When Silence Roared: A Mother's Escape

Author: : Lan Zhen
Genre: Romance
My life was a constant struggle, cleaning up after Ethan, a musician with "the devil's blood" and a cruel wife, all while trying to save for my son Caleb's therapy. But when Ethan bought his mistress a diamond bracelet with Caleb's therapy savings, then locked my terrified boy in a closet just for her amusement, I knew I was living in hell. The real nightmare began when he dragged Caleb to the edge of a bottomless quarry, threatening to push him, making me believe he was about to murder our child. Saved at the last moment by the Sheriff, Nathaniel, a man rumored to be the sworn enemy of Ethan's family, I thought I'd found sanctuary. But my ex-husband's control, rooted in a terrifying blood pact, threatened to destroy us all, pulling every loved one into his spiral of sadism. Even Nathaniel, my supposed savior, had his own dark secrets, revealed by a chilling recording on what was meant to be my wedding day. His calm dismissal of my pain and his true motives shattered my last ounce of hope. How could the man who rescued my son from the brink of death be using me as a pawn in his own twisted family game, willing to sacrifice my comfort and trust for his ambition? Why did he send my child away right before our ceremony, claiming it was for "safety"? I ripped off the wedding dress. I wasn't just leaving that wedding; I was leaving behind every lie, every manipulation, and redefining what it meant to fight for my son and myself, no matter the cost, no matter the man.

Introduction

Chapter 1

The diamond bracelet on Gabrielle Blakely' s wrist glittered under the cheap fluorescent light of our trailer. It was a cruel star in the cramped, dim space I called home.

That bracelet cost Ethan every dollar I had saved for my son Caleb' s therapy.

He didn't just take the money. He announced it, his voice full of a performer's pride, as if it were a grand romantic gesture instead of a theft from his own child.

"Do you like it, Gabby? It' s for you. Only for you."

Gabrielle, the Sheriff's sister, a woman who dripped wealth and boredom, barely glanced at it. She was more interested in the squalor of our lives. She ran a manicured finger over a dusty shelf, a small, cruel smile playing on her lips.

"It's... quaint, Ethan. So is she."

Her eyes flicked to me. I was standing by the sink, my waitress uniform still smelling of grease and burnt coffee.

I didn't say anything. There was nothing left to say.

Ethan, my Ethan, the man I pulled back from the brink of a fatal overdose, the man bound to me by a blood pact from his strange Appalachian community, just laughed. He was a musician, all charisma and no soul.

He belonged to a reclusive family rumored to have "the devil's blood," a folk tale for what they really were: irresistibly charming, but cold and possessive.

The pact was his idea, a sign of "gratitude," he' d said. It was a curse.

If either of us was unfaithful, the other would be crippled by migraines.

He was desperate to break it.

"She's nothing," Ethan said, his voice loud enough for me and Caleb to hear from the next room. "Her and the kid, they mean nothing to me. You're my future, Gabrielle."

I heard a small whimper from Caleb' s room. My body went rigid.

Gabrielle' s smile widened. "Prove it."

Later, she demanded they have the trailer to themselves. I was supposed to take Caleb and disappear for a few hours. But Caleb was terrified. He wouldn' t leave his room.

So Ethan locked him in the closet.

I heard the click of the lock, then Caleb' s frantic, muffled cries.

"He needs to learn," Ethan said, blocking the door when I tried to get to my son. "Gabrielle wants to see something dramatic. She' s bored."

The sounds from their bedroom started soon after, loud and obscene.

I sat on the floor outside the closet, my hands pressed against the wood, whispering to Caleb that it would be okay, that Mommy was here.

His panic attack was a terrible, silent thing. He just stopped making noise, his small body frozen in the dark.

When Ethan finally let him out, Caleb was limp, his face pale and streaked with tears. Ethan didn't even look at him. He was too busy looking at Gabrielle.

"Is that dramatic enough for you?" he asked her, a pleading in his voice.

Gabrielle looked at Caleb, then at me. Her eyes were cold, assessing.

"No," she said. "I have a better idea."

That' s how we ended up at the old quarry. The place was a local legend, a sheer drop into black, bottomless water. Ethan dragged Caleb by the arm to the very edge.

"Watch this, Gabby," he called over his shoulder. He pushed Caleb forward, his small sneakers skidding on the loose gravel. "One little push, and all my problems are gone."

Caleb didn't scream. He just looked at me, his eyes wide with a terror so profound it stole his breath.

My world shattered. In that moment, the man I once loved, the father of my child, became a monster.

Chapter 2

"ETHAN, NO!"

My scream was swallowed by the wind. I scrambled forward, my only thought to put my body between my son and the abyss.

But Ethan just laughed, a wild, ugly sound. He held Caleb over the edge, enjoying the spectacle of my terror for Gabrielle' s amusement.

My mind went blank. If Caleb went over, I was going with him. There was no life for me after that. I took a running start, not to save him, but to join him.

A strong arm wrapped around my waist, yanking me back so hard the air left my lungs.

"Sylvia, stop!"

The voice was deep and steady. I twisted, my heart hammering against my ribs, and saw the grim, familiar face of Sheriff Nathaniel Blakely.

He had one arm around me, holding me tight, and the other was already reaching for his radio. But before he could call for backup, he moved. He was fast, faster than I thought possible. In a few long strides, he was at the edge. He didn't waste time talking. He just grabbed Caleb, pulling him away from Ethan with a strength that was absolute.

Caleb clung to him, burying his face in the Sheriff's uniform.

Ethan stumbled back, his face a mask of shock and fury. "What the hell, Blakely? This is a family matter."

Nathaniel didn't even look at him. His focus was entirely on Caleb, then on me. His eyes were dark with a concern that felt ancient and deep.

Caleb, still shaking, looked up at the Sheriff. His voice was a tiny whisper.

"Can you be my new dad?"

The question hung in the air, a child's desperate plea for safety. I started to cry, silent, racking sobs of relief and despair. I looked at Nathaniel, this man who was the sworn enemy of Ethan's community, and saw the only hope I had left.

I nodded. "Yes, Caleb. Yes."

"What?" Gabrielle shrieked, her face contorted with rage. She lunged at me, her nails out like claws. "You bitch!"

Nathaniel moved without hesitation, shielding me with his own body. Her blow landed squarely on his back. He didn't even flinch. He just pushed me gently behind him, a solid wall between me and the chaos.

The stress was too much. The world tilted, and everything went black.

I woke up in the clinic. The first person I saw was Ethan. He was leaning over me, his face a twisted mix of anger and something else, something calculating.

"You fainted," he said, his voice low. "Is it because you're pregnant with his kid? Is that why the pact is killing me?" He clutched his head, feigning a migraine.

I just stared at him, numb.

"I already told Gabrielle," he continued, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "She was so worried. She even suggested a little home remedy her family knows. To... take care of the problem."

My blood ran cold.

Then the door opened, and Nathaniel walked in. He ignored Ethan completely. He came to my bedside, his expression full of a quiet, respectful concern.

"Sylvia," he said softly. "I've arranged a safe place for you and Caleb to stay. My home. Please, let me help." He hesitated, then added, "I've wanted to for a long time. Ever since the first time I had to answer a call at your trailer."

He had been watching over me, from a distance, all this time.
