I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a baby picture of me that my parents kept hidden. My parents lied to me, I have a twin brother. I sat on my bed staring at the picture. How could they do this to us? I sat there for what felt like hours staring at the picture. I jumped as my mom opened my door. I tried to hide the picture but it was too late she saw it.
"Why didn't you tell me?!" I demanded as she sighed.
"To protect him," my mom said as I frowned.
"I don't believe you!" I yelled as she frowned.
"I don't care if you don't believe me but you won't speak of this to anyone!" She snapped ripping the photo from my hand. I got up following her down stares when I saw Benard the Alpha. I quickly ducked as my mom handed me the picture. She smiled at him as he looked at her. "What are you doing here?"
"I heard that you know when one or both of the Lycans are," he said as her smile vanished.
"I'm sorry but that's not true," she said as they tensed. I felt his anger and impatience.
"If you don't tell me I will take you before the pack and kill you, your husband and little Sarah," he growled as she flinched.
"I don't know what you're talking about!" She yelled as he grabbed her throat. I gasped wanting desperately to help her but I knew that I couldn't. I snuck back into my room. I shut the door carefully. I grabbed my phone texting my dad to warn him to stay away. I touched my necklace wishing I could use it to help but she wouldn't let me. I know that I need to find my brother to help him and if I helped her I might never find him. I heard her screams and I knew then she was being killed.
"Easton you must find them. You are the only one strong enough to kill them!" Benard snapped hanging up his phone. I felt hot tears rushing down my face as I slid under my bed. I held my breath as Benard ran through the house. He walked into my room opening the closet. "I know you are here Sarah come out and I won't hurt you." I paused before deciding my only chance was to come out. He has no idea I'm the powerful Lycan thanks to my mother. She taught me to turn on a full moon and to be careful turning when it wasn't a full moon. She also showed me how to hold back my strength.
"Benard please don't hurt me," I stuttered as he smirked. He walked forward touching my golden hair as he circled me.
"I want you to join my guard," he said causing me to frown.
"I'm only seventeen," I whispered as he laughed.
"So you are one of the best fighters in the pack. Only you could beat my beta," he said as I contemplated what to do.
"Fine but only if you spare my father," I said firmly pressing my lips into a tight line.
"Deal now lets go," he said grabbing my arm pulling me downstairs. He dragged me toward his jeep pushing me into the passenger seat. He spread to his house which was more like a fortress. He drove inside parking next to his beta who happens to be his wife.
"Where do I change into proper guard attire?" I asked as he motioned a guard over. I gulped knowing staying here was a huge risk for my safety. If even one person saw my birthmark
they would know. The birthmark was shaped like a wolf head and it was on my left shoulder blade.
"Nate will show you," Benard said walking away from me. I got out of the jeep following Nate. He had piercing blue eyes and dark hair. He handed me a black tank top with black tight pants to put on with black combat boots. I grabbed a black thin jacket pulling it on. I couldn't help but laugh at their color choice.
"Nate what do I do all day?" I asked walking out of the bathroom.
"Shadow his wife," Nate said causing me to walk into the main house to find Issabelle. I wondered around until I found Benard and Issabelle in the library. I felt my anxiety spike as I realized they were researching the Gemini Lycans. I stood against the wall near another guard as they read book after book.
"Are you sure no one in the pack had twins?" Issabelle asked causing Benard to face me.
"Sarah do you know who had twins?" He asked and I could see he was going to analyze my answer.
"No sir, if I had I would tell you," I said firmly hoping he couldn't tell I was lying.
"See no one knows of any twins in the pack," he said as Issabelle returned to her book.
"Hey I found something," she said turning the book around. "It's a knife that can only injury a Gemini Lycan."
"I've seen this before," he said his eyes snapping to mine. "At Sarah's house!"
"Sir I can go get it if you like," I said softly hoping he wouldn't test it on me.
"Take Nate with you," he said as I walked down the stairs and through the courtyard. I found Nate calling to him.
"We are going to my place to get a special knife for Benard," I said as he tossed me a set of keys. "We taking the motorcycles?"
"Yes now let's go," he said leading me to the bikes. I hoped on staring it up. I put a helmet on racing out of the compound. My hair whipped behind me as we sped toward my house. I stopped hoping off the bike rushing into the house pausing at the sight of my mother staring blankly at me. I took a breath before walking into my mother's room grabbing the knife careful not to touch the blade. I walked over to Nate handing it to him.
