The room was dark, cold and icky. Her lips trembled, her teeth gritted tightly while her hands continuously rubbed the sides of her arms. The place and atmosphere felt very familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.
As she was trying to figure out where she was, a loud painful groan echoed in the dark room.
Startled by the sudden sound, she took several steps backwards. She felt chills down her spine when her back touched something wet and freezing cold. Gulping in nervousness, she turned around and slowly pressed her palm against it. Assuming it to be a wall, she retrieved her hand.
The painful groans started getting louder, each one being louder than the other. Though she had no idea who it was and what was happening, she felt a strange pain in her heart.
She didn't want to but her legs automatically took a step towards the darkness. She had no control over her body, it kept moving forward and she could do nothing to stop herself.
As she was blindly walking into the darkness, a dim light dropped upon the extreme corner of the room and without thinking twice, she quickly made her way towards it.
She stopped midway when she saw a big metal door in the dimly lit corner of the room. As she slowly approached it, the painful groans became much more distinct.
Hesitating for a while, she pushed the door open only to find a man standing in the middle of the room groaning in pain.
His hands were cuffed and weighed down with several rusty chains, his legs equally bound by a pair of large iron shackles that restricted all movement.
She wanted to go inside and help him but she couldn't move her legs. They felt jammed, heavy and cemented on the floor. She wanted to say something, she wanted to scream but no sound came out her mouth. All she could feel were tears rolling down her cheeks.
She didn't know who the man was but her heart ached for him. She couldn't stop herself from crying. Every single drop of his blood which dripped on the floor felt like a dagger in her heart. She felt helpless and torn, she felt vulnerable.
Just then, someone stabbed the man with a huge sword from the back which pierced right through his chest and blood oozed out of his mouth.
"No..." she yelled but before she could thrust herself forwards, the metal door suddenly closed with a loud bang and all she could feel was her body floating and being sucked backwards into the darkness again.
"No..." Layla screamed and jerked her body forward.
"Layla -" Catheline quickly pulled her back before the big truck could run over her.
Layla hissed in pain and came out of her daze when her back hit the concrete ground. Looking around, she frowned trying to figure out what had just happened.
"You are fucking insane," Catheline groaned in pain before trying to get up.
Layla widened her eyes in shock and quickly held her friend's hand. "Oh my God Cath, what happened?"
Glaring at her, she fumed, "You are asking me what happened? Shouldn't I be the one asking you that?" Without waiting for her reply, Catheline snapped again, "You were daydreaming again Layla and if not for me, you would probably be dead by now. How many times do I have to ask you to see a doctor and do something about it?"
Getting up, Layla helped her friend stand on her feet and sighed, "It's not something that a doctor can fix Cath, it's complicated."
"How do you know that it's not curable until you actually see a legit doctor?" Catheline retorted.
"Do we have to have this conversation now? I have many appointments today." Glancing at her watch, Layla sighed, "And I am already ten minutes late."
"Uh huh thank your stupid daydreams for that. I am telling you girl, if you don't find a way to get rid of them, this is going to kill you someday."
"Well, at least you will get a chance to do the Hula Hula dance at my funeral," Layla winked at her best friend.
Smacking her head, Catheline gritted her teeth. "How many times do I have to tell you not to talk about death? You know how much I hate it."
Sticking her tongue out, Layla hooked her arms around her shoulder. "Come on now, you don't have to be so serious. I was just joking, what makes you think I'll die without attending your wedding?"
"A wedding without a groom? Yeah sure, I will marry myself."
The sudden gloominess on Catholine's face didn't go unnoticed by Layla . In order to cheer her up, she tried to change the topic. "Oh come on, you will find someone handsome and dashing."
"I don't know about mine but your handsome and dashing someone is coming towards us." She wiggled her brows before looking at the man who was rushing towards them.
"Oh God," Layla muttered before looking away, trying very hard to avoid any form of eye contact with Percy, her fellow co-worker who had been shamelessly trying to pursue her for over a year now.
"Layla ," Percy waved his hand from a distance before rushing towards her.
