September 11, 2004. San Diego, USA.

Coronado's streets were bathed in serene silence, the only sound being the gentle lullaby of the ocean waves. The city's inhabitants, a mix of weary tourists and families, had succumbed to the day's exhaustion, their dreams no doubt filled with visions of sun-kissed beaches and endless summer fun. But amidst the slumbering homes, a few windows still glowed like beacons, shining bright with the promise of late-night laughter and adventure. And in one of these illuminated havens, the Kuznetsov family's story was just beginning to unfold.

"It's past your bedtime Faina. Don't make me chase after you every night" Kamila called after her daughter, her voice laced with exhaustion and playful sternness as the little girl darted to the living room and straight into her father's lap.

"We're on vacation mama! I want to stay up for longer this night"

Dominik smiled down at the eight-year-old clinging to him before beseeching his wife "Just let her be for an hour more, Mila" and the girl squealed in delight at her victory while Kamila shook her head.

"You spoil her too much, Dominik" The woman folded her arms across her chest "And you can put her to bed. I'm done for the day" she huffed before retreating to the bedroom, leaving her husband to handle the bedtime battle.

Faina pouted, "Why does Nicky get to stay up and not me?"

Nikolai entering the room replied bluntly, "Because I'm a teenager" and Faina scowled, her brows furrowed in discontent.

"That's not fair. I want to be a teenager too"

"And you will be, eventually" Dominik patted her head while he raised a questioning brow at his fifteen-year-old son who barely ever left his room.

"Just came to grab this" Nikolai says reaching for his headphones on the dining room table "Go to bed Fay" he addressed his baby sister.

"Papa says I can stay" she huffs and Nikolai shoots a blank stare at his father before returning to his room without a word.

Dominik indulged his daughter in her endless nonsense chatter until she passed out in his arms.

"Finally," he whispered scooping her up and transporting her to the room to tuck her in.

...

As Dominik entered the room, the soft creak of the door broke the silence. Kamila lay in bed, her eyes closed and her chest rising and falling with slow deliberate breaths. He approached the bathroom, the sound of running water and gentle humming filling the room. After freshening up, he slid into bed beside her.

"I know you're still awake" he whispered. Kamila often feigned sleep when upset, avoiding conversation.

When she didn't respond, he drew her close, his arms wrapping around her "I'm sorry, miliy" he said softly brushing his lips on her shoulder.

Kamila rolled over facing him, her eyes flashing with frustration. "You always indulge her and she never listens to me"

Dominik's boyish smile flashed, his eyes crinkling at the corners "She's my little girl"

Kamila corrected "Our little girl" her voice firm but gentle "I don't want to raise a spoiled child"

He pushed a strand of hair behind her ear and his gaze locked on hers. "You're an amazing mother. Our children are perfect" Kamila smiled, her eyes softening as Dominik's voice dropped to barely a whisper in the dim light. "You have me wrapped around your finger, just like she does. You're all my weaknesses".

"You're all my strength" she whispered and their lips met in a tender kiss.

He peppered kisses down her neck to the swell of her breasts as his hands disappeared beneath her silk nightgown, exploring her thighs. Kamila's breath quickened, her hands tangling in his hair.

"Dom-" she sighed when his hands wandered deeper between her legs-

A sudden jarring crash shattered the brief euphoric moment, startling them both.

"What was that?" Kamila asked, her voice laced with worry as she clutched her husband's arm.

Dominik's face masked seriousness as his instincts ran on high alert. "I don't know" he replied.

Before they could process the noise, a louder bang resonated through the house, enough to stir unsettlement in the couple. Dominik's expression turned grim with his mind already breeding the worst-case scenarios. The noise was enough to wake their neighbors if they didn't have soundproof homes.

He sprang into action, his voice firm and commanding. "Get the kids, Mila, and lock yourselves in the basement" he reached under the hidden compartment of the bed to grab a gun and shove it behind his pants.

She gave him a firm nod and raced to the door with him following close behind.

"Be safe, Dom" she whispered and he gave he a reassuring nod in response.

"Don't come out unless I come and fetch you" he added. "Mila-" he warned when she didn't heed.

"I'll try"

As Kamila hastened to the children's rooms, she found Nikolai already carrying Faina. "This way" she instructed, taking Faina from him and leading them to the basement.

