"You are in this room," he replied. "Act like you want to leave it alive."
"Alive?" I shot him a look. "You're dramatic."
He didn't glance at me. "You're new."
A woman with a sleek bob stepped forward. "Mr. Hale, Mrs. Hale, just one more from the side."
The word scraped. I didn't correct her. I didn't have the energy.
Callum's hand came to the small of my back. Not possessive. Not gentle. Just placed there, like a signature. My body reacted anyway and I hated it because it was involuntary and he would never know and somehow that made it worse.
"Don't flinch," he said under his breath. "They'll notice."
"They're already noticing," I replied.
"That's the point."
The flashes stopped. A murmur moved through the room. Phones went up. Someone laughed too loudly near the back. Someone else said my name like it was fresh gossip they were still tasting.
The woman with the bob smiled. "Perfect. Thank you."
Callum stepped away the second the cameras lowered. Clean. Immediate. Like proximity had an expiry date and his had just run out.
"Car," he said.
We moved through a corridor of eyes. I kept mine forward. Outside the night air was cold and real. The car door opened. I got in. He followed. The door shut and took the noise with it.
Neither of us spoke for a while.
"You could've warned me, " I said.
"I did," he replied. "You chose to underestimate the spectacle."
"I chose not to be paraded."
"You chose to sign."
I looked out the window. The city moved past in long streaks of light. "So what now? Do I get a handbook for pretending to be married to you?"
"Yes," he said. "Rules."
I turned. "You're joking."
"I don't joke about containment."
"Containment," I repeated. "Is that what I am to you?"
"You're a variable," he said. "Variables need structure."
The car turned. The road got quieter. I didn't recognize the neighborhood.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"My residence."
"You said housing was optional."
"For employees," he replied. "Not for risks."
"I'm not moving in with you."
"You already did," he said. "Legally."
My throat tightened. "You don't get to control where I sleep."
"I get to control exposure," he replied. "And right now you're exposed."
"That's not your call."
"It is while the takeover stands," he said. "You want freedom? Help me end it."
"And if I don't?"
He looked at me. "Then we both live with what comes next."
The car slowed. A gate slid open. The driveway curved into shadow and the house at the end of it was all clean lines and stacked windows, lit from inside like it had been waiting.
"No," I said.
"Yes," he replied.
The car stopped.
I didn't move.
"Aria." He said my name like a decision. "We do this cleanly or we do it loud. Which do you prefer?"
I laughed once. Hollow. "You really think rules can contain me."
"I don't need to contain you," he said. "I need to predict you."
"That's worse."
The driver opened my door.
Callum's hand hovered near mine for half a second. Not touching. Just close enough that I felt the air between us. Then he pulled back and stepped out on his side like it hadn't happened at all.
"Welcome home," he said.
I stepped out because staying in felt like losing.
The house was worse up close. Not ugly, the opposite of ugly, which is its own kind of problem. The kind of place that makes you feel like you've already done something wrong just
standing in front of it.
Inside was high ceilings and low lighting and the kind of quiet that doesn't happen by accident. Nothing on the walls felt chosen for warmth. No shoes by the door. No jacket thrown over a chair. No proof that whoever lived here ever just came home and stopped.
"How many rooms?" I asked.
"Enough," he said.
"That's not an answer."
"It's the one you're getting tonight."
He moved toward a staircase on the left. I didn't follow.
"The rules," I said. "You mentioned them in the car."
He stopped. Turned. He was still in his dinner jacket, hands loose at his sides, and he looked at me the way someone looks at a problem they've already solved and are mildly annoyed to be revisiting.
"Now you want to hear them," he said.
"Now I'm inside the building."
He walked into a room off the main hall. I followed. Two chairs. A low table. A view of the city that probably cost more than everything I'd owned in my entire life laid end to end.
He stood near the window. Didn't sit. Arms at his sides, jacket still buttoned, like even in his own home he didn't fully arrive.
"Rule one," he said. "In public we are married. No contradicting me, no visible contempt, no body language that gives anyone something to write about."
"What counts as visible contempt?"
"What you were doing with your face at the photo session."
"I was smiling."
"You were doing something," he said. "It wasn't smiling."
I let it go. "What else."
"No discussing the arrangement. Not with friends. Not with anyone who asks how this happened."
"My mother is going to ask."
"Then figure out what to tell her."
"She's sick." I said it flat. Not looking for sympathy, just putting it in the room where it belonged. "She's been sick for two years. She reads me. She'll know something is off and she won't stop until she understands what."
He was still. One full beat of stillness that felt different from his regular stillness.
Then he moved on.
