Chapter 1 The Murder In Citadel

It was evening at the Citadel estate, where the elite of the city gathered for the annual masquerade ball. Laughter and music filled the air, and the grand chandelier sparkled like a thousand stars. Among the guests was the charming but enigmatic Eleanor Zaborowski, a rising star in the world of finance, known for his sharp wit and even sharper business acumen.

The clock struck midnight, the atmosphere shifted. A piercing scream echoed through the ballroom, silencing the revelers. Guests rushed to the source of the commotion, only to find Eleanor sprawled on the floor, a blood protruding from his head and chest, his mask askew. Panic ensued as the realization of murder set in.

In the corner, Simone Webster is sitting in tension, unable to move. In a moment, he knew a rapid bullet came fast; he was shot in the head from a distance afar.

The guests ran outside, and a group of armed men went inside. They weren't satisfied; they shot Eleanor in the head, and one of them cut Eleanor's index finger and took the gold ring on it. They shot again at both bodies, and blood started to spread on the floor.

They fled away from the scene. The police and ambulance were too late. A forensic team and detectives arrived to investigate.

Detective Clara is searching for leads through the phone. "The victims, Eleanor Zaborowski, a finance specialist and an investor, and Simone Webster, a real estate agent and developer, are both from well-known families and have connections to politics."

Detective Noel said, "I've already interviewed the guests. An armed group went inside and shot them both in the head. There are no traces of them, it's all planned."

Detective Clara replied, "And the security cameras were all smashed and broken. You're right."

Detective Noel said, "We have to talk to the family and any other possible connections we could find."

Detective Clara said, "I believe we're dealing with a dangerous game."

Detective Noel replied, "I believe there's more. We have to get this over as soon as possible."

The forensic team and the coroner took the body and placed it at the medical examiner facility for autopsy.

Hours pass by, both of the victims' families arrived at the police station.

Ezekiel asked, "What happened to my brother?" worried.

Detective Clara said, "Mr. Eleanor and Mr. Simone were murdered at the masquerade party in Citadel. My condolences."

Detective Noel Ramirez and Detective Clara Bennett introduced themselves properly.

Detective Noel asked, "Does your brother have any enemies at work?"

Ezekiel said, "I heard that he was having a fight about a private property with his business partners."

Detective Noel said, "We will investigate his business partners right away. And I suggest that you should not see your brother for now."

Ezekiel said, "Why so? I wanted to see my brother. He was murdered. I don't know what happened, but I want to see him."

Detective Noel commands, "Show him the way to the facility."

"Right this way, Mr. Ezekiel," Detective Clara said.

Simone's father went through the interrogation room after they left.

Mr. Robert exclaimed, "What are you doing? Instead of wasting your time asking us an open-ended question, you should find the killer now!"

Detective Noel explained, "Mr. Robert, I understand your frustration, but we need details in order for us to find these armed men and the sniper killer."

Mr. Robert said emotionally, "All I know is he's a business partner and a friend of Eleanor. Why did they kill my son? Why him? He was a good kid."

Detective Noel said, "Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Robert. We will find the killer."

Mr. Robert exclaimed, "Don't assure me, find them!"

He left and went to the examiner facility. Mr. Robert saw that Ezekiel and Jacob's faces were full of emotion and anger. When he opened Simone's sheet, he cried.

Eleanor was shot in the chest and head. He was brutally cut from his finger through arms. Simone was shot in the head and their eye sockets were opened. Their brains were both blown out.

"What did they do to deserve this?" Mr. Robert said weakly.

Detective Clara said, "We should go outside now, gentlemen. We are still going to undergo an investigation here."

They all went outside to see Detective Noel.

Detective Noel said, "Thank you for your cooperation, gentlemen. You all need to rest for now. We will update tomorrow about the findings."

Jacob said, "My brother was a good man. He never had any enemies until the conflict with his partners. They're all in Sicilia quarters. Maybe you will find useful there."