"What's going on?" Nikolai asked pensively.

"I think it's a break-in" she replied.

"Why didn't the alarms go off then?"

"I don't know" Kamila shut the door behind them.

"Papa?" Faina asked

"He'll be here soon, kroshka" she whispered hugging her daughter to her chest.

Meanwhile, Dominik made his way to the living room in tentative steps to figure out the cause of the noise.

"I told you to be fucking careful" a man hissed angrily in an almost inaudible voice.

"Felix" A cold voice cut through the atmosphere, drawing the attention of the two men in his living room to him.

The man named Felix whipped around to the sound of the voice, temporarily startled. "Dammit," Felix cursed before putting on an eerie smile. "Dominik. A pleasure to see your face again after so long"

"What the fuck are you doing breaking into my home?"

"Visiting my brother?" Felix replied, voice dripping in sarcasm.

"My brother was dead to me over a decade ago" Dominik narrowed his eyes at him, the tension between them was palpable.

"Tsk, still so bitter. And here I thought finding another true love would've softened you" Felix chuckled.

"Enough games, Felix. Why are you here?"

Felix retrieved his gun from his suit pocket as Dominik did the same. Their movements swift and practiced that one would've missed it if they blinked.

Felix's eyes glinted with malice "I've decided your time is up"

Dominik's expression turned fierce, his eyes blazing with anger and the initial surprise of seeing his brother again and years, washed away "The audacity of you" Felix scoffed "I'm on vacation Felix, and I'd like to keep it that way. So, I suggest you take you and your dog-" he said referring to the man with Felix who hadn't attempted to move an inch "-out of my fucking house".

Felix tilted his gun to the side and pulled on the trigger, releasing a bullet an inch away from Dominik's head and straight into the wall. "I'm not here to fuck around with you" he sneered.

"And I'm not finding your intrusion particularly amusing either. I can do away with you both right now but for old times' sake, I'm giving you the option to leave. The offer is open for a limited time"

"You're fucking surrounded and outnumbered dumdum" Felix laughed

"Who sent you?"

"I'm nobody's servant!" Felix scowled.

"Yeah right"

In the basement, Kamila heard the faint sound of a gun going off and her heart pounded inside her ribcage

"Nicky, take your sister" she whispered urgently to her son.

"And where are you going?" Nikolai asked her worriedly.

Kamila pinned her son with a resolute stare "If I'm not back in five minutes, take your sister and use the escape door"

"What-"

"Now's not the time to rebel against me Nikolai. I don't feel good about your father being up there by himself". She opened a safe in the basement taking out a gun "Lock the door behind me" And with that, she left.

Dominik had stepped on a nerve and Felix had tackled him head-on. Two more men marched into the living room observing the two brothers in a fight.

"This is out of script" the first man who came in with Felix muttered. He was a tall broody man with sharp cheekbones.

"Do you think Felix knows what he's doing? We were given direct orders to assassinate the family quietly and leave, not start unnecessary hand combat" The second man replied already pissed. He was an inch shorter than Tall-broody with a lean physique.

"He's stalling on purpose" the third bulky man added with realization and pulled out his gun aiming it at Dominik as the brothers tackled each other on the ground and another gunshot was fired.

Chapter 2 Present Day, 2019. New York, USA.

Garrett and Edgar were in disbelief over the new CEO appointment, of a young woman with no work experience. The office buzzed with gossip.

"How could the board do this?" Garrett asked.

"She's unqualified and it could be disastrous for the company," Edgar agreed.

Tabitha defended the decision, "The board must have seen something in her." But Garrett scoffed,

"She's only got the job because her father owns most of the company shares. It's nepotism, pure and simple." The trio's conversation reflected the office's sentiment, questioning the board's wisdom and worrying about the company's future.

Tabitha shrugged, "Some people are born lucky."

"Why wasn't Mr. Devon's son made CEO? He's more suitable." Edgar asked.

Brooke joined in, "Because he's a man?"

Garrett crossed his arms, and Brooke rolled her eyes. "No, because he's older and has experience," Garrett clarified.

Tabitha intervened, "Judge her capabilities during her introduction today" and she returned to her work, leaving the others to murmur among themselves, their concerns and biases evident.

