Chapter 2 The Offer She Couldn't Refuse

Eliza hadn't slept more than two hours. Her apartment, which had once felt like a safe place to be, now felt like a trap. Every time the walls creaked or a shadow moved in the hallway, her heart skipped a beat. She kept thinking about what happened last night: the chase, the strange men, and Alexander Hale. Just hearing the name still made her stomach turn.

There was a sleek black car waiting outside when she opened the curtains that morning. Alexander stood next to it, perfectly dressed, with his back straight and his eyes scanning the street. She felt both afraid and unwillingly trusting when she saw him.

"You have to come with me," he said, his voice calm but firm.

Eliza's first thought was to say no. Her body wanted to run away. But she knew she couldn't after what happened the night before. Not if she wanted to live.

"Where?" she asked, her voice shaking. "Who are you to me?"

He opened the door and didn't say anything right away, which was a silent order to come in. "Somewhere safe." "You'll understand soon," he said.

The car moved quietly through the city streets. The quiet was almost too much to take, except for the soft hum of the engine. Eliza looked out the window at the wet pavement, which was reflecting the early morning light. She wanted to talk, but the words wouldn't come. She couldn't get rid of the nagging feeling that danger was still close.

At last, she spoke up. "Why me?" "Why now?"

Alexander's jaw tightened, and he looked straight ahead. "Because you saw something years ago. " Something that someone doesn't want to come out with. "Someone has found you."

Her throat got dry. "Found me?" "How?"

"You don't have to know everything right now." You have to believe me. "Full honesty comes later." He looked into her eyes for a moment, cutting through the doubt. "Eliza, you're in danger." "I can keep you safe, but only if you help."

Her thoughts were racing. She had lived for years believing that the past couldn't touch her. She had moved to a new city, changed her name, and stayed out of the spotlight. But there he was. He knew Alexander Hale. He had found her.

The car stopped at a private estate that looked like it was out of reach of the outside world. There were security cameras all over the gates, and tall walls surrounded well-kept gardens. The mansion was impressive, with a mix of modern style and old-world luxury.

"This is only for a little while," Alexander said as he led her inside. "You'll stay here while we figure out what's next." "You're safe here... for now."

Eliza looked around the room: marble floors, simple furniture, and walls lined with books and small pieces of art. She felt small in the grand scheme of things, but a thread of relief ran through her fear. She felt a little safe for the first time in years.

Days went by, each one full of careful routines. Alexander kept his distance but kept an eye on her at all times. He didn't say much, but he had a strong and heavy presence. Eliza couldn't help but notice the small things about him, like the way he moved with precision and the quiet authority in his steps. Each room he entered seemed to bend to his will.

Eliza found a note tucked into one of the books she had taken off the shelf while she was reading in the study one night. It was small, neatly folded, and scary:

We know where you are.

Her heart raced. She shook her hands as she held the paper. The note didn't seem like a big deal, but the threat behind it was clear.

Alexander came to the door almost right away. He looked at the note and said, "They found you."

"What do we do?" she asked, her panic rising again.

"We get ready," he said. "And we don't make mistakes." You have to tell me everything you know.

"Right now."

Eliza shook her head. "I can't." Not yet.

He didn't push. He just nodded, his jaw tightening and a storm behind his eyes. He said, "Hiding will only make it worse," in a calm voice.

They lived under stressful routines for days. Checks for surveillance, security sweeps, and movements that are carefully timed. Eliza slowly got used to the mansion's rhythms, Alexander's habits, and the house's unspoken rules. She knew that living under his watchful eye was tiring, but it was safer than it had ever been. Every knock and shadow made her heart race, but she felt less alone.

Then Alexander made an offer that was hard to believe. He sat across from her in the study, his face unreadable, and slid a piece of paper toward her:

"You will marry me." For a short time. In a legal way. Just to keep you and me safe. A deal. "That's all for now."

Eliza's mind went blank. Are you married? With a man she didn't know well, a man she was afraid of, a man who could kill her with a word?

She whispered, "You're crazy." Fear fought with something deeper: a strange sense of relief. Because for the first time in years, someone showed her a way to safety, a way to get away from the shadows that had been following her.

Alexander's lips turned up a little, which was enough to make her uneasy. "Maybe. "But it works.

She looked at him very closely. Cold, commanding, and completely sure of themselves. But in his eyes, she saw something else: loyalty, protectiveness, and maybe even understanding.

Eliza's heart hurt. For years, she had stayed away from attachment. It was risky to trust. But the idea of living in this mansion with him, away from the shadows that haunted her, gave her a glimmer of hope.

That night, she went over everything by herself in her room. The chase, the car ride, the mansion, and the deal. The past was still there. It had found her. And now it had tied her future to Alexander Hale.

She shivered from the weight of it all. Her chest was full of fear, relief, uncertainty, and a strange desire to know more. The danger somehow felt like it could be handled. She felt alive in some way.

And as the city lights outside the window blurred, she realized something very scary: she might have to trust Alexander Hale to stay alive.
