When the Queen Returns

Author: : Burch Minow
Genre: Romance
I built Liam Carter's political career from nothing, forging him into a powerful Senate candidate. Our engagement gala, a critical fundraiser, was set to crown us as D.C.'s ultimate power couple. But on that perfect night, the doorbell rang. It wasn't the catering staff; it was Brianna, a junior aide, clutches her very pregnant stomach. "It's Liam's," she whispered. Liam burst in, canceling the gala to manage the "crisis," his eyes colder than ice. He ordered me to stay silent, to protect his career, then swiftly blacklisted me from every connection I had built. Even my own parents sided with him, more concerned with appearances than my broken heart, dismissing his betrayal as a "man's needs." Isolated and professionally ruined, I watched my carefully constructed life unravel. The final blow: Brianna flaunted my hand-knitted scarf, a symbol of our struggles, now a dog bed for her new puppy. That scarf wasn't just fabric; it was a piece of my soul. Seeing it desecrated ignited a rage so pure and hot, it shattered any remaining pretense of civility. This wasn't just politics or business anymore; this was about my life, my history, everything I held sacred. I called Liam. "I want you to lose," I told him. " I want you to feel what it's like to have everything you've ever worked for turn to ash." With a new alliance by my side, I walked out, ready to reclaim my name, my power, and rewrite my future, no matter the cost.

Introduction

I want you to feel what it's like to have everything you've ever worked for turn to ash." With a new alliance by my side, I walked out, ready to reclaim my name, my power, and rewrite my future, no matter the cost.

Chapter 1

The doorbell rang at seven p.m.

I was in my Georgetown townhouse, already wearing the silver gown for the gala. It was supposed to be our engagement party, a major fundraiser for Liam' s Senate campaign. Everything was perfect.

I opened the door.

It wasn't the car service. It was Brianna Evans, a junior aide from the campaign. Her eyes were red and swollen, and she was clutching her stomach.

She was pregnant. Very pregnant.

"Ava," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Please. I just need to talk to you."

I stepped back, letting her in. The air in the room turned cold. I built Liam' s career from nothing. I knew every staffer, every donor, every secret. But I didn't know this one.

"What is this, Brianna?" I asked. My voice was steady, like a news anchor reporting a distant disaster.

"It's Liam's," she said, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "He was going to tell you. He promised. But now the baby... it's coming early. The doctors are worried."

She took a shaky step closer. "Please, just let us have a chance. Let the baby have a chance. Don't let this ruin him."

The words hung in the air, thick and suffocating. She wasn't asking for my forgiveness. She was asking me to protect his career. My career. The life I had built for us.

Just then, Liam burst through the door. He didn't even look at me. He went straight to Brianna, his face a mask of panic.

"What are you doing here? I told you to wait in the car."

He saw the look on my face, and his expression hardened. He turned to me, his voice low and dangerous.

"We have a problem, Ava. A big one."

"I can see that," I said.

"The gala is off," he announced, pulling out his phone. "I'm canceling. Citing a private family matter."

He didn't wait for my response. He was already dialing his press secretary. Then he looked back at me, his eyes like chips of ice.

"This cannot get out. If this scandal breaks, the Senate run is over. Everything we worked for is gone. You will stay quiet. You will handle this. After the election, I'll make it up to you. But right now, my priority is damage control."

He grabbed Brianna's arm, pulling her toward the door. As they stepped outside, the street erupted in flashing lights. Paparazzi. They were already here for the gala, but now they had a new story.

I watched through the window as Liam, the charismatic Congressman, rushed a distraught, pregnant intern to a waiting car. The perfect picture of a hero.

And I was the villain, left alone in the dark.

Chapter 2

I stood there for a long time, the silver gown feeling like a suit of armor that had failed. The silence in the house was louder than the sirens outside.

He didn't say he was sorry. He said it was a problem. He didn't ask how I felt. He gave me orders.

My mind, the strategic genius he relied on, started working. Not for him. For me.

I picked up my personal phone, the one he didn't know about. I scrolled to a contact saved as "D.C. Whispers." A political gossip blogger I'd fed stories to for years to strategically damage Liam' s rivals.

I typed a short, anonymous tip.

"Congressman Liam Carter cancels high-dollar engagement gala at the last minute. Cites 'family emergency.' Photographed rushing young, pregnant staffer Brianna Evans to Sibley Hospital. Fiancée Ava Chen nowhere in sight."

I hit send. The first domino had fallen.

Then I made another call. To my doctor.

"I need to schedule a procedure," I said, my voice flat. "As soon as possible."

The next day, I was in a sterile white room. The decision was difficult. We had struggled with fertility for years. A part of me had desperately wanted a child with the man I thought I loved. But that man was a ghost. A character I had created.

The procedure was quick, efficient, and empty. I felt a profound sense of loss, not just for the pregnancy, but for the future I had believed in.

When it was over, I sat in the recovery room and called Liam. He answered on the first ring, his voice sharp with anxiety.

"What is it? Did you talk to the press? You need to release a statement of support."

"I'm not releasing any statements," I said calmly. "I'm calling to inform you that my lawyer will be filing for divorce."

There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line. We had been legally married in a private ceremony a year ago. It was for tax benefits and to solidify the "power couple" image. Another one of my strategies.

"Divorce?" he finally sputtered, his voice rising. "Are you insane? We are in the middle of a campaign!"

"The campaign is your problem now, Liam," I said. "So is Brianna. And so is her baby."

I hung up before he could reply. I felt nothing. Just the cold, clean certainty of a plan perfectly executed. The part of me that loved him was gone. All that was left was the strategist. And she was just getting started.
