AUTHOR'S POV
At this point, she did not know what to do. 'Should I think about myself or should my mother be my priority?' Jani gave thought and took a left turn, her mother was her priority.
The closer to the residence she got, the more scared she was as events of some other nights ago kept torturing her. How could her father see her as a woman? 'Maybe it's just because he came home totally wasted.' She tried to convince herself but everything did not just add up.
Jani could not help but grasp tightly the hem of her elegant dress when the image of a dying woman came to haunt her.
She remembered how the woman died at the hands of Jin Daven, her father. An enemy of the government, a master of the underworld who operated underworld casinos and dealt with organ transplant businesses.
The woman was executed for digging deeper into Jin's true identity and what he does to earn a living. His real identity Thomas Kyle and not Jin Daven as they had known earlier was brought to light by the lady who's no more.
Jani remembered how the woman was forced to swallow a liquid and later fell petrified on the floor after a lot of struggling. "Help me, go get me some water." The woman had pleaded for mercy but her father's cold eyes rooted her on the ground.
Even if she wanted to, where on earth would she get the water from? The place looked more like a human butchery where blood was the only liquid.
How she wished she dared to go against her father at the moment but here she was, yet another victim Jin had preyed on.
She mustered the little courage within her and trespassed her way into the isolated residence that housed no human apart from Jin. This is exactly what Jin had done to them, hide them from the human world or rather species.
"Hey, where do you think you're going?" Jani tensed the moment she heard Roshan their gatekeeper rush towards her direction. "Sorry young master." He stood still, hands akimbo immediately he saw Jani. "You can have your way in." He said motioning her to take the right direction which she did. She'd been caught anyway.
"Mother am here, I was unable to leave without you. How can I leave you in the hands of that monster?" She asked in between her sobs.
Mrs Daven was shocked and scared. She had already contacted the police after managing to get a hold of Jin's mobile phone simply because her daughter was out of the picture.
"Darling, why are you here? You should be somewhere closer to City A by now." She inquired not hiding her disappointment. Miss Daven checked the wall clock one last time. "Anyway it's not too late for you to leave, your father is not coming back anytime soon. He should be out there taking more lives." She said holding Jani's hand and taking her towards the door.
Before she could open the door, she turned to look at her daughter one last time. She'd sensed danger. Jin's alarm sounded which meant he was closer to the residence.
"Darling you can no longer leave this place safely, your father is around. Promise to not disappoint me this time."
"I'll do anything, mother." Miss Daven was satisfied, she was sure that once a promise always a promise. That was the daughter she raised.
"Promise me that you'll stay silent wherever I take you and that you won't show up no matter what." She said looking straight into her eyes.
"Even if he kills you?" She asked dissatisfied with her promise earlier.
"Even if he kills me." She answered firmly after all that's what Jin would do to her if the authorities didn't arrive on time. His presence here at this hour meant no good at all.
"Take this card, use it to set yourself free if anything happens to me. Run away as far as possible and avoid your father completely. Survive at all costs, do not let them near you neither should you give them a chance to figure out who you are."
She placed the card on the tile-like floor which was the passage to an underground secret room. She noticed its presence the day Jin had returned home drenched in blood and later confirmed that it was human blood.
She kept the secret room as a secret known only to herself. She locked the room once Jani was out of sight.
**********************
BOOM!
The door opened with a loud thud and Jin dashed in fuming in rage. "Now tell me where that f*king daughter of a bitch is." She had to play along, she was sure Roshan would never tell Jin of Jani's whereabouts after she'd asked him not to, so playing innocent was all she could do.
"I swear I don't know darling, wait have you not seen her yourself?" She asked looking so concerned about the situation at hand.
Jani watched the conversation through the computer in the underground room. So a mafia-like Jin could also be played he didn't even notice a series of CCTV cameras inside his home.
"Do not dare play damp with me woman." He said in greeted teeth. "Or do you perhaps think I would not find out that you've reported me to the authority? Oh! come on you know me better than anyone else Barbra." He smirked.
Yeah of course she knew him better than anyone else. She knew this was her final day on planet earth and what hurt her the most was that her daughter would see everything. How she wished she had destroyed the CCTV cameras earlier. Will her daughter be able to escape the trauma of witnessing her death?
"I loved you, but you failed me, you failed to be the woman for me. Please be reborn in the next as my mother." Jin said hugging his wife into a tight embrace. " Seems that's the only role that suits you perfectly." He inserted a knife deep into her belly.
"I-Iam p-p-reg-nant." Barbra managed to stammer the words out. Maybe this would work? Jin let go immediately, he felt guilty about everything. Guilty for leaving his phone with his wife, guilty for showing his true colors to his family. And guilty that he would do nothing else apart from executing every threat when it came to business.
"Y-you can't do this to me Jin we're family remember." She said in between her sobs.
