Cora POV:
Felicity Wynn was dead.
She was Corbett Solomon's lover, and she was pregnant with his baby.
I sat blankly on the edge of the bed, looking at the tall, ruthless man standing before me-my husband, the Alpha King of the werewolf pack, Corbett Solomon.
A freezing tremor seized my entire body.
An hour ago, his hands were locked around my throat, his eyes bloodshot as he interrogated me, "Did you push Felicity down those stairs?!"
Now, an hour later, he stood towering over me, mercilessly unleashing the terrifying, suffocating aura of the Alpha King.
His icy voice echoed through the room, "I, Corbett Solomon, hereby officially and unilaterally sever the soul bond with Cora Houston, and permanently reject you as my mate! You owe her two lives for the rest of yours!"
He was right about one thing. Two lives. Felicity had been pregnant with Corbett's pup.
With his ruthless declaration, I felt a tearing, agonizing pain rip deep within my soul. As his fated mate, the rightful Luna of the pack, I was now nothing but an absolute joke.
Enduring the physical and mental torture of my soul being ripped apart, I looked up at Corbett with red, tear-filled eyes, my body trembling uncontrollably. "I didn't push her! How many times do I have to tell you?!"
Corbett didn't listen. He merely glared at me heartlessly, as if looking at a sickening spectacle. "Do you think explaining is of any use now?"
It was useless. It was too late!
In the eyes of the Alpha King, if he believed I did it, then I did it! No matter how much I tried to explain, my words could never outweigh a dead woman!
I suddenly laughed. The shattering of our soul bond caused a trail of blood to spill from the corner of my mouth, but I stood up abruptly.
Using every ounce of my remaining strength to meet his gaze, I enunciated my acceptance of the broken vow word by word: "Fine! I, Cora Houston, accept your rejection!"
As the vow fell from my lips, the soul tie between us snapped completely.
"Corbett, I have loved you for ten years. Let's just treat my ten years of blind devotion as a joke. From now on, we go our separate ways!"
I gave you my love; give me back my heart! I held back my despair and tears, forcing myself to smile prouder than anyone else in the world.
However, Corbett looked at the blood on my lips, his cold sneer only deepening. He closed in abruptly, grabbing me fiercely by the chin. "You didn't think simply accepting the rejection and giving up the Luna position would be the end of it, did you?"
My face went deathly pale, the sheer agony of my soul's injury making me sway on my feet. "What else do you want?!"
"I am terminating every alliance and business contract with the Houston family!"
He ruthlessly declared his verdict, every word dripping with ice. "Starting tomorrow, I will pull all my investments and sever every partnership we share."
I slumped back onto the edge of the bed, shaking uncontrollably. I looked at the breathtakingly handsome man in front of me. His sharp, defined features and profound eyes were exactly the ones I had loved so deeply, but suddenly, I felt like I didn't know him at all.
Five years of unrequited love, five years of being bound as mates. I had left such long footprints in his life, yet now, for an unwarranted charge, he was not only severing our soul bond but also cutting off all cooperation.
"Isn't it enough that I am the only one suffering?" I looked at Corbett with bloodshot eyes. "Why sever all ties with the Houston family?! My parents treated you like their own son! What has our family ever done to wrong you?!"
"Felicity's death is the greatest wrong your family has ever done to me..." Corbett pinched my chin tighter, smiling like a demon crawling out of hell. "Using dirty tricks to force me to take you as my mate wasn't enough, and now you even took her life. Cora, I am truly not as ruthless as you are!"
Like a basin of freezing water poured over my head, I shivered violently. "Is this how you see me?"
"How I see you?" Corbett acted as if he had heard a joke, his hate-filled gaze sweeping across my face. "Are you even worthy of being seen by me? Cora, do you think too highly of yourself? From today on, you will pay the price for Felicity's death!"
Heavy rain began to pour outside. Huge raindrops smashed against the window with crisp, violent sounds. As the roar of the rain amplified, my heart grew colder. In a tone of extreme agony, I murmured, "Corbett, if one day you realize that you wronged me..."
I saw his jaw clench, a fleeting shift in his expression as if his heart had inexplicably tightened for a second, but he quickly recovered his ruthless demeanor. Only his eyes remained fixed on me, carrying a distinct hatred. "Wronged you? Cora, in this lifetime, you are the one who wronged me!"
