Chapter 1 CHILDHOOD

*Avery*.

"Luca! ¡Come eat!", yelled Anya from her porch. But eight-year-old Luca and I were too focused on our game to pay attention. The sun bathed us in its warm, golden glow as we continued our intense match of tag, racing around the backyard. Laughter and excitement filled the air, and the world felt like an endless playground for two young adventurers. "Luca! I'll try asking nicely again!" Anya yelled once more. Even when she was scolding him, she sounded loving.

We rushed outside, our hearts pounding with the exhilaration of the game. My mother, Andria, was already there, assisting with removing the dish from the oven. My mom was stunning with her tan skin and black hair, her presence exuding warmth and love. She made the perfect bestie for Anya, a tall redhead with a gorgeous complexion and refined features. They appeared to be a great match, sharing not only friendship but also the unique bond of raising children in a world where secrets and mysteries lurked.

"What's for lunch?" I asked, my stomach grumbling in response to the delicious aroma that enveloped the backyard.

"Just food," my mom joked in reply, her playful smile lighting up her face.

We sat at the table and enjoyed the casserole that Anya and my mother had made. They drank wine while Luca and I had grapefruit juice, sipping it with exaggerated seriousness as if it were the finest wine. Our mothers chatted like close allies, their laughter and anecdotes filling the air. Luca and I occasionally overheard the names of our fathers in their conversations, a reminder of the responsibilities that lay ahead for us.

After eating, we went back to the pond in the backyard and played until the sun went down. When we became too exhausted to continue, we lay on the grass and gazed at the sky, while our mothers sat on the porch, their voices blending with the evening breeze.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" asked Luca, his gaze fixed on the first stars that began to twinkle in the evening sky.

"I don't know. I don't think about that," I said.

It was true, I never thought about the future until that day. No one at home ever inquired about it, and there was no family concern for anything too far in the future. Our world was one of tradition and destiny, where some roles were predetermined from birth. But not mine.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" I asked, turning the question back to Luca.

His gaze remained fixed on the stars. "I don't have a choice. I have to lead the Moonblood pack as our Alpha."

The weight of his words hung in the air, and I turned to look at him. Luca appeared surprisingly at ease with the situation, his young eyes holding a wisdom beyond his years.

"What do you mean? Why don't you have a choice?" I asked, curious about the world of responsibility and expectation he was born into.

Cepher, Luca's father, led our pack, the Moonblood Pack, as the Alpha. Our pack got its name from a battle fought by our ancestors centuries ago to claim this territory. Blood was shed so that we could have our own place in this vast world. This battle was so fierce that it became legendary among werewolves, giving our pack its notable name.

Luca was destined to be our Alpha, just like his father, Cepher, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather before him.

"My father is the current Alpha, and I will succeed him when he retires. When that time comes, I will take on the responsibility of leading our community and caring for our pack," he explained, his words resonating with the gravity of his future role.

At that moment, Luca spoke with remarkable maturity, despite being only eight years old. He spoke so well that it seemed like he had heard the same words every day, ingrained in his heart and soul.

"So will you become the leader because of your dad? You can't choose a different path?" I asked, a sense of curiosity and a touch of concern in my voice. I used to think that leading the pack was a voluntary decision taken by all alphas. I never thought it would be a forced destiny.

"That's okay with me," Luca said, his gaze still fixed on the stars above. "I want to be the leader."

I realized that I didn't have to go down the same path as my father, Benjamin. He was the Beta of the Alpha Cepher, and they were extremely close, as were our mothers. My dad would always accompany him and assist him in managing the pack.

At that age, I didn't fully understand their occupation, but they spent a lot of time together. My family didn't push me towards a particular job like Luca's did.

The reason for this was primarily because the Beta position was reserved for a man, although I'm not sure why. Perhaps it was an outdated rule, but I never questioned it since I had no desire to follow in my father's footsteps. Deep down, I appreciated the fact that the rule existed. It gave me the freedom to dream and explore a world beyond our pack.

As a child, I fantasized about leaving the village to live with normal people, to get to know them better, to see the world beyond our secluded territory. The idea of experiencing the unknown, of meeting humans and learning about their lives, fascinated me.

However, my grandmother reprimanded me for wanting to meet humans: "They're not on par with us. You wouldn't even have anything to talk to them about." I wasn't enthusiastic about joining them; I was only interested. The curiosity about the world beyond the pack's boundaries nagged at me, and I longed to learn more.

Wasn't Luca curious like I was?

"Why didn't you consider other options?" I inquired, genuinely curious about his perspective on the matter.

The concept of having everything pre-determined from birth was completely foreign to me.

"I'm not sure how to explain it. I just know in my heart," he said, pointing to his chest, "that I will become the pack's Alpha."

Maybe it was something in his genes, an innate calling that couldn't be denied. Maybe because he inherited the Alpha trait, his destiny seemed crystal clear. He exuded authenticity and conviction in his potential to become an exceptional leader one day.

