It was a sunny day but that didn't stop the hustling and bustling in Texas, instead it reinvograted their fighting spirits to work harder.
"Mum! This is too heavy for me, you know I can't carry this much!" Alice complained to her mother as they walked to her shop.
"You wouldn't be here helping me if only you'd get a job! Do you even know your age!" Alice's mother replied angrily while opening the door to her shop. Yes, Alice clocked twenty five years old last month.
"Mum! You know that's not my fault!" Alice yelled grumpily. Alice's mother had known her daughter since birth so she didn't waste her time arguing with her. This had always been their routine every morning.
Just as Alice's mother unlocked the shop successfully, a short chubby woman popped out from God knows where.
"Aish, you've started scolding your daughter again this early morning! Cut her some slack. You know...I asked you to introduce your daughter to my son so that they'd clique but you refused. If you had accepted your daughter wouldn't be jobless now" the chubby looking woman voiced out while raising her chin high. She knew that Alice was a rare beauty but found it hard to say it aloud. She had wanted to use her unemployment to force her into marrying her son but who knew that not every poor people were the same.
Alice sighed loudly 'here comes the nosy woman again' she mumbled. Alice sniffed the air and immediately felt the urge to throw up. 'shit! This nosy woman didn't take her bath this morning. You stink.alot!' Alice yelled the last part inwardly. Normal humans wouldn't be able to catch a whiff of the nosy neighbor's scent but she was a werewolf. She had a fantastic sense of smell.
"Good morning ma'am" Alice had a small smile on her face as she greeted the woman who butted in. Alice's mother quietly laughed. Indeed, a mother would always know her child best. She knew that the smile on Alice's face was that of anger and sarcasm. Mrs. Theresa, Alice's mother, was used to her neighbor's taunt so she made no effort in acknowledging her.
The neighbor who knew that she was ignored once again had flames coming out of her ears and nose. Her face had turned red like that of lobsters. This was the sight that was very pleasing to Alice. Ever since her neighbor had turned to a trouble maker, she had always derived fun from seeing her red and flamy face.
The chubby woman stumped her feet and immediately scurried to her own shop. Alice laughed for some time before her expression turned solemn. Her mum was right, she needed to get a job as soon as possible! Their expenses has gone higher and the profits gotten from this shop wasn't even a tip of the iceberg.
She sighed loudly before helping her mum to set up the coffee shop. Though it wasn't a big shop, but there was a shelf of books that could be seen at the centre of the shop.
They had just finished setting up the shop when an average looking man walked in along side with a woman.
Alice went to welcome them and took their order. Once they had been served, Alice sat not too far away from them making their conversation very audible to her.
Just then, Alice heard them talk about a job vacancy. Her curiosity was piqued. She wanted to hear more so she immediately ran to hide behind the book shelf. The man and woman were sitting at the front of the bookshelf so they had no idea that Alice was listening in on their conversation. Alice squatted down and kept pushing herself forward. She wanted toake sure she'll clearly heat all they'd be saying. As she moved forward, she wasn't paying attention to where she was headed.
She had just taken another step when her nose came in contact with a long leg. Alice felt her head spin, her nose began bleeding and she lost consciousness. A great way to begin a new day, sigh!
Meanwhile the owner of the long leg felt something collide with his leg. He stared at the unconscious figure of the petite lady. How could she be so stupid! He sniffed the air and he realized she was also a werewolf but there was something peculiar about her scent.
Meanwhile Mrs. Theresa was going in search of Alice. By this time, Alice ought to be doing the dishes but she was no where to be found. Mrs. Theresa turned to look left and right, seeing that there was no one around, she deeply sniffed the air. She caught an unfamiliar scent in the process and her daughter's scent which was mixed with blood. Blood!
Immediately, Mrs. Theresa ran to where she suspected the scents were coming from.
