Chapter 1 The Routine

The Monday morning buzz hummed through the halls of Brooks Business College as students filed in, eyes bleary from too little sleep and too many deadlines. Olivia Brooks, seated at her favorite corner table in the student lounge, sipped her coffee, her eyes scanning over a stack of notes. It was the same table she always picked-the one just far enough from the windows to avoid distractions but close enough to give her a glimpse of the campus lawn where groups gathered between classes. It gave her comfort, a spot she could rely on in a schedule that rarely wavered.

Olivia wasn't one for spontaneity. She knew her routine down to the hour: an early-morning coffee, a full day of lectures, afternoons in the library, and nights spent revisiting her notes until her eyelids drooped. It wasn't thrilling, perhaps, but it was stable. Reliable. And stability was something Olivia valued more than excitement.

"Olivia! You're here early," a familiar voice called from across the lounge. Her best friend, Emily, bounded over, a grin on her face as she pulled out the chair beside her.

"I have a presentation this afternoon," Olivia replied with a faint smile, her eyes drifting back to her notes. "Just making sure I've got everything covered."

Emily rolled her eyes, settling in with a bag of pastries. "Olivia, you're always covered. That's why you're the star student. You could probably recite that whole presentation without looking."

"It's not about being a star student," Olivia murmured, brushing a stray hair behind her ear. "I just like... certainty."

"And yet you're missing out on the most exciting event of the semester!" Emily's eyes sparkled as she leaned in closer, barely able to contain her enthusiasm. "Rumor has it that the speaker this afternoon isn't your average corporate type. Apparently, he's young, absurdly successful, and-get this-a complete heartthrob."

Olivia raised an eyebrow, mildly intrigued despite herself. She'd read the emails about the visiting businessman but hadn't paid much attention. Just another successful entrepreneur here to deliver a motivational talk to students hoping to make their mark.

"I heard he's the CEO of some new investment firm," Emily went on. "He's probably twice our age, but apparently, he has this... presence."

"Presence," Olivia repeated, a slight smirk playing on her lips. She couldn't imagine someone her father's age holding the sort of charm that would have her classmates buzzing.

"I'm telling you, Liv. Just wait till you see him," Emily insisted, her grin widening. "He's nothing like the old suit-and-tie types we usually get. Everyone's talking about him."

Olivia shrugged, returning to her notes. "I doubt he'll make much of an impression. Most of those talks are just self-promotion. Besides, I'm here to focus on my degree, not get distracted by some businessman's charisma."

Emily chuckled. "Fine, Miss Practical. Just don't say I didn't warn you."

---

The hours drifted by, and before Olivia knew it, the auditorium had filled up, every seat occupied by students hoping to catch a glimpse of the "mysterious guest." She found a spot near the middle, settling in with her notebook and pen, ready to jot down anything that might actually be useful for her studies.

The crowd murmured with anticipation as a man stepped up to the podium. He was tall, lean, and dressed in a sharp, dark suit that seemed to have been tailored specifically for him. His hair was dark, neatly styled, and his gaze was intense, scanning the room before he even began to speak. Olivia noticed an almost electric shift in the room's energy as he looked out over the audience, his mouth curling into a faint, confident smile.

"Good afternoon, everyone," he began, his voice rich and smooth, with a hint of amusement. "My name is Alexander Cross. I'll keep this short. I know your time is valuable-and so is mine."

A few students chuckled, though Olivia remained skeptical, her pen poised over her notebook. She tried to focus on his words, but there was something unsettling about the way his eyes lingered on her side of the room. She brushed it off as coincidence, willing herself to concentrate.

Alexander launched into his speech, but it was unlike any business lecture she'd heard. He spoke not of profits or statistics but of "the thrill of risk," of seizing opportunities no one else saw. His voice, smooth and mesmerizing, made every idea seem tantalizing, dangerous even. Despite herself, Olivia found her attention slipping from her notes. His words struck a chord she didn't fully understand-a longing for something she couldn't name.

"Opportunity," Alexander was saying, his gaze sweeping over the audience, "comes at unexpected times, in unexpected places. And it doesn't wait for you to be ready." His eyes locked on Olivia's for a split second, and she felt a chill run down her spine.

She looked down, her heart pounding as she scribbled something random in her notebook, forcing herself to break eye contact. Ridiculous, she thought. He was just some businessman, charismatic and charming, sure, but why should he affect her?

---

After the talk, Emily was buzzing with excitement. "Did you see the way he looked at you?" she squealed as they exited the auditorium. "I swear, Liv, his eyes were glued to you. He didn't even try to hide it!"

