Chapter 5 No Turning Back

"I'm Isabella!"

Daniel's voice cut through the morning air like a blade.

She had just stepped out of Alexander's black Bentley when Daniel grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

The flash of cameras from across the street flickered like lightning. Reporters. Investors. Employees walking into Laurent Global's glass tower.

Daniel's eyes were bloodshot.

"You think I wouldn't see this?" he hissed. "Leaving his car at dawn? Have you lost your mind?"

Isabella slowly turned toward him.

For a moment, she saw the man she once loved. The man she believed in. The man she sacrificed everything for.

But all she felt now was exhaustion.

"Let go of me."

His grip tightened.

"You're embarrassing yourself," Daniel snapped. "Or is this your revenge? Sleeping with a billionaire to make me jealous?"

The word "sleeping" burned.

Humiliation surged up her spine, but she didn't let it show.

Inside, though

He cheated.

He humiliated you.

He replaced you.

And now he dares to question you?

She pulled her hand free.

"You don't get to interrogate me anymore," she said quietly.

Daniel laughed coldly. "You think Laurent will keep you? You're just a rebound. A toy."

A toy.

The word echoed in her chest.

Is that what she was becoming?

Is that what this contract meant?

Her fingers curled at her sides.

No.

I am not anyone's toy.

Behind her, the Bentley door shut.

Alexander stepped forward.

Calm.

Impeccable.

Untouchable.

His presence alone shifted the air.

Daniel stiffened.

"What is this?" Daniel demanded. "Are you trying to buy my ex-wife, too?"

Alexander's gaze flicked to Isabella briefly before returning to Daniel.

"She isn't property to be bought."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Daniel scoffed. "Then what is she to you?"

Silence.

And then Alexander did something unexpected.

He reached for Isabella's hand.

Not possessive.

Not aggressive.

Deliberate.

Warm.

"Isabella," Alexander said evenly, eyes never leaving Daniel, "do you wish to answer him?"

It was a choice.

Not an order.

Her heartbeat thundered.

This was the moment.

She could step back.

She could retreat.

She could let this spiral into gossip and speculation.

Or she could stop running.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Don't be stupid, Bella. Whatever this is, it's temporary. Come home. We'll talk. I can fix this."

Fix.

As if betrayal were a broken appliance.

Her throat tightened.

Last night, she had cried alone in a bathroom stall after signing divorce papers.

And now he said, "Come home."

She felt something shift inside her.

Not anger.

Not grief.

Resolve.

"There's nothing to fix," she said softly.

Daniel's jaw clenched. "You're making a mistake."

"No," she replied. "I already made that mistake three years ago."

The words landed like a slap.

Gasps rippled from nearby onlookers.

Daniel's face darkened.

Alexander's thumb brushed lightly over her knuckles.

A silent question.

Are you ready?

She inhaled.

Yes.

The lobby of Laurent Global was marble and glass.

Cold.

Imposing.

Powerful.

Isabella felt dozens of eyes on her as they walked in together.

Employees whispered.

Phones were discreetly lifted.

Daniel followed them inside despite security's hesitation.

"This isn't over," he muttered.

Alexander stopped walking.

He turned slowly.

"You no longer have the right to follow her."

Daniel smirked. "She's still legally my wife."

The words hit like ice water.

Isabella froze.

Was she?

Her divorce papers were signed but not yet finalized.

The legal gap.

The vulnerability.

Daniel saw her hesitation.

"See?" he pressed. "You don't even know what you're getting into. Laurent doesn't care about you. He cares about his inheritance."

The word "inheritance" made her stomach twist.

He knew.

Or guessed.

Alexander's expression didn't change.

"You're correct," he said calmly. "I care about legacy."

Daniel laughed triumphantly.

But Alexander wasn't finished.

"And Isabella is now part of that legacy."

The air shifted.

Daniel's smile faded.

"What are you implying?"

Alexander finally looked at Isabella.

No coldness.

No calculation.

Just steady intent.

"I'm giving you a choice," he said quietly. "Walk away with him... and we annul this marriage quietly."

Her pulse skipped.

Annul.

Freedom.

Safety.

Normalcy.

"Or," he continued, "stand beside me publicly. As my wife."

The word "wife" echoed.

Daniel stared at her.

"Don't do this," he warned. "You think this is revenge? You'll regret it."

Regret.

Would she?

What did she fear more?

Staying small?

Or stepping into fire?

She thought of Sophia.

Of the smug smile.

The fake pregnancy.