Detective Noel said, "We will, Mr. Jacob. We're not going to sleep until this all brought to justice."

Jacob and Mr. Robert went to the parking lot. Ezekiel stopped for a second.

"If you can't find them, I will," Ezekiel said in a serious manner.

Detective Clara looked at Detective Noel; he understood Ezekiel's words.

Detective Noel said, "I understand, but please don't make any move that will risk your life."

Ezekiel left. Detectives Noel and Clara immediately ran to the car and headed to Sicilia City.

Detective Noel had a conversation with one of Eleanor's business partner. He mentioned the argument at the private property of an exclusive villa that Eleanor tried to sell, but the mafia organization refused to give it up. Eleanor and Simone successfully sold it to a multimillionaire architect, with the help of their corporate business partners and engineers.

Detective Clara explained, "It's clear that the business partners are not the cause of the foul play, instead it's the boss of the mafia gang running a casino in the Sicilia area."

The detectives gathered all the information and details. They visited the Mafia's property, but the security forbade them.

They extended a warrant for arrest but the evidence was not solid enough to prove that the mafia boss hired a sniper killer, and armed group.

It was late at night when Detective Clara woke up to a noise outside her apartment. She grabbed her gun. The situation happened so fast that she couldn't react before a tall man pushed her back inside. He shot her in the head and left a note on the kitchen counter.

The neighbors called the police and arrived at the scene. Detective Noel ran inside the apartment, and he saw his partner lifeless, with open eyes wide and blood dripping from her head.

He sat weakly on the floor and tried to gain his energy as he took support at the counter; he saw a note.

"I'm watching," the note has a drop of blood.

He took it and hid it in his pocket. The investigation to Clara's house was finished in a day. The captain from the police department announced the murder at the citadel as a closed case after a weeks of not finding solid evidence to prove it.

The mafia boss looked at Detective Noel for the very last time at the court hallway.

Detective Noel said in aggression, "What did Clara do to you? She was still young. You killed her."

The mafia boss replied, "Don't play a dangerous game if you're not prepared, Detective. Have a good day."

Detective Noel said, "This is not over. Mr. Paciano."

The mafia boss said, "I believe so."

He left with his bodyguard and lawyer. Ezekiel went with Detective Noel.

Ezekiel said in frustration, "The case is closed. How could you let it happen?!"

Detective Noel said, "They killed my partner. We gathered all the information but the killer threatened us."

Ezekiel said, "This is not the justice I want, Detective."

Detective Noel said, "I am sorry. I have a family. Clara is dead, and I can't risk another life to continue the case," struggling to explain.

Jacob and Mr. Robert walked in their direction.

Mr. Robert said, "You're a coward."

"I am. I am really sorry," Detective Noel said.

Jacob said, "You assured us for nothing, Detective. My brother and his friend were murdered and you let it slide." with a full of emotion.

Detective Noel tried to apologize, but Mr. Robert left along with Jacob.

"My condolences to Detective Clara. Even though this case is closed, I will end this," Ezekiel said.

Detective Noel said, "Ezekiel, you have a family, and they are well-known. You don't have to risk their lives."

Ezekiel asked, "What are you saying?"

"The killer threatened me and left a note."

Detective Noel gave the note, and Ezekiel took it.

Detective Noel said, "Don't do it. It's for your sake and for your family."

Ezekiel left without a word. Detective Noel went outside as he was about to go to the car. A small dot of red was focused on his chest. He stood still and slowly went inside. The sniper killer was at the other part of the building watching his moves silently.

The murder spread all over the media, and the news shocked the people of Sicilia City.

Chapter 2 Sicilia City

The sun was setting over the city of Sicilia, casting long shadows on the pavement as Lieutenant Kara Blanco strolled down Main Street. Fresh from a deployment overseas, she was eager to reconnect with the familiar sights and sounds of home. The air was filled with the scent of grilled burgers from a nearby diner, and laughter echoed from a group of children playing in the park.