"Here it is," I said getting back on the bike. As I drove I thought of running but continued to the compound. I had no escape from my current situation and I had no clue how I was going to save myself from this...
I arrived back at the house to find my father arguing with Benard inside the front door. I jumped off the bike rushing up the steps and inside the house without delay.
"Dad stop!" I said jumping in front of him holding him away from Benard.
"No you are too young to be in the guard. I won't allow you to stay here," he said as I glanced at Benard who to my surprise was smiling. He wanted my father angry so he would do something to get himself killed. He wanted a reason to question him about the Gemini Lycans.
"Dad this is the only way to keep you safe," I whispered as he stiffened. "Mom's dead."
"Buttercup this isn't the place for you," he whispered when Nate rushed over handing the knife to Benard. Nate glanced at my father his posture shifting to defensive. He could tell my father was a threat. Benard held it up inspecting the blade. In a flash the blade was in motion as he tried to stab my father. I gasped as worry flooded through my system. I sighed with relief when nothing happened to my father. He didn't even have a scratch on him. I knew how the knife worked in theory but I didn't think the rumors were true.
"Damn it you promised you wouldn't hurt him. You had no idea if that knife would hurt him," I snapped as my father pulled me away from Benard.
"Calm down," he whispered in my ear causing me to take a breath.
"I had to test it on someone," he said before my father stepped in front of me. If my father did anything else to protect me it would tip Benard off. He would know something was off.
"Benard if I find out that you got my daughter killed through being a part of the guard I'll come after you with everything fiber of my being even if I have to track down the Gemini Lycans myself," he growled his eyes full of his Lycan rage.
"Are you threatening me old man?" Benard said baring his teeth. I felt his alpha powers flush through the entire room as he glaring into my father's unyielding gaze.
"Dad please don't," I said with tears swimming in my chocolate eyes. He stepped back facing me. He cupped my face in his hands with sadness in his dark eyes.
"Be safe," he said kissing my forehead before fleeing from the room. I gasped as a single tear slipped down my face. I quickly wiped it away before facing Benard.
"Because of your father you will be going with Easton to hunt the Gemini Lycans at the end of this month," Benard snapped thrusting the knife into my hand. I began to panic at the thought of the knife blade touching my hand. I quickly put the knife away before following Issabelle up to her study. I got a hold of myself as I caught up to Issabelle. I stood at the top of the staircase speaking to Issabelle.
"Miss would you like me to wait in the study or in the hall?" I asked respectfully bowing my head.
"In the study," she said as I stepped into the grand study. I looked around the spacious room with dark wood floors with a roaring fireplace. The desk sat in the middle of the room with chair scattered around the room. I leaned against the wall next to the door as she sat at her desk with piles of books on the Gemini Lycans.
"You have done so much research on them," I gasped causing her to laugh.
"They are dangerous. Everything I have found shows that they have mood swings that can kill anyone in the pack. They can't always control the power they possess. My uncle was killed by a Gemini Lycan before I was born," Issabelle said as pain flashed in her eyes her smile fading with each word. In her eyes I could see the anger dancing with the sadness.
"I'm sorry he died," I whispered somehow blaming myself. I hadn't killed him in fact I hadn't even been born yet but I still felt like it was my fault.
"It's in the past," she said turning back to her book. "This book says we can track them. Easton is our best tracker we just need to explain to him what they smell like."
"Wouldn't they all smell different?" I asked fear rushing through my blood.
"Yes but they still smell like Lycans just much concentrated," Issabelle said as I walked over sitting across from her.
"Can I help?" I asked my curiosity peaked by this new knowledge.
"Sure," she said handing me a book. I flipped through it before finding an old legend about the Gemini Lycans. It says that the Gemini Lycans used to rule the packs and there was peace. Are Issabelle and Benard ignoring this?
"It says they used to rule and there wasn't war," I said as her eyes locked on mine. I could see a fear sparkling in her green eyes.
"The legend is irrelevant," she said as I nodded pretending like I believed her. I turned back to my book as I continued reading. My interest peaked once again by a line that two alphas mated to create the power concentration to create the Gemini Lycans. And Gemini Lycans are descendants of the strongest union allowed in any pack to date. I paused when I found the real reason we are now hunted. We had a birthright to become alphas. I shut the book shaking my head.
"Nothing useful," I sighed standing up. I walked over to the wall standing against it once more. "I hope you kill them." I lied in the hopes of gaining her trust.
"We will," she smiled as she continued her research. I thought of my brother out there alone and now in very real danger. He needed my help and soon if he is to survive.