Olivia waved her off, though her cheeks flushed. "You're imagining things, Em. He was looking at everyone."

"Oh, please." Emily nudged her with a knowing smirk. "The rest of us were practically invisible. You should've seen your face when he looked your way. I think you might have blushed!"

Olivia rolled her eyes, brushing it off with a laugh, but inwardly, she felt unsettled. There was a feeling lingering, one she couldn't quite name-something between fascination and apprehension.

As they parted ways for their next classes, Olivia wandered across the quad, her mind drifting back to the talk. She hadn't believed in "presence" until today, but there was something undeniable about Alexander Cross-a confidence and allure that felt both captivating and unsettling. She couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted in her life, something that wouldn't let her go back to the quiet stability she'd once known.

---

That night, Olivia lay in bed, her mind still tangled in the events of the day. She closed her eyes, willing herself to forget about Alexander Cross. He was just a passing presence, she reminded herself. Her life was perfectly fine without such distractions.

Yet as she drifted into sleep, his image lingered in her mind-the intense gaze, the faint smile. And somewhere, far from her knowledge, a shadow waited, watching, biding its time.

Chapter 2 An unexpected opportunity

The next morning, Olivia found herself unusually on edge. It had been a restless night, her mind replaying Alexander Cross's talk over and over. She could still remember the magnetic look he had given her, a look that seemed to pierce through the crowded auditorium and fix right on her. She tried to shake it off as mere coincidence, but something about him had stuck, a stubborn thought that refused to fade.

Olivia was finishing her notes in the campus library when her phone buzzed. She glanced down, surprised to see a message from her advisor, Professor Hayes.

"Olivia, can you come by my office? Alexander Cross has requested to speak with you."

Her heart skipped. What could he possibly want with her? She felt a mix of excitement and apprehension as she gathered her things and made her way to Professor Hayes's office.

---

As she entered, Olivia's eyes met the figure standing by the window, hands in his pockets, gaze focused somewhere beyond the campus grounds. Alexander Cross turned as she entered, a polite, almost unreadable smile gracing his lips.

"Olivia," Professor Hayes greeted her, gesturing for her to take a seat. "Mr. Cross has expressed interest in offering you a unique opportunity."

Alexander's gaze settled on her, intense yet unreadable. "Thank you for meeting with me, Olivia," he said, his voice just as smooth and commanding as she remembered. "I've been keeping an eye on some of the top students here, and your name came up. I was impressed by your academic record and dedication. There aren't many who have the discipline I saw in you yesterday."

Olivia blinked, her pulse quickening. "Thank you," she replied, feeling a warmth rise to her cheeks. She wasn't sure how to interpret his words. Was this just a professional compliment, or was there something more?

He continued, his expression unwavering. "I run a growing investment firm, and we're always on the lookout for fresh talent. I'd like to offer you an internship position."

The words hung in the air, and Olivia could scarcely believe them. She felt a surge of excitement-and apprehension. Alexander's firm was well-known, a place she had heard about in business circles, though she'd never dreamed of working there. This was a rare opportunity, one she couldn't easily dismiss.

"That's... very generous of you," she stammered, gathering her composure. "I didn't expect such an offer."

He smiled faintly, his eyes never leaving hers. "I see potential in you, Olivia. I think you'd find the experience valuable."

Professor Hayes nodded, glancing between them. "This could be a wonderful start to your career, Olivia. Alexander has taken a personal interest in your development, and I think it's an incredible opportunity."

Olivia looked down, her mind racing. An internship with Alexander's firm was more than just an opportunity-it was a fast track into the world of high finance and corporate success. But it was also intimidating. The thought of being around him, someone who held so much influence and power, made her heart beat faster with both excitement and a touch of unease.

She lifted her gaze, meeting his eyes. "I... I'd be honored, Mr. Cross."

His smile deepened, a flicker of satisfaction flashing across his face. "I'm glad to hear it. And please, call me Alexander."

Professor Hayes clapped his hands together, beaming. "Excellent! I'll help you finalize the paperwork, Olivia. Alexander's firm is based downtown, so you'll have access to some of the best resources and mentors available."

Olivia nodded, still feeling as if she were in a dream. "Thank you both. I... I'm really grateful for this chance."

Alexander's eyes lingered on her, his gaze as intense as it had been yesterday. "I'll have my assistant reach out to you with the details. We'll start with a part-time schedule that accommodates your classes." He stepped closer, extending his hand. "Welcome aboard, Olivia."

