Chapter 4 The past comes back

The message reads"You think you know everything, isabella .But some truths are hidden in plain sight. Watch your back.Dont think you can be better than us."

Her fingers trembled as she read it. The message was unsigned, but she knew who it was from. Janet. Always Janet. Always watching, always plotting.

Isabella's eyes burned with determination. She folded her laptop closed, her mind racing. Revenge was no longer just an idea. It was a plan, a necessity. She would reclaim her father's legacy, dismantle Lydia and Janet's schemes, and make them pay.

Yet even as she prepared for the battles ahead, a part of her could not ignore the unease. Someone had sent her the initial files. Someone had risked exposure to tell her the truth. And she could not be sure... could not be certain whether this ally was trustworthy, or if it was yet another layer of deception, another trap.

Her phone buzzed. A notification from Fredrick.

"I think someone's been following me. Tonight. Be careful. Don't go anywhere alone."

Isabella froze. The air seemed to thicken, her heart pounding. Janet's games had always been cruel, meticulous, and far-reaching. But now... now it was more personal. More dangerous.

She realized, with a sharp, icy clarity, that she was standing on the edge of something far larger than betrayal, far darker than greed. This was not just about wealth. Not just about love. This was about survival.

And somewhere in the shadows of the city, Janet was already moving. Watching. Planning. Waiting for the right moment to strike.

The game had escalated.

And Isabella knew one truth with absolute certainty: she was no longer a pawn.

But the question that burned in her mind... was whether she was prepared for the storm Janet was about to unleash.

Outside, the night deepened, cloaking the city in darkness. Somewhere, a figure stepped lightly across the terrace of her building. A figure with eyes sharp, calculating, and cruel.

And as Isabella sat, unaware of the danger so close, a single thought crystallized in her mind:

This war had only just begun.

The morning sun filtered through the tall windows of the Laurent penthouse, but no warmth reached the room where Lydia paced, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. She stopped abruptly in front of her mother, Janet, and let out a sharp breath.

"Mother, I cannot take this anymore," Lydia said, her voice trembling with frustration. "Ever since James found out about Isabella and Fredrick, he has been acting strangely. He avoids me. He barely speaks. What am I supposed to do?"

Janet leaned back in her chair, her fingers steepled, her eyes cold and calculating.

"Patience, Lydia," she said smoothly. "This is expected. James has been attached to you for so long. He depends on you. But now Isabella has entered the picture. His confusion is natural. That fire in his heart that belongs to you has been challenged. But we can manage this. We always manage."

"Manage?" Lydia repeated, her voice rising. "You call this managing? He barely looks at me. He does not touch me. He ignores me completely, even in front of everyone. I thought I was his world. I thought I mattered."

Janet's lips curled into a small, dark smile. "The problem is not him. The problem is the perception of power. Isabella dares to rise, to be strong, to claim influence. That frightens him, and it frustrates you. That fire you feel... jealousy... it can be useful if you wield it correctly."

Lydia's hands clenched into fists. "Useful? Mother, it burns inside me. I cannot stand seeing him avoid me. I cannot stand seeing her in his thoughts, in his life."

Janet's smile sharpened. "Good. That anger can guide you. You must use it, focus it. Every move must be calculated. Every step measured. Do not act recklessly. Remember, Lydia, Isabella's happiness is temporary. We will show her who truly controls the world around her."

Lydia nodded, a dangerous glint in her eyes. "Yes, Mother. I will make her regret taking what belongs to me."

Meanwhile, across the city, Isabella strode confidently through the lobby of Fredrick's company. The sleek glass panels reflected the golden morning sun, but Isabella barely noticed them. She had spent months building her position, asserting her influence, and proving her intelligence. She was now a managing director, and every decision she made carried weight.

Fredrick appeared at her side, his expression a mixture of admiration and concern.

"You look like you belong here," he said, voice soft but amused.

"I do," Isabella said, straightening her shoulders. "And I intend to make a difference."

Fredrick's brow furrowed. "I know you will. But promise me one thing, Isabella. Do not let anyone manipulate you. Not again. Not like before."

"I will not," she said firmly. "I have learned my lessons."

Fredrick spoke"you have changed me by your excellent attitude.you are so authoritative, kind productive.this have made me learn that woman can be so valuable and should be treated with great respect"

Isabella replied "why did you say that".

Fredrick answered"because after I broke up with my girlfriend,I began to hate woman.I thaught all women are wicked and are of no value until I meet you".

Isabella saw a silent trace of pains from the past on his face as he was talking about his past. She used one of her hand to gently rub his head and said"I love you and I will always do".

Fredrick's gaze lingered on her. "You too.You are now smarter, stronger,Sharper and More productive And I..." He hesitated, as if weighing his words. "I trust you completely."

He used his hands to touch her cheek.

Later that day, Fredrick's phone buzzed. He frowned as he read the message from his father.

"You must marry Veronica. If you do not, consequences will follow. Think carefully. This is not negotiable."

Fredrick ran his hand over his face, his thoughts spinning. His father, Philip, had always been stern, but the tone of this message carried threat. There were references to past business deals, to financial cover-ups, and to favors owed to Veronica's family. Failure to comply, the message implied, could result in criminal investigation or worse.

Philip entered his office without knocking. "Fredrick, this is serious. Veronica's family has assisted us in the past. If you do not marry her, the consequences will be severe. You cannot ignore this."

Fredrick clenched his fists. "Father, you expect me to obey without question?"

Philip's expression hardened. "This is not personal, Fredrick. It is about survival, the family's reputation, and protecting what we have. You are to marry Veronica. That is final."

Fredrick shook his head. "And what of my feelings? What of what is right? Isabella has proven herself, her loyalty, her intelligence. How can I betray her for an old promise and a family obligation?"

Philip's eyes narrowed. "You are reckless. You will ruin everything if you follow your heart. You do not understand the magnitude of what is at stake, our family is owing Veronica's family loyalty because they helped us to cover up some crimes that was done in our company and now they want our favour in return or we will end up in the prison if they expose our crimes."

Fredrick's thoughts were still unsettled when a strange woman from the past opened the door.As they turned to know who was that, the office felt tensed for Fredrick.
