Chapter 3 The woman they didn't know

The night air was cold against Elena's skin as she stepped out of the house but she didn't stop walking. Not when the door closed behind her. Not when the silence wrapped around her like a second skin. Not even when her vision blurred slightly from the tears she refused to let fall.

She kept moving. Step by step. Until the house-the life she had known-was no longer in sight. Only then did she stop. Her shoulders rose and fell slowly as she took a deep breath, steadying herself. Then, without hesitation, she reached into her bag and pulled out her phone.

Her fingers hovered over the screen for a second. Not shaking. Not uncertain. Just... deliberate.

She dialed a number. It rang once. Twice. Then- "Ms. Carter." The voice on the other end was calm and respectful. Expecting her.

Elena's lips curved slightly. "It's time," she said.

There was a brief pause. "As you wish," the voice replied. The call ended.

Elena lowered the phone slowly, her expression unreadable. Then she turned and walked toward a sleek black car parked quietly across the street.

The driver stepped out immediately, opening the door for her. "Good evening, ma'am." Elena nodded once and slid into the back seat. No hesitation. No second thoughts.

The car pulled away smoothly, disappearing into the night.

By the time Adrian stepped outside, she was gone. Completely. He frowned slightly, scanning the empty street.

"That was fast," Vanessa said from behind him, her tone light with amusement. "I expected more drama." Adrian didn't respond immediately.

Something about the way Elena had left...It didn't feel right, but he pushed the thought aside.

"It doesn't matter," he said. "She'll come back when she realizes she has nowhere else to go."

Vanessa smiled. "Of course."

Across the city, the car came to a slow stop in front of a towering glass building. Lights shimmered across its surface, reflecting power and wealth.

Elena stepped out, her heels clicking softly against the pavement as she looked up. For a brief moment, she simply stood there. Then she walked inside.

The moment the doors opened-Everything changed.

"Good evening, Ms. Carter." "Welcome back, ma'am."

Staff members straightened instantly, their voices filled with respect as she passed. Not surprise. Not confusion but recognition.

Elena didn't slow down and didn't acknowledge them beyond a small nod. Like this world-This place-Was completely normal to her. She stepped into a private elevator. Pressed a single button. Top floor.

As the doors closed, her reflection stared back at her from the mirrored walls. Gone was the broken woman from earlier and gone was the hesitation. In her place stood someone else entirely. Someone colder, sharper and stronger. The elevator doors opened and a man in a tailored suit was already waiting.

"Ms. Carter," he said, inclining his head respectfully. "The board has been waiting for your return." Elena stepped forward.

"Have they?" she replied calmly.

"Yes," he said. "They refused to make any final decisions without you."

A faint smile touched her lips. "Good." She walked past him, her steps steady and controlled.

"Schedule a meeting first thing in the morning," she continued. "It's time we reviewed all pending contracts."

"Of course, ma'am." He hesitated slightly before adding-"Should we inform Mr. Adrian Carter?"

Elena stopped and slowly, she turned. For the first time since leaving the house-Her eyes hardened.

"No," she said. Her voice was quiet but final. "Not yet."

The man nodded immediately. "Understood."

Elena continued walking. Straight into a large office at the end of the hallway. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the entire city. Power. Control. Everything she had quietly built-Hidden behind a life no one questioned. She placed her bag gently on the desk and walked toward the window. Her reflection stared back at her once again. But this time-There was no trace of weakness, only calculation and intent.

"Let's see how long you keep that confidence, Adrian," she murmured softly. Her phone buzzed in her hand. A message flashed across the screen:

"All assets secured. Transfer ready upon your confirmation."

Elena's smile deepened. Because the truth was that, the house Adrian stood in, the company he proudly ran, the life he thought was his, had never truly belonged to him. And soon, he was going to find out the hard way.

That the woman he replaced, was the one who owned everything.
