Chapter 3 An Invalid Check

As the sun began to set, its orange rays peaked through the leaves and casted its light on the road.

The two of them quietly walked side by side for a long time. Seeing that they were already far away from her house, Carolyn stole a glance at Derrick's hand. He tightly held her hand, but she pulled it back nervously. "Thank you for helping me just now. Why did you come to my home?"

Derrick slowly turned his head, took out a lady's wallet from his arms and handed it to her. "If I remember correctly, this belongs to you."

Carolyn's hands fumbled in her pockets and found that her wallet was really gone. She took it and gratefully responded, "Thank you. I didn't know..."

Thinking of the money, she couldn't help but frown. "But... You shouldn't have given her that two hundred thousand. I don't think it's possible for me to earn that money right now. How can I pay you back?"

Derrick gently looked down at her and said with a faint smile, "Then take it as if you're selling yourself to me."

"... I'd better go back and retrieve it for you!"

Carolyn turned around to head back home, but he stopped her.

"No." Derrick pulled her back. Seeing her serious face, he felt the need to explain himself. "That check is actually invalid."

After saying that, he carefully stared at Carolyn's face to see her reaction. However, she only looked surprise and confused.

"It turns out that check was used to bluff people... But if you help me like this, aren't you afraid that I'm the bad type of woman my stepmother said..." As a matter of fact, Carolyn only met him once. However, he had already helped her twice within such a short period of time.

As a stranger, his kindness made Carolyn feel flattered.

Derrick frowned slightly and said in a deep voice, "I don't know if you are a bad woman, but I won't believe a single word that your stepmother said."

His tone seemed to show her that he trusted her. It was like the warm spring water was flowing into her heart.

Carolyn couldn't remember what she had experienced before she lost her memory. But ever since she lost her memory seven years ago, so many things had happened. Her boyfriend left her, her sister sneered at her, and her stepmother cursed her... There was only coldness left in her world.

This man was the first and the only person who said such nice things to her and was even kind and gentle towards her.

When night fell, the homeless Carolyn followed him aimlessly.

The place she had called "home" might not belong to her anymore. She didn't even feel like going back.

Noticing that she had no other place to go, Derrick stopped and said, "I can offer you a place to live in. If you are not afraid that I'm a bad person..."

Carolyn was slightly stunned at the offer and smiled. "You've already helped me so much. If you are a bad person, then I am not any better..."

"So, you agree?"

He took a step closer. The smile in his eyes made Carolyn's heart beat faster inexplicably. She felt her cheeks turning red.

She never dared to go to a strange man's house before. However, she held a kind of attraction to him and easily let go of her guard whenever she was with him.

Derrick lived in a small apartment. It had one bedroom and one living room. It was enough for one person to live in. It looked a little cramped with the two of them inside as there was only one bed in the room. Carolyn took the pillow and headed over to lie on the sofa, but Derrick pressed her back onto the bed.

When she was about to say something, Derrick grabbed her pillow and walked out.

It was obvious that he gave her the bedroom.

He had done a lot for her today. How could she let the owner of this apartment sleep on the sofa? "How about we sleep together? Anyways, the bed is big enough for the both of us."

The way she said "sleep together" was very pure and honest, but to his ears, it obviously held a different meaning.

"Are you always so active with men?" Derrick teasingly narrowed his eyes and couldn't help but recall the first time he saw Carolyn. She also took the initiative to throw him on the bed... Although it was just a misunderstanding.

Rubbing between his eyebrows, he threw the pillow back to the bed and walked over to her. He bent over and pressed himself on her. "In that case, I'll have to reluctantly comply..."

He then stretched out his slender fingers to take off her clothes.

Carolyn was stunned for a while, but then realized what he meant. Her face immediately flushed a deep shade of red and she shrank into a corner. "I...I mean... You can sleep next to me! Let's sleep separately and not disturb each other!"

She dodged his hand, and placed the quilt in the middle of the bed as a divider. The movement left her breathless and her cheeks were blushing redder, which only made her lovelier and more attractive.

Carolyn looked back at Derrick and found him was leaning against the bed with a big grin on his face. It was not until then that she realized that he was deliberately making fun of her. She looked away with embarrassment.

"I see. Good night." He answered indifferently before he lazily stood up and walked to the other side. "Remember, from now on, don't casually say such words like 'sleep together' to any man. It would be fine if you said it to me, but others..."

"I, I know..." Carolyn scratched her hair, wishing to find a place to hide herself.
