"Did you bring your coat, Josephine?" Tomy rubbed his nose, as throughout the day, anyone could see him sneezing. However, he still seemed enthusiastic, rummaging through the large book behind the cash register, occasionally manually writing financial notes for his small shop.
"Yes, sir. I brought it."
"Good. I heard it's going to snow tonight, you should head back to the dorm and rest."
Josephine merely nodded when Tomy glanced at her.
Although time seemed to pass slowly, today's work ended earlier, so Josephine quickly called Thane after passing through the gleaming glass door of 'Foggy Brew'. She tightened her long, gray coat, then loosely wrapped her grandmother's scarf around her neck.
Josephine only needed to wait for Thane to appear. She still had more than half an hour to go on a date with her boyfriend; ten minutes before eleven, Josephine had to be in her room in Kalynda Lodge, owned by Kingston University.
"Josephine!"
Her emerald eyes caught someone smiling beside the oak tree across the street; its leaves had fallen completely, leaving only bare and lonely branches. Thane waved, smiling enthusiastically as he watched Josephine's agile movements as she approached him.
"Have you been waiting long?" the girl asked, rushing into Thane's hug, surrounded by his musky scent.
"No. Although, yes-it's not a problem, my hardworking girlfriend always works hard all the time. Shouldn't I compromise for her?"
"Right."
"Forget it, shouldn't we walk away from here?"
"Right again." Josephine always felt comfortable and warm whenever she was by Thane's side; the guy had a pleasant personality.
Thane opened his broad palm, so Josephine slipped in and was locked between his fingers. They had to enjoy tonight.
Actually, walking along the canal towards winter wasn't an unusual situation for Josephine; it just became more special because she did it with someone, and she never even imagined a moment like this would appear in her life.
"Do you like it, Josephine?" Thane's voice sounded soft and warm.
"I love it, even though the time we spend together is short, but that's okay, I still enjoy it." Her guilt resurfaced, etching a burdened expression.
"Sorry for always having little time for you."
"Hey, what's on your mind? Why the sudden sadness?" He held Josephine's hand and stopped, then examined her expression, tilting his head.
"Hop on my back, you must be tired." Thane's request was kind enough to brighten Josephine's mood again.
"You want me to?"
"Yeah." Thane let go of her, then knelt, facing away from Josephine.
"Come on, my back is spacious for you." The girl did so, climbing onto Thane's back, and wrapping her arms loosely around his neck, which was wrapped in a black scarf.
"Am I heavy? You have to be honest."
"Not at all, you're as light as a feather. How can someone grow up with a body as thin as this, do you eat too little?" He continued walking slowly, enjoying the atmosphere around the canal, among the leafless trees that were almost frozen.
Josephine felt her life was under control, so it wasn't a big deal if her body was thin; they continued discussing simple things as if time slowed down, and the barges remained in their positions.
As the distance drew closer to Kalynda Lodge, Thane crossed the street with Josephine on his back. They only stopped and got off after arriving at the side of a quiet alley with limited lighting; the lamps on the poles around it were weak and dim, barely holding up.
The weather grew colder and contributed to Josephine rubbing her palms together as she looked down.
"Look, it's snowing." Thane's voice made Josephine lift her face, smiling warmly; it was the first snow of the year.
"Winter has officially begun."
"What about the 'Winter Wonderland Cruise'?" Thane leaned against the three-meter-high wall behind him; they were trapped between the boundary wall and a closed café building, leaving a one-meter gap, and the distance from here to the dormitory was about thirty meters.
"Do you want to go there?" Josephine also leaned against the café wall, her emerald earrings alternately gazing at the moon and the snowflakes in the air.
"Yes, with you."
"Okay, we can try it on the weekend."
It was quiet, the air from their breaths was like puffs of smoke.
When Josephine's eyes returned to Thane, the man looked different.
"What's wrong? Are you thinking something?"
"Yeah, I'm thinking and want to ask."
"Say it."
Thane's expression became more serious than before, his right hand clenched something behind his coat pocket without turning away from Josephine.
"We don't have the privilege of being immortal, one day we'll disappear. If it were you, what would you want before disappearing from this world?"
Each word from his lips was neatly arranged and easily spoken, as if already prepared.
"Me?" Josephine smiled thinly, thinking of something simple.
"I don't know, although death is indeed a destiny, but I haven't thought about getting closer to that situation."
"But if you died today? What would you think of as your last hope?"
"Ah. If that happened today, I'd want to hug my mom and grandma before leaving."
"They're not here, Josephine." Thane smiled meaningfully, walking closer to his girlfriend.
"Your hope will never come true."
"What do you mean-"
Ugh!
The sharp, silver object-came out of Thane's coat pocket, then tore through Josephine's coat with strong pressure, continuing to push and tear her blue blouse, then pierced through Josephine's white skin and ended up in her heart within her chest.
She jerked, spitting out a lot of blood from her lips while touching the silver dagger still lodged in her chest.
She bent over and coughed, her palm feeling hot and painful when it touched the dagger that injured her.
"W-what is this, Thane? Wh-why?" Josephine bent over, she managed to glance at Thane, who looked so flat, without any compassion in him.
Josephine collapsed and lay on the ground, trying to pull out the silver dagger, enduring the excruciating pain while maintaining her breathing.
Thane still stood beside her, unmoving, watching the girl suffer and die.
"Hey, does it hurt? Huh?" He laughed like a psychopath; he was not the Thane Rylan his girlfriend knew.
Who was this man, really?
Josephine's breathing began to falter, she fought with all her might-although it hurt her head, she managed to pull out the silver dagger, dropping it to the ground, letting her palm have severe burns, and the blood flowed even more.
"There's no mom or grandma for you, so just say goodbye to me, Josephine." Thane crouched beside his girlfriend's head, touching her increasingly pale face, smiling triumphantly.
"You'll die this time, Josephine. The dagger has dark magic and poison."
Josephine was speechless, but her palm tried to press the wound; she was known as a 'healer' in the Starweaver Clan, her hands had that special ability, but Thane had proven his words.
Josephine's strength was ineffective.
"You know, I really hate you; you shouldn't have accepted me from the start, because you threw yourself at death, Josephine. I hate you so much that it almost ruined my plan, so it's better for you to be like this. I'll represent you in saying goodbye to everyone, my dear."
Thane's face was very cruel, although Josephine could barely see him; her vision was getting blurrier.
She managed to glance at the moon shining and the snowflakes falling again before everything turned dark.
From the rooftop of a building, someone watched the murder, but he smiled faintly, enjoying it while sipping a cigarette.
His gray eyes, which held complexity, he enjoyed Josephine's death moment, waiting for Thane Rylan to finish everything.
"We'll meet soon, Miss Adeline. See you," he whispered with great pleasure.