Arriving at the shelf of books, she saw a tall and handsome stranger standing beside her sprawled daughter. She had expected that there'd be a pool of blood on the floor but all she saw was just a tiny drop on the floor and more droplets spilling out of her daughter's nose which made her relieved. Remembering the unfamiliar scent she had perceived, she realized that this handsome stranger was also a werewolf but why would he not call for help after seeing someone bleeding! This made her furious that she felt like venting all her bottled up anger on this stranger. She glared at the man not cowering despite the cold aura he had. Mrs. Theresa wasn't one to hide any displeasure she felt towards someone. She glared at the man for the nth time before squatting beside her daughter. Thoug, she wasn't a doctor but after confirming that her daughter was still breathing, she immediately picked her up. To humans, this was a huge feat but to werewolves, it was normal for them to lift someone as heavy as them.
Despite her old age to humans, Mrs. Theresa carried her daughter to the small spare room they had in the shop.
Meanwhile the cold Justin who had just been glared at didn't get angry and this was a surprised to him. He waved it off and then walked out of the shop while bringing out his phone from his pants pockets. While doing this, a flier fell on the floor but he was long gone to notice this. Anyone who first enter the shop would be the first to notice the flier.
In the small room of the shop....
Mrs. Theresa didn't need to be worried about her daughter cause she knew that in no time she'd wake up. All she did was to clean up the blood on her daughter's face and also stopped the bleeding.
She sat on the small wooden chair closed to the tattered bed her daughter laid on. She stared at her daughter's face and couldn't help but to remember her late husband. They both had the same features. A drop of tear slipped from her eyes but she was too lost in thought to notice this.
"Mum! Mum! I have good news!" There was a loud cry of a teenager as he barged into the room looking as agile as ever.
"Not again!" Mother Theresa sighed resignedly.
"Mum! Mum! I have good news!" There was a loud cry of a teenager as he barged into the room looking as agile as ever.
"Not again!" Mother Theresa sighed resignedly. She just had to take care of one trouble and now another had walked in.
"What is it Jacob?" The middle aged woman sighed tiredly.
The teenage boy paused in his footsteps as he stared at his unconscious sister. After some minutes, he went back to his cheerful self looking unbothered. He was used to seeing his sister unconscious most of the time. She was always doing f**lish things that could bring danger to her and despite knowing this she didn't stop. He rolled his eyes dramatically and took his eyes off her figure then turned to look at his tired mother. Just as he opened his mouth to talk, an object came flying towards him. Like he had expected this, Jacob reflexively dodged it. Ever since he had rolled his eyes at his sister, he knew she was awake and she was up to no good. He was proven right when he caught the sight of an object coming towards him from the corner of his eyes. If it were a mere human, he/she would have been hit hard on the head by the fast approaching object.
"Do you want to kill me? How could you do that to your sweet and lovely brother?" Jacob dramatically placed his hand on his chest while practicing an exaggerated breathing pattern.
"You are anything but sweet and lovely" the conscious Alice said as she comfortably sat on the bed. She glared at her younger brother and if looks could kil, the boy would be long gone. She had been awake before her brother came and her eyes were slightly opened while watching her mother who was lost in thought. The moment she heard the loud voice of her brother, like a normal behavior, her eyes rolled and she internally slapped her forehead. Her wolf was not left out of this as she also sighed loudly only to the hearing of Alice. Here he comes again!
"Oh, come on sis, you're hurting my feelings" Jacob faked a gasp and dramatically touched his chest.
"You know, you'll definitely be famous if you become an actor" Alice said as she faked a laugh. Jacob was smart enough to know that there was an incoming danger. He gradually moved to the door and held the handle preparing to run as soon as he sights any attack.
Just like he thought, Alice jumped out of the bed, wanting to pounce on her annoying brother but was immediately held by her mother. Alice had no choice but to give her mother her undivided attention.