She reached out, shaking his hand, and was surprised by the warmth of his grip, firm yet gentle. His eyes held hers a beat longer than expected, and she felt a flutter in her stomach, a feeling she couldn't quite name.

---

The next few days passed in a blur. Olivia received an official email with her start date, her role, and a list of onboarding materials. She had to rearrange her study schedule, fit in extra hours of reading, and prepare for the challenges she knew were coming.

On her first day at the firm, she entered the gleaming high-rise downtown, feeling dwarfed by the sheer scale of it. The lobby was grand, filled with polished marble and modern art pieces. Olivia took a deep breath, adjusting the strap on her shoulder bag as she approached the front desk.

"Olivia Brooks?" the receptionist greeted her with a smile. "Welcome. Mr. Cross is expecting you. His office is on the top floor."

She nodded, following the receptionist's directions to the elevator, her heart pounding as she pressed the button for the top floor. The ride up was quiet, the soft hum of the elevator making her more aware of her own nervous breathing. She replayed the encouraging words Emily had given her that morning, assuring her that she was more than capable of handling this.

When the elevator doors opened, she stepped into a quiet, luxurious hallway with floor-to-ceiling windows framing a sweeping view of the city skyline. At the end of the hall was a sleek glass door marked with Alexander Cross's name. She took a steadying breath before pushing it open.

Inside, she found Alexander waiting, looking up from a set of papers on his desk. His office was expansive, with minimalist decor, cool tones, and a large window that seemed to make the city stretch endlessly beyond him. The light streaming in highlighted his sharp features, giving him an almost intimidating presence.

"Olivia," he greeted, standing as she entered. "Glad to see you made it. How are you feeling?"

"A little nervous," she admitted with a small laugh, hoping her honesty would mask her anxiety. "But also very excited."

He smiled, gesturing for her to take a seat. "There's nothing wrong with nerves. They keep you sharp." He leaned back, studying her with that familiar, intent gaze. "This internship will be challenging, but if you commit, I believe you'll do very well here."

She nodded, eager to prove herself. "I'll work hard. I want to learn as much as I can."

"That's exactly the attitude we're looking for," he replied. "I have high expectations, Olivia, but I also know you're capable of meeting them."

He proceeded to give her an overview of her role. She would be shadowing some of the senior analysts, assisting with market research, and sitting in on client meetings. As he spoke, Olivia felt a mixture of intimidation and excitement; every task seemed beyond her, yet each sounded thrilling, a glimpse into the world she'd always aspired to join.

As they wrapped up the meeting, Alexander's expression softened, almost as if he'd set aside the professional facade. "If you ever have any questions or concerns, my door is open. Don't hesitate to reach out."

"Thank you, Alexander," she replied, feeling a warmth at the casual use of his first name. She could see why people were drawn to him. Beneath the sharp intelligence and confidence, there was a gentleness, a way of making her feel seen and valued.

Chapter 3 Shattered Illusion

It was only her third week at the firm, and Olivia was already feeling the intensity of the fast-paced world she'd been thrown into. Late nights and early mornings had become routine, and she was doing her best to absorb every bit of knowledge, determined not to let the opportunity slip by.

Today, she'd spent hours combing through financial reports and drafting her first proposal, eager to impress Alexander. She knew he was expecting it by the end of the day, so she hurried to his office, the folder clutched in her hands. She paused outside his door, taking a deep breath to steady herself before knocking.

But as she raised her hand to knock, she heard faint laughter coming from inside. She froze, her hand hovering mid-air, curiosity getting the better of her. Alexander was speaking, his voice lower, a casual tone she'd never heard him use before.

A second voice responded-female, with a flirtatious edge to it. Olivia's brows knitted together as she tried to make sense of what she was hearing. She knew his assistant, Rebecca, was in his office frequently, but this sounded different. More intimate.

Her instinct was to walk away, but a strange urge made her stay. Slowly, she turned the handle, pushing the door open just a crack, enough to peek inside without being noticed.

The scene that met her eyes stopped her cold.

There, behind his desk, Alexander leaned back in his chair, his sleeves rolled up, an uncharacteristic smirk on his face. Rebecca was perched on the edge of his desk, leaning in close to him. One of her hands rested on his shoulder, and her other hand was smoothing over his tie, fingers playing with the fabric in a way that was unmistakably suggestive.

"Alex, you can't keep me waiting like this," she murmured, her voice soft, almost teasing.

Olivia's heart thudded in her chest, each beat echoing louder in her ears as she took in the scene. Alexander reached out, his hand moving to Rebecca's waist, drawing her closer. The way he looked at her, his gaze heavy with intent, was a look Olivia had never seen before-a stark contrast to the composed, professional demeanor he showed the world.

