Chapter 4 Four

MIRA

The room was drop pin silent. The only sound that could be heard were the bustle and hustle of the city down below and the voice speaking over the intercom in the hospital at intervals.

No one made a move to stop the psycho. I was not sure if they were terrified or scared that whatever they would say would push James out the window.

I felt Emily's fingers dig into my skin. Just like me, she had not watched anyone attempt suicide right before her eyes. Someone was throwing up by the corner but I did not care to see who it was.

My focus was trained on James Carter. The determination in his eyes burned like a wild torch.

"James..." his therapist called nicely. "Please get down. We can talk this out." The young doctor tried to persuade him.

James looked down at that moment. The people in the room held their breath, closely watching the maniac at the window. The street down below hustled and bustled without acknowledging the idiot about to take a risky step.

Something in me snapped and I stomped my way to him. I could not just stand there anymore. If no one would do anything, I will.

"Get down here, James Carter, this minute," I used a commanding tone.

He grinned at me, mischief dancing in his blue eyes. "Of course my babysitter is here too."

"Look..." I tried a softer tone. "... whatever it is, we can work it out."

The amusement vanished from his face. "You cannot work shit out. This was the same thing I was told some years ago. And the year after that. And the next." He ticked off his fingers.

"I promise you this t..." I was saying when his voice boomed.

"Shut the hell up! You cannot stop my reality. Not this time." He finished. His eyes held a dark promise.

Backing the city below, James raised his arms like he would fly and let himself go. I heard the collective gasps as everyone watched in total shock.

I acted immediately, holding unto his left foot. He was damn heavy and I was struggling to pull him into the ward, while his upper body hung outside.

"Let me go," the idiot struggled, kicking his feet in every direction.

"Get me a shot of diazepam injection," I screamed and a nurse quickly a filled syringe of the dose I needed before handing the syringe to me.

"Stay put, you senseless child," I growled.

I quickly injected him and he went limp instantly. Tossing the syringe somewhere, I heard a janitor scurry to pick it up to trash it.

I tried dragging him away from the window but the psycho was too heavy.

Glancing back at the male doctors just standing there watching me struggle, I yelled. "Nitwits, do not just stand there. Help me."

Four of them ran to my aid and we carried James to his bed. I covered him up with the bed cover and wiped beads of sweat off my forehead.

"Phew!" That was a close call.

I had already conjured up the headlines that would appear on the papers tomorrow. The hospital would have been in deep shit. And I was sure the Carters would sue us for damages. All because of a dimwit who did not value his own life.

I looked over at him. He looked so at peace, and yet so much seemed to trouble him. I checked the monitors and was relieved his vitals were stabilizing

Turning around, I saw the small crowd had begun to disperse. Kathy quickly engulfed me in a hug and I leaned into her hold, exhaustion suddenly washing over me.

"You are okay." She assured me. "You did great."

Dr. Einstein had approached us and we disentangled from our embrace. I straightened my uniform.

" I am proud of you, Nurse Mira. You handled the situation pretty well. You never disappoint," he hailed me and I gave a right smile.

"Thank you, sir." I rasped.

"I would say you are the best person for this job. As I watched you take charge of the situation, I decided to make you his personal nurse," he said.

He continued when he saw me nod. "You will be with him twenty four hours until he recovers. You might also need to visit his home when he has been discharged."

My eyes bulged in horror. "What?"

My work was in the hospital. It had always been that way since I became a nurse. So home service was new to me.

"Yes." He affirmed.

My mouth hung open. "What? You just planned that without even letting me agree on it?"

"No official can handle Mr. Carter like you did. I am sure you would do a great job." He explained.

I looked at him skeptically. I had a nagging feeling about this. There were nurses even more qualified than me for the job. So why would Dr. Einstein choose me?

"The Carters are willing to pay you any amount. As we speak, your salary has been tripled," he added.

Kathy squeezed my bicep. I was sure she had that 'oh my god fuck me' look.

I tried to get a rein on my racing thoughts. I would not let the money blind my reasoning. What did I stand to lose if I went ahead to do this? This dude seemed persistent on dying and he seemed like a lot of work. Could I handle it?

But my home needed extra cash now, especially since Greta was in college. Ma and Pa had retired, so the responsibility fell on me to provide.

Plus if I could actually pull this off, my rep would be unbeatable. I would be on crazy demand and more opportunities were to sure to open up for me.

I should not miss this opportunity. Moreover, what could go wrong?

"Okay then. I will do it," I announced and Dr. Einstein beamed, his dentition on full display.

"Great. We would need you to sign some papers. Meet me in the office when you are ready," the good doc said and exited the room.

I turned to Kathy who still had the 'oh my god fuck me' look. She turned to me wide-eyed. "You are going to be stinky rich, Mira," she sang.

"Keep your voice down," I rolled my eyes. "I think this is more responsibility than I should actually take on."

She swatted my shoulders. "Shut up. You will be fine. I know you. You can survive even in the desert with no water. For days."

I giggled. "Now you are spitting utter nonsense."

My gaze fell upon James again. "I wonder what is going on in that head of his." I mused.

Kathy gripped my shoulders and placed her head just beside mine. "You will get to find out sooner. And then help him recover."

"Yea right. So much faith in me you have." I said derisively.

"By the way, you were chosen for the job because no nurse agreed to do it..."

"For real?" I gaped at her.

She smiled sweetly at me. "And because you would do great." She tapped my back and walked out.

Of course I was thrown under the bus. I knew something fishy was going on. I wondered why no one wanted to do it even with the juicy pay that came with it.

I had finally become a certified babysitter, I groaned in my mind.
