Chapter 3 : The escape and the attack
It should have occured to me long ago to do this. I had nothing to lose, nothing to hold me back. And I had no mate to hope on now that mine had rejected me.
A couple of hours into the start of the new day and I was outside, holding unto a small bag containing the few possessions I owned, slung over my shoulders as I made sure to stick to the shadows of the Alpha's mansion, crawling stealthily away.
The glow of the moon was bright as it was a full moon. The night was chilly and eerily silent as though invisible ghosts watched my escape mission with bated breaths, cheering me on silently to be victorious. This was a silly thought but it strengthened me.
Once I got to the main road, I looked back at the looming mansion now a reasonable distance away from me. Every light remained switched off, and there was no commotion or loud voices coming from it. I hadn't been noticed. Yet.
I should be on my feet, running away as fast I could, but I stood still, hesitating. Moving on was a huge step to take. I would forever leave behind the love I had hoped on and the familiarity of my pack, for an unknown future that looked so bleak.
Breathing deeply, I took a firm step forward. And another. My mind was made up. With each step, I could sense my freedom already, and hopes of a new stress free life bloomed in my heart.
There was no taxi out to transport me at this time so I picked up my pace, running silently through the night, past familiar houses of pack members, past sites that held beautiful memories of my childhood with my dad. I left them all behind.
And at last, the boundary of our pack territory was in sight. The narrow pathway I was trekking through extended across the boundary and deep into the woods. If I could only get through the woods safely, then I would be in a completely new environment, free from the bondage of Moon City pack.
I was tiring out already but I trudged on.
The woods was filled with the shrieking and croaking of all sorts of woodland creatures, nothing that was so scary to me. The trees overhead formed a thick canopy that blocked the moonlight overhead so it was quite dark but I could make out my way, being the werewolf that I was.
Suddenly, instincts kicked in and I could sense I was being followed – or pursued. The hairs on the back of my arm rose in alarm, as I took off running again, wishing so badly that I could turn at will. It was still a long way before I would be safely out of the woods.
I was not fast enough and I could hear my pursuer hot on my heels, closing in on me. Whomever they were, were in their wolf form and were rapidly closing the distance. Panicked swelled in my throat as I tried to go even faster, stumbling and picking myself up from the ground.
Who was after me? It hit me that it could be a rogue werewolf coming for me, the kind that prowled the woods for easy preys to subject to slavery and whatnot.
Slavery! I had just escaped it and there was no way I would go back. I would rather die. I prayed to the moon goddess silently. I could sense the werewolf just a few paces beside me.
Instinctively, I jumped to the side, barely escaping the huge paw that had come swiping at me, and turned to face my attacker. The wolf was swinging at me again and there was no time to avoid it this time as I closed my eyes, preparing for the slash which never came.
Instead I heard a loud wolfish cry, and a sound like a large boulder slamming into a wall. I opened my eyes, and beheld not one wolf, but two wolves, fighting fiercely and clawing at each other. I watched open-mouthed in awe as they snarled loudly, aiming for the neck of their opponent.
It was soon clear that the werewolf which had been coming at me was no match for the newcomer and immediately it took to its heels, howling into the night.
I stepped back in alarm once the other werewolf who had saved me suddenly turned to face me. But its eyes were kind, with a soft golden glow and I knew whomever it was, wasn't going to harm me. I didn't shrink away when the wolf came to stand beside me.
It, no he – it was a he-wolf, likely didn't want to shift and risk appearing stark naked. I could, however, understand that he intended to stay by my side for the rest of the journey. We went on forward together, and there was no hitch for the rest of the time onwards. The sun was only just beginning to rise.
Once outside the woods, it was a whole new world for me. My saviour took me into his home. His name was Kai. He was good looking with golden brown eyes similar to my honey brown ones, and a mane of chocolate brown hair framed around his round face. He was tall and lanky as opposed to Alpha Damian's bulky, well-built and muscular frame. He had a charming smile, where Alpha Damian's was gorgeous.
He did everything to help me settle. Gave me opportunities to discover and actualise my dreams. Made me get rid of the fear-ridded and pathetic old me and step into a bold *ss don't-mess-with-me woman.
He fell in love with me, he had liked me from day one as he later told me, took my child as his own, but he wasn't Alpha Damian, the one who had broken my heart. I found Kai attractive, yes, but try as I might, it could never get past that.
This was the reason why even after living together for more than seven years, we were still yet to get married. He had proposed the idea multiple times, but I was not ready and did not think I would ever be.
Life was perfect at least. I had my son with me. I had a partner that cared. And I fully had my wolf at last.