The conversation continued, with the team skeptical about the new CEO's qualifications as they awaited young Miss Devon's arrival.

...

"Attention all staff!" The overhead speakers boomed, the voice echoing through every office floor, instantly capturing the attention of every worker and intern. The sudden interruption silenced the bustling workspaces, leaving only an anticipatory hush in its wake. "Please report to the meeting room now. I repeat, please report to the meeting room now". The announcement went on.

As personnel from various departments made their way to the meeting room, a mix of emotions filled the air. Some were curious, others annoyed, while a few couldn't hide their excitement. Worried glances were also exchanged, fueling the collective unease. The sound of high heels clicking against the marble floors signaled the approaching arrival of the meeting's leader, and everyone waited on baited breaths. The theatre-like setting was set, with all eyes fixed on the entrance, awaiting the revelation to come.

Varya Wren Devon, the Devon princess, exuded confidence as she entered the room, her effortless stride preceded by the soft swing of the doors. Her understated attire belied her luxurious aura, her hair cascading elegantly down her shoulders, and her Hermès Birkin dangling nonchalantly from her arm. Allen Palmer, the acting CEO since Derek Devon's retirement, walked alongside her. Varya's piercing gaze swept the room, her sharp eyes missing nothing. As they reached their seats, the handover ceremony began, marking the official transfer of power to the young heiress, whose presence commanded attention.

Allen Palmer, the outgoing CEO, stood at the helm of the meeting, his voice filled with conviction as he announced his decision to step down from the CEO position. The room erupted into applause when he introduced Varya Wren Devon, to the team. As she gracefully made her way to the podium, the audience fell silent once again, their eyes fixed on the new leader. Varya's voice was clear and determined as she addressed the room,

"I know some of you may have your reservations about me, as this wasn't the change you were expecting. You may doubt my knowledge and capabilities in company affairs, but I assure you, I have been more inclined with this company for far longer than you believe. So, I ask for your earnest cooperation in raising Devon Group to unprecedented heights. Thank you." The room was pin-drop silent as Varya's words resonated through the hall.

Varya stepped down from the podium, the audience erupted into applause once again. With the handover complete, the staff dispersed to their respective offices, each carrying their thoughts and opinions about the new CEO. While some were convinced of Varya's capabilities, others harbored doubts, unsure if her youth and inexperience would hinder her ability to lead. Allen, with a warm smile, offered Varya a tour of the company, familiarizing her with the inner workings of the organization. "Thank you, Allen, but I think I can take it from here," Varya said, her voice firm and confident. Allen gave a brief nod as he left. She sighed, a mix of relief and determination, before taking her seat at her new desk, proud that she had accomplished the first step to her lifelong plan.

...

As the Devon family settled at the table for dinner, Agata, with a hint of curiosity turned to Varya and asked, "So how was your first day as the new boss lady?".

Varya shrugged eliciting a chuckle from Derek. "A little overhyped" she replied.

Derek, slicing into his meat chimed in, "I did warn you, it isn't fun". Varya playfully rolled her eyes "It's work, Dad. It's never fun. I still like it though".

"And I still don't know why you choose to be cooped up in an office like your father, Wren. Devon women never need to work" Agata interjected sipping her wine and Varya's expression turned resolute,

"I don't need to, but I want to, Mom".

The older woman shook her head and smiled "Of course, because the princess gets whatever she wants".

Varya's eyes narrowed slightly, a brief memory flashing through her mind, but chose not to respond. Derek, sensing the tension, redirected the conversation.

"And what about you, Lucas? How do you find your new placement?".

Lucas, who had been quiet all the while, shot his father a glare, his tone serious, "Shitty"

The room fell silent with only the sound of utensils scraping against plates and Agata, oblivious to the undercurrent asked Lucas,

"What does your job entail, honey?".

"I think Dad can best explain it. Why don't you ask him?" The emphasis on 'Dad' is not lost on anyone. "Excuse me" he added, pushing away from the table, his chair scraping against the floor. He got up and walked away leaving the room in uncomfortable silence.

Derek's jaw ticked, eyes narrowing, still, he maintained his composure. Varya turned to him, her voice laced with concern,

"What was that about?" Agata's questioning gaze also fell on her husband who forced a reassuring smile,

"I guess he hates his job. He'll come around".

