Chapter 1 Betrayal In The Shadows

Camilla's POV

My hands tremble as I watch them kissing and moaning on the bed. Their naked bodies surge on each other.

Baffled, my grip on the doorknob hardened, my once bright and warm eyes dimmed cold, and the smile left my face.

They hadn't noticed I was here, judging from the abusive words they used on me.

"She's worthless, you're everything I ever needed" he whispers, causing her to chuckle the more, her cheeks flushing red.

My body vibrates with a quiet and seething anger as tears cloud my eyes.

"Merlo?" I whispered, too stunned to think of anything straight. They threw their faces at me, not even feeling remorseful.

"Shit!" He spat, pulling out of her and rising from the bed. His heavy dick fell lazily between his thighs as the skin on his face shranked.

He dragged his pants from the ground and wore while I stared, with a fierce wounded pride.

Why me? I just got back from the hospital after realizing I've got a year to live, and he is already celebrating with my stepsister.

Diana curled herself into a corner with a pungent attitude, and I felt like suffocating.

She rolled her eyes with an expression of contempt, her lips spewing hurtful words while she crawled down from the bed.

"Learn to knock Camila!" He roared at my face, and I scoffed unbelievably, boiling at heart.

"How could you?" I cried but he kissed his teeth.

"You're useless to me and I want to call this quit!" He replied so bluntly. His voice was laced with venom, cutting through my heart like a knife.

"What! "No, Merlo, this isn't real" i panicked, trying to hold him, but he moved away from me like a plague.

In the blink of an eye, Diana suddenly handed him a paper which he waved at me.

I didn't even realize that she had been taken from God knows where. It seemed she was in control.

I was frozen as Diana eyed me. She hadn't said a word, but her eyes said everything.

It was obvious I was the fool, doing all the labor, no breaks and stress led me to have cancer.

My eyes had deep sadness in them, a sense of betrayal, and it hurt so much.

"Sign the divorce paper Camilia, it's over" his voice jerked me back to reality, but I wasn't willing to.

Not when I needed him the most in my last days. I felt cold running down my spine, my heart flipped, and my tongue felt too heavy to roll out a word.

"You are a risk, a liability to everything I have built. I don't need you!" he declared, tossing the divorce papers at my face.

The sharp edge slashed my cheek, like I was flogged with it, and I swirled my face aside.

Tears gushed from my eyes. The last words of my mom linger in my mind. She says I'd regret it, and I'm now.

The irony is that everything he owns belongs to me!

His scornful words hit me hard, everything had been ripped away by the one man I had trusted, my husband.

I tried to plead with him, even though it was a stupid idea to begin with. However, Merlo wasn't willing to listen.

He had made up his mind. The love was no longer there.

My stepsister was everything to me, my happiness but, oddly, she has become my nemesis.

Slowly, I picked up the paper with the pen, having so much hate and disgust in my heart already.

I furiously signed the paper in tears and threw it at his face. It was time to wake up to reality.

But deep in my heart, I wanted him to call me back and apologize. I'd still be willing to forgive.

"You'd pay for this!" I screamed, giving in to fate already as my face had turned pale.

The doctor had told me not to get stressed, but this was killing me.

I felt a sense of loss and griefing as he glared at me. There was a sudden silence before Diana burst into laughter.

"You own nothing bitch!" She mocked, pushing me back, and I slammed my back against the door.

I sniffed, stuttering to pull myself from the wall, a storm brewing inside me.

"Watch, you better get scared because I'm coming back!" I declared to both of them while stomping out of the room, exhausted.

I never meant it. I just wanted to console myself and not freak out. If this was a nightmare, I would want to wake up.

I could suddenly hear from behind me, Diana's voice, their whispers growing loud in my ear.

"Are you just going to let her leave? She might come back for her inheritance! Camilla can be crazy at times."

"Let's silence her"

Fear gripped me as I tottered hastily downstairs.

Hastily, I got to the exit door to get out, but it was on an automatic lock. I forgot how to breathe as I became hypersensitive.

The hair on my skin stood at its end and sweat beaded me. They'd kill me.

"Camilia love" his voice called, and grief stole the very air out of me. His steady footsteps stomp from behind me.

I threw my face at him and realized he was holding a gun which he loaded with a magazine at each step he took to get to me.

There was nowhere to run and I was trapped. Wanting to save my life, I fell on my knees where I stood to beg for my life.

"Please, I'll let it slide, I swear, I won't come close to you both, just let me live" I petitioned, weeping profusely and bowing my head.

He was an inch close, and I was staring at him like a god. A dirty smile lingered around his lips.

"I should have gotten rid of you a long time, love" he teased, using his agile finger to fondle my hair, and then he inserted it between my ears.

He won't kill me, he can't. I just discovered he had a gun.

Merlo squatted low in my position, used his free hand to grab my jaw and spat on my face.

I flinched, my breath slow and deliberate and I shut my eyes, devastated and irritated.

"You'd die anyway... "I'm just easing your pain to the afterlife" he whispers, his breath pouring into my face.

I spurred my eyes open only to meet his hot gaze that seemed to melt my skin, and before I could say a word, he shot me at my lower abdomen.

For a moment, time stopped, my life flashed before me in seconds and my body lazily fell to the ground.

Everything was upside down and I was convulsing. A sudden cold flushed inside me and I could see him in that squatting position. His hand had grabbed a fistful of my hair and the gun in his other hand relaxed on his knee.

"Please... "I'm pregnant," I cried weakly as blood drooled from my lips. My weak hands stretched out to him, but he kicked my hands away.

"You're dead anyway and the child means nothing to me!" He grinned, his eyes widened in mockery.

My eyes rolled towards Diana, who was sitting on the dining table opposite us, swaying her legs and chuckling.

She had an apple in her hand, chewing it and Merlo asked how they'd dispose of my body.

I was still breathing, I could still survive. My fragile body barely made a dent in the cold ground.

Every inhale of air was a struggle, my eyes darted to and fro, scared of the darkness that would soon consume me.

"Bury her in the backyard" she spewed, as though controlling his every decision. My lashes flickered as I placed my palm on my stomach gaggling.

Nothing rings in my mind except the excruciating pain coursing through me.

I couldn't die, I'd return and make them pay.

Their voices were fading and the next thing I could recall was the cold sand pouring over my face, a grunt and shovel hitting my chest.
