Unwanted Son, Cherished Groom

Author: : Roldan Mccartney
Genre: Sci-fi
The Preston family mansion was cold, even in summer, a stark reminder that despite being their long-lost son, I was an intruder. My adoptive brother Liam, the golden child, introduced me to the opulent life with a sneer, constant humiliation, and a cruel challenge: a series of contests to prove my worth, threatening to send me back to the gutter if I lost. My biological parents, more concerned with appearances, stood by, silently endorsing my torment as I faced certain defeat, their indifference a deeper cut than Liam' s malice. The ultimate blow came when my college girlfriend Chloe, my rock and only comfort, revealed her true colors: she was using me as a pawn to manipulate Liam, arranging for me to be discarded and married off to a dying heiress. Heartbroken and empty, with nothing left to lose, I made a choice so desperate, so reckless, yet utterly mine: I would take Liam' s place at the altar, stepping into a world of unknown dangers, but finally, on my own terms.

Heartbroken and empty, with nothing left to lose, I made a choice so desperate, so reckless, yet utterly mine: I would take Liam' s place at the altar, stepping into a world of unknown dangers, but finally, on my own terms.

Chapter 1

The Preston family mansion was cold, even in the middle of summer. Marble floors echoed with every step, and the air smelled of old money and lemon polish. It had been a month since they found me, Ethan Miller, the aspiring musician from a foster home, and told me I was their long-lost son. I was supposed to feel like I' d won the lottery, but I just felt like an intruder.

Especially when Liam was around. Liam, my adoptive brother, the one who had always been the golden child, now looked at me like I was something he' d scraped off his shoe. He stood in the grand living room, a smirk playing on his lips, his arms crossed over his expensive suit.

"So, Ethan," he said, his voice dripping with condescension. "Enjoying the good life? It must be a nice change from... wherever you came from."

My biological parents, Mr. and Mrs. Preston, shifted uncomfortably on the velvet sofa. They wanted a happy family, a perfect picture, but Liam' s jealousy was a crack running right through the middle of it.

"It' s different," I said, keeping my voice even. I just wanted a family, a real one. I was willing to ignore the insults for it.

"I bet it is," Liam laughed, a short, ugly sound. "But you haven' t earned any of it. You just showed up. I' ve been here my whole life, building the Preston name."

He pushed himself off the wall and walked toward me, circling me like a predator. "I have a proposal. To prove you actually belong here, that you' re not just some charity case who got lucky with a DNA test."

"Liam, stop it," Mrs. Preston said weakly, but her husband put a hand on her arm, silencing her. He was watching us, his face a cold, calculating mask.

"I challenge you," Liam announced, his voice loud in the cavernous room. "A series of nine contests. Music, business, anything I choose. If you win, I' ll accept you. I' ll even call you my brother. But if you lose..." He leaned in close, his breath hot on my ear. "You disappear. You go back to the gutter you crawled out of, and you never contact this family again. We' ll even pay you to make sure of it."

My stomach turned. It was a cruel, impossible game designed to humiliate me and kick me out. I looked at my parents, hoping they would intervene, but they just stared back, their expressions unreadable. They weren't going to help me. In their eyes, I was a problem to be solved, and this was Liam' s solution. The longing for their approval, for a place to belong, was a physical ache in my chest.

"Fine," I heard myself say. "I agree."

The contests were a nightmare. Liam made me compete in things he knew I had no experience in, from stock market simulations to polo matches. I lost one after another, and with each loss, the family' s disappointment grew thicker. My only comfort was Chloe Davis, my girlfriend from college. She was my rock, always there with a supportive smile and a gentle touch, telling me I was more than my losses.

We were down to the ninth and final contest. Liam, confident in his victory, decided to make it personal. He cornered us in the university' s music wing, where I spent most of my time. He didn' t even look at me, his eyes were fixed on Chloe.