When she approached the town square, a sudden commotion caught her attention. A crowd had gathered, their voices rising in a cacophony of anger and fear. Kara's instincts kicked in.

Pushing through the throng, she reached the front of the crowd. There, she saw a young man, no older than twenty, being cornered by two burly figures. The man's face was pale, and his hands trembled as he tried to reason with them.

"I didn't mean to bump into you! It was an accident!" he pleaded.

The larger of the two men sneered, shoving the young man back against a wall. "You think you can just walk away? You owe us for that, punk!"

Kara's face says it all. She recognizes the signs of a bullying situation. She steps forward.

"Hey! Back off!" she called out, her voice steady and commanding.

The crowd turned to look at her, a mix of surprise and hope in their eyes. The two men paused, sizing up the newcomer. "And who are you?" the second man spat, taking a step toward Kara.

"I'm Lieutenant Kara Blanco, and I suggest you let him go," she replied, standing tall. The uniform she wore, though slightly worn, still held an air of authority.

The first man laughed, but there was a hint of uncertainty in his eyes. "What are you going to do about it, soldier?"

Kara took a deep breath, assessing the situation. She knew that escalating the confrontation could lead to violence, but she also understood that standing down would mean allowing injustice to prevail. "I'm not looking for a fight," she said calmly. "But I won't let you intimidate this kid. Walk away now, and no one gets hurt."

The crowd held its breath, tension thick in the air. The two men exchanged glances, weighing their options. Finally, the larger one scoffed, "You think you're tough because you wear that uniform? This isn't the battlefield!"

"No," Kara replied, his voice unwavering. "But I know how to stand up for what's right. You have a choice: walk away or face the consequences."

The second man hesitated, and in that moment, the crowd began to murmur in support of Kara. The young man, emboldened by the major's presence, straightened up. "I didn't do anything wrong," he said, his voice gaining strength.

With a final glare, the two men backed off, muttering curses under their breath as they retreated into the shadows of the alley. The crowd erupted in applause, relief washing over them.

Kara turned to the young man, who was visibly shaken but grateful. "Are you okay?" she asked, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"Yeah, thanks to you," the young man replied, his voice still shaky. "I thought they were going to hurt me."

"Just remember, you're not alone," Kara said, glancing around at the crowd that had gathered. "We all have a responsibility to look out for one another."

The crowd began to disperse. Kara felt a sense of fulfillment wash over her. She continued her walk down Main Street.

She was about to cross another street when the two men came back.

The first man said, "Soldier, you've made a big mistake. The kid took something from us, and you will pay for it," and took a step that made Kara back off in the alley.

Kara said with authority, "I've warned you, I don't need trouble. Let's settle this."

"Well, you're crossing into our territory. You have a good shape, maybe that's enough." The second man said.

He was about to touch Kara when a mysterious man punched him right in the face.

The two men were shocked by what they were seeing. It was a tall man in a full black formal suit with a silver gun symbol placed on his left chest.

"Mr. Pablo, we didn't know that you would visit here," the first man said, shaking in fear.

"You've made a big mistake in your life," he said in a serious manner.

"My apologies, Mr. Pablo. I will not do it again," the second man said, holding his jaw in pain.

"Good." He looked at them and they walked right away.

"That's impressive. They look scared of you." she said, and they shake hands. "I'm Kara."

"Name is Pablo," he said and smiled.

"Yeah, the guy said your name, Mr. Pablo," she said.

"Where are you heading?" He asked.

"At the market, I'm going to buy my grocery list," she said.

Pablo said, "I'm going there too, I mean, I'm going to buy something," and they started to walk.

Kara said, "Cool, let's go together then," and smiled again.

"You have a pretty smile." Pablo whispered.

Kara said, "I heard that. Well, thank you. You know, you're tall though and you have a strong physique."

"That's too much compliment," he said.

