"Congratulations,you're pregnant."
Emily stared blankly at the doctor, wondering if she had heard right.
"What?"
"You're pregnant." The doctor reiterated with a smile.
A ball of joy went off in her heart.
"Oh my God!! I'm pregnant..are you sure? Is this for real?"
The doctor handed over the test results to her.
"I'm sure. You're pregnant, Mrs Sterling."
She received the paper with trembling hands. It was right there.
Her eyes went over the positive remark a million times. It didn't change.
Emily jumped to her feet.
"Oh my God!! I can't believe this,I'm really pregnant."
She could feel her tears of joy threatening to spill.
The doctor only grinned at the excited woman.
"I have to tell my husband. Thank you so much."
She was almost jumping as she left the Doctor's office.
At once, she dug out her phone from her purse and dialed her husband's number.
It rang while she drummed her nails against her thighs with impatience.
One ring, two ,three and no answer.
"C'mon Wesley. Pick up" she muttered loudly.
Eager to deliver the good news, she called again.
Still no answer.
Emily sighed and scrolled through to another number.
The other end picked up on the second ring.
"Hello,Wesley Sterling's office. How can I help you?" a female voice rattled out.
"Jamie, it's me,Emily."
"Mrs Sterling." the woman answered in recognition.
"Yes, Is Wesley in?"
"No, Mr Sterling went home an hour ago."
Emily was surprised but it quickly turned to another wave of excitement.
The universe was aligning for her. It would be so much better to tell him the news in person.
"Alright.Thank you,Jamie" she said swiftly before hanging up.
It took a lot of self-control not to straight-up run towards the parking lot.
However, she managed to walk, grinning from ear to ear and not caring if people thought she was crazy.
As soon as Emily was in the safety of her car, she let out an excited scream.
It had been four years since she had married Wesley straight out of college. They had just celebrated their marriage anniversary a week ago and it was perfect.
Wesley had gone all out with the fancy dinner and expensive bracelet.
He was the perfect husband and he was about to become the perfect father.
She felt giddy. Her pregnancy was going to be the best anniversary present ever.
Emily smiled even more as she came across different billboards with Wesley's handsome face.
In bold letters, the words became replaying:
"FIVE DAYS TO THE RELEASE OF "MURDER ON THE BLOCK"."
"WATCH OUT FOR BESTSELLING AUTHOR,WESLEY- STERLING'S NEW BOOK."
The book wasn't even released yet but it had become the biggest sensation in the book community.
Fans were itching with eagerness and even the editors had predicted it was going to be his biggest book ever.
Emily felt a proud mama bear moment.
No one except her and Wesley knew she was the brain behind all his books.
Years ago, they had both met during their freshman year of college and became friends because of their shared love of books.
Emily wanted to become a famous writer one day and so did Wesley.
It didn't take long to realize they shared so much in common and most of their future dreams aligned.
Before their second year, they were joined at the hip. By the time he asked her to be his girlfriend,it was no surprise that she said yes.
Wesley submitted his first big manuscript during their final year.
They both thought it was going to be a big hit but were surprised when it was sent back with horrible criticisms.
Wesley took the fall hard and was almost drained of all his ambitions.
He stopped writing and it broke her heart to see him so broken.
Without his knowledge, she submitted her manuscript in his name.
It was accepted. The contract money changed their lives forever.
That same semester,Wesley proposed to her and they bought their first house.
Over the years, they continued the arrangement of her being his ghost writer and every single one of his books were a hit.
They had money,a nice house and a very good life. Except when his mother would frequently pop in to ask when she would give her grandkids.
Jane had always been a thorn in her flesh. Since Wesley was her only child, all she wanted were grandchildren that would carry on the family name.
Emily chuckled. Finally, the Good Lord had answered her prayers.
She couldn't wait to see the look on Jane's face when she broke the news.
The thought of her mother-in-law gave Emily a brilliant idea.
She pulled over the car to the side of the road and picked up her phone.
She giggled as she typed the message.
"Please come over to the house, I have a very important announcement to make. Love you."
She forwarded the message to her whole family including Jane.
Her heart leapt for joy when she saw Wesley's car parked outside the house.
She quickly killed her engine and ran inside, ready to spill the news.