"Did it not cross your mind that we're family before turning me in? Why didn't you think about our unborn child before exposing me?" He was even more confused now.
'Should he take the risk? but how could he? He was not ready to be the shameful heir of the Kyle family nor a reason for his father's failure in the business world.
"Wait are you even telling the truth? Or perhaps are you trying to trick my mind into going easy on you?" Miss Daven who was in a terrible state dropped a pregnancy test kit. "I am not lying Thomas." She said coughing out blood.
Jin was even more confused and shocked at the same time. Did she just call him by his real name? Should he just let go of everything, surrender, and give his family space to live? What if they hated him more than he thought? Would he have a home to embrace once out of prison?
"I wish I never met you, Barbra, meeting you has been my greatest weakness which am more than willing to get rid of this instant." Of course his downfall was never going to be caused by a woman, so he ought to do the necessary.
He repeated his actions again and again this time stabbing different areas. "Tell our child that I love him but he or she was equally a threat to me." He kissed his wife on the lips not caring about the blood. That was to be their last intimate time together.
Jin took his cell phone and dialed a number which connected immediately. "Clean this mess." Came his short and precise order as he went upstairs to clean himself. Jani quickly closed her eyes to avoid her father's naked body, after all, he was still her father no matter the circumstances. A part of him still existed in her which is why she ought to remind him in case he forgot.
She had to remind him that as his daughter, she knew everything he knew and could do everything he did much better than he did. According to Jani, she was just his reincarnation in a different gender, a part of him and that's all, it was high time she stepped in and stopped her father's thirst for money, power, and bloodshed.
Jin who was done cleaning himself left as two men in black entered carrying a lifeless body. Jani was quick to detect Roshan their gatekeeper. Jin was indeed undoubtedly clever, he left no trace of his crime behind. Roshan being an eye witness was his fate to be executed as well.
Jani struggled to read her mother's lips in motion, it seemed she had something to confess. "Dar-ling am sorry I can't be with y-you any longer. Please survive and avoid Jin. H- he - s i-s." And with this, she could utter no other words but only looked at the precious blue jade in her tender fingers as tears kept on flowing freely. Jani understood what she meant by that and quickly set herself free to go for the jade.
She was shocked to find that the house was on fire, no wonder everything was unclear at the moment. Jani took the jade from her mother, kissed her the final goodbye, and returned to her hiding spot. That was one of the things her mother treasured apart from her. It was the precious gift from the first and only man he loved in the entire universe.
She stayed in hiding until everything became calm and clear. Jani left the hiding spot safely and looked at the place that used to be her home for ten years. She cried bitterly seeing the ashes from the spot where her mother lay before complete distraction. Jani took some ashes with her and left to find refuge.
'Here she is boss, I found her at last.' Someone sent a text to Jin Daven who was after his final hunt. 'You have two minutes to bring her to me alive, use the arrows I gave you.' Came his short reply. He would keep her daughter and train her as he'd always done, after all, she was his flesh and blood. He would just be confused into depending fully on him.
Jani was hunted like a wild dog but thanks to her athlete's heart trained for endurance she was at an advantage. It's a good thing that Jin had trained her and it proved to be helpful, especially at such a time.
'You guys should leave that area, you're surrounded. Use the secret exit area.' Jin texted after being warned by his secret informer in the police department.
"Are you guys sure the arrows did not miss?" Jin asked for the third time in confirmation.
"Very certain sir the results are positive." One replied. "I saw it too boss " The second one said confidentiality. Jin Daven smiled triumphantly.
"Then there's no reason to worry. Even if she survives that shot, she would come in search of me." He was indeed a devil in a sheepskin. Was Jani his daughter to begin with?
Jani who'd been shot tried her best to get rid of the arrows but the pain was too much for her to bear and in the end, she could only break the arrows and stagger her way out of her hiding spot.
Jani was soaked in her blood, her feet became heavy and could no longer move. In the end, she fell unconscious on the cold ground.
TESA'S POV
As a detective, immediately I received orders from my superiors, and my team and I set out for the search journey. The tracking device was no longer detected but still, we had to keep up the search.
I wonder if the woman meant her words that human trafficking and organ transplant syndicates resided within these walls one of which is her husband. It could also be one of the pranks we receive daily but still, we had to dig deeper into the premises and know who exactly resides in it.
Our team's driving force was the fact that we'd never failed in any mission and this would not be our first.
"Slow down," I ordered seeing a lifeless body, a young girl of around six years of age or so. Checking her pulse rate I knew something could be done but again it could be pointless, still, I had to try.
"Continue the search," I ordered taking another vehicle. Like a mad woman, I drove off towards the nearest hospital. 'Oh! how unlucky of you young girl.' I thought inwardly seeing the closest hospital facility.
