Selene Carter lost her parents at a young age when they were killed by rogue wolves. Now she is attending the Moon Ceremony but she is the only one who hasn't shifted.
The elites were taunting her.
"You are as worthless as your parents were." An Alpha said.
She tried to hold her tears inside and successfully did so. Meanwhile, the other Omegas were shifting into their full forms.
**
The past.
Selene was in her boyfriend Caleb's bedroom. His parents were gone for the weekend. So, they had the whole house to themselves.
Selene and Caleb were on the bed snuggling against each other's necks. They kissed softly and Caleb slowly undressed Selene by removing a strap of her T-shirt.
He kissed her shoulder. Selene whimpered at his touch. That was the night she was to lose her virginity.
"I'm not sure what I'm doing." Caleb laughed. He was a virgin too.
Selene chuckled. "Let's find out together."
She removed his T-shirt revealing his chiseled chest. She ran her fingers across it. Caleb then removed her T-shirt and she was braless, so he kissed her breast.
Both of them started fully undressing each other while kissing passionately.
"Are you sure you want this?" Caleb asked her.
"Yes." She replied. "More than anything."
She let out a passionate cry as Caleb entered her. He thrusted gently and the bed rocked underneath their weight.
When they were done, they cuddled next to each other. Selene didn't want that moment to ever end.
But she didn't realize the horrendousness of what was about to happen next.
Selene came home to a brutal scene. Her parents were dismembered head to toe. At only sixteen-years-old she let out a cry that could have rivaled an Alpha's.
**
The present.
While the others are transforming, Selene notices a strange set of eyes watching her from afar in the woods.
She wanted to run away but she knew she would be taunted even more if she left the Moon Ceremony earlier than everyone else.
She waited for it to be over.
"How are you holding up, Selene?" Caleb asked her.
They were friends since childhood. Selene always thought Caleb would end up her mate. But Olivia was chosen for him instead.
Selene sighed. "I'm doing my best. I miss my parents so much, Caleb."
She couldn't hold the tears back any longer. She let them out and rested her head on Caleb's shoulder.
"Get off him!" A blonde girl yelled.
She pushed Selene off of Caleb. Selene hit the ground on her bottom.
"I'm sorry." Selene said wiping her tears with her cuff.
Olivia put her arms around Caleb's shoulders. "Serves you right, bitch."
"Now, now girls. Behave." Alpha Warren entered the scene.
Selene stood up wiping dirt off of her clothes.
"I better go." Selene said now fully composed.
With that, she left the finished Moon Ceremony. She was the only one who didn't shift that night. Maybe it was the loss of her parents which didn't trigger the factor within her?
**
Selene had her backpack strapped to her as she walked back to her empty apartment.
I'm so alone, she thought. Even Caleb has Olivia.
She still had thoughts of Caleb and her at night when she was asleep. How his body would feel against hers. How their lips would touch in a romantic fusion.
Whoosh.
She heard something and stopped in her tracks. There was definitely somebody close. Whatever it was. It was not human.
The night was dark and the moon hardly shone. And most of the streetlights weren't working. Selene saw something in the hedges nearby. She turned on the flashlight of her phone.
"Come out!" She called. "I'm not afraid of you."
Red eyes shone through the edge. It was definitely a wolf. Or a vampire?
The stranger leapt from the volume of grass they were hiding in. It was a rogue werewolf. Like one that had killed her parents. He leapt on to her.
Selene saw its claws flash in the moonlight. She was covering her face though she knew it would be to no avail. She suddenly heard a cry but surprisingly it wasn't from her own mouth. The rogue wolf fell away from her, on its back, onto the pavement.
A mysterious figure was standing just inches away from Selene and the dead rogue. It was a werewolf Selene had never seen before. It transformed back to its human form. Then she realized he was the most handsome man she had ever seen.
He had long locks of jet-black hair. When he smiled his dimples clearly showed. He was wearing a blue suit but his muscles bulged from underneath. Selene felt an instant attraction to him.
"Mine." The stranger said.
Their eyes meet and the mate bond falls into place. Selene's heart starts pounding. She manages to get up and run away.
**
The next day Selene is busy at work in her college's cafeteria. She was a literature student but due to her parents' deaths she had to work alongside her studies.
"I'm sorry about last night." It was Caleb.
She handed him his usual food and drink. "It's okay."
"No, it's not." Caleb protested. "I know Olivia is my mate but she shouldn't act that way with you."
"She's just jealous, Caleb." Selene said and gave him a warm smile. "You and I were supposed to be mates."
Caleb sighed. "Maybe that would've been for the best."
They both locked eyes with each other. But weirdly Selene did not feel the same way she did as before. It was like her heart belonged to somebody else.
"One latte please." Someone new entered the café as soon as Caleb had left.
"Sure thing." Selene said without even looking at the new customer.
She turned around to fill a cup but sensed the stranger's eyes digging into her soul.
Slowly, she turned her head around.
It was the stranger who had saved her last night. He was dressed differently with a white T-shirt and tight jeans. Selene could not help scanning him from head to toe. She felt a lump in her throat.
"Diana!" Selene called her co-worker. "Give this man a latte. I'll be right back."
She went into the kitchen taking off her apron and hanging it on a stand. Her heart seemed to be pounding out of her chest. This new werewolf, was surely an Alpha, given his charisma and age. Usually, werewolves mated with similarly aged werewolves. But this Alpha had mated with her.
She started crying. I can't accept this bond.
She fell to her knees and let out a howl. Luckily, there was no one in the kitchen at that time to have heard her scream.
She rejected the Alpha's bond. She wasn't strong enough. She had not even transformed at the Moon Ceremony. She knew she was too weak to accept his love.
Outside the kitchen, the Alpha felt a ping at his heart. He put a hand to his chest. He knew he had been rejected.
But why? He thought. No, she will be mine.