"Quit it! Jacob, what is the good news you said you had?" Mother Theresa asked looking more energized than she formerly was. She tried to cover it up with her sterness but her two smart children had detected it. Although, she couldn't say it aloud but she was always happy anytime they argued or bantered. This showed the love they both had for each other. She knew she could never say this to their faces as this would become a daily and continuous routine for them. All she had to do whenever she was down was to listen to them banter. Unlike other children, she knew her children were special in every way. Ever since their father had died, they've taken it upon themselves to make her smile whenever she was down which was meant to be the opposite.
"Yeah about that. Mum I found this as soon as I walked into the shop. Someone might have dropped this mistakenly but since it is a huge benefit to my big headed sis over there I decided to bring it over so you both could take a look. At first I had blindly picked it up and wanted to throw it out but after catching a glimpse of its content, I refrained myself from doing so" Jacob seriously explained.
"Wow, I'm so glad you're beginning to get smart. My effort is truly not going to waste" Alice teased with a straight face. Inwardly, only God knew happy she was even if she hadn't read the flier. She was glad her brother was thoughtful and truly cared about her.
Jacob puffed his cheek in anger but soon turned into a smirk as soon as he thought of something. How dare his sister tease him!
Jacob puffed his cheek in anger but soon turned into a smirk as soon as he thought of something. How dare his sister tease him!
"Well I could say the same for you" Jacob said with a small smile gracing his face.
As soon as Alice heard this, she had the urge to beat Jacob to a pulp. D*mned brother! She growled at him and Jacob wasn't left behind cause a small babyish growl left his mouth. This made Alice laugh loudly and Jacob didn't need to be told the cause of her laughter. She was obviously making fun of his immaturity cause he was still a teenager who hasn't transform into his wolf form. The only thing he could resort to was to huff and puff loudly while glaring at her.
Mrs. Theresa smiled at her children and suddenly felt energetic more than before.
"Jacob, hand over the flier you're holding" Mrs Theresa said as she stared at Jacob. Hearing his mother's words, Jacob suddenly remembered his reason for his happy smile. He immediately handed over the flier to his mother while secretly glaring at Alice. Alice rolled her eyes at her brother's immaturity. She couldn't blame him.
"Take, Alice, read this" Mrs. Theresa handed the flier to Alice as soon as it was in her hold. Alice stared at her mother incredibly 'if you weren't going to read this then why bother collecting the flier from him?' Alice mumbled as she received the flier from her mother. Sometimes her mother was too hard to understand.
"What!!!!" As soon as Alice read the flier, she jumped off the bed while screaming and then began dancing. Jacob was frightened, he immediately moved to the back. He have heard of circumstances where people just run mad all of a sudden. Well, it wouldn't be bad to keep himself safe, Jacob thought as he scurried to the corner of the room. Meanwhile Alice was all smiles, she couldn't stop smiling and laughing even if her cheeks hurt.
Mrs. Theresa stared at her daughter emotionlessly. She wasn't surprised about her actions cause as Alice had done worse than this. She knew Alice would explain the situation to them once her dancing feat was over.
True enough, Alice danced for some time before turning to look at her mother and brother who both had different expressions. Her brother's expression was that of fear and surprise while her mother was... definitely expressionless.
"Come, come, come" Alice waved her hand at her brother while encouraging him to come closer. Meanwhile Jacob wasn't sure if his sister was in her right senses or she was just trying to deceive him. He rose to his feet and narrowed his eyes at her. Seeing that his mum wasn't bothered by his sister's attitude, he knew it was a green card so he freely walked to them.
"Mum, baby bro, the thing is...." Alice was cut off when Jacob butted in.
"I told you to stop calling me baby brother. I'm not a baby. Hmph!"
"Whatever makes you sleep at night" Alice said nonchalantly which made Jacob confused. He didn't understand the meaning of what she said but he was sure it wasn't something good. He glared at her as harsh as he could but that didn't seem to affect Alice cause she rolled her eyes at him while turning to face their mother.