A hospital owned by the Lee's, the hospital that was so biased and only accepted the first class patients.
"Hospital bills on me," I said and left, at least that was the best I could do to save the child's life.
************
Meanwhile, Old Mrs Lee who was surveying the hospital came into the room housing the almost lifeless girl. It was Jani's third day in that facility and the doctors had noticed something completely off with her system.
Doctor Hilary had noticed a strange virus residing within her body though young, almost lifeless, and still liquid. His final stand was Jani's transfer to Paris Lee's bigger facility. He equally wanted to learn something new so the poor child would only be a specimen.
Old Mrs Lee looked at the girl and something displayed at the back of her mind. She quickly opened the white sheets covering her body and what she saw could not be a coincidence.
The same star-shaped mark with a blue color at the same point? Her ankle. Quickly she took out her phone, took a picture of the girl and the mark, and sent it to her son Seok.
She'd always been living in regret of her past mistakes and maybe that was her only way to correct her mistakes.
Jani at the back of her left eye managed to see everything. A woman in her forties or so taking a photo of her. Was she one of Jin's men? She knew her life was at risk whenever she went with such an identity. What was she to do anyway? She was bound to die some time to come right?
She was on the verge of giving up until her mother's image was displayed in her mind. The woman who loved unconditionally, the woman who gave up on her own precious life to save hers.
The woman who died trying to save many. Her mother's words were displayed in her mind. "Survive, don't ever let them near you, don't let them figure out who you are, live a longer life than mine darling. Don't let him win this battle ever.'
A drop of tear fell from her eyes and she could feel the woman wipe them off. Wait why would she do that? She was ever certain that whoever knew her worked for her father.
She could hear the woman's footsteps fade gradually and she opened her eyes something popping into her mind. The instincts on self-defense. How she wanted to survive and accomplish her mother's mission.
She would not let Jin get away with what he did, he would testify against him and ensure he paid for every single crime of his.
Getting rid of the oxygen mask from her nose, Jani removed the hospital pipes and drips connected to her body. She knew it was risky because her wounds were yet to heal and her body was yet to fully recover but she didn't give a shit. Survival was all that mattered the most.
For he, or she would rather die a fated early death trying to survive the cruel world than stay there and wait to die being yet another victim of Jin's greed.
Stepping her foot down, "Oh! crap." She whispered, her feet felt numb and hard to control but she had to force them.
"Don't be useless dammit, well unless you want to be buried six feet underground." She muttered in greeted teeth struggling to walk outside the facility.
All front doors were guarded, safer to use the back door exit. Luckily it was already late and darkness had befallen the entire area. Jani tiptoed her way outside carefully and boom she found herself in a very deserted territory.
Some rentals that housed humanity. How she wanted to change. Walking further around the area, she came across a wireline, on it was a variety of clothes. Probably someone who worked overtime?
That was not her problem, she took a white buggy shirt and a black buggy pants which she quickly changed and vacated the area.
Walking down the streets, her feet felt numb and her vision was almost blurry, all she needed was a cool place to rest.
Jani spotted a cave in the opposite direction, for her gender it was risky to be outside at such a time but did that matter? She was like a homeless stray cat roaming around the streets with nowhere to go and no one to call family.
The insides of the cave were scary and she found somewhere comfortable to rest her head.
The chatter of birds and several cock craws reminded her that it was morning, yet another day to wander around the streets like the stray cat she was.
Her eyes opened and closed. Her body shook uncomfortably, fear taking control over her. Was that the place she slept the entire night? Was that beast her comfortable bed till morning?
Her eyes opened to meet a huge scary snake. The snake was equally staring at her trying to figure out something it seemed not to have figured out.
Jani opened her eyes slowly in confirmation of what she'd seen earlier and boom, the creature's ocean-blue eyes met with hers. Jani was scared but at the same time felt some warmth from within the creature's eyes.
Slowly the huge snake began to circle itself from her body until she was free. Walking away, Jani wondered why shit didn't happen, she was to be dead by then. Why the heck didn't she get bitten by the snake?
Jani's POV
I walked out of the cage and toward who knew where. I discovered a specific store after walking a few miles away. It was fancy inside, with all the interior fittings made of glass.
I was able to see a beautiful reflection of myself. Except for my long, untidy black hair, I looked like a dude.
Given my outfit's odd silhouette, I reasoned that nobody who knew Jani or Barbra would be able to identify me, especially with my hair chopped off.
"Pardon me, ma'am. Could I please have some pounds so I can buy water? I am extremely thirsty." For the first time in my life, I begged, and fortunately, the woman gave me some weight without asking me who I was. After saying thank you, I went into an untidy, old barbershop to get my hair cut.
I looked at a few sketches and pictures in different styles before selecting one. I was positive that everyone would never recognize me as a girl and that it would look amazing on me.
