In the hospital of JZ City.
Shirley Xia slowly opened her eyes. Her head pounded as pain raked all over her body. Grey walls loomed over her as the scent of formalin entered her nostrils. Ignoring her splitting headache, she tried her best to recall what had happened.
She was reading a novel before dozing off. It was the one that had attracted her attention because of all the cliche and overused plot lines.
After finishing the book, she had fallen asleep.
She had no idea why she was in a hospital.
The door opened.
Shirley Xia immediately tilted her head up as the next few words shot out of her mouth. "What's wrong with me?" she asked hurriedly. "Am I dying or something?"
Suddenly, a chuckle echoed across the ward. It seemed that the temperature had just dropped by a few degrees.
She shivered at the sound. Without another word, she glanced at the people who had just walked it. She wasn't expecting to see a handsome man in a business suit. With such a strong jawline, he could've been a popular star. In fact, he exuded the same arrogance of one.
But why would such a man come to her room? Puzzled, Shirley Xia glanced at the woman standing beside him. Her eyes were bright and shiny, and there was just something about her that emitted child-like innocence. In fact, she looked exactly like...
Wait!
Shirley Xia froze.
It felt as if her whole world stopped before her. How could they look like the main characters in the novel that she had just read?
"Who are you?" she demanded. Damon Ji and Karla Lin? Were they really standing in front of her?
"Your leg was hit, not your brain," the man sneered. "Don't act stupid. I didn't expect that you'd actually hit my car on purpose."
Although the first half of his words weren't in the book, the latter part was. It was exactly what the hero had said to the supporting character.
When he said it, Karla Lin pulled his sleeves. "Don't say that. No one would do such a thing," she stated. "Even if she risks her life, it means that she's willing to pay for everything..."
The words in the book played over in her mind as Shirley Xia could feel goose bumps all over her body. At this point in time, she couldn't tell whether this was real or a dream. She pinched her arms, trying to get a hold of herself. "Look, I'm fine," she cut in. "You can go now." From what she had remembered, her character would later come to a miserable end. She would be banished to Africa to act as a prostitute. By then, she would have slept with plenty of men. In the end, she would be met with death.
Even if this was just a dream, she didn't want it to morph into a nightmare.
While Shirley Xia was thinking, a mechanical voice sounded at the back of her mind. "Welcome to Light of Mary Su. I'm Sam, and I'll be your personal consultant. Now, you've become the supporting role in the story The Star Girlfriend of the Master Devil. If you'll be able to humiliate the hero and the heroine, you'll accumulate experience points and upgrade. Once you reached level twenty-three, then you will be able to leave. If you failed your mission, then you'll stay in the book forever. You will also meet your miserable end."
What the hell? What the hell did he just say? "Are you crazy? I want to go home!" she exclaimed.
"Every time you've succeeded in upgrading one level, there will be a reward waiting for you that could help you in advancing the plot line. Good luck."
The monotonous voice disappeared in an instant.
"What did you say?" When Shirley Xia came to her senses, she saw Damon Ji stalking towards her.
It was then when she realized that she had just yelled out of surprise. It seemed that both of them had heard it.
According to the plot, Karla Lin wanted to give up on Damon Ji because of her, which only made the man despise her more. Thinking of the task, Shirley Xia decided to bite the bullet. She sneered, "Didn't you hear what I just said? I won't be repeating myself. Get the hell out of my room!"
"Don't be angry, Shirley. I-I just heard that you couldn't forget him and how you married his brother just to piss him off. If you...if you really feel that way, I'll leave him," Karla Lin stated softly.
At her words, Damon Ji's face darkened.
Shirley Xia had half of her mind not to punch the woman. It was as if Karla Lin wanted her to disappear in the face of the earth! If she couldn't complete her mission, then she would not only be banished to Africa, but she would also die from malaria! There was no way in hell that she was going to let that woman win.
"Really?" Shirley Xia forced a smile into her lips. "It's not the first day that you know I like him. Why didn't you leave then?" At this point, Shirley was already getting into her role as a vicious character.
"I didn't expect that you'll love him that much." Karla Lin cowered under her gaze. Even if she didn't scream at the woman's face, the heroine looked as if she was about to cry.
"You didn't expect what? You know for a fact that I was engaged to him, and you're still with him. Do you think you can take him away just because I wasn't that interested in him anymore? Don't be so ridiculous," Shirley continued.
Fortunately, since she had just read the book, she knew what had happened all throughout the story.
