okay?" he asked pinning her with his intense gaze

"yes" she answered meekly

"why are you here? You know it's not really save to be seen mostly around me"

"yeah. I just came to ask a question" Wendy began suddenly fascinated with her perfect manicure.

"go ahead" Leo braced up, anticipating the question on her mind

"you were among the doctor who treated Mr. Daniel, the new guy who was involved in a ghastly accident?"

"yes. I am the doctor in charge of it"

"from the story I heard, his car had a brake failure which meant, someone tempered with his brake to kill him but he survived"

"yeah" Leo added as he stood to brew some coffee. "do you care for some coffee?"

"uhm.... yeah I do"

He added some sugar to her cup of coffee before handing it over to her. "thank you" she muttered

"I want to make a request Leo"

"go ahead Wendy" he took a sip then kept it on the desk

"I was wondering if you could assign me the task of being Daniel's private nurse"

Seeing the horrific look on his face, she added hastily "no, I don't mean it that way from my own perspective, I believe the same person who was involved in my parent accident is the one operating and responsible for Mr Daniel's accident. I want to investigate the car accident maybe I will come up with an evidence against him"

Leo listened attentively with his eyes half dose.

It sounded like a nice idea but he was scared for her own safety.

What if this Mr Daniel is not a nice guy? What if he hurts Wendy? He might be a patient but some patient loves being aggressive on their nurse especially when they feel like an invalid. What if he was a lunatic?

Enough of what if! His subconscious mind scolded him.

What if this and what if that. He would never know until she takes a step.

It's a nice idea. He has to let her take a step from her comfort zone, if he is still scared he can withdraw her if danger comes knocking at her door. Simple!

Sounds rational.

Wendy watched different emotion flick over his face. Unperturbed, she waited patiently for his thought on the issue she just breached.

"sounds good but be careful. If anything seems out of place. Just let me know. Understood?"

"yes, does that mean I've been assigned the task?"

"yeah, I will inform his family"

The excitement on her face was priceless "thank you so much. Indeed, you are the best" she jumped on him, giving him a peck

Finally, she is progressing somewhere. she thought smiling widely

The morning sun shimmered dimly into the room from the window which was half opened. Daniel groan out in pain as he tossed to and fro, suddenly becoming restless. Memories of the event that took place before the accident came rushing into his head at once.

He recalled entering his car, turning on the ignition and driving off. The desire to use his care brake only to discover it's not working. His heart lurched, his eyes widen when an articulated lorry crossed his part. He tried using the emergency brake but it was not working. To avoid being hit, he swerved blindly to his left only to see a double decker coming directly at him.

Cursing, he caught a glimpse of the lorry coming towards his direction. Lost on what to do, he steer the wheel forward. Unable to put the brake, he drove hoping not to be crossed by a car but the unfortunate happened when a car swerve to his direction, hitting his car. Panic clutched his heart and his brain stopping him from thinking.

His heart jumped out of his throat when a single deck crossed his car. "fuck!" he threw his hands off the steering wheel. Closed his eyes and listened as his car somersaulted while everything went blank in his world.

Suddenly the Electrocardiogram monitor stopped beeping.

Doctor Leo and other doctor rushed in instantly.

"No we cant loose him" doctor Bernard yelled as they tried frantically to resuscitate him as they connected the defibrillator to Daniel's Heart.

"1....2....3...start" Doctor Bernard said as he applied the electric shock.

"1...2...3 pull, 1...2...3 pull".

"Doctor Robin touched Leo's shoulder. He is gone. We tried our best"

"Noo!!" Leo cried as he shakes his head in disbelief. "This can't be happening. We can't lose a patient"

"God knows best" doctor Bernard assured

Instantly, the electrocardiogram starts beeping. Doctor robin glanced at Leo. "There's hope, let's bring him back. He is between the living and the land of the dead"

After twenty minute, Leo was able to revive Mr. Daniel

"You did a great job "doctor Bernard complimented with a smile

Martin and Cisca rushed into the ward to see Daniel being surrounded by doctors. Doctor Leo was beside the electrocardiogram, reading his chart.

Panicked, martin took a deep breath before finding his voice. "What is going on?"

"Mr. Daniel awoke, but his mind drifted to the incident which took place before his accident resulting in him having a cardiac arrest"

"Cardiac arrest?"

"Yes, we lost him once but he is stable now though we sedated him after two hours, the drug will wear off. Please keep a close watch on him" Leo advised

The rest of the doctors walked out leaving Doctor Leo behind

"Doctor please I want to request for a private nurse for him. Seeing that we were not competent enough to watch him.

Leo smiled inwardly. Perfect opportunity! He was wondering how he will bring up the topic but the heaved provided an opportunity without him asking for it.

"Okay ma'am. I know someone that is diligent and will be competent enough for the task. I will assigned her to you"

"I am much obliged to you for helping" Cisca smiled

"Thank you man" martin added as they exchanged an handshake.

Some minute later, Wendy walked into the ward, feeling agitated

"Good day ma'am, good day sir" she greeted politely with a smile

"Good day my daughter. How are you?"

"I am fine ma" Wendy responded timidly. Her heart palpitated as she became aware of being accessed by Mr. Martin.

Nodding with approval "you're a decent young lady. I love it"

"Thank you sir"

"What's your name?"

"Wendy"

"You're a nurse here?"

"Yes sir" martin glanced at Cisca with a smile, secretly sending private message to each other with their eyes

Deciding not to bother them, Wendy went to Daniel's bed, felt his temperature. Check his pulse, read his chart before giving them solitude.

"I have finally found a daughter in law" Cisca spoke excitedly minute after Wendy left them. Martin smiled in delight before conceding. "Yes, indeed a good daughter in law"

"She will give me four grand children" Cisca spoke dreamily with a far away expression on her face.

"no, not four but five"

"We have to match make them"

"Yeah. I have the perfect idea on what to do and how to do it" martin winked dearly delighted to have found the lady that matches his taste. They might be rich but they do not want a rich lady for their son. All they ever wanted was a random girl for Daniel.

Being the founder of the multibillion companies in Philadelphia has exposed them to the lifestyle of the influential, rich, spoilt brat. Detesting the lifestyle, martin vowed never to let his son marry from such class.

"What do you intend doing? Spill the secret please"

"Come closer". Martin whispered into cisca's ear.

"That's a lovely plan"

"I know" in a melodious tone "soon, I am going to be a grandpa"

"And I will be a grandma" Cisca joined rolling her eyes before chortling in delight.
