Chapter 5 Search

If the Goddess's eyes could shoot daggers right now, Xavier had long met Alma.

The amount of anger Freyja held for whatever dress she was wearing right now is currently soaring through the roof. She doesn't understand why she had to go through all that process just to wear a dress that is according to the maids, 'fit for the occasion.' If she can just take Xavier's life in exchange for the pain she had to experience, she would.

Feeling like he would burn in his seat, Xavier cleared out his throat in order to speak. "So, my lady, in which town do you want to move? Are you going to stay here in the capital, or do you want to be in somewhere quiet?"

'Which town?' Once again, Freyja is being presented with a question she doesn't know the answer to. While yes, she get to travel from places to places because of her job, she isn't really familiar with the places that exists in the human world.

Whenever a human is bound to die, she gets teleported into the place where it happens and that is when she fulfill her duties. She gets called where she is needed, that is how it works.

The General noticed how she went quiet. Staring at her, Xavier then realized she was having trouble deciding.

"If you still don't have a place in mind, then it's fine. You don't need to think so hard about it."

Freyja sighed in relief. It's good that the General is quick at reading her moods, or what she's thinking about. If he doesn't, then she really doesn't know what to do.

Xavier smiled when he saw that she relaxed, "We can just go around and take a look at the houses that are up for sale, I'm sure there will be a lot."

"Thank you, General. I'm really grateful for your help." The Goddess said with outmost sincerity. She really appreciates that despite her whole existence being questionable, he still willingly lent a hand.

"Don't sweat it, it's what I am supposed to do." Was Xavier's reply, giving the Goddess a playful wink.

---

Walking around town with the popular General obviously caught many people's attention. The Goddess could feel their burning gaze from the back of her head, and it might just slowly burn a hole.

Meanwhile Xavier, who was oblivious to all the eyes that watched him, decided to try and start a conversation with her, "My lady... I know it's late to ask you about this but, may I know your name?"

"My name?" Freyja repeated, earning a nod from the General.

Telling her real name would only risk her identity. She is a major God, and whether she likes it or not, majority of the humans know her.

Each deities have their own temple and shrines, and even devotees. She might not have actively participated in the days that the humans have set in which they pray for her, still, sometimes, she grace them with blessings and gifts that will someday help them in resting in peace... she is the Goddess of Death after all.

"Well, you can call me Fay." It sounds close to her real name and it was the only name she could come up with.

"Is that a nickname, my lady?"

"Yes, you can consider it something like that."

Xavier smiled at the thought of finally knowing her name. He's been trying to find the right time where he can ask her name without him sounding like a creep.

"It fits you." He said, "I don't need to say mine since I assume you already know it. I'm quite well known."

"Right."

No, of course she doesn't know. There are a lot of things she doesn't know, and his name is the first on that list. She took up his offer to stay on his place because she felt guilty rejecting him when he looks that genuine in wanting to help her. Plus, he asks so many questions that she doesn't even know how she managed to answer. She's even amazed at how relaxed she had been so far when she was experiencing a lot, ever since she descended.

After that conversation, they went on in finding a suitable home that would fit her budget. How did she have money you ask? The gold earrings Alma made her wear turned out to be worth a lot, and so she sold it. That was what she used when she bought all those foods last night in the night market.

Now, only half of the money is left. Xavier told her that with the money she currently have now, can only afford a small cottage that is usually sold to commoners. Freyja didn't understand why he looked like he was hesitant to tell her. Was it probably because he was scared he had to pay half the amount in case the money goes short? Or was it because he was worried she would get mad that a cottage was all she could get?

Either way, she doesn't care anymore. As long as she can get a house so she can finally get rid of him and his annoying questions that just makes her question life.

After going through several houses, they decided to take a break in a bench nearby, with Xavier volunteering to go and buy food. Freyja wasn't even given a chance to complain before he left. And when he got back, all she could do was mutter a 'thank you' and eat the food.

"So have you chosen anything yet, my lady?" Xavier asked while munching on his piece of bread.

"I was thinking about that fourth house we went to... It was quite far from the noisy market and not too close by the gates so it was a bit quiet. I kind of like where it is located." Was Freyja's answer after taking a bite out of her food.

"But it is at an alley so it will be a little unsafe."

The Goddess stared at the General as he began to worry about her safety again, "It's fine, General." She smiled, "I may not look like it, but I am strong enough to take down at least ten of your men."

She can do much more than that but oh well.