Kara said, "Everybody is going to say what I said to you."

They arrived at the market and went inside the grocery store. Kara walked to the meat section and took beef and chicken wings. Pablo was standing next to her.

Kara asked, "Do you like fried chicken wings?" while searching in the refrigerator.

Pablo said, "My father used to serve it for me and for my brothers."

Kara asked, "So he isn't doing it anymore?"

Pablo said, "It's just on occasions. He's a busy man."

Kara said, "You know my dad runs a chicken shop nearby here. It's called Cluckin' Good Chicken downtown."

Pablo said, "That's a good shop name."

She said, "I thought at first it was funny, but customers love it, so my dad made it a landmark." Then she took the final poultry chicken.

They went to the seasoning aisle.

Kara asked, "Aren't you going to buy something?"

He said, "I forgot what I'm going to buy," and slightly smiled.

Kara asked, "You're not good at lying. I can tell."

He said, "I remember now, I'll be back."

"Good luck." She replied.

Pablo is back holding a box of apples.

"You're a healthy person. Meanwhile, I bought a whole chicken wings," Kara said.

After paying, they walked through the subway station.

Kara said, "Do you want to go to Cluckin' Good Chicken? It's on me."

Pablo said, "Sure," quickly.

Kara said, "I'll warn you, if you taste the fried chicken wings there, you will go back again."

They arrived at Kara's father's small shop. It's a neat and friendly environment. Kara introduced Pablo to Mr. Kabir, a kind man and Kara's father, along with his chef, aunt, and uncle.

They talked with Pablo while Kara just watched them laughing together about their dad's joke.

Mr. Kabir said, "It was nice meeting you, Pablo."

Pablo said, "Thank you for the food, Mr. Kabir. I will visit again."

Nigel the chef said, "Sure you will."

Uncle Karter said, "Be safe, Mr. Pablo," and gave him a box of chicken wings.

Aunt Aamara said, "You and my niece look good together, Mr. Pablo."

They laughed, and Aunt Amara pushed Uncle Karter, which made him lose balance.

Kara said, "Take care, Pablo."

He gazed at her softly and smiled.

They accompanied Pablo outside and said goodbye. Before he left, he gave the box of apples to them.

Kara looked at Pablo, and he just smiled. She saw Pablo go inside the car parked nearby. For a second, she was curious, but then she continued to walk inside the shop without bothering about it.

Chapter 3 Motion To Reopen

Detectives Warren Alistair and Franz Palermo had seen their fair share of cases, but none haunted them quite like the unsolved murder in Citadel. The young businessmen had been found dead in the masquerade party seven years ago, their life cut short under mysterious circumstances. The case had been closed, labeled as a tragic accident, but whispers of foul play lingered in the air like a ghost.

Warren, a meticulous investigator with a keen eye for detail, had always felt that something was amiss. Franz, his partner, was a detective with a knack for reading people. Together, they made a formidable team, and the unresolved nature of Citadel's case gnawed at them both.

On a rainy afternoon, as they sifted through old case files in the dimly lit precinct, Warren stumbled upon records of the one who was investigated for the murder.

"Franz, look at this," Warren, his voice tinged with excitement. "This could be the detective who retired."

Franz leaned over his shoulder, studying the records. "We need to talk to Detective Noel, he might have information that could help us."

The next day, they visited Noel's house, a man in his fifties, greeted them with a charming smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. As they introduced themselves and explained their purpose, Warren noticed a flicker of unease cross his face.

"It was a foul play," Noel said, his voice low but guarded. "Their death was a tragedy. I had nothing to do with it."

Warren and Franz exchanged glances, sensing the tension in the air. "We're not here to accuse you, Detective Ramirez," Franz said, his tone calm. "We just want to understand what happened that night."

Noel invited them inside the house and he took a tea from the kitchen table.

Noel leaned back in his chair, his expression shifting from miserable to curiosity. "You think you can dig up something new after all this time?"