"Finished." I turned to face the mirror after hearing his voice. Whoa, I looked nothing like the Jani I knew; my hair was all put up and stylish, and I followed a dress code that made it obvious that I was a boy.
For some reason, as soon as I left the barbershop, I felt strange and uneasy. I was aware of an odd sensation moving through my body, but I was able to push it to the back of my consciousness as I considered what my mother had said.
I had to make sure I abided by those principles. I would not let anyone close to me, and I would not let anyone discover my true identity. As I ventured deeper into the streets, I came across several other homeless stray cats who shared my circumstances.
Competing for leftovers in the trash cans. I was so hungry, but I would not give in to my hunger-after all, I did not have a choice. When I joined the team, they naturally had to start a fight with me.
"What the hell are you doing here, and who the heck are you? Son of a wealthy scoundrel." One of them stated that he forced me to fall on my butt by placing his hands firmly on my chest.
"Homeless Ma f*ker son of a bitch." Another guy, not the first one, said while passing the others a bottle that he was sniffing. He took a step closer, pulling his shirt over his arm.
He lifted me by my collar, reaching so close that my eyes met his. Was I that small and feeble? He mentioned something that genuinely resonated with me.
Did he just call me a son of a bitch, implying that he mistreated my mother? My mind was in a state of chaos, but I could not do anything because I was so weak and useless at the time. He is far too small to fight a boy his age.
Besides, I could not just let that go; I had to do something, but what? I wondered, and thanks to a small boy standing beside him holding a stone, I grabbed it, and the spot was bloody in the blink of an eye.
I did not just hit him; I intended to mark him. His forehead was left with a mark that I would recognize even if it was ten or twenty years later.
I knew his friends would beat the crap out of me, even to the point of death, so I had to save myself as soon as possible.
"Help, somebody, help," I yelled as I ran away, and a black Rolls Royce stopped in front of me. A man in his late twenties or early thirties stepped out, only to be met by the sight of me being chased by a swarm of homeless kids.
"Hop in." I could not trust him, he said, pointing to the back seat, but I did not have a choice. Rethinking my decision was pointless.
The black elegant vehicle came to a halt in an area that appeared more dangerous than my residential home jail. The area was dark due to the numerous tree species, both short and tall, providing a distinct outline since most firmed canopies. The area was so quiet that it appeared to be devoid of humans.
What had become of her? Would she die if she kept falling from the frying pan into the direct fire?
"Why did you bring me here?" Jani asked, struggling to keep her fears hidden. "Call me Luca's, how about you?" He asked, and I summoned all my confidence to say whatever I wanted to say.
"My name is Tommy, and you can refer to me as the homeless stray cat." He smiled as he held some strands of my hair. The tranquillity was enhanced by a cool breeze blowing through us.
**************
"Tommy, you are no longer a stray cat because I will provide you with the home you crave." Lucas smiled, a little relieved. All of the children his wife saw at every orphanage were not to her liking, so he hoped she liked this one because he did find him lovable.
"As we drove on, the serenity became more cool, beautiful, and peaceful." If his wife finally agrees to keep this one, he will train him to be exactly what he wants him to be. If she says no after the trial, he will have to put him in with other kids for training.
'Bruh.' What was the matter with his wife? As usual, she had plenty of reasons to reject someone as her child. He remembered the last time they went to the orphanage and the strange reasons she gave for rejecting every single child.
// I dislike his nose because it is crooked. His legs are bowed, which is a big no-no. I dislike blue eyes; I can gaze at the sky whenever I want. Why does he have such a big tummy? That is not something I intend to keep.
Those and many more reasons she gave made the none in those orphanages not give her a kid for adoption so there was no way we would be allowed to any orphanage. Most people believe she will end up mistreating the child. //
*********
I saw him remove me from that massive mansion-like structure after a woman probably younger than her examined me.
"He would look great on a woman, and I do not like brown eyes." I was perplexed as to why she said she despised brown eyes when her own were brown. Was the lady insane? I wondered, but there had to be something wrong with her.
I walked into what appeared to be a camp. A living space for more than one person. Lucas looked at me, struggling to say whatever he wanted to say.
"Here, survival is for the fittest; this is where you can call home, Tommy; remember, it could also be an opportunity to transform your life if you are open to change." It is the same point at which I began my life.
Lucas said, wiping away a tear. He remembered how he lost his ability to procreate, and now he was putting a young man in the same situation. "Please come out on top." He finally let go. All he did was his job, which was to bring in new inmates. He knew if he didn't, the story would be different.
He took my hand in his and handed me over to someone I had never met before. "Goodbye." He said this as the door in front of him closed, separating the two strangers.
When I turned around, his face reminded me more of a gorilla than a human. Was it old age? s*t his face resembled a gorilla more than a human. Was it old age perhaps?