Being the heroine of the story, Karla Lin had eighty percent of the men in the book after her. In fact, they would do everything to help her as if they were some dogs waiting to be praised. Other women who were introduced in the book were either her friends or antagonists ready to rip her life apart. Shirley hated how spineless Karla was portrayed. That was why she had hoped that the supporting actress would give her a hard time.
Now, she was handed that task. She wanted to claw her way out of this book.
What if her mission failed? What would happen to her then? She was now at level zero, and at this point...she knew she had to think for herself. Shirley clenched her fists and glared at the woman in front of her.
Before she was able to take her yapping, Damon slapped her across the face.
"How dare you talk to her like that?" he bellowed.
Shirley felt blood rushing up to her face as she directed her glare at him.
"What the hell? How dare you hit me?" she snarled. Although Damon's domineering aura crushed her confidence, she needed to hold on and restrain herself. There was no way she was going to be defeated like this.
"I'm the heir of the Xia Film Company. Who are you? Without your brother, who even knows you? Have you even earned a single penny? And you think you're deserving of you parent's money?" Shirley continued.
Although he was handsome, he didn't suit her taste. While she was reading, Shirley always hated reading about Damon. She had tons of complaints regarding the rich CEO standing before her. He didn't earn a single cent for the company his parents had built. Instead, he lounged around and fell in love with a nobody.
His face flushed red. "Are you asking for death?"
"It's none of your business, is it? Now get out of here!" Shirley rang the bell beside her bed to call the doctors in. "If you're not afraid of losing face, then fine. Stay here all you want."
If this was any other day, Shirley would've shrunk back at the glare he was giving her, but she forced herself to stand her ground.
"So you've finally learned to play hard to get?" Damon sneered.
While they were talking, the nurses and doctors finally came in at the sound of the bell. When they saw Damon standing in front of Shirley, they couldn't hide the fear that crept up their faces.
He turned towards them.
"Miss Shirley is fine now. Get her discharged." "How dare you?" she yelled.
She had just been in a car accident, and her body still hadn't recovered. Half of her legs were still numb, and bandages covered her limbs. How was she going to walk? How could he do such a thing?
"Do you even know who I am? I'm the successor of the Xia Film Company!"
"The Xia Film Company?" Damon snorted. "It will be gone soon enough."
In the plot of the original book, what Damon had said touched the readers. He might be strong and handsome, but he was also willing to risk everything for his lover. However, what he had just said simply disgusted the hell out of Shirley.
Damon didn't even have the ability to throw her out. He only relied on his brother to run the family business, and then he used that money to help Karla rise to fame. At this point, they were nothing but leeches.
Before Shirley could add anything, a nurse forcefully helped her up. The other nurses packed up her clothes. In just a few minutes, she was already thrown out of the hospital
Damon drove Karla away from her.
When the car passed by Shirley, she could see the melancholy and self-pity all over Karla's face. The sight sickened her.
"You've upgraded to the first level and got your reward. When will you use it? Now or later?" Sam's mechanical voice sounded.
"Later," Shirley said after a pause.
"Okay. As your level increases, you will need more and more experience points. Good luck!"
She didn't even know how to reply.
Seeing as she had nowhere else to go, she decided to take a taxi home.
The supporting actress in the text married his brother, Samuel Ji, in order to take revenge on Damon.
Once she had arrived, Shirley made sure to be quiet. While Damon was only pretending to be a dangerous tiger, Samuel Ji was the real beast of the household.
In fact, the Ji Group wouldn't be where it was if it wasn't for him.
However, it suddenly occurred to Shirley that Samuel Ji was just the adopted son of the Ji Family. All he had done was to pave the way for Damon's success. Later in the novel, he finally knew the truth about his identity. After a long time wallowing in pain, he transformed into an evil man. He killed his parents out of cold blood.
He only chose to turn himself in after Karla had convinced him to.
"What did you do?" A calm voice sounded behind her.
Shirley froze.
The chandelier in the hall suddenly lit up, and the bright line reflected in Shirley's eyes. She raised her hand to shadow herself, feeling like a criminal in an interrogation room.
There was a huge French window located at the other side of the hall with a leather chair right beside it. A man in a black shirt sat there. One of his hand was holding a newspaper while the other was holding the light switch.
Although he appeared casual, there was something about his voice that sent chills down her spine.
