"Come on, Amaka. Put on your big girl panties..." Amaka muttered to herself and without second-guessing her actions, she carelessly threw his door open...and immediately wished that she hadn't.
Right on Dolapo's desk was the same woman that Dolapo had cheated on her with, making out fervently on his desk. Amaka thought that seven years would be enough to get over the man but the vision had burned itself into her memory, and she felt betrayed all over again. The door slamming open had gotten their attention, they both stared at her.
"Baby, what is she doing here?"
"I work here, Seun. I should be asking you what you're doing here since the only work you are and can ever be familiar with is fucking people's husbands."
Seun's face contorted into a frown as she glared at Amaka, but she couldn't give a fuck. Dolapo on the other hand looked like he wanted the ground to open up and swallow him. She honestly wished it had.
"Well, what do you want or can't you see that we're busy? Or have you added blindness to your bareness as well?"
"Seun!!!" Dolapo pulled away from her while Amaka just stood there dumbfounded. That had been what had driven them apart, her inability to carry a child. Her mother-in-law hated her and coupled with the fact that she wasn't from their tribe and didn't speak their language was also another issue. Dolapo was a mama's boy too. He did whatever his mother said and believed whatever nonsense she had told him to.
"Amaka...I'm sorry."
"Babe, don't apologize. She does look like she had seen a ghost, should we call a doctor or something?"
"Seun, just stop."
"Stop what? You know, I think she needs to know about the good news." That piqued Amaka's interest. The first thing that came to her mind was that he had gotten her pregnant.
"I and Lapo are getting married come June!!!" Seun began waving her left hand, making sure that Amaka saw the bright rock sitting on her finger. Amaka could feel her heart constrict, the betrayal and the shock of it all were almost too much for her to process. And for a second, she too wanted to hurt Seun and blurt out that she had a son with her fiancé but then the odds would be against her. Now that he had someone he wanted to settle down with, he might forcefully take Emeka away from her.
Dolapo walked towards Amaka but Amaka just took a step back and walked out the door without another word. She kept it together until she was had securely closed her office door behind her, then she let the waterworks flow.
She cried because seeing them together, like that, had opened up old wounds, and not just that, it had added salt to it and made her feel inadequate. She didn't know how long she had been sitting on the floor crying but she got it together, sat at her desk, and used the webcam of her computer to put her face to rights. She didn't know how she was going to get through the day but she knew she had to try. She did need the job after all.
Amaka put on her earpiece and blasted music when the sound of them fucking was becoming too much for her, and it felt like Seun was exaggerating it. Like she wanted her to hear it. Amaka looked at the clock and saw that it was time for a lunch break, she had worked for hours on end, sitting in a place and a particular position without movement and as she stood up, all her muscles and joints complained bitterly.
Amaka did a mild stretch and walked around her office for a bit before picking up her wallet and left her office building, going across the street to the local restaurant that served as the main food source for most of the employees at Globe Logistics. After a plate of Abacha and a chilled Pepsi, Amaka was back at her office, working. The intercom rang and with a grunt she picked it up, although she already had an inkling about who was on the other end.
"Come into my office. Now."
Amaka swore when she dropped the phone and decided that she might as well use the opportunity to give him the documents where his signature is needed. They were due at the finance department before the end of the day.
She knocked and opened the door after a muttered 'come in'. She wasn't going to treat him anything more than what it was. A job.
"You sent for me, Mr. Babatunde." Dolapo looked askance at her at the sudden formal tone but was met with Amaka's poker face. And he knew not to prod Amaka when she was in that mode.
"I wanted to have a conversation with you, Amaka. Take a seat." Amaka took a seat and neatly crossed her legs. As much as possible, she wanted to come across as confident and unbothered.
"Miss Anyanwu."
"What?"
"You called me Amaka, sir, it's Miss Anyanwu." Dolapo looked perplexed for a moment but nodded his head regardless.
"I wanted to apologize for what happened earlier?"
"It's none of my business, sir. I shouldn't have walked in when I did. You just needed some quality time with your fiancée."
Dolapo sighed and rubbed his forehead. He wanted to apologize to her for Seun. For the way, their engagement was sprung upon her and even for his infidelity seven years ago but she was been indifferent. He didn't know if that was truly how she felt or if she was just putting up a front.
Either way, he felt a type of way with the way she was acting.
"Amaka..."
"Miss Anyanwu." Dolapo almost banged his fists on his desk but caught himself just in time. He had no right to be getting angry and he knew it.
"I'm sorry. For everything."
"I do not understand why you're apologizing to me sir, I..."
"Please stop this!"
"I don't understand sir. You want me to stop talking?"
That was it. Dolapo had had enough. He stood up from his chair and stalked around to her, Amaka stood up and tried to put some distance between them but it was too late. Dolapo pulled her into his arms and crushed his lips on hers, Amaka tried to fight him off to no avail and soon found herself giving into the kiss. He always had that effect on her. One second, she would want to kill him and the next, she would be the one clinging on to him for dear life.
Dolapo wrapped one palm around her neck, angling her head and effectively choking her and the other hand went around her waist, pulling her even closer to him such that Amaka didn't know where she stopped and where he began. And she loved it. Dolapo knew her body so well, and it appeared that after seven years, she still had the same preferences in bed. Dolapo hoisted her to sit on his desk and wrapped her legs around him, making her pencil skirt ride up to the top of her thighs, and making his hardness rub against her very core.
And then the images of Seun in this same position earlier in the day came unbidden to her head and she pushed Dolapo away from her. she stood from his desk and tugged her skirt back down to her knees, but not before flashing Dolapo her panties and her caramel thighs that were now much thicker than he remembered. He loved it.
"What the fuck is wrong with you, Dolapo?!" At that point, Amaka had given up all pretenses. She was pissed and coupled with the fact that her brain was in a foggy haze of unfulfilled desires. She was pissed!
"Oh, so now it's Dolapo? What was with all the formal bullshit?"
"Seven years, Dolapo, seven years and you're still a dog!"
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"You cheated on me with...her and you were just about to cheat on her with me. What is it exactly? Is it that it gives you some sort of kick to cheat?"
"Amaka..."
"I cannot believe there was a time I loved you. You are a conceited bastard!"
"Amaka..."
"Don't call my name, you swine!"
Amaka was becoming hysterical, she knew it but she didn't want to stop. It felt good to be able to vent like this and it was in that moment that she didn't do this when she found them in her matrimonial bed seven years ago. She had just walked out of the house and came back to fetch her things.
Amaka was tired of being reasonable.
Dolapo was trying to calm her down but it wasn't walking, he made to kiss her again but Amaka was ready for him. The second he wrapped his hands around her waist, she sent her fist into his face and she smiled when he stumbled back and when she saw blood trickle down from his nose.
"What the fuck, Amaka?!"
"You are my ex-husband, I am not looking to change that status, and you're also a man spoken for. By his mistress. I suggest you keep it in your pants, sir, I am no longer yours to touch or kiss whenever you like."
Amaka watched as Dolapo held his handkerchief to his nose, the bleeding stopped sooner than she would have liked but she was happy that he got the message.
"I have left some documents on your desk; they are needed by the finance department before the end of today. And also, you have an appointment with some shareholders, that is scheduled for 2:00 pm. If that would be all sir, I would love to be on my way."
Without waiting for his response, Amaka left his office and walked back into hers. She was surprised that her steps were steady. She closed the door behind her and for the second time that day, Amaka broke down in her office. and it was all because of a particular bastard.