He chuckled, his voice low and filled with amusement. "I never promised you patience was part of the deal, Rebecca."

They both laughed softly, their voices overlapping in a way that felt too intimate for an office space. Olivia's breath caught, a cold wave of disbelief washing over her. She felt a strange mixture of shock and disappointment, her mind reeling. She'd admired Alexander-seen him as a mentor, someone she'd looked up to. But this image shattered in an instant.

Just as she tried to back away, Rebecca's eyes darted toward the door, catching sight of her. Her expression quickly shifted to one of embarrassment and surprise, and she pulled back slightly.

"Olivia!" Alexander's voice cut through the silence, breaking whatever spell had held her in place. His expression was unreadable, but there was a flash of something-annoyance? embarrassment?-in his eyes as he looked at her.

"I... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt," Olivia stammered, feeling her cheeks heat up. She wanted to turn and bolt from the room, but her feet felt rooted to the floor.

Alexander straightened, adjusting his tie, his expression shifting back to its usual controlled mask. "No harm done," he said smoothly, though his tone was colder than usual. He shot a quick glance at Rebecca, who looked equally flustered. "Rebecca, we'll finish this later. I have to go over Olivia's proposal."

Rebecca quickly gathered her things, flashing Olivia a forced smile as she brushed past her and exited the office. The door closed behind her with a soft click, leaving Olivia alone with Alexander.

For a moment, there was an awkward silence, the air between them thick with tension.

"Have a seat, Olivia," Alexander said finally, his tone unreadable. He gestured to the chair across from his desk, his eyes fixed on her, studying her reaction.

Olivia moved stiffly, her mind still struggling to process what she'd just seen. She placed the folder on his desk, keeping her gaze lowered, too embarrassed to meet his eyes.

Alexander cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "I apologize if what you saw made you uncomfortable. My relationship with Rebecca is... personal, but it doesn't interfere with the work we do here."

She nodded, not trusting herself to speak. Her mind raced with questions she knew she couldn't ask. Was this normal for him? Did he often blur the lines between professional and personal relationships? And why did it bother her so much?

He continued, his voice softer, almost persuasive. "You've done excellent work, Olivia. I don't want this to affect our dynamic. You're here because of your talent, your dedication. Nothing else matters."

She nodded again, finally meeting his gaze. "Of course. I... I understand."

But she didn't understand. Not really. The man she had looked up to as a mentor, who had inspired her with his confidence and ambition, now seemed more complicated, more flawed. The image she'd built of him in her mind-the picture of a driven, focused leader-felt like it had been shattered, replaced with something darker, something she couldn't quite define.

He gestured to the folder on his desk. "Shall we get started?"

Olivia forced herself to refocus, nodding as she went over her proposal, though her voice felt distant, hollow. She explained her ideas, answered his questions, but her mind kept drifting back to the scene she'd witnessed just moments ago. The way he had looked at Rebecca, the ease with which he'd crossed professional boundaries, felt at odds with everything she thought she knew about him.

As their meeting wrapped up, Alexander's demeanor shifted back to his usual polished charm, but Olivia couldn't shake the discomfort gnawing at her. She forced a polite smile as she gathered her things, but something felt different, an invisible wall that hadn't been there before.

As she made her way back to her desk, Emily, her best friend, was waiting for her, perched on the edge of a nearby chair. She grinned, oblivious to Olivia's turmoil. "So, how did it go? Did Alexander love your proposal?"

Olivia hesitated, glancing around before lowering her voice. "He did. But, Emily... I saw something... strange."

Emily's eyes widened with intrigue. "What do you mean?"

Olivia leaned in, unsure how to explain. "I walked in on him and his assistant, Rebecca. They were... close. Really close. It felt... inappropriate."

Emily's eyes widened, and she shot a glance toward Alexander's office door. "No way! Alexander Cross, the big corporate boss, caught with his assistant? That's... unexpected. But honestly, Liv, that's how these high-powered types are. They play by their own rules."

Olivia frowned, her thoughts conflicted. "I guess. But it just feels... off. Like there's a side to him I didn't know about."

Emily shrugged. "Hey, he's human, too. Don't let it get to you. As long as he's professional with you, that's what matters."

But even as Emily's words echoed in her mind, Olivia couldn't shake the sense of discomfort that lingered. Her image of Alexander had been cracked, revealing a part of him she hadn't anticipated. And though she tried to push it aside, part of her couldn't help but wonder: What else about Alexander Cross didn't she know?