Shirley couldn't help but pity the supporting lead. Seeing this, she decided to tell him the truth. "I went to find Damon, but then I was misunderstood by Karla. Damon hurried to explain to her, and then he hit me! When I woke up in the hospital, he told me that I hit the car on purpose, when I didn't! You know what? I don't even want to talk about it anymore," she stated. The more she talked, the more upset she felt.
Now that she was in Level 1, it would be harder for her to upgrade in the future.
When would she be able to go home? Would she even go home?
"Are you sure it's a misunderstanding?" Samuel finally put down the newspaper he was holding and stood up. He walked over to Shirley, cornering her. His dark eyes were as cold as night.
"You don't love me, and I don't love you. Why are you asking so many questions?" As soon as she finished, Shirley could feel her heart tightening at the sight of his narrowed eyes. Suddenly, she wanted to take back everything she had said.
"You're my wife. Shouldn't I be asking why you're seducing my brother?" Samuel seized her by the neck. "In fact, you have the audacity to cheat on me so openly. How dare you?"
"I..."
"Don't forget why you're here. Damon loves Karla, not you. If you were half as kind-hearted as that woman, you wouldn't even be in this situation," Samuel sneered.
Upon hearing his words, Shirley clenched her fists.
Kind-hearted? That woman was kind-hearted? Karla was a bitch who wanted to bring her to her deathbed! In fact, that self-piteous woman was going to be the death of her. Shirley felt blood surging through her veins, as she had the urge to laugh at everything he had said. In the novel, everyone thought that Karla was the kindest human being in the universe. Not only was she innocent and lovely, but she was also incredibly beautiful.
A sense of powerlessness made Shirley even angrier.
If such a woman would've been born into the real world, she would've already been trampled on the amount of people she had pissed off! She wouldn't go anywhere in life.
"I'll keep that in mind." Shirley raised the corners of her lips and bravely brought herself to look into the man's eyes. "If that's the case, then I hope you don't forget who you are as well. You're just an adopted son of the Ji Family. No matter what you do, no one would even remember you. You think you're trying to help them, but you're simply helping the enemy. You're nothing but a self-righteous idiot!"
Samuel was immediately irritated by her words.
He threw her onto the wide sofa and towered over her. "What the hell did you say?"
"Oh, what a pity. You'll know it one day." Staring into his angry eyes, Shirley grew even braver. Her only task was to reach the full level. She couldn't care less if this man was alive or dead by the end of it.
Samuel grabbed her neck and forced her closer. His voice was cold enough to freeze her over. "Are you asking for death?"
"I just–"
Before Shirley could finish, he bit hard on her thin lips. Her skin broke from the pressure as the smell of blood wafted around her. She tried to push him away as tears ran down her cheeks, but Samuel forced himself against her.
His lips against hers was enough to make her suffocate. In all her life, she had never met such a domineering man like Samuel. When he threw her onto the bed, panic and fear rushed through her system.
Shirley whimpered under his grip. "Samuel!" She hit him against the chest. "I love Damon! You're nothing but a dog for the Ji Family, right? And you think you can fuck his ex-fiance? Get a grip!"
She could see the anger and pain hidden inside the depths of his gaze, but in a second, they were gone.
"Fuck off!"
Regardless of her injury, the man threw her out of the bedroom.
In the next few days, Shirley would stay at home to recover from her injuries.
She had just married Samuel, and the two of them felt nothing for each other. The only reason they got married was because he needed a wife. She only married him because she wanted to take avenge herself.
In short, they were simply using one another. There weren't any strings attached.
As she gradually recovered, Shirley was trying to find another opportunity to upgrade, only to be hit by another crisis that the Xia Film Company was going through.
The scandal was all over the internet. It was said that the CEO of the Xia Group was having an affair with a female star. Not only that, but he was also laundering the company's money so that it could evade its taxes. Shirley's father was the current president of the Xia Film Company. Upon hearing the news, he promptly blacked out in anger. He had a heart attack and was sent to the hospital to recover.
Soon enough, the news became more and more rampant. Their stock price began to plummet, and all their partnerships began to cancel. The projects they were about to start were on a standstill. Even Karla, the famous movie star, terminated her contract with the Xia Film Company. Although she had to pay for damages, it was a drop in the bucket compared to the collapse that her company was about to have. Shirley gritted her teeth, feeling agitated.
She could remember this happening in the book, but she had skipped over that part. She had never been interested in business anyway.
'What the hell am I going to do?' If her company would fall, then she was done for.
Flustered, Shirley thought of the mechanical voice. "I want to use the reward opportunity now," she demanded.