"Mum, I'm sure you aren't oblivious to the most famous and richest company in the whole of Texas or should I say the world?" Alice asked as she rubbed her chin thoughtfully. Jacob and Mrs. Theresa both had question marks on their faces.
Alice noticed this and decided to go straight to the point.
"The thing is, that company is in need of a secretary for their boss and the person they need just happens to be me who also studied in that line if field" Alice said in one breath. As soon as she said this, Jacob and Mrs. Theresa both nodded their heads In understanding.
"So, to cut the story short, you're going for the interview" Mrs. Theresa said which sounded more like a question to Alice alone.
"Of course and the interview is..... tomorrow!!" Alice yelled as she stared at her brother wide eyed like he had anything to do with the printing of the flier.
"What??" Jacob asked looking surprised.
"Mum, I have to go and prepare for this interview. Pray I get this job cause if I do, that means our days of suffering are over" Alice said while handing the flier to her mother. She wore her tattered slippers and immediately walked out of the small room not until after she had ruffled Jacob's hair who glared at her retreating figure but still had a small smile on his face.
Night time came and like days before, Mrs. Theresa made no sale. Jacob assisted his mother in closing for the day. As they left, they were glad they didn't encounter that old nosy neighbor.
After walking for two hours cause they were short of money, they finally arrived home or more like the pack with aching legs. Though, they were werewolves but that didn't stop them from feeling pain when in their human forms. As they walked into the pack compound, all they got were indifferent looks from pack members who were still awake which they were already used to.
Jacob felt a panf of pain and anger in his heart but he chose to endure it cause he could do nothing.
They didn't have to work for long because their house could be seen as soon as one stepped foot into the pack. This land was given to them by their alpha who happens to be Alice's and Jacob's Uncle.
The reason their house was situated at the entrance was because the Alpha wanted them to be the first victim of any attack that would occur in the pack.
Jacob gently pushed the wooden door open. The door could collapse at any time and they had no money to buy a new one so they had to resurt to opening the door gently.
They locked the door as soon as Mrs. Theresa walked in.
Alice could be seen scribbling on papers, lost in what she was doing. She wasn't aware that she had company until her brother screamed in her hear which made her jump in her sit.
"Ooh! You guys are back. Clean yourself up and go to sleep. We are short of food" Alice said as she rubbed her brother's head. Jacob didn't complain this time cause he didn't want to disturb his mum who looked unhappy. Well, he was also unhappy but what could he do?
Thirty minutes later, everyone squeezed themselves in the small bed they had. Jacob fell asleep and so did Mrs. Theresa. Alice found it hard to sleep and her eyes were wide open till dawn.
As soon as the clock struck six, Alice rose to her feet and went to take her bath after brushing her teeth.
She dried her body and wore a old looking white shirt with a faded brown knee-length skirt paired with a brown sandal. Alice picked up the only dull looking handbag she had and kept her documents in it. She packed her long wavy waist length hair into a bun and kissed her sleeping mother and brother goodbye.
Alice walked for an hour and stood before the magnificent building of SJ Corps.
She wiped the sweat on her forehead with her handkerchief brought out of her handbag before walking into the building after getting different looks from the guards.
Alice caught sight of the receptionist as soon as she walked in. Her wolf suddenly stirred and she had this unsettling feeling.
"What do you need here?" The receptionist asked before Alice could talk. Alice knew that this was one rude receptionist but she made no comment on it.
"I'm here for the interview" Alice said curtly not bothering you exchange greetings with the rude receptionist.
"You? Interview? Anyways, sit with them" the receptionist had a look of disdain while addressing Alice. She pointed to the group or should I say thousands of women who sat by the sidelines.
Just as Alice took her seat, there was a commotion. Alice paid no heed to this as she was more anxious about the interview.
She was brought out of her thoughts when a pair of shiny shoes stood in her line of sight. She looked up at the person but before she could see his face clearly, her wolf growled, "MATE".
