Chapter 1

The yellow cab splashed through the flooded streets of Manhattan, the torrential downpour hammering against the roof like a barrage of bullets. Brandy Clarke sat in the backseat, her eyes fixed on the blurred neon lights bleeding across the wet glass. She hadn't bothered to wait for an umbrella after her evening lecture at the medical seminar, and her trench coat was damp, clinging uncomfortably to her shoulders.

When the cab finally pulled up to the grand entrance of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, she paid the fare and dashed through the sliding glass doors, shivering slightly as the hyper-conditioned air of the lobby hit her wet clothes. She made her way to the VIP wing, the pristine, quiet corridors a stark contrast to the storm raging outside.

As she walked toward the expansive suite where her father was staying, she passed the staff break room. The door was propped open, and she paused instinctively. Inside, a colleague was heating up some late-night takeout, the smell of microwaved pasta wafting into the hall.

"Done with your lecture already, Brandy?" the colleague asked, turning around with a tired smile.

"Yeah," Brandy replied, stepping into the doorway and scanning the room. "Just got back."

"Looking for someone?"

"Is... Chloe not around?" Brandy asked, trying to sound casual.

"Chloe? No, she went home hours ago. She's not on the night rotation this week."

"Oh," Brandy murmured, her fingers tracing the edge of her damp sleeve. She hesitated, biting her lower lip-a nervous habit she couldn't quite shake. Finally, she couldn't stop the question from slipping out. "Does she not need to be here to monitor Mr. Payne? I heard his injuries were... pretty severe."

The colleague let out a soft laugh, stirring her pasta. "Barron Payne? He was discharged this afternoon. Honestly, with his kind of money, he has a whole team of private concierge doctors at his disposal. Why would a billionaire stay in a stuffy hospital room when he can recover in a multi-million-dollar penthouse? We're good, but we can't compete with that level of luxury."

Brandy stood frozen for a second. He was already gone.

A hollow feeling echoed in her chest. Of course he was. With friends like Adrien Pratt and Dr. Evan Hayes-men who represented the absolute elite of their respective fields-Barron lacked nothing. Why had she even worried? A minor complication like this was nothing they couldn't handle. Her concern was entirely redundant.

She forced a polite smile, suppressing the sharp sting of disappointment, and excused herself.

Pushing open the heavy oak door to her father's VIP suite, she was met with the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor. Her father was resting, his breathing shallow but even. Martha, the dedicated private caregiver who had been with their family for years, looked up from her knitting.

"Good heavens, Brandy, you didn't even take an umbrella?" Martha scolded gently, setting her needles down. She immediately grabbed a thick, dry towel from the linen closet and draped it over Brandy's head, vigorously rubbing her damp hair. "Go to the bathroom and change out of those wet clothes. I'll put them in the dryer. It's almost autumn, you can't be catching a chill now."

"I know, Martha, thank you," Brandy sighed, letting the older woman fuss over her. She pulled a clean white button-down shirt from the small wardrobe they kept in the suite and retreated to the bathroom to change.

When she emerged, feeling warmer but no less exhausted, Martha was already hanging her damp coat on the drying rack.

"Where is Blake?" Martha asked, her brow furrowing in disapproval. "He's usually made an appearance by now. Why is he nowhere to be seen tonight?"

"He's probably just busy," Brandy said flatly, picking up a medical journal from the coffee table.

"And you haven't even called to check on him?"

"If he's busy, I shouldn't interrupt."

Martha sighed, walking over and placing a warm hand on Brandy's shoulder. "Brandy, sweetheart, I know things are tense. But in a marriage, you can't always be so stubborn. Sometimes, you just need to show a little care. It goes a long way."

Brandy offered a tight, humorless smile. "I hear you, Martha. Please, don't worry about my marriage."

"How can I not worry? I look at you like you're my own daughter," Martha lamented, shaking her head. "You and your father... neither of you makes it easy for me to relax."

Brandy's eyes softened. "I wish you were my mother, Martha. But I guess my dad and I just aren't that lucky." The mention of her late mother brought a familiar, dull ache to her chest, dimming the light in her eyes.

Martha looked slightly flustered, waving her hand dismissively. "Oh, hush now, don't talk nonsense."

Brandy smiled softly and lowered her head, opening her journal.

Just then, her phone buzzed sharply against the glass table. A text message from an unknown number lit up the screen.

Brandy picked it up. She tapped the notification, and a high-resolution photo filled her screen.

She froze.

The image was chaotic and deliberate. It showed a tangled mess of bedsheets. A man's expensive dress shirt was discarded carelessly next to a sheer, black lace slip. Beneath them lay a pair of women's lacy underwear tangled with men's briefs. Brandy recognized the dress shirt instantly. It was the exact custom-tailored Tom Ford shirt Blake had put on this morning. The cuffs bore his signature monogram: B.S.