He wasn't in the living room or the kitchen.
She jogged up the stairs towards their bedroom.
Emily was about to yell out his name when a sound made her stop in her tracks.
Just when she thought she had imagined things, she heard it again.
Her legs felt wobbly and her whole body seemed like it was about to shut down.
With each step she took, the intimate sounds got louder.
"No" she whispered to herself in disbelief.
A sense of dread fell over her. She had to be imagining things.
Wesley would never betray her.
But as Emily came to a stop in front of her bedroom door, she knew the truth was staring her in the face.
Engulfed by rage, she burst the door open, only to come face-to-face with a horror scene.
Her husband was in bed with no other person than her sister...
Emily felt paralyzed. She blinked repeatedly at the sight before her, wishing it was all a figment of her imagination.
It wasn't.
"Sophie" She managed to whisper.
Her sister stared back at her with no remorse or shame.
None of the cheaters looked shocked to have been discovered.
Emily's mind was in a whirlwind of thoughts ,trying to process everything.
Never in a million did she imagine that Wesley could cheat on her and with no other person than her blood sister.
She felt her heart ache from the betrayal.
"How....how could you?" She mumbled, the words feeling heavy in her mouth.
"Ermm....Emily,would you excuse us?We need to get dressed." Wesley blurted out.
Emily felt her mouth drop open in another wave of shock.
"What?"
Wesley repeated himself "Emily, don't make this harder than it needs to be. Go downstairs,we'll come meet you after dressing up."
Emily couldn't believe her ears. She caught them in bed and that was all he had to say.
"Emily, please go downstairs. We'll talk about this when we come down." Sophie added.
Again, she couldn't believe what she was hearing.
The cheaters were calm. Like they had done nothing wrong. Their relaxed expressions made it look like Emily was the outsider who had walked in on the couple's private time.
Her body began to burn with rage.
If she didn't leave, she was going to launch at both of them and plug out their eyes.
Emily casted them one last look before quietly walking out of the room.
Her world was spinning as she descended the stairs.
The house that was once a safe haven to her suddenly became too stuffy.
Afraid she was going to lose conscience if she stayed, Emily grabbed the car keys and bolted out of the house.
Her hands trembled as she opened the car door. She needed to run as far away as she could from the betrayal.
After everything they had gone through together, she couldn't fathom why he would do that to her.
They had a good life, they were happy. Why would he throw that away?
And with no other person than her sister.
Her mind swirled with questions.
How long had their affair been going on? Weeks, months, years?
It all felt like a dream.
She drove aimlessly for what felt like hours before she finally pulled up in front of her parents' house.
She broke down in tears.
Years of love and commitment was down the drain.
She gave up her dreams to make him happy. She built his career and this was how he chose to pay her back.
After hours of crying, Emily finally left the comfort of the car and made her way inside.
Immediately she saw her parents, she felt like breaking down again.
Both of them had a curious look on seeing her swollen face.
"Emily, what's wrong?" her mother asked in confusion.
"I caught them." the words slipped out of her lips.
"Who?" John Park asked his daughter in confusion.
She blurted out the heavy words.
"Wesley is cheating on me with Sophie."
Instead of looking shocked, John and Susan Park gave each other a knowing look.
At the same time, the doorbell rang.
Susan went to get it while John asked Emily to sit down.
Just when she began to wonder if her parents didn't believe her, Susan returned with Wesley,Sophie and Jane.
Emily jumped to her feet as soon as she saw them.
"What are they doing here?" She asked in a fit of rage.
"Quit acting like a child and sit down." her father commanded.
She stared back at him in disbelief.
"I'm acting like a child? I found my husband and sister together in bed. How should I act?"
Susan snapped at her "Don't talk to your father that way. Sit down, let's talk about this like a family."
Emily was stunned by her parents' words. Almost immediately, something seemed to click in her head.
"You knew?"
The reactions from her parents, sister, husband and mother-in-law was all the answer she needed.
She fell back on the Sofa in shock.
Her whole family knew about this affair. She had been betrayed by everyone.
Susan shamelessly said;
"Your sister and Wealey have fallen in love. Who are we to stop them? Love is natural and no one can choose who they fall in love with. The best thing you can do as a good sister is to support them."