I envisioned him as an adult, conversing with the townspeople and training the pups - reminiscent of Cepher. I wondered what kind of wolf he would be when he first transformed into one. Would he have his father's imposing presence? Or would he be sleek and delicate like his mother? Both could be deadly when needed, as my dad had recounted in his anecdotes of defending the pack.

Then, an even more important question arose in my mind: What would I be like when I finally transformed into a wolf?

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a tapestry of colors across the sky, Luca and I lay on the grass, pondering our destinies and the paths we would walk. The world of the Moonblood pack, filled with tradition and heritage, awaited us both, but it was the unknown that beckoned with its allure. The stars above whispered secrets, and we listened, eager to embrace our fates and the extraordinary journey that lay ahead.

Chapter 2 SHARING DREAMS

*Avery*.

As the years passed, the weight of responsibility gradually settled upon our shoulders, and the carefree days of childhood transformed into a world of increasing awareness. Our lives unfolded in the tranquil embrace of a small village, cocooned by the beauty of nature that surrounded us. It was an idyllic existence, one that allowed us to cherish the simple pleasures of life.

Our quaint village was nestled amidst verdant landscapes, a serene haven where the seasons flowed like chapters in a timeless story. But when the need arose, the city beckoned, its allure a two-hour drive away. My mother and I made the pilgrimage every season, venturing into the bustling streets to purchase clothing and holiday decorations, carrying a piece of the city's vibrancy back to our peaceful abode.

It was evident that those entrusted with leadership in our community bore the weight of numerous responsibilities. Their duties encompassed the well-being of the crops and livestock, ensuring they thrived and flourished, and safeguarding the town from potential external threats. The surrounding forests served as a natural fortress, their dense canopy offering protection. Only a single road pierced through the woods, and traversing it required an intimate knowledge of the terrain; otherwise, one could become lost for weeks or indefinitely, swallowed by the enigmatic depths of the wilderness.

During our childhood, we remained close to home, our excursions and games within a stone's throw of our village. As we grew, the unique gifts bestowed upon our kind began to manifest. After gaining our wolf forms, we embarked on educational journeys led by skilled instructors, honing our abilities and discovering the secrets of our wolf heritage. These excursions were both thrilling and educational, revealing the nuances of survival in our wolf forms.

Beyond our wolf training, we delved into the mysteries of the natural world, learning about the various trees and plants that flourished in our surroundings. Their nutritional and medicinal properties became familiar to us, as we developed an appreciation for the rich tapestry of life that surrounded us.

"I can't wait for the woods," Luca exclaimed with enthusiasm as he packed his belongings in his locker.

"The woods? You're not even a wolf yet!" I teased, my hand reaching for my science book from the locker.

Luca, however, radiated confidence. "My dad transformed right before he turned 18, and my mom at 18 and a half. I'm already 17, so I'm sure it will happen before the end of the year."

"I'll definitely turn into a wolf soon!" He spoke with unwavering conviction.

"But it's June now, and you won't come of age until December. Can you really transform before then?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

"Yeah, sure, I can even feel it," he replied, his voice filled with certainty. Of course, I had my doubts; it seemed improbable that one could predict their transformation with such precision. I suspected Luca's eagerness to become the Alpha of our pack had something to do with it, perhaps sparking his imagination.

"Well, I guess you can't wait to be drunk with power when you become Alpha," I joked. "How can you even feel like you're about to transform?"

"I'm serious, Ave," he said, his tone sincere. "I have dreams where a black wolf talks to me, tells me he's on his way and will be here soon."

"Is he your father?" I inquired, noting the similarity to our current Alpha, Cepher, who was also a black wolf.

"No, my father has white spots on his neck. This wolf is entirely black. I think he's my wolf, Avery. He tells me he's coming. It feels very real, and I think he means I'll be transforming soon. Sometimes, I feel him sneaking into my thoughts, as if I'm not responsible for my internal monologue."

The revelation sent shivers down my spine. Luca's vivid dreams and the profound connection he described between himself and his wolf were unlike anything I had experienced. I had not felt anxious about my impending transformation, as I understood that it would occur in due time. However, I hadn't experienced any supernatural dreams or conversations with a wolf. I felt isolated, alone with my thoughts, and it concerned me.

"Ave, are you all right?" Luca's voice broke through my contemplation.

"Yes, sure. Why?" I responded, coming out of my reverie.

"I don't know, you got a little pale all of a sudden," he observed.

"I'm fine," I assured him before stowing the science book in my backpack and heading to class.

As I walked away, Luca called out to me. "Hey, Ave!"

I turned around, facing him. "What's up?"

"It's about the fall dance, do you want to go with me?" Luca's words echoed through the hallway, capturing the attention of envious gazes from the other students. Anyone in my position would have blushed, but I knew better. Luca saw me as a friend, nothing more. It was an invitation based on friendship, not romantic interest.