Below the photo was a taunting line of text.

Brandy, I bet you haven't even seen your husband's underwear, have you? Is a sham of a marriage like this really worth holding onto?

Brandy stared at the screen, and then, slowly, she smiled.

It was a cold, utterly detached smile. The sheer audacity of the mistress's petty games was almost comical. She could have easily fired back a scathing reply, putting the woman in her place. But the truth was, she didn't care enough to type the words. Fighting over a man like Blake Schwartz with some desperate blonde was beneath her.

"What is it?" Martha asked, noticing the long silence. "Bad news?"

Brandy didn't want the older woman to worry. With a flick of her thumb, she deleted the message and locked her phone.

"It was just Blake," Brandy lied smoothly. "He said he's tied up at a networking event and won't be able to make it tonight."

"See? He works so hard, entertaining clients at all hours," Martha chided gently. "You need to be more supportive, Brandy. Understand?"

Chapter 2

"Yes, of course I will," Brandy replied, her voice smooth and practiced. *He's busy, alright,* she thought with a cynical edge. *Busy entertaining his mistresses.*

She redirected her gaze back to the dense text of her medical journal. A strange sense of peace washed over her. She was profoundly grateful that she had never truly placed any hope in Blake Schwartz. Because she expected nothing, she felt no disappointment. Her heart remained an untouchable fortress.

The night deepened, wrapping the city in a suffocating darkness. Outside the reinforced windows of the VIP suite, the storm raged on, the rain lashing against the glass without a moment's pause.

Her father and Martha had long since fallen asleep, their breathing providing a quiet, rhythmic background noise. Brandy sat alone in the dim glow of a reading lamp, turning the pages of her book. The hospital was eerily silent, save for the relentless drumming of the rain. It was well past midnight, yet sleep completely eluded her. Her mind was a chaotic swirl of medical terms, her father's declining health, and the lingering, unspoken worry about Barron Payne.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated violently against the wooden nightstand, the screen flashing brightly in the dark room.

In the absolute quiet, the sudden light and vibration felt jarring. Brandy jumped, her heart skipping a beat. Terrified that the noise would wake her father, she snatched the phone and immediately muted it. She glanced at the screen. It was a string of unknown digits.

She frowned, a crease forming between her brows. Was it Blake's mistress calling to escalate her petty provocations? But the area code didn't match the number from earlier.

Curiosity and a nagging sense of unease won out. She stood up, quietly slipped out of the suite, and pulled the heavy door shut behind her before answering.

"Brandy?" a male voice asked.

"This is she. Who is this?" Brandy replied, keeping her voice low in the empty corridor. She didn't recognize the tone.

"It's Adrien Pratt. We've met briefly before."

"Oh." Brandy blinked in surprise, recalling the devastatingly handsome, rogue-like man she had seen around Barron during her internship. "Mr. Pratt. It's late. Is there something you need?"

"Where are you? I'm coming to get you."

The abrupt, commanding statement left Brandy entirely bewildered. "Excuse me? You're coming to get me for what?"

Adrien's voice was tight with an uncharacteristic anxiety. "You still have that emergency access keycard to Barron's Tribeca penthouse, right? The one he gave you when you were dropping off those files? He's locked himself inside. I've been banging on the door for twenty minutes, and he's not answering."

Brandy's breath hitched, her pulse suddenly accelerating. "He's not answering?"

"I had a crucial video conference scheduled with him and some overseas clients at nine. He told me he was going to crash at the penthouse for a bit beforehand. And now... nothing. The guy sleeps like the dead sometimes, but he's never missed a meeting like this. Never."

The anxiety in Adrien's voice was contagious. The knot of worry Brandy had tried to bury all evening suddenly sprang up, tightening around her throat.

"I'm at New York-Presbyterian right now," Brandy said, her professional calm fracturing. "I can bring the keycard to you."

"No, don't walk out in this storm. It's not safe for a woman alone at this hour anyway," Adrien said quickly. "I'm already in my car. I'll be faster. Just wait for me at the main hospital entrance."

Adrien Pratt, despite his playboy reputation, possessed an ingrained, old-money chivalry. There was no way he was letting her navigate the torrential rain alone. Before Brandy could argue, he hung up.

Brandy stood in the sterile, brightly lit hallway for a long moment, staring at the darkened screen of her phone. The anxiety that had been simmering beneath the surface all night finally boiled over. She spun around, rushed back into the suite, and quietly rummaged through her leather tote bag until her fingers brushed against the cold, hard plastic of the black keycard.

She grabbed her trench coat and hurried out.

Brandy stood under the massive concrete awning of the hospital's main entrance, peering into the curtain of rain. Though she only waited a few minutes, every second stretched into an eternity.

