Author: : Xiao Ye
Genre: Modern
My life was supposed to be a dream, a bright future with my husband Andrew, leaving my wealthy Napa Valley life behind for love. But our condo fell through, leaving me, a six-month pregnant woman, stuck in my in-laws' cramped, stale house. That Black Friday, my mother-in-law Maria, obsessed with a TV, used my pregnant belly as a battering ram in a store, live-streaming my humiliation. The video went viral, branding me an "entitled Karen," costing me my job, and leading to ceaseless online attacks. When I collapsed in agony, fearing miscarriage, Andrew just turned over and went to sleep, while Maria called me a "drama queen." His father then suggested a divorce, saying my tarnished reputation would hurt Andrew's career, and Andrew nodded in agreement. My baby was gone, lost because Maria actively sabotaged my birth control and then shoved me, and Andrew abandoned me in my darkest hour. Did they truly believe they could destroy me and get away with it, simply because I chose love over my family' s wealth? They thought my family' s reputation was my greatest weakness, but they were wrong. I let them move into my family's guesthouse, watched their greed, and meticulously planned how I would dismantle their world, piece by piece.

Introduction

My life was supposed to be a dream, a bright future with my husband Andrew, leaving my wealthy Napa Valley life behind for love.

But our condo fell through, leaving me, a six-month pregnant woman, stuck in my in-laws' cramped, stale house.

That Black Friday, my mother-in-law Maria, obsessed with a TV, used my pregnant belly as a battering ram in a store, live-streaming my humiliation.

The video went viral, branding me an "entitled Karen," costing me my job, and leading to ceaseless online attacks.

When I collapsed in agony, fearing miscarriage, Andrew just turned over and went to sleep, while Maria called me a "drama queen."

His father then suggested a divorce, saying my tarnished reputation would hurt Andrew's career, and Andrew nodded in agreement.

Chapter 1

The air in my in-laws' house was always stale, a mix of old cigarette smoke and Maria' s cheap air freshener. It was a smell I could never get used to, a constant reminder that this wasn't my life. My real life was back in Napa, in a sprawling house that smelled of oak barrels and blooming roses.

But I had left that life for Andrew. For love.

I sat on the lumpy couch, my six-month pregnant belly a tight drum under my thin sweater. We were supposed to be in our own condo by now, a bright, airy space with a nursery I' d already designed in my head. But the developer went bankrupt, and our down payment vanished along with our dream. So here we were, stuck in this cramped, suffocating house with his parents.

"Gabrielle! Get your coat!"

Maria, my mother-in-law, burst into the living room, her face flushed with excitement. She worked as a cashier at a big-box store, and Black Friday was her Super Bowl.

"It's almost four a.m. We have to go now if we want to get that TV."

I didn't want the TV. I didn't want to be awake at four a.m., and I certainly didn't want to fight a mob of shoppers. I just wanted to sleep.

"Maria, I'm really not feeling well," I said, trying to keep my voice even. "My back is killing me."

She waved a dismissive hand. "Nonsense. A little walk will do you good. Andrew needs that TV for his man cave when we get the new house."

There was no new house. There was only this one, and Andrew didn't have a man cave. He had a corner of the garage filled with old tires.

"Andrew can go," I suggested, my patience wearing thin.

"Don't be ridiculous. He needs his sleep. He has a big day at the dealership tomorrow. You're not working, what else do you have to do?"

Before I could protest further, she grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the door. Her grip was surprisingly strong.

"Come on. Don't be lazy. You need to contribute."

The line outside the store was a chaotic snake of shivering people. The energy was frantic, aggressive. I clutched my belly, trying to shield it from the jostling crowd.

Maria, however, was in her element. When the doors were finally unlocked, she didn't just join the stampede; she created her own path.

She shoved me forward, using my pregnant body like a battering ram.

"Excuse me! Pregnant lady coming through! Make way!" she yelled, her voice shrill and commanding.

People turned, their expressions a mixture of annoyance and pity. I felt my face burn with shame.

"Maria, please, stop," I whispered, trying to pull back.

She ignored me, pushing me harder. "My son is a top salesman! He's going to be a manager soon! We need this for our grandbaby's future!"

A woman in front of us sneered. "Yeah, I'm sure a 4K TV is essential for a newborn."

Maria rounded on her. "You have a problem? This is my grandson in here! A boy! We paid for the special ultrasound to make sure. He deserves the best!"

The lie was so blatant, so absurd, that I just froze. We hadn't had any special ultrasound. We didn't even know the gender.

The argument exploded. Voices rose, accusations flew. Someone pulled out their phone and started recording. I could see the red light, a malevolent eye capturing my deepest humiliation.

"Look at this psycho Karen using a pregnant woman to cut the line!" a teenager shouted, aiming his phone directly at us.

The world started to spin. I felt a hundred pairs of eyes on me, judging me, hating me. All I wanted was to disappear. I stumbled back, away from Maria, away from the yelling, and ran as fast as my swollen ankles would carry me, the sound of the jeering crowd chasing me all the way to the car.

Chapter 2

By the time I got back to the house, the video was already viral.

"Karen-in-Training Forcibly Uses Pregnant Daughter-in-Law as Human Shield for Doorbuster TV."

The title was brutal. The comments were worse.

They found my name, my job, my social media. My face was everywhere, a meme for entitled, obnoxious behavior. I was doxxed, torn apart by strangers who knew nothing about me.

My phone buzzed relentlessly with hateful notifications. Then, an email from my boss.

"Gabrielle, given the current situation and the negative attention it has brought to our firm, we have to let you go. We wish you the best."

Just like that, my job was gone. My career, which I' d carefully built to seem modest and unassuming, was destroyed over a TV I never even wanted.

I was staring at the termination email when Andrew came into the bedroom. He didn' t look at me. He was pacing, running a hand through his hair.

"They're talking about it at work, Gabby. My boss saw the video. He thinks it reflects poorly on the dealership."

My head snapped up. "It reflects poorly on the dealership? Andrew, your mother assaulted me in public, I was humiliated on the internet, and I just lost my job. And you're worried about your boss?"

"What was I supposed to do?" he shot back, his voice defensive. "You know how Mom gets. You should have just stayed home if you didn't want to go."

"I tried! She dragged me out of the house!"

"Well, you should have tried harder!"

The injustice of it all choked me. I was the victim here, and he was blaming me.

As our argument grew louder, I saw a shadow move under the door. I ripped it open. Maria was standing there, her ear pressed against the wood, a smug look on her face.

"Spying on us, Maria?" I asked, my voice dripping with ice.

"I have a right to know what's happening in my own house," she sniffed. "Especially now that you're a freeloader. No job, just a baby on the way. A burden."

"A burden?" I shrieked, the word hitting me like a physical blow. "This is your grandchild!"

Andrew's father, a quiet man who usually stayed out of our fights, appeared in the hallway. He looked tired.

"That's enough," he said, his voice heavy. He looked from me to Andrew. "Son, maybe... maybe a divorce is for the best. Her reputation is tarnished now. It could hurt your career permanently. You need to think about your future."

I stared at him, my heart stopping. He was suggesting they throw me away like a piece of trash.

I turned to Andrew, expecting, pleading for him to defend me, to defend our marriage.

He wouldn't meet my eyes. He just looked at the floor and nodded slowly.

"Dad's right," he mumbled. "Maybe it is for the best."

The floor fell out from under me. The three of them stood there, a united front, and I was completely, utterly alone. The pain was so intense, so devastating, it felt like my entire world had just shattered into a million pieces.
