Chapter 5 I'm Clive's fiancée

The following morning Candice immediately got out of the bed when she noticed that she was the only one left in the bed. She hurried into the kitchen and discovered that the handsome stranger was now making breakfast for both of them.

"Did you sleep well Mrs. Stevens?" Clive asked the moment he saw Candice entering the kitchen.

"Yes, I did thank you." Candice insincerely answered while scolding herself in her heart. 'How can I sleep well with a strange man holding me tightly?' she kept on scolding herself internally.

Clive's phone started ringing. He checked the caller and saw that it was Julie. There was an expression of displeasure on his face.

"Answer my phone and let the person know that you are my wife." Clive said with a serious voice. Candice hesitated but the stern glare from Clive made her quickly answer the phone and put it on speaker.

"Hello, I'm sorry my husband is making me breakfast. Can I take a message?" Candice had no idea whom she was speaking to. All she wanted was to save herself.

"What are you doing with my fiancée's phone? Pass that phone to Clive. And what do you mean by your husband?" Julie was bursting with anger. She thought Clive was playing tricks on her.

Candice was speechless and Clive gestured her to keep talking to Julie. She saw this as a way to redeem herself if she played along.

"I don't even know who you are and I'm the one who should be angry because you have called my husband." Candice could not understand her own confidence.

"I'm Julie Marson Clive's fiancée and who are you and why do you keep calling him your husband?" Candice could feel the anger in Julie's voice.

Candice was not sure if Clive wanted her to give Julie her name. She looked at him and he nodded to show his approval.

"I'm Candice Stevens Clive's wife and please stop calling my husband." Candice hung up the phone without saying anything more.

She looked at Clive and had now a slight idea of what was happening. She was scared to ask for fear that it might backfire. She was a little bit relieved since she could tell that Clive needed her to push this woman away.

Julie did not call back but within minutes Clive got another call. This time it was his father. He chuckled before he took the call. Candice could tell that he was expecting this call and she wondered who the person on the other end of the line was.

"What is this nonsense about you having a wife Clive? You need to grow up." Mathew was not pleased with his son. He knew he would do anything not to marry Julie. He was not ready to entertain any of his irresponsible behaviour.

"Dad I have been married to Candice for eight months that's why I have been telling you to stop encouraging Julie. I love my wife and there is nothing you can do about it." Candice was stunned and she was now getting a clear picture of what she had got herself into.

"You should bring her to me before I take back my company from you." Mathew threatened his son.

Clive was not moved by his father's threats. "Dad you forget that I have my own chain of hotels. You forced me into managing your company. Honestly, I don't need it, so you can have it back anytime you want." Clive spoke calmly to his father.

"But still, you should bring her to us." His father said and Clive looked at Candice. He knew that he was using her but did not want to hurt her. She used him and he was happy the way everything turned out.

"I will think about it dad. Candice just started her medical residency so I will see when it is convenient for her to meet you. I do not want to jeopardise my wife's career. We will discuss this when I return tomorrow." Clive concluded his conversation with his father but immediately an international call came through.

Clive laughed hysterically before he answered it and put it on speaker. Candice could not understand why Clive was laughing like that.

"Big brother please send us a photo of our sister-in-law." Thea asked without even greeting her brother.

"Is she prettier and nicer than Julie?" Tia asked and Clive was enjoying Candice's stunned face.

"Londoners, you should first of all ask how your big brother is doing before firing questions." He turned onto Candice and spoke. "Candice, talk to my sisters Thea and Tia, I will be back." He deliberately left Candice to talk to his sisters.

"Thea and Tia how are you and how is London?" Candice asked and could not think of anything more to say. She did not know Clive at all and was worried that they might ask too many questions.

"We are good and please look after our brother." Thea was excited and Tia took over. "Please keep him busy so that he does not keep watching us like teenagers." Candice could not help but laugh.

Candice couldn't believe that she had acquired a family like that. Her own family had abandoned her, and she only had Trevor. They chatted a while trying to know each other better. They exchanged numbers and promised to follow each other on social media.

Clive came back after taking a shower and noticed Candice worriedly sitting on the sofa. Her eyes were closed, and she was running her fingers in her hair. She opened her eyes when she felt Clive's warm breathe across her face.

"Mr. Stevens, I know I wronged you and I am willing to face the consequences of my actions. Can you at least tell me what you want so that we can all move on!" Candice did not want anything else to go out of control. Now that everything was out in the open, she could divorce Clive easily. She did not however want to initiate the divorce for fear that Clive would retaliate and make things difficult for her.

"You are my wife Candice. How can you ask a husband what he wants from his wife?" Clive spoke with a gentle voice. Candice did not know what to think.

'Trevor my friend what did you get me into?' Candice had self-pity inside. She was wondering if this prison was going to be worse than the normal prison.

Clive spent the rest of the morning working on his laptop. Candice normally did her laundry on a Saturday but decided to let it pass. She cleaned her apartment and sat down on the sofa to watch TV.

Her phone rang and thought it was Trevor, but it was one of the nurses from the hospital. She quickly remembered that she was supposed to attend Ruth's daughter's third birthday party.

"Ruth my dear something came up. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend Shannon's party." Candice apologised sincerely. "I know I was not supposed to miss my goddaughter's third birthday party, but I will make it up to her."

"It's fine Candice I have finished my work, so we can go to the little one's birthday party." Candice was stunned hearing Clive's words. She had not realised that Clive was listening to her conversation with Ruth.

"Candice who is the man in the background? If you do not come, I will know that he is the reason." Ruth who had heard Clive talking asked her embarrassed friend. Now Candice had no way out but to go with Clive.
