Chapter 3 Into the Pack

Chapter 3

Into the Pack

Arielle's legs shook as they left the forest behind, stepping onto the wide, shadowed path that led to the Moon King's territory. The trees grew taller, older, their twisted branches forming a natural archway that seemed to guard the land. The air smelled richer here-earth, pine, and something faintly metallic, like the tang of blood.

The wolves were everywhere. Some padded silently alongside them, others crouched on low branches, their amber eyes tracking her every move. She shivered, not from cold, but from the suffocating awareness that all eyes were on her. She had always been just another wolf in her old pack, low-ranked, unnoticed, invisible. Here... here, everyone could feel the pull of the Moon King. And with him came power. And fear.

"Stay close," he murmured, his voice in her ear, smooth and commanding. He didn't look at her. His silver eyes scanned the territory, measuring, calculating. "Do not speak unless I permit it."

Arielle nodded, swallowing hard. Her heart pounded in her chest as she followed, every instinct screaming that she should run, hide, disappear. And yet... the invisible chain of the bond tugged her forward, unyielding. She couldn't deny it. She didn't want to.

The Moon King stopped at the edge of a clearing. A large stone structure loomed before them-ancient and imposing, carved with runes that pulsed faintly in the moonlight. Wolves circled the perimeter, their low growls like distant thunder. And then, they emerged.

Other members of the pack. The high-ranking wolves, their fur sleek and eyes sharp, approached with cautious respect. Arielle could feel their suspicion like a blade against her skin. They whispered in low tones, glancing at her, measuring her, testing her worth. The Moon King ignored them, but she could feel his gaze-protective, possessive, warning anyone who dared speak out of line.

"Who is she?" one of them asked, a tall wolf with dark gray fur and piercing amber eyes. His tone was cold, challenging.

"She is mine," the Moon King said, voice smooth but lethal. The word "mine" carried the weight of mountains, unyielding, and the pack immediately bowed their heads, though some grudgingly. Arielle's chest tightened at the possessive sound. She should have felt fear, maybe humiliation-but instead, her pulse quickened, a strange thrill weaving through her veins.

"You belong to the Moon King?" the gray wolf asked, eyes narrowing.

"Yes," Arielle heard herself say, voice trembling but clear. Her words felt like chains locking around her, but... part of her didn't resist.

The Moon King stepped closer to her, just enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body, his presence a constant pressure against her. His hand brushed hers briefly, deliberate, possessive. The air between them vibrated with tension. She knew, even now, that he could claim her fully with a touch, a word, or simply his will.

A shadow moved at the edge of the clearing-a young wolf, smaller than the others, with fur the color of midnight. She looked at Arielle with wide, curious eyes. "Are you... really the Moon King's mate?" she asked, voice soft, almost shy.

Arielle nodded, unsure what compelled her to answer. The childlike wolf smiled faintly and disappeared into the shadows. The subtle approval-or at least curiosity-made her feel a little less alone.

The Moon King's hand rested lightly on her shoulder, grounding her. "You will learn our ways," he said. "The pack will test you. Some will respect you. Some will resent you. You must be ready for both."

Arielle swallowed hard, tension knotting her stomach. She had survived the forest, survived the bond awakening, but this-this was a new trial. Eyes watching, whispers behind her back, her very presence challenging the pack's hierarchy... it was a game of survival, and she was a newcomer, marked by the strongest, most feared alpha of them all.

"You must also learn... to trust me," he said softly, his voice brushing her ear. "Even when you do not want to. Even when you fear me. The bond is not just mine. It is ours. And it will protect you-if you allow it."

Arielle's gaze flicked up at him, catching his silver eyes in the moonlight. She wanted to trust him. She wanted to run into his arms, let him claim her fully. But a part of her rebelled, stubborn, screaming that she couldn't-wouldn't-be owned.

And yet... the pull of the bond was undeniable. Her heart raced, her blood hummed, and she realized something terrifying. She was already in his world, in his territory, under his protection. And she was helpless to resist him.

As they moved deeper into the territory, the forest thickening around them like a protective cage, Arielle sensed it: her life had irrevocably changed. The Moon King's eyes never left her, a silent reminder of possession, desire, and power. Every step she took, every breath, every heartbeat, was now tethered to him.

And the wolves watched. Always watching.