"Chloe, you' re a talented singer," he began, his voice smooth and persuasive. "But Ethan can' t give you the platform you deserve. I can. I' m offering you a lucrative recording contract. Be my exclusive muse. I' ll make you a star. All you have to do is leave him."

He was trying to buy her, right in front of me. It was the ultimate humiliation. I felt a surge of rage, but before I could say anything, Chloe laughed. It was a clear, beautiful sound.

She looked at Liam with a knowing smile that made him falter. "Thank you for the offer, Liam, but my integrity isn' t for sale. And my heart certainly isn' t. I' m with the man I love." She took my hand, her fingers warm and reassuring. "Ethan."

The look on Liam' s face was pure fury. He had lost control, and he couldn' t stand it. He stormed off without another word. That night, we heard he' d completely trashed his home recording studio in a fit of rage. Then came the shocking news: he had impulsively agreed to an arranged marriage with Sofia Rossi, the enigmatic heiress to a notorious underworld family. The Prestons were panicked, but they saw it as a powerful business alliance they couldn't refuse.

The night before the wedding, I felt a small flicker of hope. Maybe with Liam focused on his new life, I could finally find my place. I had spent my last dollars on a simple, handmade ring for Chloe. I wanted to propose, to solidify the one good thing in my life.

I walked toward her apartment, the small ring box feeling heavy in my pocket. As I neared her door, I heard voices from inside. I stopped, not wanting to interrupt.

"The plan is working perfectly, Ms. Davis," a man' s voice said, sounding formal and deferential. "Liam Preston is cornered. His impulsive marriage to Sofia Rossi is the final nail in his coffin. Once he' s married into the Rossi family, we can leverage their influence to gain complete control over him and his assets."

My blood ran cold. Ms. Davis?

Then I heard Chloe' s voice, but it wasn' t the warm, sweet voice I knew. It was cold, sharp, and utterly ruthless. "Good. Make sure the wedding goes ahead without any issues. And one more thing. Ethan Miller. He' s served his purpose as a pawn. On the day of the wedding, have him delivered discreetly to the Rossi family compound. Tell them he' s a wedding gift."

My heart stopped.

"A gift, Ms. Davis?" the assistant asked, confused.

"A replacement," Chloe corrected, her voice dripping with ice. "Liam is too volatile, too stupid. He' s more useful to me broken and indebted. But the Rossi family needs a groom to bring their dying heiress good fortune. Ethan will do. His presence will temper Liam, keep him off balance. And I need to maintain my cover as his loving, heartbroken girlfriend for a little while longer. Don' t let anyone know I' m behind this. Now go."

I leaned against the wall, the world spinning around me. The ring box fell from my trembling hand and clattered on the floor. Every memory I had of Chloe-her smiles, her hugs, her words of encouragement-was a lie. She hadn't been supporting me, she had been using me. I was a tool to manipulate Liam, a stepping stone in her own twisted game for power. The betrayal was so complete, so devastating, it felt like it hollowed me out from the inside.

Heartbroken and empty, I stumbled away from her door. I pulled out my phone, my fingers numb. I didn' t call Chloe. I didn' t call the Prestons. I texted my manager, the only person who had ever been straight with me.

My message was short. I didn' t have the strength for anything more.

"Liam' s arranged marriage with Sofia Rossi. I' m taking his place. Make it happen."

Chapter 2

The decision to replace Liam was made in a fog of pain, but the morning after, a cold clarity settled in. I was done. Done with the Prestons, done with their manipulative games, and most of all, done with Chloe. I would walk into that marriage with Sofia Rossi, a woman I' d never met, a woman tied to the criminal underworld, just to escape the hell my life had become. It was a desperate, reckless move, but it was mine. For the first time since being "found" by my biological family, I was making a choice for myself, not to please them.

