Chapter 5 Keep The Last Dignity (Part Two)

Wendy, who was holding the apples, leaned against the door and didn't move for a long time. Her heart was pounding wildly, like the nervousness and fear when she kissed him for the first time, or the panting after running eight hundred meters in the sports meeting in high school. She was really afraid that if he really agreed to come in and have a seat just now, she really didn't know how to bring him into her house, where she had nightmares.

There was no light at home. Maybe Jeff hadn't come back yet. In the past four years, if it weren't for Jeff, Wendy knew that she couldn't make it today. She had made up her mind to marry Jeff for the rest of her time. Although she had never had sex with Jeff. However, living in the same house could destroy all her memories. She gently opened the door with the key, afraid of waking up her daughter who was sleeping. She fumbled and pressed the switch on the wall. The dazzling light of the incandescent lamp made her subconsciously block her eyes with her hands. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a man lying on the sofa. It was Jeff. The upper part of his body was on the sofa, but the lower part of his body fell to the ground, not even taking off his shoes.

"He drank too much again." Wendy murmured to herself as she walked over and was about to help him to bed. She just took off one of his shoes before he woke up. When he turned around and saw her, he kicked his foot and almost made Wendy fall. He raised his hand, pointed at her and asked, "Bitch, it's so late. Who did you hook up with?"

That was how he was. It was okay if he didn't drink. He often didn't come back for a few days and didn't talk to her when he came back. But when he was drunk, he came back to play drunken madness, pointed at her nose, scolded her, and sometimes beat her.

Wendy was used to his attitude. She acted as if she hadn't heard what he said. "Mom, you're back." Hearing the sound from the bedroom, Wendy knew that Jeff had woken up the child. She gave him a hard stare, turned around and left.

"Honey, why are you awake? Did Jeff and mother talk too loudly that you were awakened. Lie down and sleep. I'll tell Jeff to shut up. " Wendy bent over and stood beside Merry's bed, patting and coaxing her. This small bed was the used crib of Elma Peng's grandson who lived next door. In order to save some money, she asked for it for Merry to sleep on it. Seeing that the bed was not long enough for her daughter to sleep in, her eyes were instantly wet.

After settling down her daughter, Wendy walked out of the room and saw Jeff sleeping on the bed again. She walked over and was about to take off his clothes, but suddenly she smelled something unpleasant and immediately covered her nose with her hand.

She looked down and found that he had vomited all over the ground. The stinky smell filled the room. Wendy quickly ran away and opened all the windows in the room. She went to the kitchen and shoved the coal residue with a spade, evenly spreading it on the pile of vomit, and quickly cleaned it with a broom. After cleaning the floor with a mop, she fetched a basin of warm water to wipe his face. This time, he didn't resist. He just let her take off his clothes and wipe his face. After that, Wendy went to the kitchen to take the sober up soup in the fridge and heat up for him. Since she accepted his protection, he had been getting drunk gradually. So when she was free, she would always make a large glass of sober up soup and keep it in the fridge. When he needed it, she just heated it up.

She took it out of the fridge and put a few Hawthorn berries in it when she was about to heat it up. However, when she cut it with a knife, her finger was cut accidentally. The bright red blood immediately came out and dripped into the boiling soup, instantly diluted. She didn't care about it and simply wrapped it with paper. Then she poured the soup and took it out for him to drink.

Wendy was now a good fiancee. Although sometimes Jeff beat or scolded her when he drank too much, she wouldn't know where she was if he hadn't accepted Merry and taken care of her all the time. The house she was living in now belonged to Jeff. Since she moved in, the furniture had not been increased. It was also in this place, she saw Merry grow up day by day. But misfortunes never came singly, Merry had serious kidney disease then.

Finally, she arranged for Jeff to sleep. She fetched another basin of water and was about to wipe the stains that splashed on the sofa when he vomited just now.

She lowered her head and saw that the tissue tied to her hand had been soaked in blood and her fingers were stained with it. She saw that the blood was about to stop, she picked up the paper and threw it aside. Her hands were soaked in cold water to wash the rag. The sofa had been used for a long time, and the old leather had fallen down little by little. Sometimes it would get on the skin accidentally and was difficult to get it off.

After all this, Wendy had sweated a little, and the wet bang on her forehead made her feel uncomfortable. After a quick shower, Wendy climbed onto the bed. In the next room, Jeff had already snored. It turned out that this was a habit. Even though she sometimes quarreled with him during the day, and sometimes she was angry because he owed gambling debts outside, she felt at ease when she heard his snore at midnight. Unconsciously, in the past four years, she had become an ordinary woman who surrounded him and her child.

As usual, she reached out to take out the brooch under the pillow. She was shocked and disappeared. It suddenly occurred to her that Jeff had sold it to pay off his gambling debts a few days ago. Although she had a quarrel with him because of this, she often looked for it unconsciously before going to bed every day, thinking that it was still there.

Fortunately, she only put the brooch under the pillow. If he found the box, it would be disaster. Thinking of the box, she remembered that she gave it back to him in the morning, and that she had just met him at the door. Her calm mood was stirred up again. She couldn't think about it anymore. She forced herself not to think about it and closed her eyes to prepare for sleep.
