When the Perfect Life Crumbles

Author: : Su Liao
Genre: Billionaires
I was eight months pregnant, my life with my charismatic tech mogul husband, Ethan, seemingly perfect. We were at a glittering gala, celebrating our success, our future family. Then, a sudden shove sent me tumbling down a flight of stairs, triggering premature labor. In the hospital's sterile hallway, I overheard Ethan's voice, cold and calm, making unimaginable arrangements: killing our seemingly "weak" newborn son, replacing him with his mistress Jessica's baby, and sterilizing me. He presented me with a healthy infant, claiming it was ours while secretly poisoning me to ensure I could never conceive again. Back at our ranch, Jessica, his mistress, openly flaunted her role as the "real" mother, nursing "our" child, showered with Ethan's attention while I was neglected and humiliated. She even showed me a video of Ethan by my baby's incubator, moments before his death. The man I loved, the father of my child, was a monster who planned it all-my fall, my baby's death, my sterilization. My perfect life was a cruel, calculated lie, and my heart shattered into fragments of disbelief and searing pain. But beneath the agony, a chilling resolve ignited. I would play along. I would gather every scrap of damning evidence. I would shatter his empire just as he shattered my life. My revenge would be cold, precise, and utterly devastating.

Introduction

Chapter 1

The city lights of Austin glittered below, a million tiny stars.

I leaned against the balcony railing of the tech gala, eight months pregnant, my hand resting on my swollen belly.

Ethan, my husband, founder of Innovatech Solutions, was inside, charming a group of investors.

He was charismatic, wealthy, and I loved him. Our life felt perfect.

My feet ached in the heels Ethan insisted I wear.

"You look stunning, Sarah," he'd said, his eyes bright.

I smiled, remembering.

Eleanor, Ethan' s mother, had given me a cool nod earlier.

She never thought a community health worker was good enough for her tech mogul son.

She preferred Jessica Vance, Ethan' s college ex, now some kind of social media wannabe.

I took a deep breath of the cool night air.

A sudden, hard shove from behind.

My hands flew out, grasping at nothing.

I tumbled forward, down a short flight of marble stairs.

Pain exploded in my back, my stomach.

I cried out.

Ethan was there in an instant, his face a mask of panic.

"Sarah! Oh my god, Sarah!"

He knelt beside me, his voice frantic.

"Someone call an ambulance! My wife is pregnant!"

His arms were around me, strong, reassuring.

Or so I thought.

He rushed me to a private hospital, one his family used.

Everything was a blur of pain and fear.

Doctors and nurses swarmed.

"We need to deliver the baby," a calm voice said. "It's too early, but we have to."

I squeezed Ethan' s hand, terrified.

"It'll be okay, Sarah," he whispered, his lips against my forehead. "Our baby will be okay."

They wheeled me into an operating room.

The world went dark.

I woke up slowly, the room dim.

A dull ache throbbed through me.

My belly felt strangely empty.

"Ethan?" I whispered.

No answer. I was alone.

A wave of anxiety washed over me. My baby. Where was my baby?

I fumbled for the call button.

A nurse appeared, her smile too bright.

"Mrs. Hayes, you're awake. Your baby boy was delivered. He's in the neonatal ICU. He's a fighter."

Relief, so sharp it made me gasp. A boy. Our son. He was alive.

"Can I see him?"

"Soon," she said. "The doctor will be in to talk to you. You need to rest."

She adjusted my pillows and left.

Rest. I couldn't rest.

A faint sound drifted from the hallway. Voices.

One sounded like Ethan' s.

I had to see my baby. I had to see Ethan.

My body protested with every movement, a searing pain in my abdomen.

I pushed the blanket aside, my legs unsteady.

I gripped the IV pole, using it for support, and shuffled towards the door.

The hallway was quiet, dimly lit.

The voices were clearer now, coming from an office a little way down, near the neonatal ICU.

Ethan' s voice.

"The arrangements are all set, Doctor?"

My heart pounded. What arrangements?

Chapter 2

I leaned against the cool wall, hidden by the doorway' s shadow.

The office door was slightly ajar.

"Yes, Mr. Hayes," another voice replied, smooth and professional. A private physician, by the sound of it. "As we discussed."

Ethan' s voice was low, chillingly calm.

"My son... the one Sarah just delivered. He was struggling, weak. It' s better this way. He needs to pass peacefully."

Pass peacefully?

My blood ran cold. What did he mean?

"There will be no... complications for you, Doctor. Innovatech Solutions is very generous to its friends."

"Understood, Mr. Hayes."

"Jessica Vance' s baby," Ethan continued, "born today, healthy. That child will be presented as ours. As Anson Hayes. My heir."

Jessica? Jessica was pregnant? With Ethan' s child?

The world tilted. I pressed my hand to my mouth to stifle a sob.

This couldn't be happening.

"And Mrs. Hayes?" the doctor asked.

"Ah, yes. Sarah." Ethan' s tone was dismissive. "I have something for her. An experimental drug. I sourced it through... channels. It needs to be administered discreetly. Ensure she can never conceive again. I promised Jessica our child would be my only heir."

He promised Jessica.

My mind reeled. The man I loved, the father of my child, was orchestrating its death, replacing it, and planning to sterilize me.

Because the baby was "weak."

Because of Jessica.

Tears streamed down my face, hot and silent.

My baby, my little fighter, was not weak. Ethan was the monster.

The office door opened. I shrank back further into the shadows.

Ethan and a man in a suit, the doctor, walked out.

Ethan' s face was composed, almost serene.

He didn' t even glance my way.

They walked towards the neonatal unit.

I wanted to scream, to run, to stop them.

But my legs wouldn't move. I was frozen in horror, in disbelief.

My perfect marriage, my loving husband – all a lie.

A devastating, cruel lie.

My baby. He was going to kill our baby.

The image of Ethan, feigning panic at the gala, flashed in my mind.

The rush to this specific private hospital.

It was all planned.

The push on the stairs... was that planned too?

To induce labor early? To have both babies born on the same day?

The thought was too monstrous to bear.

I stumbled back to my room, my body shaking uncontrollably.

The brief hope I' d felt was gone, replaced by a cold, terrifying certainty.

My life was not perfect. It was a nightmare.

And Ethan was the architect of it all.
