The lobby of the Apex Solutions building was all glass and polished marble. It smelled like fresh coffee and money. Helena stood near the elevator, clutching her resume in a folder, trying to calm the butterflies in her stomach.
She was fifteen minutes early. She wanted to make a good impression. She needed this job.
The interview was with Cynthia Vance, the Finance Director. Cynthia was a sharp woman in her fifties, with a no-nonsense attitude and a keen eye. She asked tough questions about Helena's experience, her knowledge of auditing software, and her ability to handle high-pressure situations.
Helena answered them all. She spoke clearly, referencing the skills she had honed before her life had fallen apart. She didn't mention the last four years of waitressing and odd jobs. She focused on her competence, her efficiency, and her willingness to work harder than anyone else.
Cynthia listened, taking notes. At the end of the interview, she looked up, a small smile playing on her lips. "You're exactly what we need, Helena. I'll have HR send over the offer by the end of the week."
Helena walked out of the building feeling like she was floating. She had done it. She had actually done it.
Three days later, the offer letter arrived in her inbox. The salary was more than she had dared to hope for. The health insurance was comprehensive, covering dental and vision. It was a lifeline.
She, Briana, and Leo celebrated that night with a large pepperoni pizza. Leo ate three slices and got sauce all over his face, while Helena and Briana clinked cheap wine glasses.
"To Apex Solutions," Briana said, grinning. "And to Helena Ayers, the newest financial assistant in the city."
"To new beginnings," Helena said, her heart full.
The high lasted exactly until her first day of work.
She arrived at Apex Solutions at 8:00 AM sharp, wearing a new-well, new-to-her-blazer she had found at a thrift store. She was escorted to the HR department, where a cheerful woman named Pamela Riggs handed her a stack of paperwork.
"Standard stuff," Pamela said, waving a hand. "Just sign at the bottom of each page."
Helena nodded, reading through the non-disclosure agreements and tax forms. She picked up the main employment contract, her pen hovering over the signature line.
Then she saw the header.
The logo wasn't the Apex Solutions triangle she had seen on the website. It was a sleek, stylized 'N' with a lightning bolt. And the name printed above it wasn't Apex Solutions.
It was Nexus Dynamics.
Helena's hand froze. The pen slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the desk.
Pamela looked up, startled. "Is everything okay, dear?"
Helena stared at the paper, her vision tunneling. "What... what is this?" she whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the logo. "This says Nexus Dynamics."
Pamela smiled, completely oblivious to the panic seizing Helena's chest. "Oh, didn't you hear? It's very recent news. The ink on the deal just dried last week, and the internal transition memo just went out yesterday. We were acquired. Nexus Dynamics bought us out. You're officially a Nexus employee now! Congratulations, it's a fantastic opportunity."
The room tilted. Helena gripped the edge of the desk, her knuckles white. Nexus Dynamics. Keven's company. The place she had spent four years trying to escape was now her employer.
She couldn't breathe. She had to get out. She had to run.
But then she thought of Leo. She thought of the rent she owed Briana. She thought of the medical check-up Leo was overdue for. She thought of the loan payment that would auto-draft from her account in two weeks.
She couldn't run. She was trapped.
"Helena?" Pamela asked, looking concerned. "Do you need some water?"
"No," Helena said, her voice sounding alien to her own ears. "I'm fine."
She picked up the pen. She signed her name on the dotted line, each stroke feeling like a link in a chain tightening around her ankle.
She was escorted to the finance department, a sprawling open-plan office filled with cubicles. A man with a friendly face and a coffee mug approached her.
"Hey, you must be the new girl! I'm Mark Jennings," he said, extending a hand. "Welcome to the madhouse."
Helena shook his hand, forcing a polite smile. "Helena. Nice to meet you."
She sat down at her desk, the ergonomic chair feeling like an electric chair. She stared at the blank monitor, her mind racing.
Just then, a chime echoed through the office. It was the company-wide email notification. Every computer in the room pinged simultaneously.
Helena looked at her screen. The email was marked "URGENT."
Subject: Notice of CEO Visit – Keven Armstrong
Her heart stopped.
The email informed all employees that Mr. Armstrong would be visiting the Apex office today at 3:00 PM to address the staff regarding the merger.
Helena looked at the clock. It was 1:30 PM. She had ninety minutes before she would be in the same room as the man who despised her. The man who held her livelihood in his hands.
She was no longer just an employee. She was a target.
