Chapter 4 Room 100

Chapter 4

"Don't be afraid, child." Miss Dorian said into my mind as she led me through hallways to what she said would be my bedroom. Attendants would bring my luggage up not long after they were thoroughly searched, as a precautionary measure.

What did I want to bring? Bombs?

"Drugs, Alcohol. We take our students health very seriously." She replied and when I frowned at her, she raised an eyebrow.

"Stop it." I warned, uncaring of who she was.

"I didn't speak into your mind just now."

Oh.

"Why did you do it the first time?"

"Testing your mental shields dear. Who knows? If you turn out to be a Minder, you could even shut me out."

"What a nice ability to have." I answered, voice dripping with sarcasm and she merely grinned, reminding me that I'd ignored how beautiful and ageless she looked.

"Here we are. This is your room. Your roommates already know to expect you. They've been assigned to give you a tour of the place come sunrise. Tonight, you will join everyone for dinner where you will be introduced to the students. See you there."

Before I could reply, she placed a kiss on my mouth and took two normal human steps before vanishing with a speed that was definitely other-worldly.

Looking down the hallway and to my left where Miss Dorian vanished, I took in a deep breath before knocking softly on what would be my room for my stay in Reaper Academy.

Room 100.

When I didn't hear a response, I raised my hand to knock when the door swung open and a girl around my age with light brown hair in pigtails and honey brown eyes stared at me, her eyes widening after a moment.

"Hi." I squeaked and she blinked slowly before moving away from the door.

"Please come in."

Nodding, I entered and took in the room.

It was wider than I imagined from the outside with three beds side by side resting against one end save for the lockers in between them.

There were three reading tables on another end, a full length mirror and book shelves resting high on the wall.

There were three wardrobes on another side of the wall. There was another door which I suspected led to the bathroom.

I'd expected a dormitory setting with bunks. This was way better. I didn't know why I still wasn't pleased with the fact that the living conditions seemed better.

"This used to a palace so the rooms were quite large and when remodeled, it meant we could live like this."

Turning around to face my roommate, I found her sitting on the bed in the center and from the empty bed on her right, I suspected that was to be my space.

"Come, sit. My name is Alma. Alma Perez." She patted her bed with a warm smile that reminded me of the toddler that always smiled at me when I went to buy books from her mother's bookstore.

"I'm Helena. But you can call me Lena."

I replied as I sat on her bed carefully.

Nodding, she stretched out her hand.

"I'm going to pretend I don't know who you are. Nice to meet you, Helena."

I'd forgotten I was a bit of a celebrity.

"Nice to meet you too. I don't mean to pry, but you smell different. What are you?"

Smiling, she waved her hands at me and gave me a grin full of teeth and that's when I saw it. Fangs but smaller.

Half vampire, half human.

I'd never come across one before.

"I'm a halfling. Well, that's what they call us. Never met one before?"

When I shook my head, she nodded in understanding.

"Well, we're very few here. It's considered a high honour to be found worthy of this great academy especially as a halfling." Her voice dripped with sarcasm that made me grin.

Alma wasn't so bad.

"I'm a mixed breed and apparently as the only one, I didn't have a say in whether I needed to be at the Academy, so here I am, ready to slay big bad monsters."

Rising to her feet, she went to a fridge and brought out two small bottles of flavored blood drinks.

Handing one to me, she raised hers in the air

"Well, cheers to us both. To slaying monsters and finishing strong."

Touching my bottle to hers, I took a large gulp when I heard the door open and a blonde stormed into the room, drenched in sweat.

She stopped on her way to the bathroom, took one look at us, sniffed deep and her frown deepened, her blue eyes narrowing in on me.

"Vami." She breathed and when I grinned, showing her my four fangs, she bristled. From her scent, she was a full vampire.

"Say hi, Georgia, this is Lena, our new roommate."

"Hello, Georgia."

Still stunned by my presence in the room or the fact that I was real, I don't know which, she blinked slowly before she huffed.

"Dinner is in 10 minutes. I'm heading to the bathroom."

"But..." She slammed the door to the bathroom before Alma could protest. The shower started running almost immediately and when I turned to look at Alma, she gave me an apologetic smile.

"That's Georgia Smith. I'm sure you've heard of Smith refineries."

Smith refineries was one of the biggest oil companies in the country.

When I nodded, she shrugged.

"I'm not saying that's why she acted that way towards you. She's not the friendliest but she's an okay roommate. I'm sure she's just had a bad day..."

"Trust me, her reaction is not the unusual one. I get that everyday. Yours is."

Being disliked wasn't a big deal for me and the more people hated me, the better. That meant they'd leave me alone.

"Well, I know all about not fitting in, being a halfling so who am I to be mean to you just because you're different? I am too."

Well, when worded like that, she made some sense.

An alarm went off and when I looked in the direction of where a sound box was connected on the wall, I heard Alma say

"It's dinner time."

Time to meet the rest of the Academy.

What could go wrong?
