Introduction

The air in the Wharton lecture hall was thick with ambition, the final presentation stretching before me, my future almost within reach.

Then, Liam, my childhood friend and the boy everyone expected me to marry, slid a folded note across the table that read: "Ava, will you bear all my failures for me?"

The moment my eyes registered the words, glowing, semi-transparent text, like a Twitch chat, materialized in my vision.

[LOL, the author is starting the 'Fate Swap' plotline.]

[She'll take the fall for Chloe's academic fraud, get expelled from Wharton, and her family will disown her. Total social death.]

[And the best part? Liam, the 'author' , will dump Chloe afterward, claiming he' s heartbroken over Ava' s downfall. He' ll spend the rest of his life 'missing' her, playing the tragic, devoted man. What a psychopath.]

My blood ran cold. Liam? The author? A fate-swapping system?

He watched me, his eyes full of a pleading hope that now seemed monstrous. He thought he was the writer of this story, and I was just a character to be sacrificed.

How could he, the boy I' d known my whole life, see me as nothing more than a pawn in his sick fantasy?

Furious, I picked up my pen, ready to rewrite my own ending.

Chapter 1

The air in the Huntsman Hall lecture room was thick with tension, a mix of ambition and expensive cologne. It was the final presentation for our advanced investment simulation course at Wharton.

Liam, my childhood friend and the boy everyone assumed I' d marry, slid a folded note across the polished table.

His smile was the same one I' d known since we were kids on the Upper East Side, easy and confident.

I unfolded the note. His familiar, elegant handwriting filled the small square of paper.

"Ava, will you bear all my failures for me?"

The moment my eyes registered the words, something impossible happened.

Flickering, semi-transparent text, like a Twitch chat overlay, materialized in my vision.

[LOL, the author is starting the 'Fate Swap' plotline.]

[He' s really asking her. If she says yes, she gets bound to the system.]

Liam. The author? A fate-swapping system?

It was insane, but the chat log kept scrolling, a stream of horrifying spoilers from an invisible audience.

I looked at Liam. He was watching me, his eyes full of a pleading hope that now seemed monstrous. He thought he was the writer of this story, and I was just a character to be sacrificed.

I picked up my pen.

The invisible audience went wild.

[OMG, is she gonna agree? Don' t do it, Ava!]

[She' s too kind. She' s always loved him. She' ll fall for it.]

I met Liam' s gaze, my expression unreadable.

Then, I wrote two words on the note, folded it, and slid it back to him.

He opened it, his smile faltering as he read my reply.

"Go to hell."

Chapter 2

The chat exploded.

[SHE REFUSED! HOLY SHIT!]

[The plot just derailed on page one! The author must be fuming!]

[YES, QUEEN! Don't let that manipulative bastard win!]

Liam' s face went pale. He stared at the note, then at me, a flicker of disbelief and fury in his eyes before he masked it with confusion.

Chloe, sitting beside him, placed a comforting hand on his arm, her expression a perfect mask of innocent concern.

The chat log provided instant context.

[Uh oh, Plan B activated. Since she refused the swap, they' re going straight to the academic frame-up.]

[He' s going to make her the team lead for the final project. Chloe will sabotage the data model the night before submission.]

[Then Liam will go to the professor, all 'heartbroken,' and accuse Ava of data fabrication. It' s an honor code violation. Instant expulsion.]

The professor cleared his throat, calling for team leader nominations.

As if on cue, Liam raised his hand.

"Professor, I nominate Ava. She' s the most qualified among us. We' d all be honored to work under her leadership."

Chloe nodded eagerly, her eyes wide with fake admiration. "I agree. Ava is the best."

The other students murmured in agreement. My academic record was flawless. It was the logical choice.

"Alright, Ms. Thorne," the professor said, smiling. "The floor is yours."

I stood up, my mind racing. They were setting a trap in broad daylight.

"Thank you, Liam, Chloe," I said, my voice steady. "I accept."

I looked directly at them, a cool smile on my face. "And I have a few conditions to ensure our team's success. First, all team meetings will be conducted via Zoom and cloud-recorded to maintain a clear record of our progress. Second, all project files, especially the data model, will be stored on a shared drive with version history enabled. This is for transparency and to protect everyone's contribution."

Liam' s smile tightened at the edges. Chloe' s did not waver.

"Of course, Ava," Liam said smoothly. "Whatever you think is best."

They thought I was just being a diligent, slightly paranoid overachiever.

They had no idea I was reading their script.
