I raised the glass of wine to my lips and sipped at it, not looking away from the TV screen, it was a wrestling match and I loved it.
"Audrey" Mom called, I heard her steps approaching afterwards. I crumpled my face.
"Don't tell me you're not in bed yet"
I turned to her and grinned widely.
"Come on, Mi Cha" She called me by my native name. She walked towards the TV and turned it off.
Yeah,
I was quiet expecting that.
"You just arrived from the States not quite long ago, so you ought to be resting" She coaxed, walking close to me. "And besides, remember you've a great day ahead of you" She smiled lovingly. I rolled my eyes.
I dropped Chelsea- my pet, on the floor and stood up.
"Don't remind me, mom" I said sternly.
She slowly held my hand and smiled ruefully. "Audrey, I'm very much aware you don't like to school here, and you also know how much I don't like being in the States" Her voice breaks as she talks. "It reminds me of memories..."
"It's okay, mom" I forced a little smile.
The last thing I wanted to see at that moment was her tears. "I will school here in Korea, I will fulfill your wish" I said to her and smiled covered up her face, instantly.
"That's my baby girl" She pecked my cheeks, joyously.
"I already got everything prepared"
"And I'm sure you would love their school uniform" I smiled perfunctorily to cover how displeased I was.
I hate Korea.
"Alright mom, I'll just go to bed then" I announced. "Sure, sweetheart" I pecked her both cheeks and walked away.
"Sweet dreams, mom" I said aloud as I ascended the stairs, along with Chelsea.
"You too, dear"
I plonked myself into the bed.
I just had a long bath, I felt really good.
A little introduction will do.
I'm Mi Cha Kim but I loved to be called Audrey, my foreign name. Some would even call me 'Beauty'
Yeah, I'm a young pretty lady and I normally boast for it, all thanks to my woman.
I will clock eighteen in few months time, so you could say I'm eighteen years old already.
Truly, I was born and brought up here in South Korea. But I still prefer being in the States and that's why I visit often, I despise Korea so much and which the reason is still unknown to me.
I just returned after a long vacation with my Aunt in the States. I had a great time, indeed.
Mom doesn't like the States because that was where she met my irresponsible father. I was barely five years old when he left us all alone. And that's the major reason I became fiery till today.
He made me detest guys so much and I don't interact with them. I'm strong heartened and I love it like that. I believe guys are all the same.
People even call me names but I do not give a damn.
The only person I care about in this world is my Mom. And yeah, my little darling- Chelsea.
My mom is my pillar.
The source of my happiness.
She never got tired of me even though I'm a pain in her ass. Well, I believe you'll get to know me more.
I yawned softly and turned off the lamp.
I should go to sleep.
***********
The door creaked open and I watched as Dad poke his head inside, with a grin on his face.
"What are you still doing up, boy?" He asked as he stepped in, shutting the door.
I took my eyes back to my drawing and kept mute.
"Min jun, you're going to school tomorrow. Your drawing can wait, you should be in bed by now, it's late" Dad said immediately he sat down on a stool beside my bed.
I sighed softly.
"I don't feel like going to school tomorrow" I told him flatly, arranging my drawing materials to where they belong.
"Uhmm"
"That school is so boring, Dad" I sounded peeved, not turning to look at him from what I was doing.
"It's not the school son, it's you" I raised my head to look at him, surprised.
"You're yet to revive from what your mom did to us, Min jun" Rage crept on my body and I shut my eyes.
"You engraved it on your mind like It's really important. Look at me, I'm over it and I'm doing quite alright without your mom"
"That's a lie, Dad" I grinded my teeth. "You and I
both know that you still love that woman, you stare at her pictures almost every nights" I stood on my feet, fuming.
"Well, I don't care about that, but all I know is that I can never love a girl. They are betrayals and doesn't worth to be seen around us" I grited my teeth in annoyance as memories flashed in my head.
How she left us when everything turned upside down for my Dad some years ago, when he was shattered beyond repair. How Dad had pleaded with her, how she yanked my hands when I was crying and begging her not to leave me. But still, she left, saying she couldn't cope.
"Aaron" Dad called my foreign name but I just wiped my tears and marched out, turning deaf ears to his calls.
I strongly dislike my own mother ever since. And not only that, she made me believe women are all the same.
Dad got on his feet few years after she left us, we relocated to USA but I didn't really like my stay there and that was why I persuaded Dad we should return to South Korea.
I sat on my favorite chair in the garden, with tears flowing freely from my eyes.
My name is Min jun, and I also have an English name- Aaron. I'm a quiet person, I barely interact and that's why my classmates doesn't like me, except from the girls though, but I usually shun them. I avoid them like my life depends on it. But you see, I become someone else when it comes to my Dad, he's the only person I act all free with.
Audrey
A shrilling sound jerked me awake from my beauty sleep and I almost scream. "Ugh!" I groaned, sitting up. I turned to my nightstand to saw an alarm clock on it.
I closed my eyes shortly and opened them.
I'm sure it was mom's doing.