A sudden thunderclap exploded across the sky, deafening me.
I suddenly lost all my strength, stumbling two steps back. As the rain grew heavier outside, my tears flowed uncontrollably. The man I loved turned and slammed the door as he left. The moment the door closed, it was as if our two worlds were completely isolated.
From then on, my world fell apart.
It had been raining for days. On the day of Felicity's burial, a continuous drizzle fell from the gray sky. Many pack members had gathered. Corbett, deaf to any of my pleas, forced me to my knees in front of Felicity's grave, acting as if he was dead set on making me kneel there until I died.
I struggled, but he slapped me fiercely across the face. "Stop pretending to be innocent! You are the last person qualified to play the victim!"
Enduring the stinging pain, I suddenly smiled.
In the cold drizzle, my laughter echoed-hollow, drawn-out, and full of absolute despair. Corbett, completely ignoring the watching eyes of the pack, stepped forward and kicked me viciously in the mouth. I rolled away into the mud, coughing up a mouthful of blood.
Cora POV:
Corbett's polished dress shoes appeared in my line of sight.
I looked up at him, and suddenly, the fated mate bond that usually tugged at my heart just snapped into nothingness.
How ruthless could one Alpha be? In the end, the fault was mine. My only sin was falling in love with him.
I gritted my teeth, suppressing my inner wolf's whimper. "Don't even think about making me kneel to her!"
"For the crimes you've committed, kneeling is a mercy!" Corbett roared, his Alpha aura suffocating the room.
He hauled me up by the collar, only to hurl me back onto the cold floor. I didn't utter a single cry of pain.
I let out a hollow laugh. "You parade your mistresses and she-wolves around, and I turn a blind eye. Your scandals are plastered across human and pack tabloids daily, and I pretend not to know. I've acted like a loyal, submissive dog as your Luna, but do you have even a shred of conscience? Me, plotting to kill Felicity Wynn? What is she even worth? Bloodline, education, background-does she even compare to a single claw on my finger?"
"So you finally show your true colors." Corbett sneered, using the tip of his shoe to tilt my chin up. "I prepared a grand gift for you today. I wonder if you'll like it."
Before his words even settled, a row of Pack Enforcers swarmed through the door. Before I could even process what was happening, they lunged forward, pinning me down.
The burn of the silver snapped me out of my daze, and my entire body started thrashing wildly. "Let me go! On what grounds are you arresting me?!"
"Murderer! She's a murderer!"
"Spit on her! And she calls herself a high-born Omega!"
"Absolutely heartless! What a toxic bitch!"
"Our Alpha King is cursed to have a mate like her!"
Pack reporters and flashing cameras surrounded me, capturing every ounce of my panic and humiliation.
My face was deathly pale, my soul feeling as if it had been ripped from my body. "Who gave the order to arrest me? Who?!"
"Oh? Do you really think that without absolute proof, the Enforcers would falsely accuse you?"
The man's deep, rumbling voice came from behind me. As I was forced to turn around, I saw him holding a burial urn. Clad in a bespoke suit, he stepped back into my line of sight, exuding the oppressive dominance of a true Alpha King.
My eyes burned crimson with unshed tears. "Corbett, you sent them to arrest me?"
Corbett gave a faint, mocking smile. "I am simply giving Amelia the truth she deserves. The Enforcers and I reviewed the security footage together."
"The truth? The truth?!" I repeated, as if I had just heard the most hysterical joke in the world. I threw my head back and started laughing wildly.
Everyone was whispering, pointing fingers, yet stepping back from my manic state.
The live broadcast cameras captured my absolute descent into madness. Across the territories, in front of millions of wolves and humans alike, I looked like a feral, monstrous creature.
The silver handcuffs rattled sharply as I struggled against them, ignoring the searing burns on my flesh. I screamed at Corbett, "Corbett! Do you have any heart left in that chest of yours?! Five years as your chosen mate! You wouldn't even let a rogue be humiliated like this!"
"Humiliated?" Corbett closed the distance between us in a blink, his large hand clamping painfully around my jaw. "You committed this atrocity yourself. How can you call it humiliation?"
"I said I didn't do it! You have no right to throw me into Silvergate!" I let out a miserable, broken laugh.
