Chapter 1 The Man Who Still Owned My Heart

The first time I saw him again, he was stepping out of a black car like he owned the entire city.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

The world around me blurred - voices, traffic, footsteps, everything dissolving into background noise - because there was only one thing my mind could process.

Him.

After five years.

Five years of silence.

Five years of pretending I had moved on.

Five years of convincing myself that what we had was young, temporary, forgettable.

But my heart betrayed me instantly.

Because the truth was cruel.

I had never stopped loving him.

He looked different now.

Sharper.

Colder.

More dangerous.

The boy I once knew had been replaced by a man carved from ambition and power. His suit fit him like it had been designed around his body. His jaw was harder, his expression unreadable, his presence commanding enough that people instinctively stepped aside as he walked.

And then there were his eyes.

Those same eyes.

Dark. Intense. Devastating.

The same eyes that once looked at me like I was the only girl alive.

My stomach dropped.

He hadn't seen me yet.

I should have left.

Every logical part of my brain screamed at me to turn around, walk away, disappear before he noticed me standing there like a ghost from his past.

Because seeing him again meant reopening wounds I had spent years trying to heal.

Because he was the man who broke my heart.

Because I was the woman he let go.

But my feet refused to move.

Instead, I watched him.

The driver closed the car door behind him. A group of executives rushed forward immediately, greeting him with respect that bordered on reverence.

Of course they did.

He wasn't just successful now.

He was powerful.

Rumors about him had spread everywhere over the years.

Young billionaire.

Tech empire founder.

Ruthless negotiator.

Emotionally untouchable.

Women wanted him.

Men wanted to be him.

And I...

I once knew the version of him that couldn't sleep unless I was on the phone.

My chest tightened painfully.

As if he sensed me thinking about him, his head turned.

Our eyes met.

Time stopped.

Every memory we ever shared crashed into me at once - laughter, arguments, late-night conversations, kisses under streetlights, whispered promises, tears, heartbreak.

His expression froze.

Shock.

Real shock.

For a split second, the powerful billionaire disappeared.

And I saw him.

The boy I loved.

My heart cracked open.

He said my name.

Softly.

Almost like he didn't believe I was real.

And just like that, five years collapsed into nothing.

Because the way he looked at me...

It hadn't changed.

Not even a little.

My pulse pounded in my ears.

I should have spoken.

I should have smiled politely.

I should have acted like a normal adult who had moved on from her past relationship.

Instead, my traitorous heart whispered the only truth that mattered.

You never stopped being his.

His jaw tightened slightly, emotion flickering behind his controlled expression.

Then he started walking toward me.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Each movement deliberate.

Predatory.

My breath caught.

Why was he coming closer?

What was he going to say?

Did he hate me?

Did he regret us?

Did he still-

"Ava."

My name sounded different in his voice now.

Deeper.

Rougher.

But still devastating.

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to meet his eyes.

"Hi."

Brilliant.

Five years apart, and that was the best I could do.

His gaze searched my face like he was trying to memorize every detail.

"You look..." He stopped, exhaling slowly. "...the same."

My chest squeezed.

"You don't," I whispered.

A faint, humorless smile touched his lips.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I know."

Silence stretched between us, thick with everything unsaid.

Questions.

Regret.

History.

Pain.

And something far more dangerous.

Unfinished love.

Then he asked the question I never expected.

"Do you ever think about that day?"

My heart stumbled.

"What day?"

His eyes darkened slightly.

"The day we met."

And just like that...

My mind was pulled backward in time.

Back to rain.

Back to chaos.

Back to the moment everything started.

Back to the day I met the boy who would one day become the man who never truly let me go.

Five Years Earlier

Rain wasn't in the forecast.

That was the first problem.

The second problem was that I was trapped in the middle of a university picnic with no umbrella, no shelter, and absolutely no plan.

Students were screaming and running in every direction as the sky opened without warning, dumping heavy sheets of water onto the campus field.

Within seconds, everyone was soaked.

Including me.

I laughed helplessly, trying to shield my face with my hands as I ran toward the nearest tent.

And that was when I crashed into someone.

Strong hands caught my arms before I could fall.

"Whoa - careful."

His voice.

Deep.

Warm.

Male.

My head snapped up.

And that was the moment everything changed.

Because the boy standing in front of me...

Was the most beautiful man I had ever seen.

Our eyes locked.

Something invisible passed between us.

A strange, electric recognition.

Like two souls meeting for the first time...

And somehow already knowing each other.

Neither of us spoke.

Rain poured around us.

Time slowed.

And for reasons I couldn't explain...

My heart started racing like I had just found something I didn't even realize I'd been searching for.