I remembered the day I was officially welcomed into the Preston family. It wasn' t a warm homecoming, it was a press conference. Mr. and Mrs. Preston stood beside me, their smiles stiff and practiced for the cameras, while they told the world about their long-lost son. They had adopted me years ago from the foster system, the same as Liam. We grew up as brothers, always competing for their attention. But I was always second best. Liam was charming, athletic, and ruthless, everything my adoptive parents valued. I was quiet, artistic, and preferred a guitar to a boardroom.

Then the DNA results came back from a routine medical check. A one-in-a-million quirk of fate revealed that I, the overlooked adopted son, was actually their biological child, lost in a hospital mix-up at birth. Liam, their perfect son, was not.

The revelation didn't bring me closer to them. It made everything worse. They showered me with gifts and money, trying to buy back the years they' d lost, but their affection felt hollow. It was all for show. They were more concerned with the family legacy and the story of their returned heir than with me as a person. For Liam, it was a catastrophic blow to his ego. His entire identity was built on being the Preston heir. Now, he saw me as a usurper, a living reminder that he was, in their eyes, a replacement.

His cruelty, which had always been a string of casual insults and dismissals, sharpened into a weapon. He didn't just compete with me, he sought to destroy everything I cared about. The nine contests were the culmination of this. He took a song I wrote for my high school graduation and passed it off as his own, winning a local competition. My parents praised his "natural talent." He found out about a small scholarship I was trying to get for a summer music program and made a massive donation to the school, on the condition that they give the spot to someone else. My parents called it his "generous spirit."

And through it all, they let it happen. Mrs. Preston would look at me with a flicker of guilt before turning to soothe Liam' s latest manufactured crisis. Mr. Preston would just tell me to be stronger, to learn to fight for what I want, as if this was some kind of corporate training exercise. They sacrificed my well-being for Liam' s feelings, for the sake of a peaceful family image, over and over again.

After overhearing Chloe' s conversation, I felt the last bit of hope inside me die. The one person I thought was on my side, the one relationship I treasured, was the most profound betrayal of all. I sat in my small, impersonal room in the Preston mansion, the silence pressing in on me. I was completely and utterly alone.

It was in that moment of absolute despair that something new appeared. It wasn't a sound or a light, but a presence in my mind, a clear, calm interface overlaying my vision.

[System Activated. Host identified: Ethan Miller.]

[Binding to new Target: Sofia Rossi. Objective: Secure her affection and ensure her well-being.]

[Previous Target: Chloe Davis. Unbinding initiated. WARNING: Unbinding from a host with dark affinity will result in severe backlash. Chloe Davis will suffer the consequences of her own manipulative energy.]

I stared at the words floating in the air, my heart pounding. A system? What was this? Was I going crazy?

[System analysis: Chloe Davis approached you two years ago. Her initial affection rating was 7%. Her objective was to use your latent "good fortune" energy to get close to the Preston family and manipulate Liam Preston. You were a tool.]

It all clicked into place. The way Chloe had sought me out in college, her seemingly instant devotion, her constant presence during my struggles with the Prestons. It was all calculated. The system explained that she was a minor player in a shadowy organization, someone who used people with special auras, like me, to achieve her goals. My "good fortune" was the reason the Rossi family, known for their belief in such things, wanted a marriage alliance. It was why they were willing to marry their dying heiress to a Preston son-to save her life.

And Chloe, in her ruthless ambition, had decided to swap the grooms. She wanted Liam indebted to her, and me out of the way, married off to a dying woman. The system revealed her true identity: she wasn't just a cunning college student, she was a known operative in the underworld, feared for her ability to manipulate and destroy people from the inside out. The sweet girl I loved didn' t exist. She was a monster wearing a beautiful mask.

The initial shock gave way to a cold, burning anger. I wasn't just a victim anymore. This system, whatever it was, gave me knowledge. It gave me a chance.

[New Mission: Marry Sofia Rossi. Reward: Complete separation from the Preston family and a new identity.]

I didn't hesitate. This was my way out. I would play their game, but on my own terms. Chloe wanted to use me as a pawn? Fine. But she had no idea that the pawn was about to be taken off her board entirely.