My final, desperate struggles couldn't change a thing. Reflected in his cold, Alpha gaze, I looked utterly pathetic.
Smack.
A vicious slap landed across my cheek, the familiar, stinging pain radiating through my skull. Huge tears rolled down my face.
Then, fueled by a sudden surge of adrenaline, I ripped myself free just long enough to snatch the urn from Corbett's grasp.
Right in front of the flashing cameras and the gasping pack members, I smashed it onto the floor!
"Corbett Solomon, let me tell you something!" I screamed over the shattering of the ceramic. "In this lifetime, I would never stoop so low as to do such a filthy thing! Reject my truth if you want, but I will never let a dead she-wolf be placed above me! The Moon Goddess is watching, and sooner or later, you will get what you deserve!"
Cora POV:
The silence was broken by a roar of pure Alpha fury.
Corbett's power exploded from him, a physical storm that swept across the garden. Lower-ranking wolves flinched, instinctively bowing their heads in submission.
He stalked toward me, his gray eyes now blazing with molten gold. "You... dare..." he seethed, his voice a low, trembling growl.
I met his gaze, my face a mask of cold, broken indifference. A wild laugh bubbled up from my chest. "Dare? You've destroyed everything I am, Corbett Solomon. What is there left for me not to dare?"
The enforcers seized me, their fingers digging into my arms until I thought the bones would snap.
The burn of the silver was a dull throb now, nothing compared to the gaping wound in my soul.
Corbett took a deep, shuddering breath, visibly fighting the urge to tear me apart with his bare hands. He jabbed a finger toward Officer Sullivan. "Get her out of my sight! Take her to Silvergate now! No one sees her without my direct order!"
They started dragging me away.
I didn't fight. I just twisted my head, my eyes locked on Corbett's. I wanted to burn this image of him into my memory-the man who had promised me forever and then personally escorted me to hell. In his eyes, I saw his love for a ghost and his hatred for me, a living, breathing woman. They were two sides of the same terrible coin.
Just as they hauled me toward the garden gate, I gathered the last of my strength and screamed his name.
"Corbett Solomon!"
My voice was shrill, a banshee's cry filled with all the poison he had poured into me. He had already started to turn away, but my scream made his entire body go rigid. He didn't turn back.
"You listen to me!" I shrieked. "Everything you have done to me today, everything you've done to my family, all the pain and injustice you've piled on my soul!"
"I swear it! I swear on my shattered soul and the love you trampled under your feet!"
"One day, you will regret this! You will crawl on your knees and beg me for a forgiveness you will never, ever receive!"
"You will live in an agony of regret so deep it will make the silver shackles of Silvergate feel like a lover's caress! That is my curse on you!"
The words hung in the air, vibrating with power. His broad back trembled.
A sharp, violent pain, worse than the Rejection itself, lanced through my chest. The broken bond.
It wasn't completely severed. My raw, absolute hatred had just shot through it and stabbed him in the heart.
Corbett POV:
The sudden surge of her raw hatred hit me like a physical blow. I flinched, instinctively clapping a hand to my chest as the blood drained from my face. A sharp, agonizing phantom pain radiated through the frayed edges of our broken bond.
For a split second, my blinding rage cracked. A jolt of shock went through me as a fleeting image violently surfaced in my mind-a memory I had tried so desperately to suppress. It was Cora, years ago, long before Felicity's return. She was carefully tending to a wound on my arm. Her touch had been so incredibly gentle, her eyes looking up at me filled with nothing but pure, unadulterated adoration.
I shook my head violently, banishing the memory back into the dark. I couldn't afford this weakness. When my composure returned, I locked my jaw, making sure my eyes were colder than a winter grave.
Cora POV:
The enforcers gave me no more chances. They shoved me roughly into the back of a black, windowless transport van.
The door slammed shut with a deafening bang, plunging me into total darkness. I felt the vehicle lurch into motion, carrying me toward the legendary prison built to hold the worst monsters of our kind.
I curled up on the cold metal floor, the silver on my wrists a constant, searing fire.
I didn't cry. My tears had been burned away by the curse.
I closed my eyes, and the only thing I could see was the way he had instinctively clutched his chest before I was taken, his face contorted in a moment of shared agony.