"Come on Layla , stop hiding your beautiful face," Catholine chuckled.
Glancing at Percy, Layla helplessly sighed, "Why is he coming here?"
"Don't be so mean and give him some face this time."
Stopping right in front of them, Percy took a few seconds to calm himself down. He had been running for quite some time now and was out of breath.
Looking at his sweaty appearance, Layla inquired, "Percy, are you okay?"
He vigorously nodded his head and answered, "Yes, I am okay but your patients are waiting for you."
Glancing at her watch, she sighed, "Yeah I am a bit late today but why are you here? Do you want something?"
"No, I just wanted to let you know that your patients are waiting for you."
Scrunching her brows, Catheline inquired, "What about your patients then?"
Widening his eyes in shock, Percy snapped, "Oh my God." Running towards the direction he came from, he yelled, "Come fast Layla , I'll see you later."
"What are you planning to do with this Romeo?" Catheline chuckled.
Shrugging her shoulders, Layla answered, "Nothing, I think I have made myself pretty clear several times. I am not ready for relationships Cath, there are many things going on in my life and I need to take care of them first."
Twenty-eight years old Layla Hercus , a resident of Elisberg city, was a therapist by profession. After losing her mother right after her birth, she was raised by her eldest aunt who was suffering from a long fatal chronic sickness. The hardships she had faced in her life had made her the strong and independent woman she was today.
Her pitch black eyes, lilac soft lips, slender eyebrows, velvety eyelashes and glossy skin made her look attractive. Her midnight black hair flowed over her shoulder and her perfectly shaped body added to her beauty.
But behind that beautiful smile and jolly character, there were secrets and some unanswered questions which Layla had been hiding for years.
"How many meetings until I can go home and take a long nap Genny?" Nathan inquired.
Checking the schedule, Genny answered, "You just have to attend one in the afternoon and that's it."
Glancing at his watch, he breathed a sigh of relief. "I have three hours in hand, that is enough to take two power naps." Placing his hand on the doorknob, he instructed, "Don't let anyone come in until someone is dying and I need to attend the funeral, okay? Especially-"
Cutting him off, she answered, "Your brother or anyone from your family." Picking up a 'DND' board from the table, she hung it on the doorknob. "I have been working here for more than three years boss, I know everything by now."
"And this is why I love you Gen, only if you weren't married." Without wasting any more time, Nathan quickly entered his office.
Taking off his blazer, he tossed it aside before cracking his knuckles. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he made his way towards his desk and grabbed a glass of water to soothe his throat.
"Are you sure water is going to help?"
Startled by the sudden appearance of someone he didn't want to see, Nathan sputtered the water all over his desk and started coughing vigorously. "Holy cow, how the fuck did you even enter my office?" Looking at the open window, he scoffed, "Nevermind."
"You won't willingly see me, I have no other choice but to force myself inside your office and in your life." Looking at his youngest brother, Darius smiled, "You don't look happy after seeing me Nathan ."
Leaning against the desk, Nathan crossed his arms in the front. "What is there to be happy about? I see you almost everyday even though I don't want to."
"No matter how much you ignore me, I will never forget my duties," Darcius answered.
"And what is that again?"
Walking towards Nathan , he stated, "To remind you who you really are and to stop you from pretending to be someone you are not."
Raising his brows, Nathan curiously inquired, "Who am I? Almost the entire Elisberg City knows who Nathan Lind is-"
"But they don't know who you really are and where you are from." When he did not say anything, Darcius added, "You are one of us brother, a cold blooded creature. You belong with us, not here amongst the humans."
Scrunching his brows, Nathan touched his forehead and frowned deeper. "What did you say again? Cold blooded? Yeah I don't think so, I am quite warm. In fact, several magazines and also women say that I am super hot."
Before Darcius could say anything, he lifted his upper lips and shoved his teeth right on his face. "Do you see anything? Like something pointed? No, right?" Pulling away, he lifted Darcius' upper lips, revealing his pointed fangs. "There they are, you have cute fangs big bro."
