Prologue
Rayne's pov
I have been a vet for 3 years now, and I love it. I just opened up my own practice a year ago. I love working with animals. It's people I don't like to much. I always wanted to be a pediatrician, but I didn't think I could do it. I chose to work with animals because they don't judge you.
I am a plus- sized woman. People look at me and laugh. I have been teased about my weight all my life. Those haunting words are what prevented me from following my dreams.
I am a good vet. I worked hard to get my own practice. This is where I was meant to be. I was all alone here. Just me and the animals. I liked it that way. I enjoyed being alone.
My family keeps saying I need to find a good man and settle down. Find me a man that doesn't care about my size, and maybe I will. Men don't want big girls. They want little twiggy models that doesn't know how to eat. My knowing how to eat, and loving food was a problem.
I dated before, but it never went anywhere. They were always embarrassed to be seen with me. They wanted to stay in the bedroom, and I wanted more than that. So, I stay single. Less chance of getting hurt that way.
My secretary was on lunch, and I heard the bell go off. Great that meant someone was here. I hated talking with people. Guess it's part of the job to talk to people though.
I walked out front and stopped dead in my tracks. There at the front desk was the sexiest man alive holding a little puppy. Now this was a site that would leave any woman panting.
"Hi, are you Dr. Rayne?"
"Yes, how can I help you?"
"I found this little guy outside my office, and my friend told me about this place. I will pay to have him checked out. If you can't find his owners, I would be happy to take him home with me."
"Okay I will look him over and see if he has a chip. Just fill out this, and I will let you know when I know anything."
I took the puppy from his arms. When our hands accidently touched, I felt like I was on fire. It's been a long time since a man has touched me. I got his information then he left. I took the puppy back and started to look him over when my phone rang.
"Hello."
"Hey Rayne, it's me Josie."
Josie and I have been great friends since high school. She was now married and had a little boy of her own. I was so happy for her.
"Hey Josie, how are things going?"
"Well, I was wondering what you were doing Friday night."
"I have nothing planned. Why what's up?"
"Well, there is this doctor that works with Brantley that I would love for you to meet. It's not a date just come over for a cookout please."
I hated being set up. It never worked out. But I could never tell Josie no.
"Fine what time should I be there?"
"Oh, yay be here by 7. This is going to be great Rayne just wait and see."
We hung up, and I felt panicked. I knew this wasn't going to end well. Men just didn't like a woman with curves.
Kane's pov
I loved being a pediatrician. I knew since I was a kid that I would always be a doctor. But lately I felt like it wasn't enough. All I ever did was work. I was lonely. I wish I had a wife and child to come home too. All my friends are already married with kids.
Every time we went out, I was always the 5th wheel. So, I just stopped going out. I was doing a house call for one of my patients today. He wasn't doing very well, and I knew he needed to be hospitalized. This is the part of my job I didn't like.
Once I had everything set up for my patient to get to the hospital I headed to my practice. When I was walking up to the door, I heard a whimper from a box in front of the door. I ran over to it and saw a small frail puppy. I called my buddy Brantley and asked if he knew any good vets in the area. He told me to go to his wife Josie's friends vet hospital.
I picked up the little guy and took him there. I walked in but didn't see anyone. Then a beautiful woman came out from the back.
Our hands touched and it felt like an electric current went right through me. I left and wasn't in the car only a second when Brantley called me.
"Hey."
"Hey, did you find the vet hospital okay?"
"Yea thanks."
"So, what did you think of Rayne?"
"Honestly, she was gorgeous, but why are you asking?"
"Well Josie wants to play matchmaker. She invited Rayne over for a cookout. You interested."
"What time?"
"Be here about 6:30?"
"I'll be there."
"Okay see you later."
I hung up and hurried of to my practice. I wanted to be done on time so I could see her again. Maybe I wouldn't be lonely for long.