The two women shared a skeptical look as Derek excused himself from the table as well, following Lucas out of the room.

Once they were out of earshot, Derek stopped Lucas in his tracks. Their voices were hushed but intense.

"Are you trying to piss me off?" Derek demanded, his anger simmering just below the surface.

Lucas stood his ground, eyes flashing with defiance, "Does mom know?"

The man's laughter was cold, mirthless, "I don't bluff, boy. You would do as told unless you want to have a very hard life. Lots of people would kill for every privilege I hand to you, yet you choose to behave like a fucking rebellious teen. Get your act together because there is no backing out once you're in!"

Lucas's face twisted in resentment, "Damn you" he spat before storming off, leaving Derek's anger hanging in the air like a challenge.

If one looked at the Devons from the outside, they were the picture-perfect family. Only the inhabitants knew the secrets they each held onto.

Agata retired to her room for the night as the servants tidied up after dinner. Derek downed a glass of scotch. Varya paced around her room, her mind racing as sleep eluded her as always and Lucas sped through the streets in his car to the apartment of the one person who hated Derek's guts as much as he did.

Chapter 3 September 11, 2004. San Diego, USA.

The gunshot echoed through the Kuznetsov vacation home, freezing everyone in place. The silence that followed was deafening, punctuated only by the sound of heavy breathing. Felix, regaining his composure, shoves Dominik off him and rises to his feet. The bulky would-be assassin crumples to the ground, a pool of blood rapidly spreading from the fatal head wound. All eyes locked on Kamila, her hand still gripping the gun, her expression unwavering.

She had acted without hesitation, protecting her husband's life. Dominik scrambled to his feet, his eyes fixed on Kamila with a mix of shock and gratitude. The subsequent events unfolded swiftly, a chaotic blur of movement and shouts but Kamila remained fixed to the spot, her gaze fixed on the body lying motionless.

Tall-broody and Lean-grumpy drew their weapons, training them on Kamila as a swarm of black-clad men stormed into the house. Dominik lunged from the ground picking up his gun, while, dashing towards his wife, as Lean-grumpy pounced on Kamila, wrenching the gun from her grasp and pinning her in a brutal headlock, the muzzle of his weapon pressed menacingly against her temple.

"Mila!" he yelled, coming to a halt, pointing his gun at his wife's captor.

Tall-broody sneered, his eyes gleaming with malice, "Drop the gun, Dominik." Dominik's gaze narrowed; his jaw clenched.

"Don't fucking touch her!" Dominik bellowed, his rage boiling over. Tall-broody sneered, his voice dripping with sadistic intent, "Drop your fucking gun, or he blows her brains out!" The air was heavy with tension as Dominik hesitated, his eyes locked on Kamila's terrified face, before slowly relinquishing his weapon.

Dominik was roughly shoved to the ground and forced onto his knees as the situation escalated. Tall-broody barked orders at two of his men, "Search the house! Find the son!"

Felix's eyes blazed with anger, "What are you doing?" he spat.

Tall-broody sneered, "Taking control of the mission since you clearly have a soft spot for your baby brother."

Felix's face reddened, "I give the orders here!" he countered, but Tall-broody was unfazed.

"Tell that to Jon!" he yelled, gesturing to the lifeless body on the floor, "Oh wait, you can't because he's currently decomposing on the fucking white carpet! Fuck off, Felix, or I'll make you a part of the job." The threat hung in the air, heavy with menace, as the black-clad men closed in on Felix.

As the two men scoured the house for any sign of the Kuznetsov child, Nikolai stood frozen in indecision. His mother's instructions to flee echoed in his mind, but his feet seemed rooted to the spot. Faina's trembling voice broke the spell, "Nicky-" she whispered, her eyes brimming with tears as she clung to his arm.

Nikolai's instincts kicked in, and he pulled her close, trying to reassure her, "Fay, it's alright." But his words were hollow, as the reality of their situation sunk in. Nearly ten minutes had passed since their mother had left them in the basement, and the sounds from above grew louder.

"Look over there, I'll go this way" The muffled voices and footsteps echoed through the floor above the basement, and Nikolai knew he had to act.

With a surge of adrenaline, Nikolai swiftly moved to the open safe, grabbing handfuls of cash and stuffing them into his pockets. He then rushed back to Faina; his eyes locked on hers. "We have to go, come with me," he urged, tugging on her hand. But Faina resisted, her lower lip quivering.

