Chapter 7 I'm Pregnant With Your Baby

Sitting on the chair outside the ICU, Pauline couldn't help but conjure up the image of her grandfather lying quietly in the bed, hooked up to the ventilator. She felt as if he would wake up any second and say, "Ha, Pauline, I tricked you again!" Back when her mother died, her grandfather was the only one who had been there for her. Everyone else had been too busy fighting over the legacy left by her mother, including her father. At that time, her grandfather had been much healthier than he was now. She had always been able to depend on him.

Thinking of this, she felt a lump in her throat, and tears began streaming down her cheeks.

"Don't cry."

A piece of tissue appeared in front of her. Pauline raised her head and saw Daniel, her grandfather's attending doctor.

She took the tissue and wiped the tears on her face. Then, she flashed Daniel an embarrassed smile. "I'm sorry, Dr. Bai. I haven't even thanked you for everything you've done till now. How about I treat you to a meal someday?"

Daniel raised his eyebrows. "Well, Miss Song, you can begin with dropping the formalities and just calling me by my name. 'Dr. Bai' sounds strange!"

"In that case, why do you keep calling me 'Miss Song'?" Pauline countered.

Daniel smiled and raised his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay, you are right. Does that mean I can call you by name?"

Pauline laughed for the first time in a while. "Dr. Bai, I didn't expect you to be like this in private. I've always thought that you were a serious person."

"So you're saying I'm not serious now?" Daniel's smile widened.

Pauline quickly waved her hands and said, "No, no."

"Grandpa is lying in a critical condition but you still have the time to flirt with a man? Grandpa will be heartbroken if he finds out," a sarcastic voice cut in all of a sudden.

Pauline turned around and saw Tiffany, Peter, her father, and her father's lover standing in front of her.

"Daniel was just..."

Before she could finish her words, Peter interrupted her. "Daniel? We haven't even broken off the engagement yet and you're already flirting with other men. Can you be any more shameless?"

Tiffany took the opportunity to chime in as well. "Not only did you put Grandpa in danger, but you also didn't cancel the engagement with Peter. How can our family have a person as shameless as you?"

"I'm Charlie Song's attending doctor. Miss Song and I were just discussing his condition," Daniel quickly explained. He felt awkward being caught in a family conflict. Knowing that he would embarrass Pauline if he continued to stay here, he bade her goodbye. "I'm leaving now."

Not long after Daniel left, Hedy arrived. While comforting Pauline, she cursed Edmund for being a bastard.

Suddenly, a large group of people appeared at the end of the corridor, making a lot of noise as they approached. Pauline raised her head and realized that they were all her relatives from Robin Song's side of the family. Robin Song, her grandfather's younger brother, hadn't inherited the family business but had inherited her great-grandfather's character. He was dissolute and lazy, and had a lot of illegitimate children.

"Uncle, why are you here?" Anthony asked, surprised to see Robin Song.

"What? My older brother is sick. Do I need any other reason to come here?" Due to all the bad habits that he had had as a young man, Robin's voice was weak when he spoke.

"No, Uncle, you misunderstood me. Father has just gone to sleep. Would you like to come back tomorrow?" Anthony smiled apologetically.

"It's okay, we just want to see him. We will be relieved if we see that he is fine with our own eyes."

"We are also members of the Song family. Why aren't you letting us see him?"

"Yes! Why are you stopping us? Is he dying?"

Robin's family members surrounded Anthony and the others, complaining unhappily.

It was a well-known fact that all families had internal conflicts over wealth and power, and that if the head of the family fell ill, everyone would try to take advantage of the situation. Even a person as useless as Anthony knew that, so he couldn't let his uncle know that his father was seriously ill.

Looking at the faces of the hypocrites in front of her, Pauline could not help feeling disgusted. Her grandfather had been in the hospital for a long time and none of them had come to see him. But now that he was in the ICU, they were all clamoring to see him. 'They're all so well-informed,' she thought bitterly.

"Grandpa is still alive. Are you so anxious to divide the family property?" she asked with a sneer.

"What did you just say?" Robin Song asked in a booming voice. He raised his hand to slap her, but before he could, Daniel came out in a hurry and stopped him.

"Being so hot-tempered is not good for your health," he said, trying to lighten the mood. Then, he withdrew his hand, adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, and turned to Pauline. "Your grandfather has woken up. He asked everyone to come in."

Upon hearing this, the whole crowd outside the ICU immediately pushed Pauline aside and rushed in.

But from the hospital bed, Charlie looked at her and beckoned her inside. "Pauline, come here."

The people around her had no choice but to make way for her.

Once she was standing next to the bed, Charlie held her hand and said, "Pauline, as long as I'm alive, I won't let anyone bully you! Robin, did you think you could lay a hand on my granddaughter just because you are an elder? How dare you! And you, Anthony, can you even call yourself a father?"

The two men didn't dare to look into Charlie's eyes and immediately lowered their heads.

"Grandpa, it's okay, calm down," Pauline said softly. She hadn't expected that her grandfather would say something like that. Tears of gratitude and affection welled up in her eyes.

Now, she was even more determined than before to save her grandfather. As she leaned in to hug him, she swore to herself that this time, no matter what method she used, she would make Edmund agree to her request.

Before long, the nurse came to drive them away. "The patient just woke up and needs rest. Please leave."

Once the whole family dispersed, Pauline drove to the MC Group headquarters and found that the main hall was full of reporters. It seemed that they were holding a press conference. On stage, James was making a speech, while Edmund was sitting at the side. Next to Edmund was a woman who, from time to time, whispered something in his ear and laughed happily. Although Edmund didn't say anything to her in response, a gentle smile appeared on his face. When Pauline saw the two of them being so cozy with each other, she felt like her breath had been knocked out of her.

She knew the woman next to Edmund, who was a rising star of ballet. In the last national ballet competition, that woman had won the gold medal in the young women's category. In fact, both of them had learned ballet from the same teacher, Miss Lucy Wen.

However, Pauline knew that this was not the time to mull over the past and be upset. She couldn't forget her purpose of coming here, which was to beg Edmund to donate his bone marrow. Without that, her grandfather would die.

So, she took a deep breath and gritted her teeth before shamelessly rushing into the scene. "Mr. Lu, I'm pregnant with your child. You were too careless last time."

"Pregnant with my child?" Edmund asked in disgust, abruptly standing up. His cold aura seemed to freeze the whole room.