"I want to believe you're awake, Audrey" I heard her cheerful voice outside and I couldn't resist the urge to roll my eyes.
She opened the door widely and walked in, giggling like a kid. "Good morning, sweetheart" She uncovered the duvet from my body and pecked my forehead.
She sat on the bed close to me.
"Do you really have to do that?" I asked her, grimly. "Yes baby" She replied, sweetly. "But mom.." "There's no but, Mi Cha" She cut in, standing on her feet. "Now get up and let's prepare you for school" I let out a rueful breath, pushing my hair backward.
She proceeded towards my closet and I watched as she brought out the school uniform; she turned to me with a wide smile.
"Isn't it pretty?" She raised the well ironed uniform. A navy blue blazer, a white school shirt with a school tie, together with a grey pleated skirt. I just shrugged and left the bed, I slide my feet into the flip flops and dallied towards the bathroom.
"Hurry up, Audrey" Mom said behind me and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.
I gulped down my coffee and then belched loudly, causing mom to squeezed her face in grimace. I laughed softly and stood up from the chair, adjusting my uniform.
"Are you sure you will be fine with cabs?"
"I can just hire a driver" She said, standing up too. I shot her a loving smile.
"I'm will clock Eighteen years old soon mom, so you should stop treating me like I'm ten" She chuckled softly, brushing my hair backward with her fingers. "Should I just give you a ride today?" She asked. I carried my backpack on the chair next to me and turned to her.
"I'll be fine, mom" I assured.
I pecked her forehead and rushed past her.
"Take care of yourself, darling" She shouts.
"You too, sweetheart" I also shouted as I got to the entrance.
"And make sure you don't skip lunch, okay?" I heard her say but I was out already.
I just smiled to myself and adjusted my backpack on my shoulder.
The cab screeched to an halt and I looked out from the window to see the school gigantic blue gate. Here we are.
I paid the cab driver and came down from the cab. I watched as cars drove into the school compound, students walking in two's and more, chattering happily. Uhmm..
I made to walk in like other students but the security guard or whatever stopped me, obstructing my way with his long arm.
"Where's your school ID?" He requested.
Oh..
"I'm a new student, sir" I replied with a little smile. He stared at me for a moment before nodding his head.
He paved way, I hissed softly as I walked into the school premises. "Whoa" It escaped my mouth immediately I stepped in.
I darted my eyes around the whole environment with amusement; Busan Foreign Language High School (BFS) was boldly written everywhere, it was carved with flowers too.
I folded my lips and nodded with satisfaction.
Not that bad.
I should head to the principal office.
I took a step forward and stopped again, letting my eyes search for the staircase by my right hand side.
I already asked mom to give me directions to the principal's office cause I couldn't possibly start asking people around for directions.
Yea,
You could say I'm proud.
I smiled to myself as soon as I saw the staircase; High five girl!
"You're welcome to BFS once again, Audrey" The quite looking old woman said for the fifth time.
I adjusted on my seat, getting impatient already.
She should just give me the goddamn materials already and show me to my class.
She pushed the swivel chair backward and stood up. "Come have your textbooks and writing materials, girl" She said as she proceeded to the bookshelves in the office.
I quickly got on my feet and trailed behind her.
"Ask any student around to show you grade eleven class" She said as she stretched out all the materials to me.
Jeez! "Can I just locate it myself?" I asked her after I'd put everything inside my backpack.
"Sure, but it might be stressful for you, you know, being your first time" She adjusted her glasses and I nodded with a smile.
"Thanks ma'am" I bowed again and walked out of the office.
"And where on earth is grade eleven?" I gritted my teeth as I climbed up the stairs for the third time, tiredly. I've been searching for it for some minutes now but couldn't find it. And there were no students around to even ask anymore.
I placed my both hands akimbo as I stood in the hallway.Damn it, Audrey!
I looked from my left to right and saw a guy approaching my direction.
Oh no,
Why not a girl at least?
What do I do now? I thought, as I watched him come nearer.
I gulped.
Should I just ask him?
Never!
You will never do that, Audrey. My fist tightened.
The guy finally got to where I was, and to my utmost surprise, he walked past me without sparing me a look. My eyes popped up.
Okay, for real?
Not even a glance, like I didn't exist.
Uhmm
'Perhaps he's blind' I thought as I watched his back walking away.
Don't you think he might be in grade eleven?
I heard a voice in my head.
Yeah,
"He might be in grade eleven" I muttered.
I released a rueful breathe and followed behind him. I pray he's in grade eleven.
I walked closely at his back but he was not even looking back.
Okay,
Is he deaf too?
I rolled my eyes as I brushed my hair backward with my palm.
He headed towards a classroom and I looked up to saw Grade 11 written above it. I sighed with relief, thank goodness.
He walked into the classroom and I followed.
Oh, A teacher was in already.
The teacher turned to our direction as soon as we entered. "And why are just coming to my class?" The teacher fumes, clearly directing the question to him.
He just kept mute with his head down.
Alright.
Is he dumb too?
"Just get out of my sight!" The man yelled and I watched as he walked up to an empty seat in the middle roll. "And who are you be the way?"
