Chapter 007|Most prized possession
"What is going to happen now?" Ron mumbled. We were huddled at a corner whispering, while Nicholas and Ashton who was called from the party that Mason was retained in downstairs, still entertaining people and hopefully with his enthusiasm and his life of the party lifestyle was filling the void our absence was supposed to cause, glared at the both of us.
Jackson has been quiet and hasn't uttered a word to me since he had mystifyingly and very quickly became sober and looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here with us outside my father's study while I waited earnestly, putting a brave front for Ron's sake even though I was panic stricken of Dad's verdict.
"You just had one job, Amelia," Nicholas started sternly, "One thing to do. Just one. Kiss this kid right behind you at midnight yet you had to somehow mess it up and got yourself involved with an enemy of this family who also happens to a Mayor."
"It wasn't Amelia's fault. How would she have expected another man who wasn't Jackson at the terrace? And he was wearing the same mask as him__" I squeezed Ron's palm stopping him from defending me further. It was no use.
I had disgraced the Slovakia's name and nothing would stop me from paying for it now and with some luck, I hope Dad can take care of this so called Mayor, perhaps give me a slap or two as a corrective measure to prove a point and then let me marry Jackson because up until now though he wasn't an ideal choice, I would take him over being in this house with Nicholas who was still burning a hole through my forehead with a glare and Ashton who was being frighteningly quiet while staring at me like he wanted to dispose of me quickly and be done of it quickly.
Best case scenario that would happen if Dad can let go of how in his opinion I have ridiculed an age long tradition.
Worst case scenario it doesn't and I'm trapped with siblings who would always make a point to remind me of this mistake incessantly.
Though the second option perturb me it wasn't something I couldn't handle. Just stay out of their way and try to be invisible as long as it was possible which was forever. Besides, I have done it for the past eighteen years so this time it would be a walk in the park.
I was ready for anything I thought as I squeezed Ron's arm reassuringly.
JASON'S POV
"Let's just get this over with." Romania said closing the door of his soundproof study behind us. A man who had trust issues imprinted into his heart that his own home wasn't even an exception. Wow, real fatherly figure.
"Get what over with?" I mumbled casually, feigning ignorance while making myself comfortable on a black couch that he didn't offer me, grinning while discovering that watching the almighty Romania hyperventilate was a pastime I could get used to in no time.
"Son, we are definitely not acquaintances and I want to believe you didn't pull this stunt of walking into my house like a welcomed visitor even when you know I can get you killed."
I chuckled. The same threats, the same bark. Some people just never change or evolve. But I couldn't even pretend to be surprised, the man was still hinged with the 70's way of life so of course change was completely unwelcomed in his life.
"You can but you won't and both of us knows why."
Rossi Domonique, my grandfather and godfather which wasn't my choice to make unfortunately else I would have nothing to do with a feared ex Italian mafia leader who had severed all ties with my father, when he had picked the best option a miserable bastard like him could be fortunate to have; marrying my mother and going against his father's express wish not to. And although her love for him was one I couldn't grasp till she died so I couldn't tell if his rebelliousness has been worth it, my grandfather who hadn't extended his indifference to my father to me despite how many times I have told him he wasn't my family, still acted as my security and the reason for my immunity regardless of many influential criminals I had to step on countless of times to make a point, hence Romania with all his bloated ego knew better than to lay a finger on me as he couldn't risk such a war and bloodshed since only I singled out of my family was untouchable.
Besides, he would be stupid to kill a Mayor and not just any Mayor, One of the youngest, popular ones who was not a newbie to the media houses. I can almost imagine the all-time coverage of my murder especially since I had powerful friends, one of which was downstairs waiting for me hence he knew I was here. With the power of journalism and a loyal friend on my side, add an estranged Mafia relative, even I wouldn't kill me regardless of how infuriating I turned out to be. It was too much paperwork and too many enemies.
"What do you want Jason? I have an engagement party going on downstairs of which I'm a host I need to return back to."
I smiled. "Yes, that.... Amelia the daughter of Romania, that was mentioned way frequently but yet the world was not given the privilege of even a peek at her." I grinned at him like we were old friends. Taking a sip of the brandy he had just poured me, and nodding in appreciation of the beverage. Taking my time just to infuriate him and it worked. I saw the tick. "She must be something I perceive. Some might even dare to call her your most prized possession, but we both know that is a lie. But she is just enough to make you lose sleep at night."
He glared at me, and I know his anger which was now because I was keeping him from a party would be doubled soon once he understands I wasn't a nuisance just tugging at the sleeve of his designer dress shirt just to bid his time away to a waste.
"I wouldn't ask you again, why are you here? And what do you want from me?"
"Me? I'm at a party so my main agenda was just to have fun. Your parties regardless of your ridiculous dress ups are rumoured to be quite something. Wanted to see that for myself." I relaxed on the chair and gave him a smug grin as I now noticed his relaxed posture. "But as fate would have it. I got lost and found myself kissing your daughter, now I would have call that an incident, kisses happen all the time ..." I gave him a pointed stare and drawled a bit. "... Even more. But it was midnight and in some cultures including yours that automatically makes her my wife. Wait.... You're a true traditionalist of your heritage so you should know this."
He gave me a blank stare and I was impressed that he wasn't combusting in anger at what I had implied, but I didn't expect anything less from a man I've spent the most part of my life loathing and desiring to destroy.
"And why would I even do such a thing? What gave you the impression that I would just hand my daughter over to a man like you?"
I chuckled. "You mean a man that hates you so much and wants to crush your descendants which also include your precious fragile daughter?" I brought out a flash drive from my tuxedo's inner pocket which had made me keep Sylvia for so long even though we both know it was a lucky break granted to her as a result of Romania's middlemen carelessness. Although it wasn't good enough an evidence to create a smudge in Romania's perfect figure image, it was just the right amount needed to make the right people snoop around.
"May I?" I flashed him a patronizing smile taking his laptop that was on top of his study table without waiting for his reply not believing that this piece of what I had considered non-essential evidence would come in handy and at the very right time.
Inserting the drive and clicking on just the video he needed to see I turned the screen to his view and there it was, his workers openly talking about the underground warehouse they had dug before his thug dogs had shot them.
He closed the laptop the minute he was done watching the video and with a relaxed composure he regraded me with a wry smile and I rolled my eyes inwardly, not believing I had to spell the implication of my little video to him word by word.
"Even though I'm not optimistic enough to think you don't have enough lies to explain what they were talking about and even explain why all the men in this video are dead, but I'm aware of a large consignment worth billions you are expecting next month." I held his gaze now seeing a flicker of understanding now hitting his eyes. "That was the point of the marriage. A relation that had something to do with blood to ensure a bind between you and your right hand man and improve the trust between you both because let us face it being a criminal doesn't really instill the moral loyalty in any fellow.. " I relaxed on the couch and beamed.