The way Daniel looked at her now was not with love, but possession.

He didn't want her back.

He just didn't want to lose.

Jealousy flashed in his eyes.

And suddenly-

She understood.

He can't stand that I'm wanted.

The realization felt like oxygen.

She wasn't unwanted.

She was underestimated.

And she was done being invisible.

She stepped closer to Alexander.

Slid her hand fully into his.

"I'll stand beside you."

The lobby fell silent.

Daniel's face drained of color.

"You're doing this for money?" he spat.

She looked at him steadily.

"I'm doing this because I refuse to beg for scraps."

His pride cracked visibly.

"You think he'll love you?" Daniel's voice broke slightly. "You think this is real?"

The question pierced deeper than she expected.

Love.

Did she believe in it anymore?

She glanced at Alexander.

His expression was unreadable.

But his grip tightened, not forcefully.

Reassuring.

"I don't need promises," she said.

Daniel laughed bitterly. "You'll come crawling back."

She tilted her chin.

"No. I won't."

The elevator doors closed.

For the first time, it was just the two of them.

Silence.

Then-

"Are you certain?" Alexander asked.

No mockery.

No pressure.

Just a genuine inquiry.

She met his gaze.

"Are you?"

A faint flicker crossed his eyes.

"I never make public moves without calculation."

"That's not what I asked."

A pause.

Then something shifted.

"You won't be humiliated again," he said quietly.

The promise felt heavier than romance.

Protection.

Power.

Security.

But something inside her whispered-

And what about your heart?

The elevator opened to a private floor.

Marcus Reed was waiting.

"There's a situation," he said.

Alexander nodded once. "Proceed."

Marcus handed him a tablet.

Headlines flashed.

"Tech Founder's Ex-Wife Spotted with Billionaire CEO."

"Scandal Brewing Between Hart and Laurent."

And then-

Another headline.

"Sophia Kane Claims Pregnancy Complications Amid Divorce Drama."

Isabella's breath caught.

Complications?

Alexander's eyes darkened.

"It's gaining traction fast," Marcus said. "Investors are watching."

Daniel was using this.

Sophia was weaponizing it.

A pregnant mistress versus a "gold-digging" ex-wife.

Public sympathy was obvious.

Humiliation threatened to resurface.

Alexander turned to her.

"If we don't control this narrative now, you'll be dragged through the media."

Dragged.

Shamed.

Reduced to a headline.

She felt her stomach twist again.

Not just from stress.

From something deeper.

What if...

The thought came suddenly.

Unwelcome.

What if I'm pregnant too?

Her fingers subconsciously brushed her abdomen.

Alexander noticed.

"Isabella?"

She forced her hand down.

"Let's control the narrative," she said.

Marcus blinked. "You're suggesting-?"

Alexander's jaw set.

"Yes."

He looked at Isabella one last time.

"Once we do this, there's no turning back."

Her heart pounded.

No turning back.

Isn't that what I need?

"I'm tired of being on the defensive," she said. "Let them see."

Alexander's gaze sharpened.

"Very well."

He turned to Marcus.

"Prepare a press conference immediately."

Marcus's brows lifted slightly.

"Today?"

"Now."

The conference hall filled in under thirty minutes.

Reporters.

Cameras.

Speculation buzzing like static.

Isabella stood beside Alexander behind the podium.

Her palms were damp.

This wasn't revenge anymore.

This was a transformation.

Daniel pushed through the crowd at the back.

His face was pale.

Sophia wasn't there.

Interesting.

Alexander leaned slightly toward her.

"Last chance."

She exhaled slowly.

"No."

The microphones turned on.

Flashbulbs exploded.

Alexander's voice cut through the noise.

"There have been rumors circulating this morning regarding my personal life."

Murmurs.

He reached for her hand again.

Publicly.

Intentionally.

Daniel's eyes widened.

Alexander continued.

"I believe in clarity."

Isabella felt her pulse in her throat.

This is it.

Alexander looked straight into the camera.

Then he said-

"Allow me to formally introduce my wife... Isabella Laurent."

The room erupted.

Gasps.

Shouts.

Questions.

Wife.

Laurent.

Her world tilted.

Daniel stumbled back like he'd been struck.

And in the chaos-

Isabella felt it.

Not fear.

Not regret.

Power.

But as cameras flashed and reporters screamed-

Her phone vibrated in her clutch.

A message from an unknown number.

Three words.

We need to talk.

Followed by a photo attachment.

Her breath froze.

It was a medical report.

With her name on it.

And two faint lines circled in red.
