I looked at him with an obviously confused expression. But swallowed whatever was about to leave my mouth.
"Thank you sir." I said and stood up.
"Mr McKenzie." I heard Quin's voice
I turned to look at him.
"Call me Mr McKenzie."
"Oh. Yes, Mr Mackenzie." I repeated after him. And with that I was out of his office.
Outside the office, I nodded briefly at the secretary and gave a small smile as I walked straight to the elevator.
The moment the elevator door closed, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
Everything about this new job was giving me mixed feelings. I took a cab back to my apartment. Something else kept bothering me .
Did he forget all about me?
I meant the me he bullied in school. Of course he would. I was nothing but a play thing that satisfied his veil pride and ego.
I needed to call Cassie.
But another call came in instead.
"MOM"
This woman is after my happiness. I hate her for it but she's my mother.
I picked up and put the phone on speaker.
"I know you weren't planning on picking up my call. After all I've done for you."
She's the worst kind of mother anybody could ever ask for. A mother who pleases her boyfriends by letting them have their way with her son.
"What do you want from me now?" My voice sounded obviously irritated. Because I was irritated by her.
"I'm at the police station, I need you to come bail me."
I sighed, "What did you do this time?"
"That is no way to talk to your mother, you ungrateful fruit of my womb."
"Fine if you won't tell me, then call your boyfriends to come bail you."
I was about to end the call when she said it.
"I couldn't pay for my drink." She was so shameless. Why would a mother be that shameless?
"Fine , I'm on my way."
I ended the call.
I put on something comfy and headed to the station. When I got there I spotted my mom talking and laughing with some guy in the stall. She looked comfortable.
Why are they even in the same category?
I thought male and female are separated.
I quickly went to the desk where I made payment and bailed my mother.
"I'm here for Jessica Davis." I told the cop at the desk.
"Sign here." He pointed to a piece of paper, handing me a pen,"And here."
After signing I told the cop to delay her bail by an hour so I'll be home when she leaves the station.
By the time I got home I was tired , I made noodles and called the one person who wasn't asking for anything except for me to trust in them.
Cassie.
She picked up immediately.
"Hey sugar, What's up?"
"I've got happy news and sad news." I muttered.
"Hit me with the happy news first." She said,
"Ok. I got a job."
"Fuck yeah! And?"
"My boss is Quin." It sounded like a whisper.
"You're fucked man." The joy in her voice disappeared immediately.
"Yeah, I'm fucked." I muttered.
"Cheers up sugar, he doesn't know y'all tied the knot so you're safe" the cheer was back in her voice.
"Yeah." I said grimly
"My boss is calling, let's meet up tomorrow, okay?"
"Yeah."
And the line went dead silent.
Cassie and I hardly meet up. She's usually too busy and honestly, I think there's something going on between her and her boss.
I spent the rest of the evening going through the internet searching for everything I could find on Quin McKenzie. Before sleep consumed me.
Two days later I received another mail from Quin's secretary to resume work the following week.
A notification popped up, something about Quin and I couldn't resist.
I looked at the picture attached and read the headlines slowly with shaky hands. My heart beat spiked. Because I couldn't believe what I was reading.