Finally, the sleek, aggressive silhouette of a black Aston Martin cut through the downpour, pulling up to the curb with a low roar. Adrien pushed his door open, preparing to step out into the rain to escort her, but Brandy was already moving.

She sprinted through the deluge, ignoring the water soaking her shoes, and yanked the passenger door open.

"Why did you run out? I was coming to get you," Adrien said, looking at her wet hair.

"Let's just go," Brandy said, tossing the keycard onto the center console and immediately pulling the seatbelt across her chest.

Adrien paused for a fraction of a second, registering the sheer panic in her eyes, before shifting the car into gear and slamming his foot on the gas.

Chapter 3

The engine of the Aston Martin roared to life, a low, guttural growl that vibrated through the floorboards as the car surged forward into the relentless Manhattan storm. Adrien drove with an aggressive precision, the wipers fighting a losing battle against the sheets of rain.

He cast a quick, sideways glance at Brandy. "You look tense."

"How long has he been unresponsive?" Brandy asked, ignoring his observation, her eyes fixed on the red taillights blurring in the distance.

"A while. An hour, maybe more."

"Are you absolutely certain he's inside?"

"I could hear his phone ringing through the door. It just kept ringing until it went to voicemail. Over and over."

Brandy's jaw tightened, the muscles ticking in her cheek. She gripped the edge of her seatbelt. "Can you go faster, please?"

"What's going on?" Adrien asked, his own anxiety spiking in response to her visible dread. He pressed harder on the accelerator, the sports car weaving dangerously through the slick, rain-swept traffic.

Brandy swallowed hard. "He has severe lacerations. Open wounds. And he was out in this rain earlier today. If he's unresponsive, I'm terrified the wounds have become infected. He could be going into septic shock."

"Shit!" Adrien slammed his hand against the steering wheel. "I didn't even know he was injured! What the hell happened to him?"

Brandy shook her head, her voice trembling slightly. "I don't know."

"You don't know?" Adrien shot her a look of pure disbelief. His expression clearly said: *You two are involved, and you don't even know how he got hurt?*

Brandy bit her lip, unable to meet his accusing stare, and turned her face toward the rain-streaked window.

Before Adrien could press further, the car's Bluetooth system chimed loudly. The dashboard display flashed the name *Harper*.

Adrien tapped the screen. "Harper, what's up?"

"Adrien... is Barron with you?"

The voice that filled the cabin was thick with tears and panic. It was Harper Payne, Barron's younger sister.

"Hey, hey, calm down," Adrien said, his tone softening instantly. "Why are you crying? What did Barron do now?"

"It's not what he did to me, it's that I can't find him anywhere!" Harper sobbed, her voice echoing in the confined space of the car. "The whole house is a war zone. Grandfather and Dad are so furious they're practically shaking. Mom won't even leave her room to look for him. I had to sneak out to the garage just to call you. None of his security guys know where he is. If you haven't seen him, I'm going to have to call Brandy."

"Don't bother," Adrien said, shooting a heavy look at the passenger seat. "Brandy is sitting right next to me."

Brandy turned her head, her eyes wide with apprehension as she met Adrien's gaze.

"Harper," Adrien continued, his voice turning deadly serious. "You said your family is furious. And Barron's injuries... don't tell me your family did this to him."

Brandy's entire body went rigid. The air in the car suddenly felt too thin to breathe.

Harper's crying hitched. "Of course they did. Grandfather Charles and Dad lost their minds. They didn't hold back, Adrien. They used the family law. It was brutal. Grandfather was so enraged he had to take his heart medication right after. Even Mom wouldn't step in to stop it this time."

"What the hell did he do to bring that down on himself?" Adrien demanded, his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel.

"It's..." Harper hesitated, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "I can't say it out loud. If you want to know, ask Barron. But... it's all because of Brandy."

The words struck Brandy like a physical blow. Her hand, still gripping the seatbelt, began to shake uncontrollably.

Because of her.

The legendary, ruthless Payne family had unleashed their brutal, archaic discipline on their own heir, and she was the cause. The realization was a crushing weight on her chest. She knew the kind of absolute obedience families like the Paynes demanded. To cross them, to bring shame or complication to their empire, was an unforgivable sin. And Barron had taken the punishment for it.

She could feel Adrien's eyes on her again, heavy with a new understanding. She forced herself to sit up straighter, locking her trembling hands together in her lap.

"I got it, Harper," Adrien said quietly, reading the devastating impact of the words on Brandy's face. "I'll talk to him. Stop crying and go to bed. He's with us. We're heading to his place now. He'll be fine."

"You promise? You'll take care of him?"

"I promise. Go to sleep."

Adrien ended the call. The silence that followed was deafening, save for the rhythmic thumping of the wipers. Adrien glanced at Brandy several times, but she remained perfectly still, her face a pale, unreadable mask. Only the profound sorrow darkening her eyes betrayed the storm raging inside her.