"The first option is to increase your skills. Your clairvoyance, strength, medical skills would all be increased. However, the skill level would not be able to exceed the host's. The second option is to open a box to solve the current predicament."
"The second option," Shirley said hurriedly.
Originally, she thought that having clairvoyance was useful. However, she was still in Level 1. It wasn't as if her clairvoyance could solve anything at such a low level. In fact, it might not even recover her company.
The sky rumbled as lightning flashed.
It seemed that it was about to rain.
Shirley quickly changed into a business suit. She wore a high-quality chiffon shirt with a V collar, revealing her creamy skin and defined collarbone. She wore a tight skirt to match the whole outfit. Although the style was simple, it enveloped her curvy figure well. Since it was cold, she decided to put on a sweater.
Her clothes might look simple, but they were created by famous brands and exclusive designers. It made her look sophisticated and elegant.
Without missing a beat, she walked into the Xia Film Company's wide doors and took the elevator to the meeting room located on the thirteenth floor.
Because of the rumors circulating around the internet, half of the employees in the company had left. The once bustling office looked a little bleak.
She entered the meeting room to see all of the shareholders sitting on their respective seats. Shirley took the seat at the other end of the table that overlooked the twenty shareholders. Her face was calm and passive.
However, something in her froze when she realized the person sitting at one of the seats. Samuel!
Her lips twitched. Thinking of Sam's words, she restrained herself.
"My father had a heart attack, so he would be sent abroad for a coronary bypass operation. He's too old to bear the malice on the internet, but of course, our company can't live without a leader. Since we don't have a chairman, we must vote one. If anyone can think of a good candidate, then suggest them to me so we can have a vote. But today, I'll be taking over. That is, if you'll allow me," Shirley said calmly.
Originally, this was going to be a difficult thing. In fact, if she had walked in here without that reward, she would've been mocked and kicked unceremoniously out of the meeting room.
However, in order to resolve this crisis, she needed to be the chairman. Sam's reward was for her to pass through the voting.
The meeting room erupted into a series of discussion.
Shirley merely sat still and crossed her arms. She couldn't help but glance at Samuel. One of the reasons why he was here was because he had bought the shares when the Xia Film Company was just newly listed. He became one of the largest shareholders.
Her heart pounded nervously.
Although Sam already told her that the shareholders would agree to her decision, she was afraid that Samuel might be the unexpected element thrown into the mix.
"No problem."
"I agree with you Shirley is his daughter after all. It's not like she'd do anything to harm the company."
"She graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance and management abroad. In fact, she even interned in one of the top companies. We all know she's capable."
Upon hearing their discussions, her burden slowly lifted off her chest.
However, throughout the discussion, Samuel didn't say a word. It was hard to tell as to whether he agreed with their words or not.
Soon, more and more people agreed to her decision.
Even Samuel, who had been filled with doubts, agreed that Shirley should take over the Xia Film Company.
After the meeting, it was as if Samuel had come to his senses. While Shirley was sorting out the documents on her desk, he placed a hand on her shoulder, holding her down. "What tricks are you playing?"
"I'm not playing anything," she snapped. There was no point in feeling guilty of manipulating them. It wasn't as if they knew what she had done. Besides, Samuel wouldn't even believe it even if she admitted to it.
She straightened her back and looked straight into his eyes.
"If you don't have the experience to handle such a crisis, you'll be the end of the Xia Film Company."
As soon as he finished his words, Shirley finally remembered what had happened. The crisis that they were facing right now was caused by none other than Damon. He was the one who deliberately paid some trolls to slander their company. He falsified evidences and used the other film companies to steal the resources from the Xia Group.
If the company closed down, then Shirley would have no choice but to sell herself to other men in order to get power. Once all hope was lost, she would kidnap and retaliate against Karla. Once Samuel knew of these things, he would directly throw her into Africa to be someone's prostitute.
She and Samuel had suffered because of it.
Thinking of this, Shirley felt a twinge of sympathy for the man in front of her.
"Since I've taken over the Xia Film Company, I'll be responsible for it. I'll do my best. Now, if you have the time, do you mind investigating on the Qin Family?" she asked casually.
Samuel's gaze darkened. "You–"
"I didn't mean anything. With your ability, you'd be able to find out more about the Qin Family without the Ji Family's knowledge. More specifically, you'll be able to know more about Jay Qin." She patted him on the shoulder without saying anything more.
Although Samuel didn't know the truth, in Shirley's eyes, they were both one and the same now.