"I'll think about it," I replied with a playful tone, though my heart danced with uncertainty. The truth was, I had harbored a crush on Luca for as long as I could remember. As we grew older, his confidence and charisma had only deepened my feelings. Regrettably, he didn't see me through the same lens. To protect our friendship, I had chosen to suppress my emotions and be content with the role of a friend.

For this reason, I hesitated about attending the dance with him. For Luca, it was a casual invitation, but for me, it was a glimpse into a world of possibilities and unspoken dreams. I didn't want to jeopardize our friendship by weaving fantasies that might never come true.

The days ahead were filled with contemplation and uncertainty, as the autumn dance beckoned with its promise of enchantment and magic. I stood at a crossroads, torn between the yearnings of my heart and the sanctuary of our friendship, as life in our small village continued to unfold, carrying us into the future, one step at a time.

Chapter 3 CHANGES

*Avery*.

The science teacher's voice calling my name pulled me back to reality. I had been lost in my thoughts ever since class began, replaying the conversation with Luca over and over in my mind. I felt somewhat ridiculous for dwelling on it so much, considering the nature of the question he had asked. It was just a simple invitation to the fall dance, nothing more.

As I glanced up, the teacher was still waiting for my response. "So, in the forests surrounding our territory, can we find wolfsbane?" he asked, his question mirroring the topic of the lecture.

"Um, yes," I finally managed to answer, my voice betraying my distracted state. "Wolfsbane can be found in the surrounding forests."

The teacher nodded and continued his explanation about the significance of wolfsbane in our community. It was an essential part of our environment, serving both as a valuable resource and a symbol of our pack's vigilance against potential threats. As he spoke, I couldn't help but feel that the importance of this plant was far more straightforward than the complexities of my emotions.

When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of the class, the teacher released us, and I gathered my belongings. Luca's invitation to the dance had me tied in knots, and I had yet to come to a decision. I mulled over the implications of his request, torn between my long-standing affection for him and the fear of nurturing an illusion.

*Luca*.

History class came to a close, and the bell's chime stirred me from my thoughts. I hastily gathered my books and belongings, eager to leave the classroom. However, my classmate Anna intercepted me before I could make my escape.

"Hey, Luca," she began, her voice soft and inviting.

I turned to her with a polite smile, understanding the importance of maintaining good relations with my peers, especially as I approached my destined role as Alpha of the pack. "What's up?"

She hesitated for a moment, then plunged into her question. "I was thinking... about the fall dance. Would you like to go with me?"

Anna's query didn't come as a surprise. She was the sixth girl to ask me the same thing in just a week. "I'm sorry, Anna, but I already have a date," I declined, not wanting to hurt her feelings.

"Avery?" she guessed correctly.

"Yes, I'm going with Avery," I confirmed, hoping to put an end to the conversation.

Anna, however, continued, pushing the issue. "Don't you think the dance is an opportunity, Luca?"

I sighed, growing weary of the conversation. "An opportunity for what?"

She leaned in closer, her voice a whisper. "You'll be an Alpha soon, Luca. Don't you think you should start looking for a mate? After all, every Alpha needs his Luna."

Her words were intrusive, and she was crossing a line. I took a step back, trying to maintain my composure. "My father knows yours, and he's a great man, Anna," I said firmly. "For that reason, I'll tell you nicely this time: that's none of your business."

With that, I turned and left the classroom, my thoughts swirling with the implications of what she had said. The word "Luna" resonated in my mind, and my heart clenched with an unsettling mixture of anticipation and uncertainty.

My impending transformation into a werewolf was drawing near, and with it came the knowledge that I would soon assume my destined role as Alpha. My father had spoken often about his desire to retire, and I knew I would be expected to take his place, leading the Moonblood Pack. It was a responsibility I was prepared to embrace, but it also brought new considerations into my life.

As my wolf had been warning me, my transformation was imminent, and my wolf was growing stronger within me. With this transformation came the possibility of finding my mate, my other half, the one with whom I would share a deep and unique bond. My wolf had always been strong-willed, and I couldn't help but think that he might be just as assertive when it came to choosing a mate.

The concept of a mate had been swirling in my head, and I couldn't help but imagine what she might be like. As I heard the word "Luna," the image of Avery, my childhood friend, flashed before me. I pictured her in a white dress, the one she often wore for special events, her brown hair cascading over her shoulders, and the tiny mole on her collarbone accentuating her delicate features.

My feelings for Avery had been deep and unwavering for as long as I could remember. We had been inseparable since childhood, sharing every joy and challenge that life had thrown our way. But as I contemplated the concept of a mate and my impending transformation, I couldn't ignore the growing distance between us in recent months.

While the certainty of my future as the Alpha of the Moonblood Pack was clear, there were other uncertainties that weighed heavily on my heart, leaving me in a state of conflict and introspection.