If she wasn't still in shock from the multiple betrayals, she would have scoffed at her mother's words.
Emily wondered why she was the only one who had to be a good sister.
Her parents had always favored Sophie, but she couldn't believe they would in the situation.
Emily let out a chuckle.
What had she expected? Of course they would side with their favorite child.
After all, they had Emily to save Sophie from cancer.
She was their princess, the one they would do anything for while Emily was nothing but a spare part for her.
"Do not laugh at us, Emily. We didn't mean to fall in love."
The sound of Sophie's pretentious voice ignited a flame of rage in her.
"Shut up. You're nothing but a disgusting whore who slept with her sister's husband. You've always taken everything from me ,I guess you also had to have him."
Sophie began to shed crocodile tears while their parents began to scold her.
"How dare you talk to your sister that way?Apologize at once." John yelled at her.
Emily stared back at him with nothing but coldness.
All her life she had tried to please her parents so they could love her like they loved Sophie.
She was done. All the love she had once had for them was gone.
She rose to her feet.
"You're disgusting parents. I don't want to ever see you again in my life."
She tried to walk away but was blocked by Sophie who grabbed her arm.
"Please,Emily. Don't put your anger on Mom and Dad. Blame me instead, it is all my fault."
Emily could tell her sister was pretending. She yanked her arm free from her grip and Sophie immediately fell down.
Before Emily could react, she felt a harsh sting on her cheeks.
Wesley had slapped her.
"How dare you be so cruel?" He yelled at her.
Emily chuckled at the Irony. They had betrayed her but she was the cruel one.
He rushed to join her parents who were already helping Sophie.
Emily didn't know if she should laugh or cry.
"You're a heartless monster. How dare you push a pregnant woman? I always knew Wesley married the wrong sister." Jane yelled in her face.
Sophie was pregnant. The words replayed in her head.
"Leave, from now on you cease to be our child." John said, his eyes burning with hatred.
"Go and never come back."
All eyes were glaring at her like she was a witch.
Emily ran out of the house with tears streaming down her face.
She didn't know where she was going but she kept running.
A bright light shone directly in her eyes.
She had no time to react as the car slammed into her making fly in the air before landing hard on the ground.
The last thing she saw was the silhouette of two men running towards her.
"You're awake." A strange man in white muttered to Emily with a smile.
Emily frowned, wondering who he was and where she was.
As her vision and sense of environment became clearer, she realized she was in the hospital and the strange man was a doctor.
She tried to sit up but was stopped by the doctor.
"Please, you need all the rest you can get."
She frowned, looking around her and taking in the IV drip that was connected to her veins.
Her memory was hazy. She sought answers from the doctor.
"What happened?"
"You were involved in an accident Miss. You've been unconscious for three days."
The memories came flooding back.
She remembered walking in on her sister and husband. She remembered her parents disowning her and her running away before she was blinded by the car lights.
Emily felt a chill down her spine as she recalled the painful accident.
"I've been unconscious for three days?"
"Yes," the doctor replied,looking uncomfortable.
Emily wondered. It took a couple of minutes but she suddenly remembered.
"My baby? Is my baby fine?" She asked in a panicked tone.
He shook his head.
"I'm sorry Miss, your baby did not survive the accident."
Emily felt her heart shatter.
"No, no!" She cried out in pain.
She yanked the IV off her hand.
"I want my baby, give me my baby." She yelled out.
Two nurses ran into the room.
They stopped her from thrashing around and held her still.
"I'm sorry Miss, I have to sedate you. You're going to be fine." The doctor spoke before injecting her.
"No" She mumbled before the darkness took over her.
When she woke up hours later, she was calmer.
A few tears rushed out of her eyes as she mourned the child she never got to meet.
Four years of waiting for a miracle and it was gone because of her family's betrayal.
Emily felt nothing but hatred for her former family. She wished nothing to do with them ever again.
For her dead child she was going to build herself and never let anyone hurt her again. She was done being a spare part and a fool. From that moment on, she vowed to always choose herself.
The doctor was happy to see her in a calm state.
He felt couldn't blame her for how she reacted earlier, after all losing a child was not a small matter.
