Chapter 3 The Mysterious Necklace

Not long after Layla sat down, her ankle swelled up. She sat on the bed for a long time, but Clark didn't come out of the bathroom. She wanted to massage her feet, so she shook her legs to remove the shoes.

However, her shoes flew away. Right at that moment, the door of the bathroom opened, and her shoes landed in front of Clark.

Layla jerked in shock. Their eyes locked as they stared at each other.

He glanced at the shoes in front of him and back at the woman sitting on the bed.

Her pristine white wedding dress was wrinkled, and her hair was a tangled mess. However, despite her clumsy appearance, her eyes dazzled like sunshine.

The moment his gaze landed on her slender neck, he frowned. "Where is the necklace?"

Layla, who was wondering how to get her shoes back without making a fool of herself, jerked again by his question. "What necklace?"

Clark's face darkened. He couldn't tell if she was acting dumb or not. "The wedding gift your father promised to give me. It's my mother's belonging. She left it for me."

Layla thought for a while but didn't remember Jim telling anything about the necklace.

Clark's face turned red with rage. It worried her that he might strangle her on impulse. If the heartless Reed family found that she had offended Clark, they would stop paying her grandmother's medical expenses.

Thinking about it, Layla clicked her tongue as if she had remembered something. "Oh, you mean that necklace? I forgot to bring it. I'll go home soon and get it for you."

Clark nodded as his face softened.

Although Layla looked calm, she was panicking inside. How was she going to find the necklace? She didn't even know what it looked like. She cast a sidelong glance at Clark and saw a unique ring on his finger. Although it looked simple, the gem was covered with mysterious words on a rose gold band.

Her eyes widened as she remembered seeing a similar pattern somewhere.

It suddenly occurred to Layla that she had seen Sandra, who was regarded as Jim and Alina's daughter for the past 20 years, wearing a similar type of necklace.

An inexplicable feeling arose in Clark's heart when he saw the different expressions on her face. "Go and take a shower," he urged, looking away.

"What?" Layla was stunned.

Clark turned and looked into her eyes. "You're dirty. Hurry up and take a shower."

It wasn't until she looked down at herself that she realized her dress was covered in dirt after she fell down. But she forgot about it and sat on the ornately decorated bed. Layla quickly got up and limped toward the bathroom. Before walking inside, she didn't forget to pick up the shoes blocking his way and put them aside.

A smile tugged at the corners of Clark's lips.

Sitting in the bathtub, Layla clutched her chest and felt her heart pounding against her fingers. She was scared to death.

This man didn't seem like somebody one could mess with. She feared he might throw her into the ocean to feed the sharks if she offended him. The mere thought that she was going to spend her wedding night with an intimidating man petrified her.

With those fears haunting her, Layla sat in the bathtub for a long time. Finally, she got out and dried herself with a towel. That was when she remembered that she hadn't brought her pajamas.

It was all Clark's fault. She was so nervous and had forgotten to take it.

Cursing Clark in her heart, she pressed her ear against the door to see if she could hear anything in the room.

Would Clark be waiting for her in the room?

Considering it was silent outside, Layla wrapped herself in a bath towel and opened the door.

"Ah!"

She clutched the towel with one hand and glared at Clark, who was sitting in the room. "Why are you still here?"

"This is our room. Where else will I be?" Clark looked equally shocked. Embarrassed to look at her, he turned his head. "Why don't you wear your pajamas?"

"I forgot to take it."

Layla scurried forward to look for her pajamas. Jim had bought several expensive clothes for her to impress Clark, but they were all uncomfortable to wear, so she took out her old pajamas.

A frown lined Clark's forehead. He couldn't understand why the daughter of the Reed family was wearing such shabby pajamas.

"The servant has arranged a new nightgown for you. It's over there." He pointed at the door.

Layla put the pajamas away, limped to the door, grabbing the wall for support, and picked up the lacy silk nightgown. Suddenly, something fell down from it.

She picked it up and found it was an ointment.

"Is this for me?"

Layla looked at Clark in disbelief. Her eyes sparkled like diamonds, causing him to look away again.

"What are you waiting for?" he asked, clearing his throat. "Are you expecting me to apply the ointment for you?"

With that, he swiveled his wheelchair and left.

It took Layla a long time to realize that the ointment was for her ankle. She was so surprised by the gesture that she almost threw it out.

Was Clark caring for her?