I blinked my eyes and turned to face the teacher.
"I'm new here" I replied simply. "Whoa, you're the new student?" He asked, shining his brown dentition. "The principal already informed all grade 11 teachers about you" He explained like I asked him a question. I only nodded.
He turned to the class and I did the same.
"Class! Meet Audrey, she's one of us from now on" The teacher introduced with all smiles.
And what on earth is he smiling about? I rolled my eyes, secretly. My eyes landed on three guys at the edge of the classroom , smiling sheepishly to themselves.
I scoffed inwardly and removed my gaze from their monkey faces. "Introduce yourself" I heard say. "You already done that" I looked at him and told him bluntly.
He squeezed his brows. "Huh?"
"There's one thing you must all know about me" I began, facing the whole class again.
And the girls were already giving me 'what does she want to say look' but I just let my eyes remained on the guys, since they were the ones I solemnly have a word it.
And I was glad they'll turned to me with all attention. Well, except from him though, he was already copying the short note on the chalkboard. Duffer.
"I don't interact with guys and I'll be very glad if you can all do the same, don't come close to me" I said dauntlessly and I watched as they all exchange glances, including the girls.
"Audrey" The teacher called, faintly "But why?" A guy from the front seat asked, confusingly.
"I detest guys" I gritted out immediately and the whole class gasped in surprise.
They all started to murmur among themselves, shooting me all sort of looks, but who cares?
I caught Duffer staring at me but he quickly removed his eyes. Good.
I heard the teacher cleared his throat.
Oh, he's still here?
"Uhmm,. I don't know why you're being like this on your first day of resumption, but you should take your seat now" The teacher said with a wry smile. I nodded shortly and proceeded towards the first roll.
"No empty seat here" The girls said, simultaneously. "There's an empty seat here" A guy announced from the back seat, pointing to a seat adjacent to Duffer's.
I secretly rolled my eyes and made to walk towards it. "That's Jin's seat" A girl stood up and said.
Okay,
What's going on?
"Will you keep quiet and sit down" The teacher gave a scold.
"Jin is not in school today, so take your seat Audrey" I hissed lowly and walked up to it.
I dropped my backpack on the desk and settled down. "Let's continue, class" The teacher continues. I brought out my writing materials and looked up at the chalk board.
It was English language, my favourite.
"A word that means the opposite of another word is called what?" The teacher threw the question to the class. I folded my arms on my chest with my legs crossed.
"Anyone?" The teacher asked, looking at everyone. "Let's hear you, Audrey"
"A word that means the opposite of another word is called Antonym" I answered confidently.
"Correct" The teacher smiles and the whole class began to murmur again.
Now I get it, the only thing they could do perfectly was to murmur Fools.
I caught some girls eyeing me; I bit my lower lip, preventing myself not to laugh it out.
They should stop it, they look like Barbie dolls.
I took my eyes back to the teacher, ignoring the looks I was receiving from the guys.
It was short break period.
We had two more subjects after English language class. Some students already left the class for lunch. I glanced at Duffer's seat and he was not on seat too.
So he also eat?
I chuckled inwardly at my own question, who doesn't eat? "Hey, you!" Two girls snapped their fingers as they walked up to me- a red headed and a blondie.
I see, they were actually the ones that eyed me earlier. "If you think you're crazy, then our Jin is crazier" The red headed smirked.
I bitted my lips as I lowered my head.
I seriously didn't want to laugh but these people.. I mean, what's up with her red hair?
"Watch as she will deal with you so bad tomorrow" The red headed snorted. I raised my head and bursted in laughter, as I couldn't control it any longer.
They both exchanged a glance.
"You think this is just an empty threat?" Blondie spoke this time. I stopped laughing and opened my backpack to bring out my headphone and cellphone.
"You shall see!" Red headed yelled and I watched as they both marched out of the classroom. I smiled at their back and shook my head. Silly kids.
"Hi, Audrey" I looked my right side to see a skinny guy standing close to me and my smile was replaced with a frown immediately.
"I'm Seo yun. You look so cute when you smile" He said but I just scrolled down my playlist.
I finally settled with a foreign song, I fixed my headphone to my ears.
I closed my eyes, enjoying every bit of the song.
Suddenly, my headphone was removed from my ears.
What?
I opened my eyes to see the same guy holding it in his hand. "How dare you?" I roared, standing up slowly.
"I was talking to you but.." I cut him short with a hard slap across his cheek.
I heard gasps from the few people that were in class.
"Are you crazy?!"
"Are you insane?"I yelled to his face.
"Who the f**k do you think you are to come close?" I rasped. He just stared at me with his hand on his reddened cheek.
"The next time you try this with me, I'll make sure you landed your silly ass in the hospital" I threatened through gritted teeth, staring directly into his frog eyes. I snatched my headphone from him, picked my phone which was lying on my backpack and marched off.
Such a dunderhead!
I got to the entrance of the classroom, I lifted my head to see Duffer staring at me with a hint of surprise look on his face.
Yeah,
I guess he saw that too.
I walked past him and left the classroom.
