Chapter 7 No.7

Kimberly Graves POV:

I stared into Evan's eyes. There was no bluff, no hyperbole. Only the cold, serious offer of a man who knew how to make problems disappear permanently. The silence stretched, thick and heavy in the room. The painkillers had created a strange, floating sensation, detaching me from my body's pain and leaving my thoughts sharp and clear.

Slowly, I shook my head. "No."

The single word hung in the air. Evan raised an eyebrow, a flicker of surprise in his otherwise stoic expression. He was waiting for an explanation.

A faint, humorless smile touched my swollen lips. "Letting him die would be a mercy," I said, my voice gaining strength. "He doesn't deserve mercy."

My gaze shifted to the window, to the black, starless sky beyond. I could picture Graves's face, that handsome, arrogant mask he showed the world.

"I want him alive. I want him to be perfectly, horribly aware as he watches everything he's built-his wealth, his status, his precious reputation-be dismantled, piece by piece, by my own hands."

This was more than revenge. It was a reclamation. For five years, I had been the silent partner, the brilliant strategist behind the curtain. He had built his empire on my ideas, then treated me like a decorative accessory. I had created him. I would uncreate him.

"I want him on his knees," I continued, my voice low and venomous. "Not because he's afraid of death, but because he's been utterly and completely defeated."

Evan looked at me then, truly looked at me. The coldness in his eyes was replaced by a glimmer of something else-respect, maybe even admiration. My body was a wreck, but my spirit was forging itself into something new, something unbreakable.

He gave a slight, formal nod. "I understand. Helios predicted as much. He said you never choose the easy path."

He pulled a sleek satellite phone from his coat pocket, dialed a number, and handed it to me. "He's on the line."

I took the phone, its cool weight solid in my hand. "Helios?"

His calm, familiar voice filled my ear. "Are you feeling any better?"

"I'll live," I said. The tone of my voice was different now. It wasn't the plea of a victim. It was the request of an ally. "I need your help."

"Name it."

"First, I need a place to stay. Somewhere completely off the grid, somewhere Graves can't find me even if he uses every resource he has."

"Done," Helios replied without hesitation. "The 'Aethelgard Estate' on the coast. Its security systems are managed by a private defense contractor. Graves doesn't have the clearance to even know it exists."

"Good. Second, I need a new identity. As far as the world is concerned, Kimberly Kramer died in this room tonight."

"The identity is already prepared. A complete legend, untraceable. What name do you want to use?"

I paused, thinking. I needed something simple, something anonymous, a symbol of the power I would now wield from the shadows.

"Just... K."

A low chuckle came from the other end of the line, a sound of genuine approval. "K. I like it. A variable of unknown quantity."

Evan's assistants had finished their work. They moved like ghosts, packing their equipment, leaving no trace they had ever been there. The only evidence was the clean bandages on my skin. Evan draped a new, soft cashmere coat over my shoulders, covering my tattered gown.

He helped me to my feet. My legs were shaky, but each step I took away from that bed, out of that room, felt firm, deliberate. I took one last look at the opulent prison I had called home for five years. There was no sadness, no nostalgia. Only the cold, clean finality of an executioner.

"One more thing," Helios said through the phone as we walked towards the private exit.

"What is it?"

"Your plan will require capital. Graves has undoubtedly frozen all your personal accounts."

My stomach tightened. It was the one logistical hurdle I hadn't solved. But I wouldn't be a charity case. "I'll figure out the money myself."

"No," Helios's voice was firm, leaving no room for argument. "This isn't a gift, K. It's an investment. A dedicated Swiss account has been activated for you. The initial seed funding is one billion dollars."

The air left my lungs. I stopped walking, stumbling slightly. One billion. The number was so vast it was abstract. It was the kind of money that didn't just open doors; it vaporized them.

A question, sudden and urgent, sprang to my lips.

"Helios," I breathed into the phone, my mind reeling. "Who is K?"