"I'm glad you're doing much better ,Miss."
"Thank you" was all she muttered.
"All your hospital bills have been cleared by the man who brought you in."
Emily remembered the silhouette she saw.
"Was he the one who hit me?"
The doctor replied "Yes. He was very sorry about the accident."
She didn't seem to care much about it.
He handed her a phone.
"Your phone was damaged in the accident. All your information was recovered and updated on this one."
Emily stared at the brand new iPhone.
"I'm really sorry for your loss." The doctor muttered again.
She nodded.
"You've recovered pretty well. All you need is a day of rest and you will be discharged. If you need anything, ring the nurses. "
As soon as he got to his office, the doctor took out his phone and dialed a number.
After the second ring, the other end picked up.
"She's awake and has recovered well."
"I'll send someone to make negotiations." a cold voice answered before the line went dead.
Emily turned on the new phone.
She was greeted by a flood of messages from her ex-family.
"Emily, do not be bitter. Quickly come and sign the divorce papers."
"Emily, please come back. I know you feel guilty for pushing me. I forgive you."
She laughed as she read more.
"Come back and sign the divorce papers so your sister can get married. It is not our family's way to give birth to a child out of wedlock."
She laughed, wondering why she was still being referred to as family when she had been disowned.
"You cannot hide forever Emily. No matter what you do, I'll still marry Sophie. She's the one I love and she's the mother of my child. Something you could never do for me."
She felt another wave of anger and quickly dialed Wesley's contact.
"Where h..." he began to talk but she cut him off.
"Where are the divorce papers? I want to sign them."
He went silent for a couple of seconds, surprised by her eagerness.
"Come to the house. Don't try to play stupid games. I'll..."
She hung up on him.
Emily wondered what she was going to wear.
She remembered the doctor had asked her to ring the nurses if she needed anything.
When the nurse came, she quickly asked about her clothes.
The nurse explained they were damaged during the accident but a new set of clothes were purchased.
It was then, she realized the hospital room had a wardrobe.
She realized she must have been in one of the VIP rooms.
Immediately, she got out of bed and grabbed the change of clothes.
"What are you doing? You can't leave Ma'am . You've not been discharged." the nurse protested.
"I have an emergency." She announced, while changing up.
The nurse tried to stop. "I'm sorry but you cannot leave ma'am. The doctor will not be pleased."
Emily buttoned her jeans before running her hands through her hair.
"Tell the doctor I left on my own. Please , can you help with any spare cash? You can put it on my hospital bills."
The nurse was hesitant.
Emily begged. "Please, I was in an accident. I had nothing on me."
The nurse pulled out some wards of cash and gave it to her.
"Please wait, let me get the doctor."
Emily received the money with a smile.
"Thank you. I'll wait."
A few minutes after the nurse left, she sneaked out of the hospital.
She pounded harshly on the door to what used to be her home.
Wesley opened the door with a frown. She pushed past him into the house.
"Where are the papers?"
Wesley eyed her suspiciously.
"Where have you been?"
She shot him a glare. "It's none of your business. Where are the damn papers?"
"Oh my God!! Emily, I'm so glad you're fine. I've been so worried about you." Sophie spoke in her fake voice.
Emily spotted the papers in her hand.
She snatched the papers, ignoring her fake sign of concern.
She hastily signed the papers and threw it back at her.
"Emily, you don't have to be this rude. Mom and dad didn't mean what they said. You can go back to the house. I've helped you pack your things."
Emily eyed her. "You can take it,just like you've taken him.I want none of it."
She began to walk away but Sophie yelled "Wait."
Emily was shocked when Sophie walked to her, waving some cash.
"What's this for?"
"I and Wesley want to get married at once. I want you to go and change your surname. It would be awkward if you're still bearing his name after we get married."
Emily was disgusted by her. "I don't need your money."
"For goodness sake Emily, take the money. You have no money or where to go. Take it and quit being proud." Wesley yelled in irritation.
Emily chuckled. "You can shove your money down your ass. I never want to see or hear from either of you again."
She stormed out of the house.
Wesley was right about one thing. She didn't have where to go or know what to do.
Just as she was lamenting, the new phone began to ring and an unknown number flashed across the screen.