"Sarah go and train with Easton. He wants to see your skills before he takes you with," Benard said before dismissing me. I ran down the stairs and out the front door. I rushed through the gavel courtyard and into the gym. I found a man with brown hair and blue eyes hitting a punching bag. I jumped as the punching bag broke off the chain flying across the room.
"You must be Sarah I'm Easton," he said breathing heavily.
"So you wanted to see me," I said with a smile. He grabbed my arm with one quick move pinning me to the floor. I winced as my back hit the unforgiving wood floor. "Thanks for the warning."
"In the field you won't get a heads up," he snapped gripping my throat. I took a deep breath and swing my arm knocking his hands away before kicking him off me. I scrambled to my feet quickly with such persuasion. I made careful movements as to not be detected as faster than everyone.
"What can't keep up?" I smirked as he glared at me. He rushed towards me exposing his side. I swing my leg knocking him to the ground with ease. He hit the ground eyes wide with shock. "You expose your side when you charge at people."
"Why has no one told me?" He asked as I laughed.
"It's not super obvious I just was trained by my parents to analyze movements," I said offering my hand. I pulled him up as he smiled at me.
"We should be able to take the Gemini no problem," he said causing my smile to falter slightly.
"Yeah," I said pulling my hair up.
"What's wrong with killing them? They are dangerous," he asked as I sighed.
"I don't think they are dangerous or we would already know where they are," I said looking into his eyes. He looked at me with an unreadable emotion before walking over to his gym bag. He pulled out a gun handing it to me.
"Aim at the target," he said motioning to a paper on the wall across the gym. I held my arms out straight my eyes fixed on the target. I fired three rounds into the target all of them hitting the center. I shrugged handing the gun back. "Oh shit I might be out of a job."
"Yeah right. My father would never allow that," I said softly.
"Do you always do what your father says?" Easton asked as I nodded.
"Yes I do. I only joined the guard division to protect him," I whispered as Easton's eyes locked onto mine.
"Why did he threaten your parents?" Easton asked confusion evident on his face.
"He killed my mother and said I had to join the guard. I decided if he was going to make me join I should protect the only family I have left," I said tears pooling in my eyes.
"He killed her for no reason?" Easton asked as I looked at him.
"He thought she knew where the Gemini Lycans were," I gasped as his eyes softened. "She didn't know anything!" I felt guilty for lying to Easton but I had to make everyone believe I knew nothing.
"Are you sure? Benard wouldn't just attack a member without cause," Easton asked causing me to walk away.
"We're done for now!" I snapped harshly before walking back into the main house. I stopped when I heard hushed conversation. I spotted Issabelle and my father standing outside. I walked along the edge of the building until I was within earshot.
"I had to give Benard a name. He was getting suspicious where I got my information. The books you gave us were very helpful in figuring out how to find the boy," Issabelle said as my father smiled at her.
"Anything for my girl," he said as my heart dropped. She was his daughter and he betrayed my entire family. I felt tears rushing down my face as I watched them talk. He betrayed mom and increased the odds that I would get killed. He clearly doesn't care about my brother.
"How could you look me in the eyes and lie to me?!" I gasped causing them both to spin on me.
"Sarah," my dad gasped but I silenced him with a glare before facing Issabelle.
"And you! Why wouldn't you tell me that we were sisters?!" I gasped with pain filling my eyes.
"Sarah I wanted to tell you but Benard made me promise if he spared you. I told him not to hurt you but he needed a reason," Issabelle said her eyes begging me to listen. I glared at my father who had broken my trust in the worst way possible. I trusted him with my life only for him to prove how little he cares about his children. The only one that matters to him was Issabelle. It pained me so much to see what love I hadn't thought was missing now clearly missing.
"Don't you see you are putting me at risk? They are sending me after the Gemini Lycans," I snapped unsure how much he told Issabelle.
"I know I'm sorry but Issabelle needed help. The Gemini are a threat to her status," my father said which just infuriated me. I slapped his across the face before walking inside. I walked right past Benard who grabbed my arm quickly.
"You're upset what happened?" He asked and I could see right through his fake concern. He just wanted to tap me for more information that I was never going to give him. The only value I held for him was leverage in a senseless war against the Gemini Lycans.
"Don't act like you care you killed my mom," I snapped pulling away from him before making my way up the stairs and into the study. I sat at the desk pulling out the picture of my brother. He looked so much like me. Same blonde hair same chocolate eyes. He was the only thing that matters anymore. I was going to find him no matter what, I was going to save my brother at any cost even if it cost me my life.