Chapter 1
Rayne's pov
I hate blind dates. They never went great for me. Once the guy saw me, he found any excuse to leave. I doubted this guy would be any different. I wondered what was wrong with him. Why was he needing to be set up? From what I was told he was a pediatrician and worked a lot. Just what I needed a guy that was married to his job.
The fact that he works with kids was a plus. I wanted to be a mother more than anything. I could feel my clock ticking away. I wanted to get married than have kids, but now I am not so sure that will happen. Right now, I would just settle for a baby. Maybe I should have a one-night stand just so I could become a mom.
I think that idea sounds more likely than finding love. The only reason I agreed to this stupid date is because Josie is like a sister to me. I know she wants me to have what she has. She is a great person, and I don't want to disappoint her. I mean it would be amazing if it did go well.
I kept thinking about the guy that brought in the puppy. His eyes were so dreamy. I cuddled the small puppy up against me. Poor little guy was starving, but other than that he was in good health. It made me so angry when people abounded animals like this.
This is the reason I became a vet. I loved animals. They loved you unconditionally. They didn't judge you like humans did. Here this puppy was left for dead, yet he still trusted me. I called the man that brought him in and let him know that the puppy would be okay. Plus, he was not chipped so chances are he didn't belong to anyone.
I would keep him here a few days to hydrate him and look for an owner. He was thankful for everything I was doing and told me to keep hi posted. I found myself wondering if he was single. I wish I could find a man like him. If he treated humans like he treated this puppy I would be one lucky woman.
I wish he was my blind date. Then again maybe not. A man like that would never want me. I was fat, and ugly. Don't go feeling sorry for me I have accepted this a long time ago. I have been told my whole life that I was fat and ugly. It doesn't bother me anymore. Maybe I should just cancel tonight. My self-esteem can't take anymore blows.
Chapter 2
Kane's pov
I hurried home after work so I can clean up then head over to Brantley's before Rayne got there. When she called and told me about the puppy, I almost said see you tonight. She didn't know I was the one she was seeing on her blind date. I wondered if she would be happy, it was me.
She was incredible. To dang sexy for her own good. The fact that she was a vet was even more of a plus. I loved animals. I was really hoping no one claimed the puppy. At least having him would mean I didn't come home to an empty house anymore.
I was exhausted, and lonely. All I had is work so I threw myself into it. I really wanted to settle down and have a family. I got to Brantley's, and he said she wasn't here yet. So, we went out to the grill, and I helped him cook the food. Brantley was a good guy we have been friends for years now.
"So, Josie's friend isn't going to be mad about all of this is she?" I asked.
"No man she is one of the sweetest women I know."
"So why is she single?"
"Because she doesn't think she is worthy of love, and dates losers."
I just shook my head. I mean what do I say to that? She was crazy if she didn't see how beautiful she was. I hoped she would give me a chance. Josie kept bringing stuff out, so I went into the kitchen to help her since Brantley had to watch the grill. Maybe she could give me some insight on Rayne.
"Hey Josie, so about Rayne um is she even looking to date someone?"
"Yea she is, but so far she has had no luck. She has been set up on dates, but the men leave once they see her."
What the hell? Who does that?
"Why the hell would anyone want to hurt her? She is incredible."
"You have it bad. Just please don't hurt her."
"I promise you I won't."
She smiled at me and walked off. I was about to walk out after her when I heard a gasp. I turned around to see Rayne.
"You? You're my blind date?"
"Yes."
She didn't say anything just turned around and walked out.
"What did you say to her?" Josie asked.
"She asked if I was her date, and I said yes. Then she just left. Did I mess this all up?"
"I will call her. Don't worry Kane I am sure there is a good reason why she left."
Yea the reason was she didn't like me. I wish I knew why.
"Here it looks like you need this." Brantley said as he handed me a beer.
"Thanks."
"Look like I said she is very insecure. I honestly think she thought this was some joke."
"Yea maybe. I'm going to go I'm not really hungry anymore."
"I will call you once Josie talks to her."
I left wondering why she would think this was a joke. I mean what man wouldn't want a successful beautiful woman to like her.