"But Mama and Papa..." she protested, her voice trembling.

Nikolai's tone turned gentle. "There's no time, Fay, we need to leave now!" He knelt, meeting her at eye level, and explained, "They'll come get us, Fay, but we have to help them by getting out of here. If the bad guys catch us, Papa would be very upset." Faina relented and she nodded slightly. Nikolai let out a sigh of relief and offered a comforting smile. "Do you want a piggyback ride?" The girl's face brightened, and she nodded enthusiastically. Nikolai hoisted her onto his back, her small arms wrapping tightly around his neck. With his sister secure, he made his way to the escape door, his heart pounding in his chest. He pushed the door open, revealing a dark and narrow corridor. Nikolai took a deep breath and stepped forward.

In the living room, Kamila was violently shoved to the ground, a faint whimper escaping her lips. She glared at Felix, her eyes blazing with anger and fear. "Why are you doing this, Felix?" she demanded, her voice trembling.

Felix's expression was one of frustration. "You were never meant to be a part of this, Mila," he replied and Kamila scoffed.

"What are you going on about? The entire family is part of this!" Lean-grumpy interjected.

Felix's gaze flashed to him, his eyes narrowing. "Stay the fuck out of my business!" he snarled. For an instant, his eyes softened as he looked at Kamila, a flicker of remorse visible. But it was quickly replaced by a hardened resolve. In the next heartbeat, he raised his gun and fired, the sound echoing through the room.

Kamila's body slumped to the ground, her hand instinctively reaching for the wound where the bullet had lodged between her neck and shoulder.

A faint cry escaped her lips as she struggled to speak. Dominik's anguished scream echoed through the room, "No!" He fought against the men holding him back, desperate to reach his wife's side. "Let go of me!" he gritted out, his eyes fixed on Kamila's pale face.

Tall-broody's sneering voice cut through the chaos, "Let them say their goodbyes, at least. I'm not a monster." The men released Dominik, and he rushed to Kamila's side, cradling her in his arms. "Don't l-let them find-" she choked out, her voice weak. Dominik's face contorted in pain, "Shh, miliy, don't speak. Save your strength." He knew what she was trying to say, and his heart was heavy with fear. "Stay alive, miliy, please," he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.

Dominik's eyes welled up with angry tears as he held Kamila's trembling body. He felt her life slipping away, her breaths growing shallow, as a new pool of blood spread beneath them. Kamila's eyelids drooped, her chest rising and falling with labored breaths, until she finally went limp in his arms. Dominik's rage clouded his reasoning as he gently laid her on the carpet. He turned on Felix, his fists clenched. "What the fuck did I ever do to you?! What's her fault in all this?!" he bellowed, his voice cracking with emotion. "I thought you loved her!" He lunged at his brother but was swiftly restrained by the men, their grip tightening as they held him back rendering his struggles futile.

Just then, the two men sent to search for the Kuznetsov's son reentered the room, their faces grim.

"Where is he?" Tall-broody demanded, his eyes scanning the room, only to realize the boy was nowhere to be found.

One of the men spoke up, "There's no one else here. The children are gone."

Tall-broody's expression darkened. "What do you mean...gone?Hold on... What do you mean...children??" He marched towards the man.

The second man stepped forward, holding out a few items - a stuffed toy, a ribbon bow, and one leg of a little girl's shoe. "There was a room, filled with these. We have reason to believe there's a second child."

Tall-broody's eyes widened in shock as he turned to face Dominik, "You have a daughter??" The accusation hung in the air, as Dominik's eyes blazed with a fierce intensity, his grief and anger boiling over.

Felix's eyes widened in surprise, while Dominik's glare intensified, his anger and helplessness palpable.

Tall-broody swiftly regained his composure, barking orders at the men. "They're children, for fuck's sake! Find them!"

The second man hesitated, "We found a locked basement and managed to break in, but by the time we entered, they were already gone."

Lean-grumpy cut in, "The son couldn't have gone far on foot, especially with his sister in tow." and the first man added, "I've already dispatched Axel and Monk to scour the streets outside. They'll find them."

Dominik's jaw clenched, his fists tightening as Felix's glance in his direction only fuels his anger.