"We believe justice deserves another look," Warren interjected. "Can you walk us through your investigation?"

Noel sighed, rubbing his temples. "Fine. But I'll warn you, it's a tangled web. Eleanor and Simone were murdered at the Citadel, there's a masquerade ball, and the evidence pointed to a mafia boss, Paciano Marquez. He had a motive-land dispute. But I always felt there was more to it."

Noel recounted the details, Warren and Franz listened intently. They learned about Eleonor and Simone's tumultuous land dispute between the mafia organization in the city of Sicilia.

"Do you still have the evidence?" Franz asked, his mind racing with possibilities.

Noel nodded, pulling out a box filled with old case files and evidence bags. "It's all here. But be careful-sometimes the truth is more dangerous than you think."

With the evidence in hand, Warren and Franz began their own investigation. They bid a goodbye to Detective Noel.

Weeks had passed, the detectives tirelessly pieced the evidence together.

"Do you remember the Clara case? She's the detective too who investigate the murder at citadel." Franz said, his fingers tracing the edge of a faded file. The name was etched in his mind, a haunting reminder of a murder that had shaken the police department seven years prior. The young woman detective had been found in her apartment, the circumstances surrounding her death shrouded in mystery.

Warren nodded, his brow furrowing. "Yeah, she's Detective Noel's partner. It was ruled a robbery gone wrong, but something about it never sat right with me. The evidence felt... incomplete."

"Exactly," Franz replied, his eyes lighting up with determination. "I think it's time we revisit it. We owe it to Detective Clara to find the truth."

With a shared sense of purpose, they decided to reach out again to Detective Noel Ramirez as he was the lead investigator on the original case.

They hoped he would be willing to share his insights.

The next day, they met Noel at a small café, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingling with the sound of clinking cups. Noel, sitting with a weary expression, greeted them with a nod. "What brings you two here?"

"We want to talk about the Clara case," Warren said, his voice steady. "We believe there's more to it than what was concluded."

Noel seems scared and looking out to his surroundings. He stood up to ran outside and left. Warren and Franz chased him and they caught Noel hiding in fear through his car.

"He's watching," Noel said trembling and devastated.

"Detective Ramirez, no one's watching us. What do you mean?" Warren asked calmly.

"Can we continue our conversation to your house, Detective Ramirez? If you're not feel safe here, we could talk to your place." Franz said calming him down.

Noel nodded. They went at his house.

"I am sorry about earlier." Noel said.

"No need to apologize, Detective. We understand." Warren said and sat down.

"She was my partner. She's still too young to left this world." Noel said in a low voice but full of emotion.

"I am sorry to hear that, Detective Ramirez. It must been hard for you." Warren said.

"She was murdered by the same killer of the citadel case." Noel said and reached his inhaler. "But our senior ruled it as a failed robbery, I didn't got a chance to proceed the investigation. The higher ups dismissed the case." He continued.

"Now I get it. The killer plans to murder Detective Clara because she's having a good lead, am I catching?" Franz asked, as he took a files.

"You're right. Clara is smart, she figured it out that the mafia boss is involved at murder in citadel." Noel said.

"You know what I'm thinking? The mafia is surely had a strong connection at seniors department. They just closed the case like there's nothing happened." Warren said.

"We're dealing with a high profile people, Detectives. This is not a game. Always be careful and tried not to catch any attention." Noel said.

"How'd you know that it was the same killer?" Franz asked.

"The killer left a note." Noel said and took a yellow paper with blood on it.

Warren keep the note at his pocket.

"Take care of yourselves, the killer is watching us." Noel said with fear in his eyes.

"We will, Detective Ramirez. Thank you for your cooperation." Warren said.

"Justice always prevail, Detective." Franz said.

They left and went back at their department. Detective Warren and Franz started the investigation and reopen the case with Board has already rendered a decision to consider new facts and evidence in both cases.