I let him. The thing about my mother didn't need his acknowledgment to be true. It sat in the room whether he looked at it or not and we both knew it.
"You'll have the east wing," he said. "I have the rest. We don't cross into each other's space unless an appearance requires it."
"My rules," I said.
He went quiet. "Sorry?"
"You have rules. I have rules. If you want real cooperation and not just technical compliance, that's how this works."
He looked at me. Jaw tight. Said nothing for a moment. Then, "Go ahead."
"Forty-eight hours notice for any appearance. Not the morning of. Not an hour before."
"That's not always possible."
"Then I'm not always available."
He shifted his weight slightly. Almost nothing. "Fine. Forty-eight hours when the schedule allows."
"When the schedule allows is a loophole."
"It's a reality."
"Then it's my reality too," I said. "When it allows, I show up. When it doesn't, we negotiate."
A pause. "Agreed."
"Second. My phone, my email, my personal life, none of that is yours. I don't care what the NDA covers."
"I have no interest in your personal life."
"Good. Then it costs you nothing to say yes."
"Yes," he said.
"Third. If something is about to happen that involves me, I hear it from you first. Not from Grant. Not from a woman with a clipboard. You."
He stood at the window with his back half-turned, looking at the city. His shoulders were straight. His hands were in his pockets now. He hadn't moved toward me once since we walked into this room and I noticed that, the way you notice the shape of something before you understand what it is.
"That's reasonable," he said.
Full stop. No qualification. Just that.
I waited for the but. It didn't come.
"Thank you," I said.
He didn't respond. Just stood there, hands in his pockets, looking at the city like my gratitude was a thing he didn't have a place to put.
"Board dinner Thursday," he said after a moment. "Black tie."
"You're telling me now."
"That's more than forty-eight hours."
"It is," I said. "Thank you."
Same words. He reacted the same way, which was no visible reaction at all, except that his jaw moved once like he was deciding something privately that had nothing to do with the dinner.
"Someone will send details tomorrow," he said. "Dress, time, who'll be there."
"I have my own clothes."
"You'll have appropriate ones."
"My clothes are appropriate."
"For Thursday," he said, "appropriate means something specific."
I let it go. I was tired and I'd won three things and I knew when to stop.
He walked out without saying goodnight.
The east wing was at the end of a long hallway that felt longer in the quiet. The housekeeper showed me the door, opened it, nodded, and left. I appreciated that. No small talk. No performance.
The room was enormous. Cream walls. A bed I could disappear in. Real art, not prints.
My shoulders were still tight from the car. From the photo session. From the entire day sitting in my body like something I hadn't been able to put down yet. I sat on the edge of the bed and didn't move for a minute. Just sat there. Letting the quiet be quiet.
On the nightstand was a folder.
Printed. Tabbed. My name on the front.
Aria Hale - Arrangement Protocol.
I opened it because not reading things was what got me here.
Twelve pages. Rules for events. Rules for media contact. A pre-written answer for how we met, three lines, already scripted, ending with: when you know, you know.
I stopped on that line.
He had approved those words. This man who called me a variable, a risk, a signatory, had signed off on when you know, you know.
I didn't know what to do with that so I kept reading.
Last page. Handwritten note at the bottom. Sharp, controlled letters that looked exactly like his voice sounded.
The arrangement ends when the board is satisfied. Not before. If you find yourself wanting out early, reread clause twelve. Then read it again.

I almost closed it.
Then I saw the subsection beneath his initials. Smaller print. Added below everything else like an afterthought that wasn't really an afterthought.
Subsection G: In the event that either party develops a conflict of personal interest, full disclosure to the other party is required within 48 hours.
I read it twice.
Conflict of personal interest.
In a marriage contract that phrase meant one thing. It had always only ever meant one thing.
He'd written a clause for feelings.
Not as a joke. Not as a legal formality. As a rule, because rules only exist for things you've genuinely thought might happen.
I closed the folder and put it face down on the nightstand and lay back and stared at the ceiling and thought about a man who didn't do warmth, didn't do nicely, didn't do proximity, who had quietly, privately, made room in the contract just in case.
My mother always said you can tell everything about a person by what they prepare for.
I turned the light off.
The room was dark and still and I was almost asleep when I heard his voice through the wall.
Low. Moving, pacing maybe. A phone call. I caught it in pieces the way you catch sound from another apartment, just fragments and tone until one sentence came through completely clean.
"She's not going to find out. Not before Thursday. Make sure of it."
I opened my eyes.
Lay completely still.
He was talking about me. I couldn't explain how I knew. I just did, the way you know when a room changes before you can name what changed.
He was keeping something from me.
And Thursday was in two days.
